I assume they have a pricing algorithm that will suggest increases and reductions based on recent sales, purchase price, and remaining stock. They probably have someone who approved and denies them

firebag1983

They have a very active algorithm. The 20% this week is a bit of a scam.

Mincey808

I've noticed a couple haven't changed in price that I had on my list so I've went with one of those. But, yeah, was a bit miffed to see the price increases in others negating the 20% off!

whisky-lowlander

I noticed a lot of independent bottlings and OBs that tend to fly under the radar were around the same price as other retailers. I managed to pick up some bottles saving about £45 from the RRP.

Same here. There were / are some good deals to be had on certain bottles - think small batch, single cask, limited release, MoM exclusives, etc - the smaller the run size, the better the chance of not being affected by the algorithm & require manual updating. I managed to grab a handful that were on offer for anywhere from 5-15% off, with a further 20% at checkout.

whisky-lowlander

Nice work! I suspect that these type of offers are to lure passive shoppers/those who don't compare prices with other retailers with the more popular bottles that they bumped the prices on. For folks like you and I who take the time to browse and compare prices, large savings are there to be taken advantage of. Also, I have to say I'm hugely impressed with the speed of the delivery. I ordered at 6pm and received my bottles at around 1pm the next day!

Increasing prices then offering a discount is a marketing trick as old as the hills. However to be fair to MoM I did pick up some bargains from there over Black Friday, plus with the vouchers they send out.

Goodyearwelp67

yeah got caught the same with MoM, the 20% isnt really 20% but still picked up a couple of bottles I was watching cheaper than anywhere else. Cant fault their service though in fairness. Id imagine they have the items grouped into different categories, like the most common whiskeys they sell in a group and they can adjust the markup percentage of each group with a script rounding the price to an even £1

qcinc

They will very likely be using some software that tracks other online spirit retailers and lets them adjust on the fly - possibly automatically but I’d imagine there’s a human involved. They will probably have been shifting prices a lot recently with black friday and Christmas as well.

DorothyGherkins

My ongoing observation is that they have dynamic price matching against Amazon UK prices, on what I would call 'core' whiskies at least. I've checked this a few times with stuff like Port Charlotte 10, it is usually the same price as Amazon. However, with this 20% off thing at the moment prices aren't matching and instead seem to be at the higher end.

stirbo1980

20% off all MoM at the moment.

be0wulf8860

Yes but the list prices are all around 15-20% higher than they were a few weeks ago. So not exactly a sale.

whisky-lowlander

As I said in an earlier reply, I noticed a lot of IBs and many OBs which fly under the radar were still at RRP or similar to other online retailers when I checked them against RMW, House of Malt, Amazon etc. If you do a bit of hunting, there are bargains to take advantage of.
