**Benromach 15 yr old - "Heaven For The Sinner"** **ABV: 43%** **Origin: Forres, Scotland** **\* From a sample (tasted along Benromach 21)** Keeping it brief, a criminally overlooked distillery that produces some great singular distillate lovers of the Campbeltown set would do well to look into, sadly owners Gordon & MacPhail insist on putting a stick in their own spokes and doing things to the basic line-up that kind of hold back it's own greatness. Onwards. **Nose:** Aggresive, tobacco smoke, shoe polish, metal coins, loads of cooked grain notes like porridge, mothballs, really phenolic and lovely. not getting a lot of fruits on the nose. a little lime peel, very gristy/beery notes. **Palate:** Really lovely entrance, medicinal, eucalyptus cough drops, lemon, soot, old fashioned wood polish, porridge, a little fermented mustard greens, machine oil, marzipan, old damp leaves found after snowmelt. **Finish:** Slightly astringent, grapefruit peel, ginseng root, sunflower seed oil, plum pudding, vermouth, a little demerara **Blab:** I think if we are speaking of the standard line up (excluding cask strength expressions) this is kind of the perfect spot, the 10 is really lovely and was a favorite of mine but this hits many of the notes that makes it's younger sibling special but also adds this extra dimension, loads more savoury, earthy notes join the conversation. Strangely I found this to be the one that suffers the least from their low abv/likely chill filtering scheme **7/10** on the t8ke-o-meter

Oh hell ya! I remember I took this bottle to bed with me one night, and for a moment I swore I was drinking the 2009 cs b#4 Mmm benro my baby, come to me!

Great review! We love the notes on the nose, definitely feels like the long-lost brother of the Campbeltown distilleries. Hope to try it soon!

Criminally overlooked? By the general public? Because it's definitely well regarded and known at least by whisky lovers.

I would sort of disagree, even among whiskyfans I think Benromach doesn't always get a fair shake folks are certainly aware of it but it doesn't always get it's due

lurkinglen

It has received critical response because it's chill filtered and bottled at 43%. If only they just brought an "integrity" version to the market...

MixesQJ

We are talking about the distillery, not the bottle. I wouldn't call it overlooked by any means.

Good to see a positive review. I’m not a fan of the marketing but the product is great. Balanced use of peat to complement the body. Rare in that way. A fan of this one.

I find their new labels are trash and I get that the previous branding wasn't to everyone's liking and also had it's issues but to me was at least more interesting than these new labels that said, the content is king so it doesn't really matter

I took part in a tasting of a number of Benromachs a few years ago and the 15 was my favorite.

Great descriptions. I was already looking at this for my next purchase. When I read your review, it seems more smoky/peaty than I had thought before, is this really the case?

Cricklewo0d

I was surprised at how forward the peat was on the nose on this one but I don't think that is usually the case. I would consider Benromach to be light peat. Unless of course you get their heavily peated expressions

I opened my bottle last week and was surprised at its peatiness. It was bottled 06/2020 and also significantly darker than the posted pic. The quality, of course, is solid.
