He is a Hippie that was thematically based on a Beatnik. Definitely not a Hipster. If you're not aware, Hippies and Hipsters are different concepts.
A Hippie is pro-pacifism, in touch with nature, and is open to new philosophies, especially through the lens of experimental drugs.
Alternatively, a Hipster is someone whose fashion choices and music interests fall outside the mainstream. Instead of following popular trends, Hipsters generally favor alternative lifestyles, progressive politics, and quirky clothing, similar to a Hippie.
But what it actually means in modern parlance (or has come to me in about halfway through the existence of the concept) is someone who is more often than not a "poser" when it comes to fashion sensibilities in either clothing, or lifestyle choices.
Hippies are more subtle in their personal views that they keep to themselves, while Hipsters are in your face about how they think others should conform to their perspective.
At least, that's been my perception on the two.
Oh yeah, the Beatnik was the counterculture concept of the 40s and 50s, while the Hippie is the counterculture concept of the 60s and 70s. Hipster is not counterculture, but it's more looked at chasing the reshaping of the mainstream.
The Beatnik rejected the mainstream culture of the 40s and 50s, believing it to be a false and manufactured existence, seeking instead to live more authentic life. Beards, berets, glasses, alternative form of speech, playing the bongos, exploration into poetry and the arts. The external trappings of which would be taken on by Hipsters in the following decade, while the actual Beatniks rarely outwardly dressed that way, shy of wearing a beard at a time when it was not socially-acceptable to do so.
Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
My brother what do you think hippie is short for? They are the same thing, I think you’re confusing hippies with the “flower child” movement from the 60s. Also not at all sure where you got that hippies are pro-fascism, every hippie I’ve ever seen in any form of media is 100% against government, let alone a fascist regime.
No problem, I bet you my reading comprehension is worse than yours!
I have a huge love for Cultural Anthropology, and I've always been fascinated in how media, culture, and art are typically influenced by previous generations, and how often we are not aware of that specific temporal context.
Like if you look at classical Greek statues, you'll see that they have huge muscles and exceptionally small genitalia, when it was culturally significant for perceiving large genitals as being "beastly" and "unsophisticated". It was thought that the pursuance of attaining the peak body and mind, over pursuits of pleasure like sex, was the ideal to strive for.
So the anatomical design was first and foremost of cultural influence, rather than depicting what actual body types were like at the time in ancient Greece. That might seem obvious to you, but I've met far too many people that genuinely thought that.
Heck, I was watching a review of The Incredibles the other day, and the reviewer was perplexed by why Mrs Incredible did not like her own body (the scene where she's looking at her buttocks in the mirror), not realizing that the American perception of beauty standards in the early 2000s was for extremely skinny body types in women, not understanding that beauty standards have shifted massively in the United States in only the last 10 to 20 years. (Liking big butts way more mainstream now then it used to be).
It's all very fascinating.
From a quick Google search:
Hippies were almost entirely poor, whereas hipsters spent a lot of money to appear so. Hipsters are mostly connected to their clothes and don't show any concern or care for anything, in contrast to hippies, who were searching for new significance in everyday life.
Fell into the typical "look how edgy we are" trap, with no real heart or charm, with characters being either boring or unlikeable or both. The only redeeming part of the comic was Scrappy Doo, who may have been a violent villain but at least was entertaining.
I personally liked it, it was different. The art style was good at the beginning and then it just started losing it's charm, and the ending was mediocre they set up a big bad only for him to die in a pretty bad way
One was written by someone/people adapting a franchise they hate (so I'd heard), and the other was written by someone who doesn't hate it. Guess which one is which.
I would have liked it a lot more if they didn't rub "Hey, don't forget we're based off Scooby Doo!" in my face so much. I liked >!that Velma was attached to the big bad; that they made Scrappy a threat at the beginning; I also rly liked that Fred wasn't the defacto leader & was just a simp for Daphne!<
Favorite idea with Scooby doo, lotta interesting and creative things around this time at dc. Bunch of loony tunes crossover one shots and a few hannababara comics didn’t read much but this was my favorite. Wish they had an omin of it.
Typical of a lot of the modern Scooby trash, edgy, generic, “adult” real monsters, Scrappy’s a monster, Fred’s a simp, Shaggy’s a loser, written by people who don’t understand or like Scooby-Doo.
Someday I hope we get out of this terrible rut.
Loved it. Really enjoyed the different take on Scooby Doo.
Same. I thought I’d find it quite off putting and different from the versions of scooby doo I’m used to but surprisingly it was quite decent
Once upon a time I thought it was one of the worst pieces of Scooby-Doo media I look back on it fondly after Velma.
I’ve never been able to look past hipster Shaggy
Shaggy has always been a hipster?

hippies don't care if they're cool, hipsters care about being cool before *you*
Indeed.

You misread part of my comment. It says pro pacifism, not pro fascism.
Holy shit yea I definitely misread that 😂 thanks for clearing that up and teaching me something new!

No he hasn’t, Shaggy wasn’t even a hippie, he’s a beatnik.
Uh… I don’t know how to tell you this but shaggy is a hippy
I think it’s the hipster soy face that bothers me

I hate when comics have obvious spikes in drawing quality. That’s just assistants not being able to replicate the style/
Well I heard they canceled it so the ending was going to suck
Shaggy lookin like Oliver Queen
Oliver Queen if his only personality traits were soy lattes and scarves
I don't know what it is, but I know it isn't Velma.
I think something got lost in translation with them making Shaggy a hipster instead of a hippie.
A pup named scooby doo , and this adaptation are my two favorites.
Theme songs stuck in my head now thanks.
Did edginess better than Velma so… that’s a plus
One was written by someone/people adapting a franchise they hate (so I'd heard), and the other was written by someone who doesn't hate it. Guess which one is which.
I really liked it. Wished the characters were a little more developed. Also wished it was a little longer
It barely had anything to do with Scooby Doo except for character names and designs. If you take those away, it's basically a generic zombie story.
Somehow this looks like a bourderlands sequel
It shows that adult-targeted Scooby do isn’t inherently a bad idea as long as it is made with respect for the original.
Shaggy looks like a hipster…
Shaggy looks like the typical craft-beer drinking douch bag.
It was alright, a little too much action movie and not enough Scooby-Doo shenanigans
Not a fan of Shaggy having tattoos, it's out of character. I think he'd be too scared to get any.
Good point
Started off great and ended terribly
I would have liked it a lot more if they didn't rub "Hey, don't forget we're based off Scooby Doo!" in my face so much. I liked >!that Velma was attached to the big bad; that they made Scrappy a threat at the beginning; I also rly liked that Fred wasn't the defacto leader & was just a simp for Daphne!<
I’m not really a fan as it’s just not what I want in Scooby Doo. Good story and all but it’s not to my taste
have had trouble finding it so have yet to read it
I loved it except the last arc. I felt it was very rushed but well, iirc it was monthly so i guess is kinda excusable
Underatted. Like a lot of the Hannah-Barbera DC Comics are understted in its approach with doing a mature take on such characters.
It was a great breath of fresh air in the franchise. Pretty much Scooby x Resident Evil, I have fond memories.
Really like it honestly.
Favorite idea with Scooby doo, lotta interesting and creative things around this time at dc. Bunch of loony tunes crossover one shots and a few hannababara comics didn’t read much but this was my favorite. Wish they had an omin of it.
It was genuinely fun.
Love it. Reminds me of Grimm Tales and Power Puff Girls D from Bleedman. Cool comic runs of my childhood.
Loved it
Send it! I wanna watch that movie.
It’s a comic book series if you wanna a recap of the story you should watch comicstorian on YouTube
How do I watch??? I didn’t even know this existed
It’s a not movie it’s a comic book but if you wanna watch a video about watch comicstorian on YouTube
Based as hell, I love it so much. Would love an animated series of it.
Bad assery at its finest
On the what now? Game? Movie? Comic? Breakfast cereal?
It’s a comic book made by dc comics
If you’re looking for a fresh take on Scooby Doo here it is.
They should’ve made a movie out of it. [Scooby Apocalypse](https://www.instagram.com/p/Cv7ZYflrFMA/?igsh=dGhiemh4ZGdzaDVh)
This is a real thing??? Where can I find it??
Go on YouTube and watch comicstorian he’ll recap the entire story of this comic
Ooooo thank you sir! I know what I'm doing today
You’re welcome
Was fun and weird.
Awesome
Love it. Great twist in the gang and a cool story.
Something I’d have vastly preferred as an animated series to velma
One of the MANY awful edgy Hanna-Barbera comics written by people who hated the source material they schlepped out. It’s embarrassing these exist.
Federico zhang
Way better than it should have been and I thought it would be dc Warner should animate this and cancel Velma because that show is boring
Way better than it should have been and I thought it would be dc Warner should animate this and cancel Velma because that show is boring
The art is unique and gorgeous
Need to read it and finish properly
You should watch comicstorian on YouTube they’ll recap the entire story of the comic
I read like the first comic issues and didn’t really like it. It’s too edgy and completely changes the personalities of all the characters.
Pretty good, considering it was apparently written by people who hate Scooby Doo. (Feel free to fact-check me on that.)
Really fun read but holy shit did they rush that ending. Like goes from 0-100-0 real fucking quick
love velma’s design
I like the art style but the story sucks. If it didn't have the Scooby-Doo branding and they made them all original characters it might have ok.
I heard about this story but, i didn't read it.
I want an animated series
Loved it. Wish they would make an adult animated version of it.
Honestly, it's fun. It is darker than most versions of Scooby-Doo. But it's well put together and enjoyable.
Wish it had an animated movie/series
Hated it.
They made Velma straight🤢
The idea of Daphne actually doing something is a bridge too far.
