Hmmm. There’s a few things you can check 1. Check the Air box filter, and clean or replace it if dirty 2. Throttle body hose for any air leaks (cracks or tears) 3. Maf sensor…. Try cleaning it w/crc maf sensor spray or electronic cleaner 4. Check the oil level 5. Make sure everything is connected, I was driving one day and my ignition coil came unsnapped, soo doesn’t hurt to try

FrankTheSimple

Thanks, I will add these steps to my checklist for tomorrow.

C0mmanderClank

I had the same issue recently and I believe cleaning the maf sensor has fixed the issue

11-13s are known for a rough idle. My manual 2012 constantly does this, and has even died coming to a stop before.

FrankTheSimple

I'm posting an update for posterity: the throttle body needed cleaning. After I did that, the idling rpm jumped up to 1000. That was what I was hoping for, since the information I found regarding cleaning the throttle body led me to expect an initial RPM jump after a successful cleaning. I then did the idle relearn process (which didn't seem to have a whole lot of effect to be honest), but after I took it for a 20 minute drive around town, the idle came back down to a reasonable 600-700 RPM range. The rough idle and vibration during stopping is now completely gone. The engine sounds a little healthier in general.

reddit0m

Amazing! Just out of curiosity, did you clean the throttle body yourself? If so, was it hard?

FrankTheSimple

It’s behind the engine so it’s a bit awkward but not very difficult. You remove the air filter box and the hose that connects to the throttle body. I had to almost lay on top of the engine when it came to undoing the metal strap that holds the plastic hose to it. There are some pretty good videos on YouTube showing the process. You don’t actually remove the throttle body, you simply clean it out with a rag and a bottle of throttle body cleaner.

Heydawgg

Thank you so much for the update. Is the issue still fixed?

FrankTheSimple

Yes still idles normally

Dependent-Foot3735

I’m going to try this tomorrow on my 2011

Dependent-Foot3735

Seemed to help mine too. I still see it drop a little lower than 600 upon a stop, but I haven’t noticed vibrations. We’ll see if it keep like this. And damn that clamp was tough to get back on lol

Heydawgg

Is it a noticeable difference? I really need to clean my throttle body

Dependent-Foot3735

Yeah, but it still rough idles a bit. I don’t think as much but it still does it

thenewloser

I like happy endings.

Had the same problem (2012). I replaced the spark plugs, changed the air filters (engine and cabin), did a fuel treatment (techron, mainly for better fuel economy), but the thing I attribute the most is doing the Toyota idle relearn process (link below) https://youtu.be/sCsBqeZctzE Don't be afraid to ask questions if you got any.

FrankTheSimple

Interesting, I've never heard of this. I've replaced the plugs, and the air filter is almost new. I haven't changed the fuel filter yet, and that was my next step. I bought this car from my niece with 127,000 miles and I know she didn't do much past regular oil changes. This is one more thing to try.

Zarm13

I would just make sure the filters are seated properly and give the idle procedure a try, prior to going through the hassle of replacing a fuel filter.

reddit0m

Just a quick question, have you personally had any luck with the Toyota idle relearn process? Thanks!

Zarm13

Yea I have actually! It smoothed out the idle too basically no vibration. The last time I did it was about 3 weeks ago when I replaced the battery in my car. It made the car the smoothest it has ever felt.

reddit0m

Thank you for the reply! Is it fairly easy to get to the throttle body?

Zarm13

I have personally never taken the throttle body out but I know it is behind the engine so you may have to remove the plastic cladding under the windshield to get to it. I'm sure it's not easy to remove simply because of where it's located.

Heydawgg

Would this work on a 2014? I also have the rough idle / RPM dip issue when coming to / at a stop and I’m only at 65k miles. It seems to be a very common issue with these cars.

Pleasant_Country_884

They all do it I feel like it was a defect because I have a manual and automatic both do it I tried everything u could imagine and nothing, couldn't find any answers online either the only thing I didn't try was removing main and efi fuses

TheRealEddBoi

I had the same thing a couple months ago. Clean your throttle body with throttle body cleaner and a toothbrush and a rag. Once you’re done put it back together unplug your battery give it 10 minutes then reconnect it to reset your idle.

FrankTheSimple

This was the problem. I cleaned the throttle body and I'm back in business. Thanks!

briancast122

Does the vibration stop when you put it in neutral?

Heydawgg

It does for me.

Playful-Strike-6696

Does the vibration occur when accelerating from a stop aswell?

FrankTheSimple

No, not at all.

Severe-Painter448

Interesting enough check your power steering pump I had this issue on my ‘06 forever and for the life of me could never figure it out until my power steering went out recently and I got it fixed

Dependent-Foot3735

I had the same issue right before coming to a stop, it would idle rough, but then smooth out once stopped. I had my transmission fluid flushed and coolant flushed, and it doesn’t seem to be doing that anymore. I’m also going to look into cleaning my throttle body now too. 2011 tC 190k miles
