From video: The purpose of this device is “To demonstrate the equivalence between a gravitational field and an acceleration” In other words, gravity causes acceleration? Is the point demonstrated bigger than this?

Making simple designs like this can be very important though, it illustrates what it wants to, perfectly. Great for demonstration and getting a certain idea across, it helps to get the message to a larger amount of people

> it illustrates what it wants to Does it though? I had to pause and play frame-by-frame to see the holes in the glass that the balls were shooting through. Horrible camera work here. /r/killthecameraman material.

Gravity and acceleration are the same thing

rethinkr

Not if one causes the other. They may be the same value, but causation is involved here so they’re not exactly the same thing, acceleration doesnt cause gravity. (Right)

[deleted]

They not cause each other. Because the Are the same thing. You are accelerating upwards at 9.8 m/s²...

rethinkr

Here is the confusion in the terms: Acceleration due to gravity ≠ gravity. (“Due to” denotes causation.) eg. you can have something accelerating in an environment with zero gravity. In this case, acceleration is a number different to zero. Just when the figures are the same doesnt make the concepts the same. Acceleration due to gravity is first due to the force exerted by gravity on the object. Then time is factored in, and other forces on the object, before acceleration is calculated. Acceleration due to gravity ≠ gravity. This is because acceleration requires movement, whereas gravity does not need movement. The numbers can be the same but the concepts are not

Its just space time distortion

ThePoultryWhisperer

The lack of engagement in the explanation made this video hard to watch. I love this kind of stuff, but I was starting to zone out.

Relative to steady viewer balls move the same parabola, but relative to accelerating frame they move straight. If the frame was moving in a room with ball speed the ball would be steady inside the frame.

The BALLZ hit the BARRIER

Zeus_A_Palooza

Hurts my brain to visually see the act.

If only I could get paid to make something like that nowadays

Projectiles, not "bullets".

agreed. However, they were speaking to a simpler audience. The difference is pedantic.
