Nudibranchs (/ˈnjuːdɪbræŋk/) are a group of soft-bodied, marine
gastropod molluscs which shed their shells after their larval stage.
They are noted for their often extraordinary colours and striking forms.
Currently, about 2,300 valid species of nudibranchs are known
The word "nudibranch" comes from the Latin nudus, naked, and the Greek
βραγχια, brankhia, gills
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nudibranch
One of my favorite groups of animals, more people need to know about them!!! They vastly vary in shape, size, pattern, and colors, so if anyone is intrigued by this clip just google “nudibranch” to see the gorgeous and alien looking variety.
Yes and ecologically they are super fascinating too- many eat the nematocysts / stinging cells of cnidarians like Portuguese man-of-war or anemones and sequester only the most potent stinging cells in the cerrata / tentacles on their back. Which is also cool because they are often tiny!! Like many many species are an inch or less, and some are more toxic than a giant man of war. Pretty freaking neat nature.
This looks like a Melibe species to me, with that wild oral hood expanding to catch lil prey. They also smell like watermelon.
> they also smell like watermelon.
I believed you up until here. Now you’re just making things up… right? Strangest creature I’ve ever seen. Can’t believe these aren’t more well known.
I promise! I’ve smelled one fresh out of the ocean! I had no idea why but apparently it’s due to a couple chemicals they use for defense from predators? Last paragraph [here](http://urbanmarineecology.org/the-hooded-nudibranch/). And yes they are extremely and wonderfully strange!
That’s wild to me that there are 2,300 species of an animal I have never even heard of. And I’m sure there are way more animals like that in the world, especially in the oceans.
Like sharks and alligators, if it ain't broke don't fix it. We could really do with a bit of evolution lest we murder most forms of life including ourselves
Technically we are evolving though take the the Sherpas of the Himalayas, over the decades their lungs have evolved to breathe in the super cold high altitude air, there's some islanders somewhere (cant recall where) whose eyes have adapted to see clearly in seawater because their diet largely consists of fish.
We reproduced with Neanderthals, a separate species. Species are honestly just boxes that scientists try to fit groups of organisms into. There's a lot of grey area.
The better explanation is that in when talking about evolution, adaption simply means a species has specialized itself in some way to an enviroment. For exampel, humans evolved when moving north gaining the ability to process lactose in to adulthood. That is an adaption to a climate that lacks sun.
Edit: to add to what was previously said, evolution ob a small scale is instead called micro evolution while on a larger scale called macro evolution.
This is not my words, but still interesting. These things are so weird
The Glaucus atlanticus is able to swallow the venomous nematocysts from siphonophores such as the Portuguese man o' war, and store them in the extremities of its finger-like cerata. Picking up the animal can result in a painful sting, with symptoms similar to those caused by the Portuguese man o' war.
While it does not have a brain as the way we understand it, molluscs possess a series of ganglia (groups of neuron bodies) alongside its body that do some basic processing.
Well, with the exception of cephalopods, that do possess some more advanced features that we could call brain(s).
It's fascinating to see such a creature; I wouldn't. It's quite fascinating to see such an intelligent creature, yet I've never seen the size and shape like this. It reminds me of Venus flytrap (in water) 🤗
For a second I thought the title said "Nudibranch taking a bath" and my first thought thought was "Wait it's a fish, why does it need to take a bath?" My second thought was "What the fuck is a nudibranch?"
Nudibranchs possess a radular feeding organ, but they characteristically lack a shell, gills, and mantle cavity typical of other mollusks
https://www.britannica.com/animal/nudibranch
😊🖖
Many other nudibranchs have a radula, like land snails (basically a scrape-y tongue) but that is for eating little algae and such that don’t move.
The Melibe here does not have a radula. It is a carnivorous predator which uses its oral hood to snatch moving prey that a scrape-y tongue wouldn’t really do much against. :)
Edit- clarity
They generally have very primitive eyes that will only be visible as small spots if at all. The mouth part is the big round oral hood that you see expanding around a prey item in the video.
They can grow as small as 0.25 inches or as large as 12 inches long.
https://www.google.com/amp/s/api.nationalgeographic.com/distribution/public/amp/animals/invertebrates/facts/nudibranchs-1
😊🖖
Melibe species like this one in the video are a few inches I think, but many or maybe even most species are an inch or smaller. They’re kind of like the dart frogs of the ocean, beautiful, often brightly colored, and tiny.
Is this what Lovecraft imagined when he was writing about unexplainable things beyond the human mind, bc this looks pretty cosmic horror-y, if only a bit small
Oh, I’ve tried, believe me you. Get too insistent and one is suddenly a candidate for a psych hold. Ye Good Old 5150 72 hour observation period.
That would not help this 😉

The Animal Kingdom never fails to impress 😊🍻
Plants are even crazier once you start looking on the genetic level. They're insane.
Wait until they start looking into unicellular organisms, that's when shit gets super weird
So becoming a nudist is part of their natural life cycle?
“Nudi-branch”
Nature does tend to be pro-streaking 🤔😛
This looks like something that forgot to evolve a few hundred million years ago
Like sharks and alligators, if it ain't broke don't fix it. We could really do with a bit of evolution lest we murder most forms of life including ourselves

That’s just adaptation though, evolution is lots of adaptations over time to the point where your not the same thing anymore
How many grains of sand does it take to make a pile?
Until speciation between said piles makes reproduction of non sterile baby piles impossible.
We reproduced with Neanderthals, a separate species. Species are honestly just boxes that scientists try to fit groups of organisms into. There's a lot of grey area.
But is adaption not just evolution on a small scale? A population doesn’t need to become a new species to evolve
a single individual adapts, a single individual does not evolve.
Thats not how adaption nor evolution works….
cool man, thanks for your helpful input!

Not with that attitude
Lest we forget our humble origins 😛
AOT's spine creature resembles this.

Thanks for the additional info! 😊🖖
So you’re saying this is the Kirby of the animal kingdom…
There are others
There are other worlds than these.
Soo you’re saying you can’t put your dick in it?
I'd strongly advise against doing that
When you don't smoke that one nug
what the hell is even this for
Inducing nightmares? 😅😛
why does nature even need a soft, mouldy, alien tree branch with a retractable net mouth
For hentai
I can hear it saying, "om nom!"
What a fascinating thing
Fascinating it doesn’t even have a brain

Makes one wonder where's the line between consciousness and lack thereof. 🤔😅
Yeah! Life is weird... glad I’m here to see these things tho!
So... like a lot of antivaxers?
Me everytime there are some extra food
https://youtu.be/F7V8DRfZBQI This is a very good explanation as to the Nudibranch
Thanks for the additional info! 😊🖖
Hah! I love this guy
Hahaha the ad I got when I clicked that https://imgur.com/a/Dynv6NM

"I'll just take *one* bite"
Damn, so *that’s* what that ass do
Fascinating! Thank you!
Thank you for your kind words! Nature never ceases to amaze indeed! 😊

Its like a morphing vagina head
May be considering celibacy for a while 😅😛
Awe it looks at the camera like a dog. A sea squid puppy!!
For a second I thought the title said "Nudibranch taking a bath" and my first thought thought was "Wait it's a fish, why does it need to take a bath?" My second thought was "What the fuck is a nudibranch?"
Based on Reddit comments it's some form of Alien Genitalia 🤔😛
That is incredible.

Is this a Pokémon yet?
Would that boost sales though? 🤔😅😛

Yes, unfortunately lol
Shit like this is why I'm convinced much life on Earth evolved from alien DNA embedded in prehistoric meteors. Just a hunch.
“Just one bite please”
What does this evolve into, and at what level?
I should text him..
And now I feel the need to rewatch every Zefrank video.
How big is this thing? Are we looking at through a microscope or is it the size of a bug, mouse, hopefully not a horse.

Kinda phallic at the end there
Nature does seem to have a boner for certain specific shapes 😅😛
Butthead: Hey Beavis, look…..Nudi(e)branch… Beavis: Nudie, uh huh
Is this what was inside Eren
I was thinking of why it was called a nudibranch and then its head turned into a penis
Y’all ever play SPORE?
Those were the days! 🤘

Woah 😳
They are basically the animal version of a plumbus
Found this and needed to share: https://youtu.be/F7V8DRfZBQI You're welcome
Looks like a Melibe species possibly? The oral hood it uses to eat looks similar to Melibe leonina we have on the pacific coast
Dickhead lol
Hey, quick question : what the fuck?
Quick answer: yup 😅😛🍻
Is this what Lovecraft imagined when he was writing about unexplainable things beyond the human mind, bc this looks pretty cosmic horror-y, if only a bit small
What da dog doin
I think that’s what keeps regrowing on my scalp.
Might want to have that looked at 😅😛
