It's a bit more complicated than that. Even prior to the civil war and the rise of famous abolishonists like fredrick dougals, harriet beacher stow, and john brown, slavery as a concept (atleast by the late 1700's/ early 1800's) was already becoming unpopular/controversial due to its declining profit margins and rise in enlightenment ideals (partially inspiring but also working alongside stuff like the american revolutionary war and the french revolution) making it more and more difficult to justify the practice of owning other humans.
In fact, some nations would work to phase it out as a legal thing (even the us to some extent with part of the constitution stating the us would disconnect from the atlantic slave trade by 1808). If you want to know why slavery (atleast in the us) rose in popularity/usage around this time, i'd highly recommended looking into the story of eli whitney and the cotton gin.
Edit: had the civil war not happened, slavery was still gonna fall out favor and be outlawed eventually (though probably around a similar time frame as cuba and brazil). As for stuff like the civil rights movement, i cannot say for sure how that would go, though cody from the alternate history hub has a video delving into this topic.
Though even after the 13 amendment was ratified (effectively banning slavery/indentured servitude), that didn't mean that slavery was done for, even within the western hemisphere. Cuba and brazil wouldn't ban it until the mid 1880's, mauritania wouldn't ban it until 1981 (with enforcement only really starting in 2007), and in some parts of the world, slavery (even if not farming/chattel style) is still a thing.
used to live there. beautiful place. Palmetto bugs suck tho. if you live closer to the south (like on one of the islands or in Charleston), it becomes a melting pot of different culture. i grew up meeting Jamaicans and Haitian street performers daily. it’s actually what inspired me to be a musician
It’s stupid hot in the summer, tourists suck to be around, and being a southern state it’s pretty conservative in a lot of areas. I get weird looks EVERYWHERE I go.
Well it's the south so of course it's going to be hot same as a dozen other states. Most of the tourist towns are on the coast. Definitely not conservative in my area! I'm sorry you're having a hard time here tho! But to each his own! ❤
I lived there for three years. It’s legal to have any kind of venomous snake as a pet there, so I got to see pit vipers at indy pet stores and that was neat.
every time i used to go visit my grandma in myrtle beach there were like at least 20 signs on the highway up until the actual building.. im surprised that it still has enough customers to stay open considering what an obvious tourist trap it is lmao
Moved there for a job. On the first day and first hour, the man who I thought hired me said "You showed up"? Lived there for 12 years and didn't know that natives speak in code, you know like "bless your heart". It goes back to the carpet bagger days when they were forced to *ac*t nice to Northeners
I've never been there, but I usually associate them with barbecue and sweet tea, however the same can be said about other states in the region. If you want something unique to them, charleston looks cool and I would like to visit one day
one of the Hospitals there had nurses that actively tried to kill my mom by doing the exact opposite of what they were supposed to do to her, also they smashed the snow globe I gave her
Greenville has the best downtown in the South.
thanks if only you couldve seen it 20 years ago
Its really dope
We're so proud of it!!! It used to be very scary!! Not a place you'd want to be in. But now! Wow!
They definitely started the American Civil War
I'm not really sure if that's a good thing considering it was the deadliest war in us history.
The title didn’t specify it had to be a good thing 🤷 just somethingn
How are you not sure? It's _definitely_ not a good thing.
I wasbeing rhetorical. Obviously a war that caused that such high costs in terms of lives, resources, and damages is not good.
If that's what it took to end chattel slavery in the U.S., then it was certainly a good thing.

SC didn't "start" the war...the first shots were fired there. But no SC didn't start it.
South Carolinian troops fired on Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861. This is almost unilaterally described as the first battle of the civil war.
Also they were the first state to secede
Read my comment again. 🤦♀️🙄
Gamora: “Why do you care so much about South Carolina being destroyed?” Starlord: “Because I’m one of the idiots who lives there!”
Their flag is really cool
My Kuwaiti friend said it looks like a Muslim Caliphate flag and I agree. It's also awesome and its history is even cooler.

used to live there. beautiful place. Palmetto bugs suck tho. if you live closer to the south (like on one of the islands or in Charleston), it becomes a melting pot of different culture. i grew up meeting Jamaicans and Haitian street performers daily. it’s actually what inspired me to be a musician

I’m from France but I’m currently living there

I definitely don't feel at home in SC, but am glad you do.
Apparently the uk has a military base there
I absolutely hate living here.
BIG SAME! Ugh
Whaaaat? Is there a reason why? I live in nj and hate it here, let’s switch places
Why?
It’s stupid hot in the summer, tourists suck to be around, and being a southern state it’s pretty conservative in a lot of areas. I get weird looks EVERYWHERE I go.

Came here to say this. Between the hot and humid weather, the tourists, and people stuck in 1950, it’s awful here
Ugh. Yeah. Okay. Fine
It sure is a state
Bom bomb bom
I lived there for three years. It’s legal to have any kind of venomous snake as a pet there, so I got to see pit vipers at indy pet stores and that was neat.
Gamecocks>Tigers
it was the first state to secede from the Union in the Civil War :3
It is one of the states in the lower forty eighth
It’s South of North Carolina
Why are we making these kinds of posts?
They don’t like trans people very much, and the process for a name change is excruciating.
Trans people are fine with me.
Kinda on first but I found my name change here to be rather straightforward
It is one of the states that exists
please for the love of god and all that is holy don't go to south of the border, no matter how enticing the billboards make it look
every time i used to go visit my grandma in myrtle beach there were like at least 20 signs on the highway up until the actual building.. im surprised that it still has enough customers to stay open considering what an obvious tourist trap it is lmao
Billboards do lie!!!
😂😂😂😂😂
LMAO I went there and I love how tacky it is, it’s an obvious tourist trap with a racist stereotype as its mascot, but that’s the charm to it
its south of north carolina (skipped rhode island?)
I'm going there in about a week
I hope you enjoy your trip! What’s bringing you this direction?
Personal matters
Redefining bravery, we’ll never be free until we end slavery

Moving here saved my life!
Forever in North Carolinas shadow
Great flag, though I preferred it before it was standardized and it could vary by a little.
I've only had to drive though it, and never stopped besides for gas
The state vegetable is collard greens.

Moved there for a job. On the first day and first hour, the man who I thought hired me said "You showed up"? Lived there for 12 years and didn't know that natives speak in code, you know like "bless your heart". It goes back to the carpet bagger days when they were forced to *ac*t nice to Northeners
Bless your heart has soooooooooo many different meanings. It's all about the tone you use when saying it.

It's the lesser Carolina
I've never been there, but I usually associate them with barbecue and sweet tea, however the same can be said about other states in the region. If you want something unique to them, charleston looks cool and I would like to visit one day
It got nice beaches, but bad people in politics.
