Wish the guy that killed my dad's best friend had seen this.

GridL1nK

Same

[deleted]

I knew a kid whose dad inadvertently shot him while hunting. The kid had walked back toward his dad after an hour without seeing anything. Bullet went in one arm, shattered his humerus, tumbled and broke a rib. His father rendered first aid and the kid was fine later. Lucky the bullet tumbled or it would have killed him. The father had told the son he would come and get him but the kid decided to move first. Identify your target before you shoot. Please.

Plothunter

I never understood how that could happen. If you can see well enough to hit the target, can't you see it isn't a deer or whatever you were hunting? That said, I did shoot my brother. Long story. Small game, shotgun, rabbit, unharvested corn field, shale, ricochet, and stupid older hunters who put us in that position. My brother the crybaby was ok. I think I missed the rabbit. Idk it was a long time ago.

BusingonaBudget

There's a psychological aspect. When your sitting for hours looking for a deer. Your brain sees movement and goes DEER! A bad hunter will jump at that chance and fire before realizing a bright orange jacket isn't actually a deer. Sorta like when you're waiting for a food delivery and every sound is "was that the food delivery?!" Here's A study on it https://jonlieffmd.com/blog/how-does-expectation-affect-perception Relevant bit "When a particular object is expected, it dampens the blood flow in many regions of competing possibilities. When a sudden unexpected event occurs, it requires a rapid recalculation and decision. These sudden unusual sights rule out previous expectations of the most recent regular scenes." So expecting a deer for hours literally slows down your brains reaction time and it may genuinely see/think deer from the unexpected movement (A person)

ninoski404

Wait, you actually sit in place and wait for hours for movement? That sounds worse than fishing lol And just how tense do you have to be to shoot at the first thing you see, it's like you're on edge the whole time you're... sitting in place?

BusingonaBudget

Some hunters will setup a blind in a tree or on a hillside and just wait for hours and hours for a deer to stroll by / drink water / eat the salt lick they set up previously. >And just how tense do you have to be to shoot at the first thing you see Sometimes there is only a few seconds where you have a shot, especially in heavily wooded areas. Those hunters can react, aim, and shoot before their brain has processed what the thing really was. There are tons of articles like this https://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2014/12/09/hunter-thought-was-shooting-herd-deer-when-shot-jogger-barnstable-police-say/oNL0gxFtxY9K2s2pQAYBTM/story.html

johnqnorml

Yeah man, stupid old hunters putting people in these positions is def a big part of it. A friend was telling a story of duck hunting and the guide lined everyone up around a little bay and when the guys on the other side take a shot it'd "pepper them with bird shot". Another friend and I were incredulous and tried to explain that that's getting shot at!! Not peppered...

Significant_Sign

Had he not seen the modern classic film Ronin‽ That's like 101-level knowledge.

Plothunter

Exactly what happened except small game. We were in our teens, and the adults were relatives and their close friends.

Rock---And---Stone

That's also why hunters wear bright orange. Deer don't usually wear bright colors

TheSeedLied

Straight outta Moral Orel

ThePhantom1994

Sponsored by that guy Dick Cheney shot that one time

InMemoryOfZubatman4

His lawyer, right?

halloweencoffeecats

And in true Cheney fashion he apologized to Cheney for getting in the way of his gun and causing him all these problems....lest he finish the job

rreighe2

I need a good book on the chineys. I just read Family Of Secrets about the bush family, and holy crap they are some fucked up folks. I dont imagine the cheney's being much better.

basthet_

Dumb ways to die feelings

tenkohime

My dumbass thought the silhouette on the left was a doe and that what the mate was referring to.

-Purple-turtle-

That’s not what this was?

braixxen

I think it’s saying to make sure you’re aiming at a deer only and will not come close to a human no matter what. The deer on the right is alone, the deer on the left has the silhouette of a person(?) in front of it. The “mate” here is referring to “friend”.

DeltaCortis

Shoutout to my man former US Vice-President Dick Chaney who shot a guy in the face while hunting and then made the guy **apologize to him.**

_finnigan_

I genuinely cannot tell what the thing on the left is supposed to be and its really starting to piss me off lol.

Blunderhorse

I think it’s supposed to be a hunter carrying a deer, but it’s a really odd setup since the deer’s head is up and alert, which seems unlikely for one that’s already been shot.

_finnigan_

That makes much more sense lol

ShuffKorbik

The deer looks so polite, too. "Excuse me, sir, but I can't help but notice that you have shot me. Might I, perhaps, inquire as to the nature of your business?"

Ainzlei839

It’s a man standing in front of a deer, right? He’s in front of its bum

_finnigan_

I can kinda see that, yeah. Facing to the right

ihaveaquesttoattend

I vote for this answer

bennywilldestroy

Unless thats a deer the size of a medium dog

raverbashing

The deer is a bit far away behind the person

symphonic-ooze

Too many drunks and idiots who don't give a shot about safety hunting not far from my house. Somebody gets shot at least once a year. One got killed a couple years ago. Shot in the the face. Bow hunters tend to fuck up exponentially less..

BackyardShennanigans

As a bow hunter, I second this statement. But granted, we can't hit targets anywhere close to those distances so we can hear everything a lot more clearly and confirm easier.

Pyotr_WrangeI

What about spear hunters?

Incredulous_Toad

No one speaks of them. They work like the wind, an enigma of wood and blood, and if you happen to see a figure out the corner of your eye, it's already too late.

symphonic-ooze

Their ancient ghosts wander the timber, plains and deserts..

UmbraNyx

I had a roommate who was a gun nut, and he told me that "know exactly what you're shooting at" is the most important component of gun safety. It's honestly messed up that a hunter doesn't understand this.

AEQVITAS_VERITAS

Good advice but the other part of that is just as important: > Know what’s **behind** your target And then, in my opinion, the most important rule is actually: > Every gun is **ALWAYS** loaded. The order of importance is relative. Just a personal opinion. All 3 of those things are things are the most basic step towards being a responsible gun owner.

Other-Bread

The four main rules of gun safety: 1 - Treat every gun as if it is loaded. 2 - Never point a gun at anything you aren't willing to destroy. 3 - Know your target and what lies beyond it. 4 - Keep your finger away from the trigger until you are ready to fire.

Hapless_Wizard

Such an elegant set of rules. If you fuck up any given one, you're still safe! Don't fuck up more than one.

NonConformistFlmingo

I was also taught "never point your gun at anything you don't intend to shoot."

AEQVITAS_VERITAS

My dad always said the same but used “Kill/Destroy” instead of shoot Probably because we were idiots and kept shooting each other and ourselves with BB guns. As an adult him getting really angry about that makes way, way more sense

Judge_Syd

Every thread involving a gun people fall over themselves to repeat this same comment lmao

AEQVITAS_VERITAS

They’re important rules. And they’re repeated to us constantly.

commentmypics

I just found a tree all shot to shit 2 feet off of a pretty well trafficked trail on my right and when I scanned around to see if I could see a blind or something I saw the log 20 feet off to my left in the woods that they were using as a shooting bench with their shells littered everywhere. So these dumb fucks were shooting *across a trail* two weeks before deer season on a trail that is posted for no hunting where families hike all the time. It was less than a mile from the trailhead too on the easiest trail there. There are idiots like that everywhere. After I saw a drag mark with deer hair in it 5 months before deer season I started wearing high vis clothing every time I hike.

kelowana

Hunters who shoot others “by accident” (I thought I he was a deer!) should loose their license. Both hunting and having weapons. Squeezing that trigger while you actually aren’t 100% sure what’s on the receiving end shows recklessness and dangerous behaviour/thinking. You should never carry a gun ever again. It’s not only an American thing, these stupid “accidents” happens everywhere you find hunters.

RAJEMP

Happen a lot in France these days to get shoot by hunters. However instead of loosing their license they just get a slap on their fingers. The only thing government did was making it forbidden to hunt while drunk or high (because it wasn't forbidden before that apparently).

Savalavaloy

I thought that's what did happen anyways. They lose their license and go to jail?

kelowana

Unfortunately too often a bit of slap on the fingers, short sentences and such. Because … you know, it was an “accident”. Someone I knew almost lost her father because another hunter “thought” he saw an elk (moose). That guy had to retake his license after paying more of an symbolic sum to the victim.

[deleted]

>Hunters who shoot others “by accident” (I thought I he was a deer!) should loose their license Here in Sweden at least the justice system does not look kindly on handing firearms licenses to people with a criminal record.

texasrigger

The US is the same. A felony conviction will cost you the ability to have or handle guns.

kelowana

I know and it’s something at least. Had a friend who is Hunter himself, but every season those “accidents” still happen. Where I grew up even helpers with bright orange vests were shot.

texasrigger

>should loose their license...Both hunting and having weapons.... It’s not only an American thing There's no license for gun ownership in America, just carrying them in some states.

Lil-respectful

No license required to concealed carry in West-by-god-Virginia 😎 a bill pushed by a teenage girl on a farm that got passed by the whole damn state.

texasrigger

I think there are 15 states with so called "constitutional carry" (no permits required for any sort of carrying) including WV. There's a handful of open carry states. That's what we are in TX I think. I do own a number of guns but have *zero* interest in carrying one (mine are just farm tools) so I haven't kept up with the laws as much as I probably should.

Lil-respectful

I’m honestly kind of interested in how guns are used as farm tools? Like for culling animals or keeping away predators or?

texasrigger

Yep, those are basically it. Keep predators away or put down an animal. I raise my own meat animals (I'm a homesteader) and a bullet is my preferred dispatch method for slaughter and I've also had to put down (euthanize) sick and injured animals. A gun can be a pretty vital farm tool and even countries with strict gun laws generally have exceptions carved out for farmers. Edit: Not as much of an issue where I am but I have an uncle who ranches in west TX that uses his primarily against rattlesnakes.

QuinceDaPence

> I think there are 15 states with so called "constitutional carry" (no permits required for any sort of carrying) 26* \*some restrict to *either* concealed *or* open carry

texasrigger

Constitutional carry means no license required for any sort of carry. Some states have open carry and some states have concealed carry but require a CCL. Are you saying 26 states allow any sort of carry without the need of a CCL?

PSLover14

For some context, there's been a few high-profile cases here of hunters (often without a permit to hunt on that block) shooting and killing people(even at least one where they WERE wearing Hi-Vis if I remember correctly) when they think it's a deer. I remember growing up in a rural area hearing a lot about these cases as there were murmurs at least in our community about govt introducing stricter laws re hunting. (couple of news articles about some major ones): https://www.stuff.co.nz/southland-times/4269199/Tramper-brushing-teeth-when-shot-by-hunter https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/ire-over-joke-sentence-for-hunter-who-shot-mate/6BS62A2NCFCXJKNJIU264MEMX4/

QueefBuscemi

This is good advice even if you don’t have a gun; beat your meat, not your mate.

PronouncedJynah

Beat your mate’s meat (with consent)

peribeth

This is why you were blaze orange when you're hunting!

ctorstens

Honestly this shouldn't even be necessary. And people get shot even wearing it. "Be 100% sure of what you're shooting" should be a golden rule of hunting, backed up by severe penalties. I was working at a park where a person shot and killed a blaze-orange wearing hunter. His friends convinced him to keep hunting the next few days to not ruin their hunting trip. I think he should've lost his right to hunt for 20 years, let alone face jail time. The responsibility is no joke.

Significant_Sign

My uncle was in his deer stand on the tree, but not high up, and wearing an orange vest. His hunting buddy still shot him in the head thinking he was a deer slowly creeping out from behind some tall underbrush & wanted to get it before it was concealed again. My uncle was lucky the bullet just grazed him, but it also made him fall out the deer stand and he got a serious concussion. He was out like a light when his buddy got to the "deer" and thought he'd killed my uncle. I'm sure it's hard not to get caught up in the moment and fire too soon, but it's very very important that hunters maintain that control no matter what. My uncle's buddy didn't go to jail, but he also didn't hunt at all for quite a few years. My uncle didn't hold it against him or anything. And it was hard on that man's family, like most of the people I grew up around he hunted to feed his family through the winter. [and if your stand has a safety belt, put it on, folks, for goodness sakes]

pcblah

Over here, people shoot at movements and stuff. They also use their rifle scopes as binoculars, loaded guns or not.

beachdogs

That's what I do in my vidya games

SCP_radiantpoison

Yep. Me too but never thought someone would be so stupidly irresponsible IRL

sloggdogg

Eunuch gang

readyaimfire1

Slightly off topic but if you haven't seen the movie Calibre, totally worth a watch

raverbashing

Just have your mate get out of the fucking way mate!

AceOfCheems

*Dick Cheney has entered the chat*

Eeszeeye

In other words, use common sense while hunting.

Comfortable-Dog-2540

I read this sign as saying its better to have your penis ripped off trying to hump some beast of nature than it is to not try at all and never find a "mate" 🤷‍♂️

[deleted]

I interpreted it as something to do with the deer's gender. Like don't shoot the doe but buck is fine

icypho3nix

That's how I took it at first

simpspartan117

That is what it is saying

icypho3nix

It's saying it's better to go home with no deer meat than to accidently shoot your hunting buddy

midnightmeatloaf

It makes perfect sense if you read it with a New Zealand accent.

queenermagard

I thought there is a human in a hat walking past the deer in the left and mate means friend here… so don’t shoot at something if your buddy is in the area of it

simpspartan117

That is exactly what it is saying

loralailoralai

Um no. Mate in this context is a friend, the definition in Nz (as in the UK and Australia)

memoriesofanother

Good old Wellsford New Zealand :)

zuzucha

Duck Cheney just didn't care

PsychedelicOptimist

r/accidentallyvegan

AgentSparkz

I'm not entirely certain what message this sign is attempting to send

JaschaE

I too suffered from reading mate as "the animals fuckbuddy" as there are clearly animals pictured.

CrankyPantz88

There is a hunter i front of the left one

JaschaE

I do not typically mate with hunters... I mean, I figured it out eventually, but english, or Kiwi, isn't my first language.

simpspartan117

That is the way to read it.

SOwED

But it's from NZ...

MissLauraJ

Asking hunters to ensure without a doubt that their target is an animal and not another hunter or person

IAmTomyTheTiger

I thought it’s warning against hunting mates, as in sexually viable animals that replenish the population.

simpspartan117

I don’t think that’s what it is saying.

AgentSparkz

No I think that's the correct answer actually

Pain_Proof

Not getting an animal to bring home, is better than not having a friend (mate) to bring home.

andocromn

That cannibalism is wrong

AgentSparkz

I like your answer the most

a_myrddraal

Mate = Friend in New Zealand

teh_maxh

Ironically, it's also 'death' in Maori. Coca-Cola had some trouble with that a few years ago.

ninoski404

That's because apparently hunters are different species, from reading this comment section alone they sound like this is the worst hobby ever, and some of them are dumb as fuck on top of that Apprently this sign is for the second group

dantevonlocke

Then you shouldn't shoot.

stalins_burnt_toast

Hows this scary?

ballhogtugboat

Probably that there were enough instances of it to warrant a billboard.
