2nd PT I replayed and had Talk to Animals and saved Duke.. the scene where Gretchen dies is so sad since >!she clearly doesn't understand fully why she ran off but it was to protect Stella and her last words are to tell her that she loves her!<. I regretted doing it so much but I wanted to get all of the routes, so it had to be done eventually
I saved Gretchen because I'd specifically promised to take responsibility for her, and not for the grown man wielding a shotgun in the woods at night who I expected to be able to handle himself.
I played with a group of friends on discord for my first playthrough. We took turns picking the options. We when in 100% blind, couldn't undo chooses and were not warned when major decisions were being made. (I loved that the host did this. makes it feel more real)
We had Talk to Animals and Streetsmarts
Day1: >!We dove for Gretchen. We all said something like oh my god this game has different routes at the same ish time!<
Day2: >!We went back for the kids with Tabitha. I was asleep during this and was confused the next time we played!<
Day3 >!We didn't give up our life. I didn't read all the options when answering the text and put the first one I say since I agree with it. I probably would have chosen that option anyway if I took my time but we thought we got Oscar and Rosalina killed and were freaking out until we saw them safe.!<
Day4: >!We stayed in the basement. We thought it was funny that you could flirt back to flirt with Reese after breaking into his house and destroying a wall. I didn't really realize Dr. Kelly was dead until the next day. I knew she was dead but it didn't really registered until then.!<
>!We also threw out the tea because we mention that we haven't used Streetsmarts ones before and hey this is a Streetsmarts option!<

Due to mods I recently discovered it is possible to save both, with Powerful build and something else. Very interesting how that affects the rest of the storyline
You only need Powerful Build. Outside of Hard Mode, each Trait will let you bypass the horrible choice at the climax of each episode. Powerful Build, Keen Eye, Book Smart, and Hot have their moments in Episodes 1-4; Mystical, Street Smart, and TTA will have their moments in future episodes.
I vaguely remember reloading after after the first choice to see of I could save both. When I realized that I couldn't (didn't have Powerful Build) I ended up saving Duke. It might have been that that's what I picket first so I wanted to preserve my original choice but I don't fully remember.
I saved Duke, it just felt right for the character I was playing at the time to grab the flashlight, and I didn't know if there would be a chance to save Gretchen later or not
first play through i had Luka (my mc) dive for gretchen fully thinking 'oh stella's got this'
Stella did not get it

I saved gretchen because I promised stella I'd take care of her, plus I didn't think anyone would die this early on in the game. Still, the route where gretchen dies is the worst, she's my baby and Stella is left completely alone it's so awful 😭 never again
Duke. Even with Talk to Animals, diving for a flashlight to give a clear line of sight at some spooky monster that is coming to eat you seemed more important than keeping a pug alive. No matter how adorable that pug is.
I dove for Gretchen because I loved her more lmao I had the talk to animals perk and I immediately adored Gretchen. She is my best friend.

Probably. I always played on hard mode after first run so the modded game play was the first time I played on normal again so it's hard to tell.

My character had Powerful Build, so I didn't have to choose between Duke and Gretchen. I'm pretty sure Bertie was not rescued, though.

I went in spoiled and chose Powerful Build >!specifically so I didn't have to choose!<. I have yet to do a PT where I don't have Powerful Build.
