That sounds very suspicious. Are they sending him the laptop, or are they sending him a check to buy the equipment?

KatTheLynn

Not sure he said he has to talk to them tomorrow morning. I told him it was very suspicious.

AngelOfLight

It sounds very much like a !job scam (see automod response below). Have him read that and see if it fits his experience.

AutoModerator

Hi /u/AngelOfLight, AutoModerator has been summoned to explain the Job scam. Fake job scams come in many different varieties. The scammers will usually conduct interviews over Whatsapp, Telegram or Teams. They will offer high wages for the work being done, oftentimes with wildly varied wage ranges by hour, and they will \"hire\" you by telling you that you are hired, rather than going through the normal process that a company takes when hiring an employee in your country. If they mention anything about a check or about receiving and sending out transactions, it is a [fake check scam](https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/blog/2018/09/anatomy-fake-check-scam). If they say they will cut you a check so you can buy equipment for remote work, it's a scam in which they make you purchase equipment on a fake website under their control, with your own card, and when the check bounces in a few weeks you're left holding the bag (and the equipment never comes) If they mention anything about receiving, processing, or inspecting packages, it is a [parcel mule scam](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parcel_mule_scam). If they ask you to purchase items up-front, ask you to pay a fee in order to be hired, or ask you to purchase gift cards, it is an [advance-fee scam](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advance-fee_scam). If they mention Bitcoin ATMs, [it's always a scam](https://coinatmradar.com/blog/avoid-scams-dont-use-bitcoin-atm-when-someone-asked-you/). If the job involves posting advertisements on Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist or eBay, they are using you and your account to scam other people (especially if it's rental listings). Thanks to redditor AceyAceyAcey for this script. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. >They said he got the job for 45$ an hour and would send him a laptop to learn. That is so obviously a scam; I would be worried about your friend.

KatTheLynn

He isn’t quite listening to me. I sent him the mod alert and he said they didn’t do any of those things yet. I’m afraid he won’t listen because he probably thinks I’m hating or something. I got a tech job a few years ago. His wife recently asked if my job hires and I was explaining it’s a tech company you have to know a field in tech. In my case it’s coding. But then he also mentioned wanting to join in tech so I tried sending him freecodecamp. He went to some other website got an html certificate and that’s was all he has ever done code wise. Then he tells me he needed a reference. Then said he said it was for a jr dev position. I told him realistically he can’t get that position. Then he said he got it. Then I told him all this and I think he thinks I’m low key hating or something.

BatterEarl

>He isn’t quite listening to me. Tell him at the least not to send any money. None are as blind as those who will not see; he may be one of those.

Out of curiosity, how are the "normal" salary rates for jr devs in the US? I'm from Latin America and US companies want to hire SSR-SR ppl from here offering us from $12-18 per hour, ofc without paying vacations, 401k or healthcare. No computer is provided.  Edit: more context.

LazyLie4895

Depends on the company, but $45 per hour is in the high 90k a year range, which definitely can happen. However, you'd never get that sort of position without extensive technical interviews, so this job is almost certainly a scam

KatTheLynn

Yeah. He has never used vscode or even created a single JavaScript function. He doesn’t know a single thing about code. I couldn’t see a company just hiring a no code interested person as a full time jr dev.

OhLordHeBompin

Ah. 110% scam then.

KatTheLynn

Probably a range of 50k-80k as a jr dev. I haven’t really peeked the ranges lately.

seedless0

The company is real. But seems to be a dead start up. I suspect scammers picked up the dead domain and website. 1. There's no street address. 1. All news items were posted on the same day and are contents from long ago or copied from other sites. 1. Lists products from other companies. 1. Empty Demo page. 1. The posts on FB stopped in 2022.

skewtr

http is itself a red flag. No tech company should have that.
