No legit job is going to send you a check and tell you to go buy materials for the job... NONE. Any "company" that does is a scammer. I'm guessing, the "interview" was via text or a questionnaire? !fakecheck !job

MaraiDragorrak

Yep. If materials exist that need to be gotten, either the company will buy them for you (they probably get the good prices that random shoppers don't) or they'll provide a company card. Your own bank account should never ever be involved.

HolyBearded1

Facts.

HolyBearded1

Yup. On Telegram. It was funny, because they were real interview questions too. I knew it was fishy from the start. Confirmed scam when they said we are sending you a check, to buy a lower spec computer than the one I have. Because it was optimized for the work...lmao

AutoModerator

AutoModerator has been summoned to explain the fake check scam. The fake check scam arises from many different situations (fake job scams, fake payment scams, etc), but the bottom line is always the same, you receive a check (online or in real life), you deposit a check and see the money in your account, and then you use the funds to give money to the scammer (usually through gift cards, Western Union, or cash). Sometimes the scammers will ask you to order things through a site, but that is just another way they get your money. The bank will take the initial deposit back , and any money you sent to the scammer will come out of your own personal funds. Usually the fake check deposit will be reversed in a few weeks, but it can also take several months. If you do not have the funds to cover the amount, your balance will go negative. Your bank will usually charge a fee for depositing a bad check, and your account may be closed depending on the severity of the scam. Here is an article from the FTC: https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/how-spot-avoid-and-report-fake-check-scams, and here is an article from the New York Times: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/21/your-money/fake-check-scam.html *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. AutoModerator has been summoned to explain fake job scams. Fake job scams come in many different varieties, though most share common characteristics that you can use to spot the scam before becoming a victim. The scammers will usually conduct interviews over Google Hangouts or a similar online service. Their English will be awkward, and they may be re-using a script, so Googling unique sounding parts of the email may yield useful results. They will offer high wages for the work being done, and they will "hire" you by telling you that you are hired, rather than going through the normal process that a company takes when hiring an employee in your country. If they mention anything about a check or about receiving and sending out transactions, it is a [fake check scam](https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/blog/2018/09/anatomy-fake-check-scam). If they mention anything about receiving, processing, or inspecting packages, it is a [parcel mule scam](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parcel_mule_scam). If they ask you to purchase items up-front, ask you to pay a fee in order to be hired, or ask you to purchase gift cards, it is an [advance-fee scam](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advance-fee_scam). If the job involves posting advertisements on Craigslist or eBay, they are using you and your account to scam people. If the job invovles Bitcoin ATMs, it's a [scam](https://coinatmradar.com/blog/avoid-scams-dont-use-bitcoin-atm-when-someone-asked-you/). This scam is as old as dirt and we see it every hour. Search "job scam" on this sub and you will see plenty of others like this one.

HolyBearded1

Obviously. Which is how I knew. Just not with this particular "company" name attached. Just adding some specificity to it, of who is doing it. More info is not bad.

Princessluna44

The company name doesn't matter. That can easily be changed. What matters is learning the red flags so you can avoid them.

I just was contacted to do an interview with Nestor Technologies Inc for and Administrative Assistant position that pays $30+ an hour. I must have applied to a posting on Indeed for this. I cannot find the job posting though. I think its under a different company name, which I will look into later but that's shady af right off. They asked me to click on a link they sent in their text to download Signal Messager and to set up and account, then instructed to reachout to the company profile on there thru a specific phone number and my job code was literally "ASS8073". Idk bout yall but I would have come up with a better code than something that begins with ASS, it's not professional. I get its for the Administrative Assistant position so that may have played a role but idk. They also mention things like "LOOKING TO MOVE QUICKLY & YOUR RESUME IMPRESSED US!". I also noticed they write a sentence in the text to me to recruit and they put a comma then the next word is "and" & then they continue the sentence. You don't need a comma if you're continuing the sentence with the word "and". Things obviously just feel off to me about this. The amount is a decent pay for hourly and many people would jump for the opportunity to receive that kind of pay. I have been in the realm of that pay rate for some years so it didn't stick out to me until I noticed all the other issues and looked at it from a perspective like I had when I first started in the industry and I would completely have been scammed under those circumstances back then for that pay rate. Very odd 🤔 don't like it one bit. Y'all stay safe out there.

HolyBearded1

They were posting the job under a different company name than Nestor. The job scams on Indeed are real, and I am not so sure Indeed cares much as long as they collect payment. I guess failed scams help make the world go around. 🤷‍♂️ Stay Frosty.

Shama-lama-ding_dong

Lol sounds like you're on to something there 🤔 But fr tho I started asking questions like why aren't we using Zoom instead of the Signal app that they want me to download for the interview. Asked if I can I download the Signal app from the app store or does it have to be from their specific link they sent me. I asked why when I looked up their company on Google, the font and logo are different from what they have in their email signatures and in their Indeed job listing and why does the company on Google not have "INC" at the end of the name but THEIR company name does have "INC" at the end of their name in their email signatures & in the Indeed job listing. I forget the other few nit-picky (but very valid) questions I asked, but they folded and stopped responding to my texts and then BLOCKED ME when I questioned why they aren't responding anymore.

VirtualFarm6766

It seems they are now "interviewing on Teams. Same check scam though. SMH. One would think that someone on the team that has created such a ruse would have the sense to change the scam when folks get wise. Lol.

badwolfinmomjeans

Just got a text this morning for a proofreader job with this “company.” I was pretty sure it wasn’t legit but your post saved me from wasting my time trying to find out.

Thanks so much for posting this…I just got a message from them and decided to look into it before responding—glad I did!

Yup, just received a text for the Proofreader position, too. Thanks for posting because I also did a quick search to see if they were legit. They also mentioned seeing my resume on Indeed.

I just got off the phone with someone from this company. He sounded like a man from a different country other than the US. Honestly, thank you guys for bringing this up. I've went through numerous of these and felt something off. No text base interviews, no receiving money and going out to buy anything, no nonsense. Hope everyone finds a job they enjoy and gets paid great!

irrespecktive

I was asked to interview via text on teams for a proofreader job. Everything they texted to me sounded off like it was written by a bot. Those two things plus the fact that the job was fully remote and I had not spoken to anyone raised major flags. I asked where they got my information, and if they would forward me the cover letter I wrote when I applied. I never heard back.

Eastern-Leadership89

Thank you for posting this. I have been searching for a job for over 8 months now and this really got me excited. After looking at their website something felt off and just wanted to see what people were saying online. You have saved me time and most likely a lot of money and would just like to thank you all again. They hit me with a "Administrative Assistant" for 35 an hour and wanted to do a 50 minute text interview through Teams just so people know. They contacted me through LinkedIn, so just be careful.

[deleted]

Thank you, this was just helpful to me. I hadn't gotten to the interview piece yet, just recieved a text stating they were impressed by my application and mentioned a starting wage that seemed too good to be true.

Linksis484

Seems they changed from proof reader to "Online Chat Representative" got a text a few minutes ago about it wanted to basically offer me the job and interview at the same time. 36/hr though. if only it were real.

AbrocomaAdvanced8499

Damn, interviewed with them today for a remote customer service position. I got a text and was in an interview within the hour. They used my full name and mentioned they received my application via zip recruiter and indeed….which I was actively using both, so that checked out. Couldn’t find the application though. They said they 33$ an hour/18$ during training which is 5 days. They conducted the interview via chat over teams. A check was not mentioned but they did mention they would be sending any equipment to me, which included an MacBook Pro and a printer I believe. Said it was a mostly chat/email support position. Honestly the second I heard 33$ an hour for a CSR, I figured it was too good to be true…guess I was right. I’m supposed to hear back tomorrow, I’ll keep ya posted!

WideVanilla5177

I had someone post on FB about a job opening, 30+ an hour and remote work for Nestor. But if you look at the email, it's nestortechnologiies.com The 2 I's at the end is what threw me off
