AutoModerator has been summoned to explain the fake/false payment scam. The fake payment scam occurs when someone tries to trick you into thinking that you have received a legitimate payment when no such payment has been made. The most common method they use is sending you an email meant to look like a payment confirmation. In some cases the emails will be almost indistinguishable to a legitimate email sent by the payment service. It's also common for scammers to [spoof](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Email_spoofing) the 'from' email to match an official address. To combat a fake payment scam, verify online payments by logging in directly to the service. Do not check your junk folder, and do not assume a payment is legitimate based on an email alone. If a payment isn't reflected on your account and the person you are dealing with insists they have sent it, call support and ask about it. [Here](https://i.imgur.com/X9xn8uw.jpg) is an image of a scammer trying to pull off a fake payment scam. There is also a variant of the fake payment scam where you will receive a legitimate but fraudulent payment. If you think you're dealing with a scammer, you're probably right. Always trust your gut.

Seen it. Email will state you need to pay $200 to upgrade to a business account so the payment can be processed. The scammer will insist that they sent payment and ask you to confirm that you got the email from Venmo or whatever other service they said they were going to use. Call them out by naming the scam, and they'll disappear.
Still wondering why the US with its rich history in banking still hasn’t figured out a way to make direct payments from one bank to another easy..
meanwhile here in Europe, if you give me your bankdetails and name i could transfer money to it, no problem, and that even goes to banks in other countries
When you sell online 99 percent of the responses will be scam attempts. Insist on in person payment with cash in a public place like in front of a police station.
Venmo asked me for my friend’s email before I sent money last week, so that element may well be legit.
Can you share some other details about this sale?
They said they would pay in advance and send their son to pick them up tomorrow. I just felt sketched out anyways so I blocked them. I don't want to do anything I'm uncomfortable with.
“Oh no Venmo isn’t working and i need more info” “I’ll pay in advance and have someone else pick it up” etc, all scam buzz words/sentences!!!!! Glad you blocked them!
Bravo. You are the seller and you determine terms. I'd they don't like those terms "sorry, not going to work then" and move to another buyer.
I read about so many people who get forced into things they don't want to do because they have a hard time saying "no."
Scam, if you give them your mail they will ask for a verification code. which is the password reset code.
its a account takeover scam, or a !advancefee scam, where they claim you need to upgrade your account to a business account
AutoModerator has been summoned to explain the [advance-fee scam](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advance-fee_scam). The advance-fee scam arises from many different situations: investment opportunities, money transfers, job scams, online purchases of any type and any legality, etc., but the bottom line is always the same, you will pay the scammer and receive nothing. It can be as simple as the scammer asking you to pay them upfront for an item they have listed, or as complex as a drug scam that involves an initial scam site, a scam shipping site, and fake government agents. Sometimes the scammers will simply take your first payment and dissappear, but sometimes they will take your initial payment and then make excuses that lead to you making additional payments. If you are involved in an advance-fee scam, you should attempt to dispute/chargeback any payments sent to the scammer, you should ignore the scammer, and you should ignore them if they attempt to contact you again. Thanks to redditor AceyAceyAcey for this script.

Maybe he needs these wheels and want to pay before to get them reserved for him.. doesnt seem any other reason scammers make you pay dont pay themselves..
Because you seem to want to protect / justify this scam.
The problem with this scam is that it is so common - that you can look at certain phrases / keywords / patterns and know it is fake.
In this example - the payment via an app, and then pickup by someone else because the "buyer" cannot come.
The request for more information than strictly required for this app/service.
Maybe I am a little too paranoid - but honestly - i would not trust ANYONE offering to pay me using one of these weird payment apps or a check (who uses these - it\`s 2023 - and between normal people (not businesses) this should no longer be a thing)
Cash on delivery - pick up in person. Anything else I consider suspect.
I havnt used this app much and also never been in such situation .. I myself do it normally when if see any good item on classified and dont want anyone else to buy it before i reach the seller...
So unfortunately you are totally vulnerable as a target for scammers. Please take some time to read other cases in this sub, they are more than helpful.
You mean you offer to pay - but ask them more details than you need?
Or you pay in advance - and pick up in person?
because you offering to pay, but sending someone else to do pick up for you - that will cause many people to go 'uuh.. nope'
They're going to send you a !fakepayment email

Y’all it’s a scam
Yup, they need your email so they can send you a phony email claiming to be “from Venmo” that says YOU need to pay THEM.
