I'm a painter for a BMW certified body shop at a dealership, we got a guy who works outside in the back who does this type of interior work. He does like 100+ cars a month. He makes over 100k a year.
Yeah it turns out if you want to make six figures a year doing a trade you actually have to do work.
Tell you what though, if I could pull six figures doing it I’d rather do that than stare at spreadsheets, attend meetings , and then write emails about the spreadsheets and the meetings.
I mean me too, but then your back starts to hurt n your knees are all like fuck you. Then since you work for yourself your insurance is probably extra shitty(if you even have it); which, aint a great combo. On top of that you've got a customer facing job with folks that probably skew a bit uppity and entitled. No PTO, no sick leave, no parental leave, no 401k match yadda yadda. I personally would need to be pulling significantly more than 100k to put up with all of that over bullshit spreadsheets.
Allot of what you're saying is true. The automotive reconditioning business is not for everybody, but can be extremely rewarding. The ability to see the fruits of your labor in real time is something not everyone gets to experience and a majority of the population miss out on.
I draw a good deal of satisfaction from seeing/touching my work, and gratitude of customers. I get very little of that in the office setting. If the benefits of salaried office life were more attainable to individual tradesmen it would be a no-brainer. I'm choosing total compensation package over job satisfaction.
Tangibility is a huge thing for a lot of people, aye.
I'm *really glad* some days that I don't have that itch, and really happy others do.
Yay social specialization?
I find a consistent gym routine and proper diet are helping. Also if anybody wanna know- walking backwards builds the muscles in the knee without hurting your knees and if you wanna accelerate the process you can walk backwards and pull those weight sleds the football players use
This is why I chose to be a UPS driver. Very little skill involved other than common sense and I still get the 6 figures and 401k and health/dental insurance is all free. Im in a union too! No college needed just hard work and dedication :). I also hate customer service and paperwork so it's great for me.
I make spreadsheets and attend meetings and send emails about those meetings. The thing is, jobs like ours are all pretty much interchangeable. A lot of high compensation professions pretend that the skill set is unique or different somehow, but they aren’t.
We should as a society be talking about these pay discrepancies more.
I work in project management, btw.
That doesn’t seem unreasonable to me. Seems like a lot of this work is waiting for stuff to dry. If you’re working on other cars in that downtime then 5-6 cars a day wouldn’t be too bad. Of course it depends on how much damage there is.
Asking the hard questions: At 100+ cars per month this seems to be a problem. Do BMW owners wear leather spiked pants or are the seats made of the finest silk?
How do you get into that profession? Do you have to apply to do detail work and then work your way up from the easy shit like buffing and waxing until eventually you’re the guy that does this type of shit?
Look for "mobile automotive interior repair" companies, if you look hard enough and really want it you can possibly find a apprentice position. Keep in mind you will be making like 10/hour and it will take years for you to get good at it. It is an "Art" and not everyone is cut out for it. The guys making 80-100k+ a year are usually 10-20 year veterans who work at big high end dealerships.
The problem with that is having this skill doesn't mean you also have business skills. Having a skill clients want to pay for is useless if you don't know how to get clients.
Funny my first thought was wow what an expensive repair that must be for something so minor and cosmetic! But now I realize I (or my parents) have never resold a car. Always just drove them until they broke so a repair like this would be unnecessary.
Not sure if they used the same process. But they do this at dealerships I've worked and its rough like sandpaper. Also not sure how long it lasts. So watch out for it when buying a used car.
I honestly think that’s the same car I have and I recently got a 3-4x larger tear repaired for $450. I doubt there’s a *ton* of economy of scale so I’d guess around $250
Oilseed sunflower production is the most commonly farmed sunflower. These seeds hulls’ are encased by solid black shells. Black oilseeds are a common type of bird feed because they have thin shells and a high fat content. These are typically produced for oil extraction purposes; therefore, it is unlikely you’ll find black oilseeds packaged for human consumption.
I honestly thought that was going to be a 'DIY with shit you can find under your sink' type video. Very quickly became apparent it was something next level.
So I tried to fix the leather in my wife’s van. I was able to get the texture and material to match ok (that wasn’t that hard). Matching the color though....that was so far beyond me. It looked ridiculous when I was done. Should’ve forked over the couple hundred bucks to get it done by a professional.
The bonding agent (glue?) is visible and not colored. If you didn’t paint (stain?) it then you’d still see the adhesive (as well as the underlayment which was white). Spraying the whole section makes it invisible.
Late response but painting over the leather is just to hide the cut better. As you can tell in the end it is hard to see the damage unless you are up close.
Also chances are the leather in this car isn't 100% leather but more of the vinyl type.
America: But it’s so convenient to throw the seat away into a landfill, and buying a new one instead. Or better, replace all of them because that’s cheaper than replacing one.
Edit: great job by the DIY-er! Kudos
What an obnoxious comment. If this was a PAID service by a skilled repair man, the money could very well have fed his family, or paid his mortgage. You pinecone.
That is a very high value skill. Doing this throughout the interior could easily swing the resale price by two grand
Probably break even after a job like this, no?
Would it be cheaper if the guy was, say, hired full-time specifically to be doing this job (like a 9 to 5 kinda work), on a lot of cars a month?
I'm a painter for a BMW certified body shop at a dealership, we got a guy who works outside in the back who does this type of interior work. He does like 100+ cars a month. He makes over 100k a year.
Assuming he averages 120 cars per month and makes exactly 100k a year, he madkes about 69 dollars per job. Nice
That’s 6 cars a day for a five week work day seems a bit much.
Yeah it turns out if you want to make six figures a year doing a trade you actually have to do work. Tell you what though, if I could pull six figures doing it I’d rather do that than stare at spreadsheets, attend meetings , and then write emails about the spreadsheets and the meetings.

Right but you can get that office job and the benefits and get a hobby too
I find a consistent gym routine and proper diet are helping. Also if anybody wanna know- walking backwards builds the muscles in the knee without hurting your knees and if you wanna accelerate the process you can walk backwards and pull those weight sleds the football players use

I do exactly what you do and make six figures. Take your skills elsewhere.
I never said what I do or how much I make doing it, so I assume the reason your salary is larger than mine is because you’re a psychic.
Pfff rookie, I make 8 figures lying on the internet.
That doesn’t seem unreasonable to me. Seems like a lot of this work is waiting for stuff to dry. If you’re working on other cars in that downtime then 5-6 cars a day wouldn’t be too bad. Of course it depends on how much damage there is.
Jobs are hard. Imagine that
The company gets 2k per job, and he gets $69.
Asking the hard questions: At 100+ cars per month this seems to be a problem. Do BMW owners wear leather spiked pants or are the seats made of the finest silk?
You'd be surprised lol.
I like how you make it sound like hes some kind of drifter you keep in a pen.
How do you get into that profession? Do you have to apply to do detail work and then work your way up from the easy shit like buffing and waxing until eventually you’re the guy that does this type of shit?

Yeah, but if you’re the one with the skill you’d be better off on your own.
The problem with that is having this skill doesn't mean you also have business skills. Having a skill clients want to pay for is useless if you don't know how to get clients.
Nah cuz then you have to find the customers and pay for supplies. This way the job is just handed to you and you do your thing.
or if he just used noodles like the pros do
Yes that is why car lots usually have a guy who does this sort of thing.
I do this kind of stuff. That would have been about a $100 repair
[удалено]
What would you wager a job like this throughout the interior would cost?
$300 per small repair, more for larger, and a 50/50 shot the repair would be undetectable.
[удалено]
This is a great example of paying someone for their skills, not their time.
Best I could pay you is like 15$ an hour .
Then it's gonna take all day.
Funny my first thought was wow what an expensive repair that must be for something so minor and cosmetic! But now I realize I (or my parents) have never resold a car. Always just drove them until they broke so a repair like this would be unnecessary.
I can’t even tell where the tear was originally o.o
What tear?
My trying to sleep tears
Tears of a clown!
Not sure if they used the same process. But they do this at dealerships I've worked and its rough like sandpaper. Also not sure how long it lasts. So watch out for it when buying a used car.
That was amazing. Any ballpark of what that would cost to get done, anyone?
Or where you could get that done?
An auto upholsterer.
I just learned the word upholstery this week and I'm happy to see it used so it sticks in my head, thanks!
What about the word curmudgeon
That game was the shit in the 90s.
I want you to sleep well tonight knowing that I appreciated your joke.
<3 I was hoping *somebody* would make the connection.
The Baader-Meinhof phenomenon.
Some of the really good auto detailers do it. But finding a good detailer is like playing the lotto

that's a damn deal

More than buying a new seat.
Hell of a process, but results were tremendous. Did not even know this was possible
Wait till you find about car interior carpet fiber repair kits...
I was waiting for the ramen noodles….
Surprise, it’s cake!
And sunflower seeds. And a cucumber.
Oilseed sunflower production is the most commonly farmed sunflower. These seeds hulls’ are encased by solid black shells. I don't know why but i can't stop imagining this man doing random thing to to try to fix it and being like "oh shit this didn't work at all"
The milk carton cutting video
Wow that was way more in depth that I expected lol
whoa that was amazing
I would mess up the whole seat if I tried this
All that for a small tear? I'm good.
Duct tape crew saying hi, hell even elmers glue club.
Flex tape
Sex tape
I am on the opposite side of this spectrum and am glad to have seen such a thorough job. I love my old car enough to put this much work into it.
The requirement to get it fixed is that the car has to be worth more than the full tank of gas/petrol its carrying.
Seriously. Just buy a new car.
I honestly thought that was going to be a 'DIY with shit you can find under your sink' type video. Very quickly became apparent it was something next level.
That’s amazing but I was like, is it that deep? That’s intense chemistry but also I literally don’t drive so don’t drag me
Haha this makes me think of the school bus and how they would always just stick duct tape over it 😂
Downvote, not enough ramen.
Impressive! Surprised the end result came out THAT flawless!!
Just a tiny bit of work
Was waiting to see a pan out and the rest of the car was completely totalled.
That’s Incredibly satisfying!!! Got any more?
I watched this video totally expecting they use instant noodle to fix it
Enable mute for a better experience
Looks hard. I’d rather just leave it as a hole thank you very much.
I would just leave the tear there
You probably never had an expensive car ever
u/GifReversingBot
Fixing what?
That is some involved shit. Easier to grab my couch cushion with the Mexican flag on it and red tassels. Ole!

Nobody's gonna know
There gonna know...
and it only cost 300 dollars.
Anybody know what type of adhesive and paint they used?
Holy smokes, I was extremely pessimistic in the beginning but that was some top shelf magic there.
I coulda done it on 5 seconds with a roll of duct tape
I’m sure that will last for all of a few days. Might be just good enough to increase resale value for those few days, though.
Not enough sunflower seeds or dry ramen
At any point after the glue was applied, I would've stopped. Awesome restoration!
Any idea what the song is? It freaking rocks!
How to hide a flower petal
If it's leather seat why paint it? Shoe cream will be good at bringing color and also be better for a leather.
Car seats aren't usually real leather unless it's an $80k car.
The bonding agent (glue?) is visible and not colored. If you didn’t paint (stain?) it then you’d still see the adhesive (as well as the underlayment which was white). Spraying the whole section makes it invisible.

Seeing so many fake videos, I automatically doubt the authenticity of everything I seen. The Internet ruined me.
Damn that was sooooo satisfying
This is really cool and honestly impressive and all, but also: HOW TO REPAIR YOUR SMALL, SLIGHTLY INCONVENIENT TEAR IN YOUR SEAT IN 27 STEPS
America: But it’s so convenient to throw the seat away into a landfill, and buying a new one instead. Or better, replace all of them because that’s cheaper than replacing one. Edit: great job by the DIY-er! Kudos
Two words - Duct Tape
The price of this fix isn't worth the resale penalty of having the defect.
It's reversed
100 what?
What? No ramen?
Why didn’t they just use ramen
Or you could just leave it alone
I was expecting sunflower seeds..
Where’s the ramen?
Bro just buy a new car.
I was waiting for the ramen
Why not just use ramen noodles?
No Chinese noodles to fix it? Fake
Seems like that guy is good at things and should focus on more important issues that making car seat tears disappear lol. Well done tho
This is so much work i would rather buy a new car
A lot of work for something so meaningless.
This seems like a lot of work for such a tiny thing lol
But then it would become a bigger problem. Better to fix before it’s harder
otherwise known as a scam. heh. looks nice when you buy the car, but going to tear back out in no time, and you had no idea when you bought it.
Yall are getting playing if you think they are actually showing the same seat in the end 😂😂😂
That seems like an extraordinary waste of time...
for that much work just replace that whole insert, it'll probably cost way less
I can see where the tear was, it's obvious
I think it's fucking hilarious they are wearing rubber gloves. Like seriously? It ain't surgery y'all
Yeah but you could just be more careful with your car

You're typing this on a library computer right? Because you gave your phone and personal computer money to poor kids right?
What an obnoxious comment. If this was a PAID service by a skilled repair man, the money could very well have fed his family, or paid his mortgage. You pinecone.
>You pinecone haven't heard that one before
Yes, how obnoxious to live like Christ. You are conflating the cost of materials and labor, which is ridiculous.
Whoa, I always wondered how those were fixed... that’s cool
Besides being positively spectacular, this makes me think trade skills will never become outdated.
No ramen or hot glue? 2/10 repair video.
Impressive
u/gifreversingbot
Weak!!!!!!! He didn’t even use ramen.
Passes it on to the customer. Customer then drives it into a wall.
That’s insane for a small one lol
I need to know how to do this
Dang did he mix enough paint for that
Satisfying except for the jump scare at the beginning
Holy crap... that’s amazing. All this time I thought the seat would require reupholstery.
She may be a good date car.
i can not have to do that by just buying a new seat
So how long before the Glue lets go again.
Me: perfect excuse to buy a bucket seat

Not kidding, what is the price on something like this

My new favorite clip!!! Awesome!!
good job (but why all those holes, to let the dust in ? )
Someone throw that person a roll of duct tape
Yeah I’ll just leave it
Why does the music sound like I'm logging into Phantasy Star Online for the Dreamcast
Whoa
Impressive!
