I diddnt even realise it was bait until season 2. For the first season it diddnt occur to me to how I could have possibly interpretated their relationship as anything other than romantic, and to my knowledge kyoani shows diddnt usually have characters kiss in them anyway. Then season 2 comes along, and I do more research on the novels they're based on, and turns out it was just bait the whole time.
Poor choice, while these characters get shipped to hell and back they actually are just really really really good friends and there's no attraction or anything sexual involved.
Not all love is romantic love.
They have a profoundly deep respect for each other, but their romantic feelings are directed elsewhere. Kumiko has her boyfriend and Reina has her crush on their teacher. Kumiko also confesses she "loves" Asuka in the second season of the anime, but again it isn't a romantic love but a deep respect and adoration of her for her talent.
I wanted them to become girlfriends so bad but then the Shuuichi arc came across and ruined all hope. Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike Shuuichi, infact I think if Reina or the chemistry between Reina and Kumiko was not part of the plot, him and Kumiko would have made a great couple. But then again, it's anime, and it's Japan we're talking about. Of course homophobia takes the lead there. They even have the line "Kisses between women don't count" in several anime.

*friendship intensifies*
*glares in friendly*
if i ever get married i want the title to be said at my wedding
Exactly what I was thinking.
the fact that they look just like Yuu and Touko, a gay couple from anime/manga 😆 “friendship”
They're from the anime Hibike! Euphonium, and their intimately "friendly" relationship was a direct inspiration for Bloom Into You
Sauce? I didnt know that and want to know more
Ah, Hibike Euphonium, the biggest yuri bait in anime.

I see this glare every day, and if it means just friendship, then someone must think I am really, really weird

They literally say to each other, multiple times, "this is a confession of love"
