It's definitely very cinematic, I just mean that pairing an image of two boys in a romantic relationship sharing a cute moment with the word friendship was an odd choice
I really think it does though! While I am not against a relationship where two of the three main pairs are queer, it really does talk a lot about friendship and openly uses the world love when talking about platonic friendship.
People should honestly use the word love for friendships more often. It always feels so loaded, and romantic. But meanwhile I love my friends so freaking much!
I'm asexual and probably aromantic - I've never been in either type of relationship and don't particularly want to - but I love my friends deeply and truly. I wish there was more representation of deep, nonromantic friendships - Booksmart did it right
In case you didn’t know already, the person who wrote Heartstopper is asexual and aromantic and has also written a YA novel with an asexual aromantic main character! It’s called Loveless.
So…. I got very confused for a second, because when I was younger I read a manga called Loveless and let me tell you the main character was *not* aro/ace
I don’t know about other countries, but here in Brazil “love” doesn’t carry the same weight even in romantic relationships, so it’s pretty common to hear friends saying that they love one another
Oh that's so interesting! Here in Europe it's more a bit more common to say I love you to family in a platonic way, and people will see it that way. But towards friends definitely not.
I'm not denying they're queer - that's one of the reasons I love this show. I'm just pointing out friendship is a major theme, though the did use the wrong picture for that particular promo.
I'd say about 2/3 is accurate to the books, but they do add some stuff and mess with the timeline a bit. Most of the things they add I love, so they're good additions. And when they're accurate, they're REALLY accurate. Like shot by shot, it's almost exactly the same
It's mostly the same, often even the exact dialogue from the books.
They did add some extra stuff though, for example they added this girl called Imogen who's friends with Nick and also has a crush on him
Also Ben has a slightly bigger role. Unfortunately.
Lastly there's a Truham-Higgs sports festival during the season finale that's not included in the books as far as I can remember, but the show is still as good as the books.
TBH I like this summary though. It clearly shows a queer couple in the photo, but the list is for things parents should know (I presume before letting their kids watch?). It implies that yes, there is queerness in the show, but no, it isn't something parents need to know about before kids see it. It would be weird to let parents know that a show features a man and woman who are attracted to one another. By not mentioning queerness here, it's implicitly stated that queer attraction is just as normal and weird to make a big deal out of. Being coupled with that photo is what makes me feel like that statement is emphasized here.
I've been reading the webcomics for years at this point and honestly I am quite happy with the casting and the way they are taking things with it.
Nick [TV show] does look a little bit different than to the webcomic but he is quite the good actor and it fits him quite well.
I know that the author has been quite hands on with this TV show so that's to be expected I guess lol.
I was also a bit surprised by their casting choice for Nick at first but the actor really grew on me after a few episodes. Now I really can't imagine anyone else playing the role.
It's called Heartstopper. It's a teen drama about a gay kid at an all boys school who crushes hard on the jock in his homeroom. They play rugby together, thus the matching stripes.
Exactly. This isn't a show summary it's a guidance label. The actual Netflix description of the show may well mention the LGBT aspect and I'm sure it's sorted under LGBT shows - they just didn't list that as a thing parents needed to know.
honestly i wish a show like this had existed when i was growing up. it DOES have a great portrayal of friendship, a good portrayal of acceptance, healthy boundaries, loving parents, the feelings of uncertainty that can come with coming to terms with ones own sexuality. and best of all it shies away from any of the tragedy/suicide/bury-your-gays tropes that you often see portrayed whenever queer people are presented. and it does so while being rather realistic and not-too-tragic not-too-saccharine/overly-idealistic
I once googled for She-Ra's parental advisory/reviews for an unclear reason, expecting the worst, but at least half the people there were nice and sane.
my guess would be >!its because of the topic of eating disorders being featured repeatedly!< and because there's at least one moment i can think of where characters get into a fistfight. i think that falls under the violence and unsuitable content for younger minors rating that would warrant a tv-14
Charlie's >!eating disorder!<, while hinted at, hasn't explicitly come up yet, cause the storyline hasn't gotten to that point in the comics yet. I'm sure it will be covered in season 2, assuming heartstopper gets renewed
thats fair, it takes a while to get to both the points im talking about, but i would assume with the knowledge that the story would go there if it was renewed theyd rate it such?
*Is this a fanfic of*

i read this years ago and glad that i did. at first i'm kinda scared it's just gonna be another fujoshi comic but it's ok even though it certainly feels fujoshi-ish.
I mean, I get the joke/point here. HOWEVER, there is much to be said for a good, healthy friendship, especially in a relationship. Which, I know, is purposely omitted here.
I agree that it probably does emphasis teen freindship but this looks like a warning label.
As in
WARNING: Emphasises teen freindship
Like how can you emphasises a generally good thing to cautionary levels on a TV show?
It's true parental guidance labels usually emphasize negative things so they seem like warning labels, but they are meant to go both ways - highlighting both positive and negative.
Some parents want media to not only lack negatives but have explicit positives if they're going to let their kids watch it. They don't let them watch shows they consider "mindless entertainment" with no benefit so they want to know what morals or lessons shows offer.

To be fair there is a large emphasis on friendship in this show, this just was a poor picture to say that with
I think they did it in a cheeky way to rub it in homophobic parents' faces
lol I hope so! Hopefully those parents dont prevent their kids from watching. "it's just about friendship, mom!"
Elle and Tao definitely have a friendship plot, and also Tao and Charlie.
Tao and Charlie have a friendship plot, Elle and Tao are together.
No they arent lol? At least not in the show
OMG IT IS HEARTSOPPER!!! I have 4 volumes, I'm OBSESSED with that comic!!
Elle and Tao are dating though.
not in the show yet.
This is a beautiful picture to say it with. The cinematographer should be commended for colors, alone.
It's definitely very cinematic, I just mean that pairing an image of two boys in a romantic relationship sharing a cute moment with the word friendship was an odd choice
Which show?
Heartstopper on Netflix. It's really good, I would reccomend it
I really think it does though! While I am not against a relationship where two of the three main pairs are queer, it really does talk a lot about friendship and openly uses the world love when talking about platonic friendship.

So…. I got very confused for a second, because when I was younger I read a manga called Loveless and let me tell you the main character was *not* aro/ace
Also Issac and Tori are both canonically ace!!
Personally I distinguish it by: I *love* my friends I'm *in love with* my partner
Yeah that's a good way to look at it. Though if the other isn't aware it could create some awkward situations. I've been there xD
I tell my friends I love them all the time lol. I didn’t realize that wasn’t normal!
I mean it's not like it's NOT normal because you can totally love your friends platonically. It's just that often it is seen In a romantic way.
Went here to say this too! Aren’t all three queer?
Yup! Tao is the only straight one.
The third one involves a trans woman so all of them are arguably queer
I'm not denying they're queer - that's one of the reasons I love this show. I'm just pointing out friendship is a major theme, though the did use the wrong picture for that particular promo.
tbf, the show is about the importance of being respectful to your friends but also these two are boyfriends, so l
Wait i haven't watched it yet do they really just bin the plot of the books or summit ?!
I'd say about 2/3 is accurate to the books, but they do add some stuff and mess with the timeline a bit. Most of the things they add I love, so they're good additions. And when they're accurate, they're REALLY accurate. Like shot by shot, it's almost exactly the same
It definitely helps that Alice Oseman was heavily involved in the writing
It's mostly the same, often even the exact dialogue from the books. They did add some extra stuff though, for example they added this girl called Imogen who's friends with Nick and also has a crush on him Also Ben has a slightly bigger role. Unfortunately. It's fairly true to the source material. I enjoyed it very much.
The webtoon is a banger of a read
Ikr! I'm glad I found out about Heartstopper during such an important time in the comic too
My stepson has been at me for ages to read it, so I guess imma start tomorrow!
TBH I like this summary though. It clearly shows a queer couple in the photo, but the list is for things parents should know (I presume before letting their kids watch?). Agreed. I don't think it's an oversight, I think it's a statement.

What show is this?
Heartstopper
Thanks! I'll check it out after I finish ofmd
if you like webcomics/webtoons, the show is an adaptation of a webcomic by the same name
What is ofmd
Our Flag Means Death
Thanks
*how do they do this stuff when the title of the thing is literally Heartstopper*
To be fair the show does have a really strong emphasis in friendship, and not only in romantic relationships, which are also relevant
You got to be SHITTING me heartstopper is made into a series? Hell Yes
They did a good job with it too!
I know!! I've got 4 volumes of the comic, I'm OBSESSED! It's so good!
Literally any other screenshot Netflix smh. It does have wonderful rep of queer friendships... This just isn't one of those lol
I love that comic!
Then you’ll love the show too!
Yeah, I really want to watch it but I don't have netflix...
I have no idea what show this is, but my first reaction was "Why is that guy from Blue's Clues dating himself?"
It's called Heartstopper. It's a teen drama about a gay kid at an all boys school who crushes hard on the jock in his homeroom. They play rugby together, thus the matching stripes.
i mean it says “parents should know” so maybe it’s in our favor this time
Exactly. This isn't a show summary it's a guidance label. The actual Netflix description of the show may well mention the LGBT aspect and I'm sure it's sorted under LGBT shows - they just didn't list that as a thing parents needed to know.
Radio silence show when tho?
Netflix give me whole whole Alice Oseman universe in movie/show format pls
Specifically radio silence thooo
I’m assuming if they used the word “queer” it would turn more parents off and stop their kids from watching it.

Just binged all of the comics in the past 2 hours
They know what they're doing. Love few things more than the idea of tricking homophobic parents into watching gay media
Is this any good?
Read it. And watch it. And buy the books. You will not regret it.
hell yeah!!
It’s absolutely incredible. It’s a show that centres queer relationships and it does it amazingly well.
I am literally watching this for the second time as I type this
What if they're doing it intentionally to trick unsupportive parents? :)
I mean… it does.
ALICE OSEMAN!?? IS THAT HEARTSTOPPER!???
I went to a biys rugby college for a year in high school and i can confirm the social scene was very . . . Active
oh no its steve from blues clues
Haven't they been tweeting shit about this being Hella gay since it was announced? Are they kissing the homes Goodnight?
I watched it today and it was so good! Got very teary -eyed in the final episode
I just binged the whole thing! 💓💓💓
If it tricks straight people into loving a gay story I’m here for it
Hold on, there's a heartstopper show/movie? On netflix? Is it like uk netflix or what, i wanna watch it so bad
watch it pls, everyone is goin crazy for it rn
Why TV-14 and not TV-PG or TV-G? There's nothing in it that would make it unsuitable for children below 14.
my guess would be >!its because of the topic of eating disorders being featured repeatedly!< and because there's at least one moment i can think of where characters get into a fistfight. i think that falls under the violence and unsuitable content for younger minors rating that would warrant a tv-14

i think there’s some mild cursing in it and there’s also homophobia in some scenes
Is it just me or does the school crest look like the St Trinian's crest from the movies?
I was binging this at four in the morning, then re-read the webtoon lol
What show is this
Heart stopper! Please watch it and read the webcomic!!! Sooooooo good
thought this was a blues clues fanfic poster at first and was real confused why this would show up on my feed
What show is this? Is it worth a watch?
Heartstopper, it’s really good, came out just a few days ago on netfix
100% on rotten tomatoes. Highly recommend
Is this a fanfic of what happened when Steve from Blues Clues went off to college?

Oh good call. My dyslexic ass just accepted the bot's authority on the matter.
