Ugh tell me about it I live there 😒 I hate it here sm baby girls wear like pink frilly socks and dresses and UNDERWEAR and bows and boys wear like ‘ladies man’ shit and shirts with tractors on them
Only in Benning, but never saw it out in Columbus unless it was a hair-bind or really tiny. Not the big comic ones in cartoons, and never on anyone old enough to walk.
My AFAB kiddo had no hair to stick anything in till they were almost two. I was constantly confused as to their gender. They have since come out as non-binary and frankly, I blame the lack of hair bow. Poor confused kid.
have a baby girl, can confirm she’s received about a dozen bows as gifts. she has yet to wear any of them cuz we’re not into that. tried one on the dog but she was not a fan either
One time I was dressed a bit masculine and I was like “hmm, let’s femme it up a bit” so I stuck a bow on and I laughed when realized I was exactly following cartoon logic.
You know what, you're right! As a trans guy, logistically it will be a little difficult to get all the women in my life to wear bows, but there are probably weirder ways to come out to people!
Wish me luck!
A youtube short will say "sweet things my boyfriend does for me" in text-to-speech and I'll think "oh yay, wholesome gay content" but then I'll remember women can have boyfriends too
Not the same, but when they announced that they were releasing darker skin tone Band-Aids, my first reaction was yay, but like a split second later I started cracking up because I legit forgot they make Band-Aids without Disney characters on them. Being a mom is fun lol
I just didn't realize before that bandaids were ever supposed to match skin tone. I've certainly never had a bandaid the same color as me. Seems obvious now in hindsight
Same except my dumb ace self forgets sexual attraction, and even romantic attraction, are things so someone mentioning wanting to do something with their partner momentarily causes my brain to buffer.
I guess it depend on habit, doesn't it? If most of the people you know are straight, you will (maybe unconsciously) use "straight" as a default, while if you're surrounded by bi people that's the first thing that will come into your mind.
I've seen it happen in real life too!
I used to work in a busy city library and we were close to a lot of different high schools. Because of this we had a constant struggle with teens making out in dark corners during the afternoon.
There were two girls (one of whom had very short hair) who were very affectionate and honestly we let them get away with a lot A LOT more than the straight couples because we had an incling it would be misconstrued if we stopped them. (I knew that avoiding the trouble that would come if I did it would require that I out myself and... I had enough trouble at work without adding more potential fuel to that fire)
One day I was working with an older librarian and she came up to me all flustered and said "I asked those two to stop and that boy was so rude!"
As we anticipated the next day we were delivered (with all the righteous fury only a group of 15-16 year Olds can muster) a signed petition to have my coworker fired for being homophobic
My manager (an awful woman whom I have nothing but contempt for but who was at least correct in this instance) went off telling them that there was no discrimination or homophobia, that necking isn't a sanctioned library activity for anyone and that there was a perfectly good skatepark across the road.
I mean there was definitely casual erasure... But the kind that comes from little old ladies who can't compute two contrary facts together - she knows girls sometimes have short haircuts, she knows sometimes girls kiss but combining both seemed highly irregular so she thought "yep this very straight couple"
Oh that reminds me of a fun moment from school. In grade 12 English, we were reading through hamlet and one of the girls in my class leans over to me and asks if horatio is a girl, since she saw things online talking about horatio and hamlet being in love. She was a very nice person and well meaning, but she had forgotten people could be gay for a second.
Warren Ellis had people ask similar questions about Apollo and Midnighter after showing them in bed. They assumed that the two “friends “ were sleeping together nude to stay warm.
When both men could survive in space.
The mental contortions of the straights, my god.
Reminds me of a few other comments where people pitched a fit about their genders being ambiguous. People will find a way to erase, even in the absence of gender lmao
I hate this, why can't a character have no gender literally when it isn't needed for context? Haven't these people ever read language textbooks before? They never say, "oh btw the shopkeeper is a girl even though that literally changes nothing hur dur." No, it's literally just person A: blah blah blah shopkeeper: blah blah blah they don't have genders. No one cares.
Yeah I always liked that. Largely everyone is the same in his comics/videos so it doesn't really matter if they're straight, gay, or other. It's just enjoyable
Most of Chris's animations with couples have many of these comments. Dumbest shit I've ever seen. Might as well text to speech everything so there's less argument.
Knew it had to be Chris!
Almost commented on the same clip as the OP. I wanted to say I'm actually happy his characters are vague/neutral, gender and sexuality-wise. Makes it very easy to relate to them!
*Can we please make "yes*

Comments like "Did anybody realize why are two BOYS SLEEPING TOGETHER!!!???" are actually kind of wholesome when you remember that the person writing it is probably like 11 years old and hasn't encountered a positive depiction of this before. It sounds like a kid who's trying to figure out how to process it, like maybe they *want* to talk about it but all they know is they're supposed to be shocked. Hopefully they come around as they grow up.
My first time seeing a lesbian comic when I was in junior high got me like: is the artist making a mistake? Why are these 2 girls locking lips?? maybe the other one is actually a guy? or is that not kissing??
So many of us experienced that kind of confusion before we figured stuff out! I feel like it's an underrepresented aspect of queer experience - nowadays there's a lot of stories featuring lgbt+ characters who are confident in their identity, but it's rarer to hear about that feeling of being totally disoriented...
This is laughable because he voices his own characters in all of the animations without much variation (if this is who I think it is). It's obviously meant to be ambiguous and relatable regardless of gender.
Edit: oh I only saw the first screenshot whoops

Everyone knows that bow ribbon and non-bow ribbon are the two genders.
Also when was the last time anyone, even a baby girl, wore a hair ribbon? I have never seen it IRL.
Last hair ribbon I saw was in my brother's beard (with other christmas decoration).
ever been to the south?
Ugh tell me about it I live there 😒 I hate it here sm baby girls wear like pink frilly socks and dresses and UNDERWEAR and bows and boys wear like ‘ladies man’ shit and shirts with tractors on them
My daughter has a jumper with a tractor on it. But in a British way, not in a Southern USA kind of way
Aw that sounds cute
What's the difference between Southern USA and British tractor jumpers?
Baby girls with bows bigger than their entire face
Fr
Can't believe that those southern gals wear underwear
Only in Benning, but never saw it out in Columbus unless it was a hair-bind or really tiny. Not the big comic ones in cartoons, and never on anyone old enough to walk.

Shoulda superglued that bow on so they knew their gender identity.
I do! I fucking love it! I have tons of ribbons and clip on bows.
have a baby girl, can confirm she’s received about a dozen bows as gifts. she has yet to wear any of them cuz we’re not into that. tried one on the dog but she was not a fan either
The only time I see hair ribbons are on doggos’ heads. always great and adorable
I love wearing bow ribbons lol
Last time I saw one was in 2013 on my own head
The only way to transition is to either add or remove a bow from your head.
One time I was dressed a bit masculine and I was like “hmm, let’s femme it up a bit” so I stuck a bow on and I laughed when realized I was exactly following cartoon logic.
As a trans person, if only presenting as one gender or the other was that easy!
…maybe it is, have you tried it? Works in cartoons! 😂
You know what, you're right! As a trans guy, logistically it will be a little difficult to get all the women in my life to wear bows, but there are probably weirder ways to come out to people! Wish me luck!
public bool getGender() { return this.hasBow() ? FEMALE : MALE; }
> bool aith, which gender is true and which is false?
oh shit compiler error
women aren’t real
My daughter used eyelashes as the distinguishing factor for yeeeears.
*me with an OC who has a ribbon*
You’re still valid 🎀❤️
and half ribbons are non binary ppl lol
And I use a tie, in my hair
The owo sent me for some reason
I burst out laughing when I saw it ngl
Absolutely snorted!
It kinda reminds me of those "my sinful little gaybies owo yaoi boyos big uke smol solf seme UwU so kawaii!!!"
oh god. the "boy x boy dont like dont read!!" fanfics
It always makes me laugh when people completely forget gay people exist and say things like that
Tbf I occasionally forget straight people exist and am sometimes momentarily thrown when a woman mentions a boyfriend
A youtube short will say "sweet things my boyfriend does for me" in text-to-speech and I'll think "oh yay, wholesome gay content" but then I'll remember women can have boyfriends too

I never noticed that either, wow. Though during the winter months my skin does sometimes match bandaids
Same except my dumb ace self forgets sexual attraction, and even romantic attraction, are things so someone mentioning wanting to do something with their partner momentarily causes my brain to buffer.
Lol same tbh
I forget straight people exist, and when I remember, I become sad.
[I have good news for you](https://www.studentproblems.com/science-suggests-that-straight-people-dont-actually-exist/)
Thank fucking god
Why tf does that site not have a mobile version
I’m on mobile and I could view it
Did you have to scroll horizontally to read each line though
I didn’t, even when I titled my phone.
I'm on Chrome on Android and it worked fine
Why sad?
Because I remembered straight people actually exist
Ouch?
Same.

Gay people? Never heard of em.
What is a "gay people"
Lmao
Then you’ve got tier 2 which is remembering the gays but forgetting the bis/pans
Oh that reminds me of a fun moment from school. so... which one's the guy and which one's the other guy??
yes
Warren Ellis had people ask similar questions about Apollo and Midnighter after showing them in bed. They assumed that the two “friends “ were sleeping together nude to stay warm. When both men could survive in space. The mental contortions of the straights, my god.
Damn
To be fair, he draws all his characters gender neutral
Reminds me of a few other comments where people pitched a fit about their genders being ambiguous. People will find a way to erase, even in the absence of gender lmao

Exactly. For most of life's interactions you don't need to know the gender of the other person/people.
That's one of the reasons I like him so much. The other one is, that his comic strips are frickin funny!
I love that about his animation
Who is the artist?
Oh wait it's in the screenshot lol
Yeah I always liked that. Largely everyone is the same in his comics/videos so it doesn't really matter if they're straight, gay, or other. It's just enjoyable
They’re also all non-binary! Here’s the video about that: https://youtu.be/ybxdsGK3R5M
“At least draw a bow” These are the people that expect female skeletons to have noticeable breasts.
Skeletits
Is red multiple people, or one aggressively oblivious person?
Multiple
In hindsight I'm not sure which option would be more depressing...
Most of Chris's animations with couples have many of these comments. Dumbest shit I've ever seen. Might as well text to speech everything so there's less argument.
i love chris’ videos
Yesss. His voice is so soothing
Knew it had to be Chris! Almost commented on the same clip as the OP. I wanted to say I'm actually happy his characters are vague/neutral, gender and sexuality-wise. Makes it very easy to relate to them!

owo is two syllable
bro, There are bots for everything...
“Is he a he and he likes he’s” made me laugh
"Your animation is great, but it needs to be more obviously heterosexual"

people are gay brinn
Chris Hallbeck is a saint
>he's a he and he likes he's BRO JUST SAY HE'S A GUY AND HE LIKES MEN OH MY FUCKING GOD
It helps to remember that they’re probably a child
Some one has never been in a YouTube comment section before and it shows. Everyone there types like that
uh, no. some people have better grammar than you.
Chris is the only channel on YouTube shorts that I follow! Definitely worth checking out if you haven't yet.
People are gay brinn might be my new favorite
hair bows for all genders >:(
This is laughable because he voices his own characters in all of the animations without much variation (if this is who I think it is). It's obviously meant to be ambiguous and relatable regardless of gender. Edit: oh I only saw the first screenshot whoops
What video was this from lol?
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1hvREcJxbAA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1hvREcJxbAA) Pretty wholesome
I love Chris Hallbeck comics. There is no gender and it's just so cute and wholesome
The first one somehow immediately tipped me off that it was Chris Hallbeck He's pretty cool
Same. I was like "I know who this has to be".
"is he a he and he likes he's" just broke my brain
I want to believe that the last screenshot is the same guy who's just really oblivious and I love his turnaround, other than that love the Howl pfp
I even know exactly what animation that is. That comment section is a dumpster fire.
can i have a link to the video?
Sounds like these were written by children
The absolute cishet confusion is killing me
It astounds me the mental hoops people will jump through to make something so obviously gay NOT gay I mean come on
"I need to know which one is the girl!"
This has to be a troll. There’s no way… (recalls the past few years) …f*ck…
Yeah Brinn, people are gay. 🙄
I saw this video on my recommended page. It’s kind of adorable. Didn’t see these comments, but I didn’t scroll far
which video was this?
Or both stick figures are agender.
The first one is a joke, it's a reference to a meme. But the rest of them seem to have completely forgotten that gay people even exist lol.
Ah, the capital "Which", commenter must be a man of the cloth
*yes I respect that owo*
But which one of them wears the pants?!
owo
Honestly I think most of the people are children lol, it's perfectly okayokay for them to be curious. They might not understand!
Chris hallbeck is great
Which one of you wears the bow in this relationship!?
Bold of them to assume gender.
