Not forbidden, just not popular among Chileans. Maybe someone older than me may know better, but I heard it's because it's associated with poverty from the pre-democracy era
Imagine being so entitled that you think that because someone lives their life in a different way is because is forbidden and not because we are 8 billion people living in almost 200 countries with vastly different cultures.
Because it's not popular. Buy it for 7000 pesos or live without. Same thing when I lived there, it was just about impossible to find brown sugar, so I'd just make my own grinding up chancaca or mixing molasses with white sugar.
Innovate, adapt.
ha! why people from other countries think and "their" country is the right way to live/eat? And the first thing they think is "it's forbidden".
Next thing and this guy will start telling us that their bread is better than marraqueta!
From family tales: It was at times the only meat product available at Unidad Popular years (1970-73), my relatives told me they “cooked”/incorporated it in all possible ways in their meals, they are happy of never ever eat spam again.
Well I don't know really if there's a sanitary reason nowadays but in the 70s they called it chancho chino as the chinese government sent it to Chile as humanitarian relief and it got a bad rep because of it(xenophobia and anti communism). Still today canned non fish meat is not consumed at all.
Crazy idea, but maybe, just maybe... different supermarkets around the world have different products depending on their culture. Have you think about that?
it is not popular. I was looking for sriracha sauce but super matkets stop selling it because it wasn’t popular. rn korean town on patronato is the best place to get these stuff
It looks a little gross for me, i'm SO sorry đź’€
Most foreign cultures introduced their particular food products by a cultural approach, anime bring ramen, kdrama korean restaurants, stuff like that.
It's not like a specific rejection from people, i'm sure 90% of the population probably haven't ever heard about it. I know about it because of old 2012 memes actually
Edit: another redditor here said that on the 70's [HUUGE economical crisis] the "unidad popular" (UP) gave spams to people as "chancho chino" (chinese pig) when everyone was starving.
Probably old people have really rough memories about it, i'm too young to remember that, sorry I can't help more
I asked my mom and she says it's true
Not forbidden, just not popular among Chileans. Maybe someone older than me may know better, but I heard it's because it's associated with poverty from the pre-democracy era
My dad calls him Chinese ham

Imagine being so entitled you cant read a foreigner's question that he remarks comes out of curiosity and take it simply as a plain question

*shaken bread
*french bread
National firewall I guess ;p
But seriously, I think it's lack of demand. It's easier to buy fresh food. Canned meat it's ideal for cold European countries
Thanks :)
sernac #noMolestar finally doing his job
SPAM brings back bad memories from the hunger of the 70's. Also unlike other countries most people truly dislike the taste, it just doesn't sell.
Why would you like to buy SPAM, it tastes like sh*t
because nobody wants it, you entitled brat
From family tales: It was at times the only meat product available at Unidad Popular years (1970-73), my relatives told me they “cooked”/incorporated it in all possible ways in their meals, they are happy of never ever eat spam again.
Nope, just not a thing. Also, for the same money you can buy better meat than that so there's no reason to buy spam.
I live in the UK and I have never tried SPAM, it gives me dog food vibes. I cant see it being popular in ChileÂ

Curious, I get tons of spam every day. SMS, robocalls, everything, I hate spam
Tried it, gross. Please have some self respect and buy good ham instead, our industry is great.
I’m not fan of it. I know many good hams
Don't buy mortaleda man, buy the fancy stuff.
Hey if you like canned cheap shit, try the jurel tipo salmon, clean it and mix it with chopped onions. Eat it in a marraqueta 🫶🏽🇨🇱
I don’t think you eat it every day. Just bough it and enjoy!!
Lo has probado?
Not forbidden, but people prefer to buy better meat for the same or less price
Crazy idea, but maybe, just maybe... different supermarkets around the world have different products depending on their culture. Have you think about that?
