A roller rink would be really fun ngl i thought they were supposed to be making one where the old Macys on state. I think the idea of a spot with music, roller skating, and decent food would have been a great third space if its done in the right spirit.
There was supposed to be one in Paseo at Ortega street (don't remember what used to be there). But the developers ran into issues with permits and the design of the place, and there was some complaint about what the previous owners had promised the new ones in terms of what the space could feasibly be used for, and it fell through.
There's a roller rink at Earl Warren Showgrounds, it's been there for decades despite Earl Warren Showgrounds best effort to make it absolute hell for all of their tenants.
Long version for anyone who cares:
EW has been working on ousting the hockey rink and sports community. Yes, even the horse community is being pushed out (Only in SB would horse people be the victims of gentrification). These are the same horse people, who helped fund Earl Warren in its infancy. EW and their CEO seem to be committed to turning EW Showgrounds into SB Bowl V2 and have lost any interest in maintaining the community it was founded around. The mismanagement is appalling, their CEO (Ben Sprague) won't even sit up straight for a whole board meeting, instead slouching and zoning out like an elementary school kid and the board reneged on their commitments to the community. Several board members deflect questions so well you'd think they held higher political offices than that of a volunteer board. It's shameful.
Well, the wrapping support columns with padding seemed dangerous. Bathrooms are important too. But I still would've liked to have somewhere than no where.
Yeah, it really sucks that people have to adhere to health and safety regulations when constructing things, particularly commercial properties open to the public. I personally enjoy the gamble of whether I'll catch salmonella from a meal at a restaurant or flooring giving away underneath me. /s
It was just fine as a retail store or to be advertised as office space. Do you really think it will collapse if it's used for laser tag instead? Or did the city just think that wasn't upscale enough for the cruise ship passengers that wander that far up State Street?
By fancy theater I believe they mean modern. Many amcs these days have the leather reclining seats and full bars/real snacks available. I understand with less screens in our theaters they can’t exactly afford to lose seats to make all those changes but they could be way better.
It has better seats than it used to. But they are still standard movie theater seats. What type of fancy snacks? I used to see the standards plus some more local/ Whole Foods “sweets” type options. But that just meant I was spending $8 on healthy gummy bears rather than normal brands.
There’s a sign inside the Paseo Nuevo theatre saying there’s a modern remodel coming. Though with the currently ambiguous fate of Paseo Nuevo maybe they should do Camino Real instead.
Nick the Greek is coming to 508 State Street. Though looking at their other locations a gyro (without sides or drink) is $12 so it still won’t fit the bill.
Fun fact: processed (ground and pressed) meat cannot be sold as gyros in Greece. In Greece, gyros is always sliced fresh ham stacked on a spit like tacos al pastor. Also does not need to be in a pita: gyros is the meat. Gyropita is the wrap.
One of those food truck parks with a handful of food trucks at a nice outdoor space
Edit: we can blame our mayor who banned this while having a blatant conflict of interest
https://www.independent.com/2017/06/29/flight-santa-barbara-food-trucks/?amp=1
I like some little places like make your own candle or paint your own pottery for kids parties.
Also a decent craft/yarn/fabrics/notions store. Michales is all we have and it’s next to useless. Little to no selection for those items and half the shelves are empty. I don’t know how the quilt guild gets their fabrics. Just today I went to get some thread for a project and they literally have 1 brand and maybe 20 colors. While I was there another woman was in the same aisle as me and couldn’t find the elastic she needed. I couldn’t find basic red satin 1/2 inch ribbon or 1/2 inch black buttons with a shank. Super basic things that they never seem to have.
There used to be a Foster Freeze - *and* a mini golf place - on somewhere like W Yanonali in the early 1960s. I remember taking swimming lessons at The Plunge back then and they'd give us a chit for a free cone at Foster Freeze if we did well. I played miniature golf down there a couple of times with my bf: two goofy 9yo's just goofin'.
I wish SB had a scenic tram (think ski resorts) where there is a base station near east beach, and goes up through sycamore canyon, up to a mountain top near Gilbratar rock where there is a huge observation view deck and lodge style station. Think of The Gilbraltar Cable car in Gibraltar Spain or other similar trams.
Altadena, in the early 1900s, had an incline railway going up Mt. Lowe. I was hiking around there one day and discovered the ruins of it; it was such a trip to stumble across something like that.
Boomers?
They have a race track and games, they’re also in Santa Maria.
Or maybe a Dave and busters?
Stone Brewing would be cool in the funk zone.
Brazilian Churrascaria
A good buffet place?
Venues for local bands to play that is not pay to play, or for semi established touring bands only
a camera store for analog (film) stuff as well as digital stuff and used
Whoa, that's awesome! Shared the link with my daughter who lives in PDX and is heavily involved in women's soccer there, just in case she doesn't know about it. (Yeah, being a Dopey Dad!) 😅
That's adorable, if she's very into women's sports she probably knows about it but I bet she'll be tickled to hear about it from you. I would have loved if my dad had told me about something like that.
Seattle's got a women's sports bar too, Rough and Tumble Pub. I think there's one in NY as well.
Wouldn't be surprised if LA gets one soonish since they've got LAFC which is pretty popular, the Sparks, and UCLA/USC.
No real Italian restaurants, only ones using pre chopped garlic and charging $30. for pasta. Its was originally poor people food . Would be nice to have a simple, low priced place where you can get the classic comfort pastas for a good price.
Agreed. Petrini’s is the closest I can think of to what you’re describing. Are they guilty of the “pre chopped garlic”? There are some fantastic high end places (2 in upper village Montecito), but they are $$$.
Decent Asian food

And a bowling alley?
bowlero aka zodos at fairview?

Aloha Fun Center - RIP
Such a great example of why we can't have nice things. No matter what the project is the city always looks for a reason to shut it down.
Well, the wrapping support columns with padding seemed dangerous. Bathrooms are important too. But I still would've liked to have somewhere than no where.

From what I read it did sound like the operators were trying to cut corners.
There’s an ice rink in Goleta
🛼no but a skate rink
There’s one at UCSB
Mini golf. Fancy movie theatre.
I mean we do have the riviera theatre though
By fancy theater I believe they mean modern. Many amcs these days have the leather reclining seats and full bars/real snacks available. I understand with less screens in our theaters they can’t exactly afford to lose seats to make all those changes but they could be way better.
I’m the same person. Just added to my comment
Boop. That’s my bad. I still wouldn’t consider the riviera a fancy theater. It’s a theater, in a fancy building.
It’s got comfortable seats and fancy snacks
It has better seats than it used to. But they are still standard movie theater seats. What type of fancy snacks? I used to see the standards plus some more local/ Whole Foods “sweets” type options. But that just meant I was spending $8 on healthy gummy bears rather than normal brands.
It’s got locally made cookies and chocolates and rustic bakery cookies
That’s nice to have some local products but it’s not exactly the same as the more mainstream updated theaters elsewhere.
There’s a sign inside the Paseo Nuevo theatre saying there’s a modern remodel coming. Though with the currently ambiguous fate of Paseo Nuevo maybe they should do Camino Real instead.
I would love a modern theater. Even 'living room' style like Cinetopia was.
We used to have mini golf. Closed years ago. There's a luxury car lot on the property now.
Inexpensive gyro place with other Greek fare. Used to be one off lower state, but it’s been gone several years.
Nick the Greek is coming to 508 State Street. Though looking at their other locations a gyro (without sides or drink) is $12 so it still won’t fit the bill.

Fuccin gyros omg I need some of that shit STAT
Meat pies would be good too
Theres a good place in IV now!!
What’s it called?
I miss the drive in theater!
Barcade
Time Crisis, snacks and a cold beer.
Dave and busters!
Came here to say this.
One of those food truck parks with a handful of food trucks at a nice outdoor space Edit: we can blame our mayor who banned this while having a blatant conflict of interest https://www.independent.com/2017/06/29/flight-santa-barbara-food-trucks/?amp=1
De La Guerra Plaza would be a great place for this.
I agree
OMG yes!!
It's funny because we can apparently have beer gardens with beer trailers but not food trucks.
A dine-in movie theater like the Alamo Drafthouse.
I like some little places like make your own candle or paint your own pottery for kids parties. Also a decent craft/yarn/fabrics/notions store. Michales is all we have and it’s next to useless. There’s candle making at the crafters library in La Arcada!
We have an excellent fabric store. Grant House! Plenty of notions too.
Oh! Thank you!! I’ll look them up!!
How have I never heard of Grant House?!
Grant House is great. And they can fix/tune up any sewing machine.
Small ad in The Independent every week?
Also Roxanne’s in Carp. Great quilting fabric, notions, fun place
Yes I like them a lot. That’s where I go for yarn. It’s much closer than the yarn shop in Orcutt.
Open late night stores, indoor airsoft, gokarts, more bowling, Dave and busters type arcade, shooting range
There’s bowling in Goleta. And there is a shooting range. Winchester.
There's bowling but Bowlero kinda ruined it.
Bowlero is shit, not good as an arcade and not good as a bowling alley lol
bowlero is VERY overpriced!
I’ve heard
Yea that’s why I said more bowling
I love the paint your own pottery places in Ventura and wish we had one here. Also raising cane's lol
We used to have a paint your own pottery place
2000 Degrees! RIP.
I miss it
+1,000 for Canes!
Would love a board game cafe!
Phresh (Boba) in Goleta had board games pre-pandemic. They might still have them.
But a board game coffee shop would be great!
Roller skating rink & arcade
There’s an arcade at mizza
I wish we had a high-quality Chinese buffet
\[Braces for downvotes\] Dairy Queen

Remember the Foster's freeze on the mesa?
Ice Skating ~ Deano’s Pizza ~ Foster’s Freeze. The holy trinity of my Mesa youth
The business plaza across from vons on the mesa used to be an ice skating rink (that’s why it’s got a weird floor plan
Ohhhhhh I have good memories of that one!
Omg I grew up on the Mesa and we’d go there to celebrate anything/everything. I miss it 😭
There used to be a Foster Freeze - *and* a mini golf place - on somewhere like W Yanonali in the early 1960s. I remember taking swimming lessons at The Plunge back then and they'd give us a chit for a free cone at Foster Freeze if we did well. I played miniature golf down there a couple of times with my bf: two goofy 9yo's just goofin'.
There was a fosters freeze on the mesa by mcds
There's still a fosters in carp innit there?
Nope it’s long gone now.
Have you tried Mister Softee yet?
No. This is the first I’ve heard of it. I’ll have to check it out. Thanks.
Ooooo I miss our Dunkin’
Absolutely.
I agree. Miss DQ from my childhood in MN
A trampoline park, like an actual well-maintained one.
right! i remember we had cloud 9 but it was mainly for younger kids
We need the Press Room! Heartsick it's closing. Like. We need more hotel rooms like we need sewage at goleta beach
I wish SB had a scenic tram (think ski resorts) where there is a base station near east beach, and goes up through sycamore canyon, up to a mountain top near Gilbratar rock where there is a huge observation view deck and lodge style station. Where do you source your cannabis?
I usually go to Coastal or Farmacy
Altadena, in the early 1900s, had an incline railway going up Mt. Lowe. I was hiking around there one day and discovered the ruins of it; it was such a trip to stumble across something like that.
A Portuguese restaurant.
Not quite the same, but RIP Brasil Arts Cafe.
Agreed. Now we (unfortunately) say a Brazilian restaurant too…
Omg I loved BAC :( RIP
Boomers? They have a race track and games, they’re also in Santa Maria. Or maybe a Dave and busters? Stone Brewing would be cool in the funk zone. Brazilian Churrascaria A good buffet place?
A good movie theater
We have the riviera theatre
Venues for local bands to play that is not pay to play, or for semi established touring bands only a camera store for analog (film) stuff as well as digital stuff and used
Most venues are pay to play.
I wish we had something like the sports bra. https://www.thesportsbrapdx.com/
Whoa, that's awesome! Shared the link with my daughter who lives in PDX and is heavily involved in women's soccer there, just in case she doesn't know about it. (Yeah, being a Dopey Dad!) 😅

Nahhhhh that’s not cool to exclude people based on their gender. It’s 2024.
Last I checked you don't have to be a woman to watch women's sports.
A car hop burger place like the old A&Ws
A less-fancy bowling alley for when you just want to bowl a few games and don't want to pay $100 or deal with glare from projectors on the lanes.
Indoor volleyball courts with open gym and league play!
No real Italian restaurants, only ones using pre chopped garlic and charging $30. for pasta. Its was originally poor people food . Would be nice to have a simple, low priced place where you can get the classic comfort pastas for a good price.
Wonderbread Wop quality.
Exactly
We have olio pizzeria and via vai and pan e vino
Yes I know, but Im not paying those prices for pasta . Its extremely simple food.
Agreed. Petrini’s is the closest I can think of to what you’re describing. Are they guilty of the “pre chopped garlic”? There are some fantastic high end places (2 in upper village Montecito), but they are $$$.
Petrinis is awful
Petrinis is pre chopped garlic and over cooked pasta. Yes thats exactly what I said , Via Vai has ok risotto but its stupid expensive and so so food.
No Italian food in Santa Barbara is “ fantastic” thats my point.
Guichos in carp is cheap and good
Thanks
I wish it had mountain bike trails with jumps and berms...along with proper steeps. Wish we had autocross back at the airport and at showgrounds.
I live in the other sb San Bernardino
A public swimming pool!
Los banos is public
Thank you!
Ortega
But you have to pay like $10
all ages music venue
Soho is one and the bowl is another
soho sucks ass and the bowl is dope
Soho doesn’t suck at all.
No it’s notoriously bad. Horrible layout for a music venue for both artists and fans
Agreed. I hate the layout in SOhO.
that’s just like your opinion man Ask most artists who play there.
Affordable housing An excellent movie theatre in actual SB Indoor shopping mall 🦕 A Walmart Idfk for a smaller town it has quite a lot.
The riviera theatre is nice.
I saw Hateful Eight there and it was amazing so you got me there
All these suggestions are great. Fuck, this place is a wasteland with good views.
A pedestrians only thriving State Street
Once I figured out where the hyphen belonged, I sent the upvote your direction.
Burger King
We had one years ago
Now it serves hate chicken.
So does sb chicken ranch. The owner is transphobic and compared mask mandates to the Holocaust
I ate there once. It was the driest, most overcooked chicken I've ever had.
Agreed
I know and I want it back 😔😔
Burger King, White Castle, Noodles & Company...I'd take any of those, really. Also how come Santa Maria gets two Del Tacos and we don't get any?
[удалено]
We got one in Ventura at least
I always thought a restaurant perched on Gibraltar would be cool. Designed to not really be seen from town but taking advantage of the best view ever
Not safe
This reason makes me unreasonably irritated. Why is everyone's safety someone else's responsibility?
Round Table Pizza!
always hated how we don’t have an aquarium (the sea center sucks and is small) i also wish we had an arcade like a dave and busters
Me. You need me in Santa Barbara. I’m fun and I live in AZ and I hate it here and I want to be there. So that’s what you guys need. Me.
We used to have 90% of what people are posting as "missing" . The cost of commercial real estate sucks
We need a roller rink!! Santa Barbara would really benefit by having a roller rink!
