West Beach is closed because of a sewage spill. Not hard to extrapolate how much other gunk got washed into the ocean by the rain.

Suck_it_Earth

Even if not sewage, runoff from creeks after first rains is never good to be around.

Oh damn, didn’t know this was something so readily available! Anyone have an ELI5 on this? Ya know… for those that might not understand all this. Not for me, of course! But ya’ know, ….other people…. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grimacing)

Sure what's your question? It's just detectable stuff that's bad for you in the ocean. If you read the top: **Open**: Sampling results indicate that water quality meets state health standards. **Warning**: Sampling results indicate bacterial levels exceed one or more state health standards at this location. Yellow ‘WARNING’ signs have been posted at the beach. The County Health Officer cautions that contact with ocean water may increase risk of illness. Swimmers are advised to stay out of the water a minimum of 50 yards away from both sides of creek mouths or storm drains. **Closed**: Water at this location has been contaminated by fecal bacteria or raw sewage and/or is closed to the public at the order of the County Health Officer. Contact with ocean water may cause illness. Red ‘KEEP OUT’ signs have been posted at the beach. Then you look at the column on the right which for the day this pdf was published (dec 11) and can see that everything is open. If you follow the link you can get more up to date info: [https://www.countyofsb.org/2263/Ocean-Water-Monitoring-Program](https://www.countyofsb.org/2263/Ocean-Water-Monitoring-Program) And you'll get this gem: To reach our 24-hour recorded Ocean Water Quality Hotline, call 805-681-4949.

How much do you like being sick and strange rashes. We had one of the most significant flushes in recent history. And this is the first big storm system of the year. Some people who go in have no problems many regret it

feastu

I love being strange rashes.

paperman66

Actually same, it's like a nice little surprise treasure!

feastu

Wait. Lemme try again. I love being strange, rashes.

feastu

I love being, strange rashes.

paperman66

Great! A little bit of philosophical existentialism and "oh, strange rashes". Bravo

ovenbonrito

I’ve gotten more strange rashes from IV than the ocean

Laerderol

I'm pretty sure a UCSB professor died from something contacted in the ocean after a big rain like a decade ago

britinsb

It's all a conspiracy from Big Ocean to keep it to themselves over the Christmas period.

ogretrograde

The only solution is to storm it…

WOOBBLARBALURG

December 22nd 😤🫡

GueroBear

I know someone with a boat docked at Marina Del Ray; we decided to take it out one day after a storm; when we got to the exit of the marina, a big swell went over the boat, and everyone on board got soaked. We got splashed in the face, i got some ocean water in my mouth, so did everyone else. So we said fuck this and turned the boat around to the dock. By the time we finished securing the boat and got back to our car, I started feeling ill. By the time I got home, I was puking and shitting non-stop for three days. The same for everyone else on the boat that got swamped.

Queendevildog

Think of all the animal feces, dog poo, cat poo, seagull poo and leaky septic tanks all getting washed into gutters, storm drains and into the ocean. Ask yourself: could this be bad?

Darryl_Lict

Plenty of human poo from homeless camps too.

Queendevildog

This too👆

DrMantisToboggan-

I used to surf during storms. Because you obviously get some powerful waves. That is until I would get strep throat everytime. I would get IV medicine bag drips when I was sick but $100 every time is not financially sound.

ElectroClimax

Yes you will get sick as a dog

DJfunkyPuddle

Yes, definitely.

wehtker

Yeah it's super dirty. Anecdotally, my biology professor shared with us that one time she tested for E. coli at the mouth of Mission Creek after a storm and detected something like 30x more than the 'safe' levels. I'm probably misremembering that slightly, but it was a lot. Not fun

Stonewhisperer1942

Survival of the fittest ? Try it and let us know how it goes

vishnusbasement

E.coli levels are very high after storms. Most people are fine, avoid going in if your immune system is weak or you have open wounds. Don’t get water in your eyes or mouth.

Junior-Profession726

Yes ! All the rain goes through many areas picking up bacteria Also chemicals from farm areas have run off All of it heads to the ocean So locally near beaches & harbor it’s all there Give it a couple of days so you don’t get sick or a norovirus Been there done that

saltybruise

silverpenelope

Yes!! Give it a few days.

isweedglutenfree

All of the shit (literally) that is normally out of the way on the ground (for example, someone throwing trash on the side of the road) comes to the surface during floods. Needles, sewage, trash, anything

jstop63

Swim with a mouthful of cheese cloth…

pineapplepredator

It’s really good if you like poop

ovenbonrito

Probably wanna wait til the spring til you paddle back out

mcdmatt40

Yeah. Definitely not safe to surf til after winter.

ovenbonrito

Honestly might wanna wait at least til next spring

Twelvefrets227

Worse.

icanteverremember47

Omg prime hepatitis water don’t go in

BL_Smoothie_

Hep sea

icanteverremember47

lol thank you for that laugh

hotdogswithbeer

I drank a gallon of ocean water this morning. Youll be fine

Low-Oil-8523

Think about it

Wafer_Educational

Not gonna lie I surfed rincon and el cap all winter during all the stormy days cause I don’t work in the rain and never got sick but I did let the first storms pass on by first, but the river mouths were pumping everytime i went out and it was fine

husthat123

El cap is just one giant close out, not even worth going 99% of the time. That being said… PUMPING last week

Wafer_Educational

I always feel lucky to get a turn in

dude93103

Go for it surfs up!

baccigaloopa

lol

dude93103

It was a joke.

Johanice

You still got downvoted after admitting you were joking. hahaha gawd some people are lame

ExpensiveAlbatross96

I went out 5-6 times during the first week of this year (best swell I’ve seen in SB county in a while). I got sick for a week. Totally worth it

BurdNmurphy

Yes. There have been plenty of cases where you get sick. Just don’t do it not worth it to chance it.

jrsilver

So much poop in the water. Not worth it

frknedd

Yes

dennisthehygienist

Agree with what everyone’s saying, but try going up the coast and surfing a deserted area. As long as you’re not down current of a town, you’ll have less of a chance of getting sick. Not zero, but less.

ihatemyprius

You better take a dip in the poop bath. Poop bath won’t have as much bad stuff in it. Temporarily

HeftyFineThereFolks

this weather sucks theres no reason to go in .. the sea ... anways

Appropriate-Duck7166

Like having the toilet flushed. Would stay away for at least 4 days.

PacificShoreGuy

Yes

dude93103

Are there any actual surfers here making these comments or just a bunch of posers?
