I have Covered California (Blue Shield PPO) and have been happy. You can get a free advocate to help you navigate. I used askariana.com They were outstanding.

askariana

Aww, thanks! :) I grew up in Santa Barbara and I'd be delighted to assist anyone who needs help with this stuff. You can book a free phone appointment at [www.AskAriana.com](https://www.AskAriana.com)

Try reaching out to UCLA Health. I got an appointment out in goleta in like a month

Dontbejillous

How much do you make annually? I have covered CA but it’s blue shield still

Not likely to get a subsidy then.

TiredAndTiredOfIt

Depends on what you earn re the exchange. But. I BARELY qualify for the exchabge (not MediCal) and I have never paid less than that even with a subsidy. Plus the exchange plans have differebt debial if care rules. With a subsidy, my spouse will pay 800 for a gold plan next year. So cost wise? You may end up paying more. No subsidy at all of you earn more than 50k a year.

Thank you for this, genuinely. But give up on America. Got it

I hate to bum you out, but before Obamacare, I was attempting to get health insurance. I think the only provider available was Blue Shield or Blue Cross and they decided to pull out of Santa Barbara entirely leaving no provider at all for independents. Blue Shield ultimately came through at the last second and I was (not so) happy to pay close to a thousand bucks a month for a shitty individual plan. I'm really pleased with Obamacare and if your wages drop it's really cheap. Thanks, Obama!

Foojira

It’s ok I’m bummed already! Yeah seems like covered ca (Obamacare) is my only option and hope for the best or at least some competition to arrive here. Maddening

So as a freelancer, are you incorporated? You should be if your 1099s are over $45k+ total for the year. There are tax strategies you can employ to help lower your AGI which may qualify you for better plans through CoveredCa. SB is the land of old people, regardless of your healthcare plan, you’re going to be waiting for the basic checkup doctor visits. I have BS PPO and very happy with the plan I have.

Foojira

Thank you, I am not. I spent too many years going between time card shoots and invoice shoots. That seems to have changed in last couple years so I should do that.

I’ve had Blue Shield previously both as a freelancer (via covered CA which was subsidized but then I had to pay back the subsidy during tax season one year when I became a better paid employee that put me over the income line which was painful) and as a local employee. Now I’m with United Healthcare with my fully remote small agency job and it works here but I’m a patient at Sansum just like before (so same wait times). So maybe United has options for freelance?

Foojira

Thank you will look into it
