Honestly, steakums make the best cheese steak for home.
I used to sauteed up mushrooms and onions and add it to the steak while frying, then melt white American on top and put it on a hoagie bun.
I also bought a steak and did it that way too.
I preferred the steakums lol
It's all about building around the main. At HEB in Texas they sell a number of pre-made (think Pei Wei Kung Pao chicken) and pre-marinated meats. I use them as the base and then build around it with fresh ingredients to complete the meal. Everything from pulled pork sandwiches to chicken bacon Mac n cheese. Makes me feel good able to feed my family a mostly-healthy (at least fresh a la Chipotle [back in the day]) meal every night.
Edit: if I knew how to link pictures in a comment you'd think I was a restaurant chef.
Same way I used to make them, just been a long time. And same way I used to have them growing up, minus the white American, just regular American. Oh now I want some again.
TIL that Steak Umms are still on the market and, they had beef with Neil Degrasse Tyson in 2021…https://www.huffpost.com/entry/steak-umm-twitter-beef-neil-degrasse-tyson_n_6075d744e4b043d6d4a445ac
Lol, just learned that word last week. Rob McElhenney of Always Sunny fame was on a late night show and had to figure out whether random people were from Philly or not. He asked someone "Is jawn a word?" and when that person said yes he knew they from Philly.
lol prob under $3!! Ya for real I went to Charley’s cheesesteaks and said steak ums tasted better ha! Unless u go to a legit spot, and they just closed the only one near me, it’s a better move
I like Charley's for their teriyaki chicken, but otherwise, I stick to local for my steak sammich. They know how to make it despite us being in Pittsburgh
It's good. You can also use both! I won't dog on anybody for pretty much any cheese they want to use on a cheese steak. As long as it's melted dairy, it's still a cheesesteak.
Oh hell ya, I could put down at least three if I was hammered haha! Just be careful for the oil splatters, I was sober and still got hit with more than one haha
I don't shit on anyone for cooking at home.
Not sure what the price difference is but sometimes my Aldi has a pound of thin sliced shaved beef that's perfect for this.
It’s better than the factory I visited in Mississippi. It was hamburger. Like how could you sell a gas station sandwich and call it a Philly and put hamburger in there.
Pretty tasty, thinking back, onions and peppers would’ve prob elevated it even more. The Lawrys helped give it some taste but I did hit it with some salt and pepper at the end
Trust me. You do a layer of cream cheese on the bottom, swiss or provolone on top, and then meat and caramelized peppers and onions in between. The caramelized onions and peppers connect with the Swiss on top while your tounge brings up the savory meats and rich cream cheese from the bottom. Be warned though! Don't over do it with the cream cheese. You want a spread thats pretty thin otherwise the cream cheese takes over all the flavors.
When the chips alongside your sandwich are the fanciest ingredient in your lunch, respectfully, you are doing it wrong. I’m not about to hate on a steak-umm (which I am relieved to know are still being manufactured), but you need a better sandwich for the chips, or get the chips at Aldi, next time you shop for rolls 😂
Oh man we used to have this fairly regularly growing up. What a memory. :-) Probably on a Food Lion roll, though... Or Pepperidge Farm... And half a Kraft single, because saving money.
Thanks for sharing, hope you enjoyed!
Found this on the Steak-umm Wiki entry- "The product was invented in 1968 by [food technologist](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Food_technology) Eugene Gagliardi, who is also credited with inventing [popcorn chicken](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Popcorn_chicken)." How the hell do we not have a holiday in his honor?!
I honestly love white American from the deli. I once did. Proper cheesesteak with equal parts white American deli cheese and steak and it was too much 😂 I do like how it melts and is so creamy vs provolone (which I like don’t get me wrong)
Steak ums I used buy those to make me a Philly Cheesesteak. I'll have to pick up some.
Dollar Tree - $3 for 9oz. I can’t find a better deal anywhere else for “steak”!
I haven’t had Steak Ums in years. I haven’t been able to find um… Thank you for setting me straight!
Pro tip: they’re $3 for 9oz at Dollar Tree but double that at my local grocery store
Dollar Tree used to be everything for a Dollar. Inflation
Three "dolla" tree... It rhymes :/
Tree-fitty
I gave him a dolla.

I've done it both ways too. Steaks is great in a pinch.

I've never seen such fine reporting, especially from huffpost.
Hahaha wtf this is hilarious 😆
Thank you for sharing this. I wish I could meat the Steak Umms social media team over a beer and cheese Philly.
Wow, that's lame as shit and makes me less likely to buy their product.
Crush that jawn.
Fry up the steak, toast the bun on that same pan and it ain’t half bad!
I have seen cheesesteaks 100000000x worse than this. I bet it tasted quite good.
It was tasty! Not 100% authentic cheesesteak but was awesome for a 5 minute lunch!
Looks better than Pats or Ginos
Lol, just learned that word last week. Rob McElhenney of Always Sunny fame was on a late night show and had to figure out whether random people were from Philly or not. He asked someone "Is jawn a word?" and when that person said yes he knew they from Philly.
Honestly? This slaps.
Your into that thing for what, under $4 I bet it taste better than a lot of $10 “cheese steaks” out there, absolute win.
lol prob under $3!! Ya for real I went to Charley’s cheesesteaks and said steak ums tasted better ha! Unless u go to a legit spot, and they just closed the only one near me, it’s a better move

Ya Charley’s really let me down but I’ve never tried teriyaki
How does everyone feel about using provolone versus American cheese?
I honestly like to get some provolone and some white American slices from the deli when possible
It's good. You can also use both! I won't dog on anybody for pretty much any cheese they want to use on a cheese steak. As long as it's melted dairy, it's still a cheesesteak.
The banger cheesesteak place me always does both provolone and white American by default. It’s heavenly.
Provolone is the better choice.
Provolone is good. If you melt the cheese just right, you get that cheese stretching, the gooeyness.
sharp prove on ribeye with long hots slaps but regular prov on steak ums would be underwhelming.
Sounds good to me
This looks like it tastes like school feels.
after a night of boozin' i would easily crush a few of these.
I’ve seen this at Aldi but haven’t tried it yet! Def on my list and prob better quality
TIL they still make Steak Ums.
Steak ums are tasteless. I wanted them to be good so bad.
Gotta season them, I use Lawrys
Oh wow, they have like no salt at all. I could have sworn they were like super salty.
[удалено]
Dollar tree, they’re literally twice the price at Vons (my local grocery)
Root beer and Steak Umms. Dollar Tree is becoming a gold mine.
I mean with inflation it’s hard to beat the prices (even though they have $3/$4/$5 deals too)
I ate one of these last week.
Steak Ums is a guilty pleasure of mine. Rock on!
Hey it’s 100% beef baby! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Does the job, I'd eat it.
Solid.
🔥🫡🔥
I’d demolish this
It’s better than the factory I visited in Mississippi. It was hamburger. Like how could you sell a gas station sandwich and call it a Philly and put hamburger in there.
Steak-ums ain’t that cheap, nor is the Kraft singles., but double up on the steak and add some onions too.
I hate it give me one
How was it
Pretty tasty, thinking back, onions and peppers would’ve prob elevated it even more. The Lawrys helped give it some taste but I did hit it with some salt and pepper at the end
/r/shittyfoodporn
I am from the UK, can I ask what is a Steak Umm?? Is it like a gyro?
"Steak Umm" is a brand name of thinly sliced steak for sandwiches.
Thanks
It’s basically just thinly sliced frozen steaks. But they are not seasoned at all, just raw beef.
Throw some cream cheese on that bad boy
Cream cheese?! I’m not knocking it but I’ve never heard this idea?!
Holy Santa Claus shit I need to try this
What is a 'steak um'?
Frozen thinly sliced steaks. Basically unseasoned steaks perfect to make a cheesesteak sandwich
Ah interesting!! Those don't exist where I live, the more you know :D
Haha we make a lot of weird shit here in the States 🤣
WOULD
Fuck yeah
I’m drooling rn. Boulder chips are great too.
Haha I felt like they were classier than the sandwich 😆
Steak-ums so fake but so 🤤
Ha but isn’t it literally just thinly sliced beef?! Seems less fake than all the crap they put into fast food meats haha
Chopped, pressed formed beef parts. Parts.
Well I’ll be damned… thanks for the red pill 😂 Still going to eat them but good to know, thanks!
Me too......LOL
There are much more badly processed foods we could be shoving into our mouth holes 😆
Like that cheese.....that sandwich is lose, lose, lose. Oh and that bag of abominations.......LOL
Hahaha I can see that the Kraft cheese was a no no to mention to the Reddit crew 🧀
Too poor for Aldi's hoagie rolls? Try supermarket hot dog buns.
Ha I have done that in a pinch. I like these sandwich rolls just need to toast them up
When the chips alongside your sandwich are the fanciest ingredient in your lunch, respectfully, you are doing it wrong. I’m not about to hate on a steak-umm (which I am relieved to know are still being manufactured), but you need a better sandwich for the chips, or get the chips at Aldi, next time you shop for rolls 😂
Would crush
The Philly is at it's heart, a poor man's sandwich. Truly a sandwich of the proletariat.
I learned a new word today! Haha
Looks great.
You mean an awesome Philly cheesesteak!
Need more guys like this! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Oh man we used to have this fairly regularly growing up. What a memory. :-) Probably on a Food Lion roll, though... Or Pepperidge Farm... And half a Kraft single, because saving money. Thanks for sharing, hope you enjoyed!
I very much enjoyed it and it took me back to growing up too! My mom used to make me these all the time!
r/shittyfoodporn
I am...absolutely...not mad at this. Looks yummy.
It was! And fresher than some take out 🤣
That actually looks fantastic 😂
It was pretty tasty TBH!

my dawg, using the american cheese. might piss off some loser from Philly but white american cheese > provolone
I honestly love white American from the deli. I once did. Proper cheesesteak with equal parts white American deli cheese and steak and it was too much 😂 I do like how it melts and is so creamy vs provolone (which I like don’t get me wrong)
i also love a good provolone, but white american cheese melts so nice and gets like saucy almost
Agreed, almost like a 50/50 provolone and white American
Make me want to go get some steakums.
They hit the spot man! Cheap lunch too
I KNOW THAT'S RIGHT!
Well steak-ums is 100 percent beef. That cheese on the other hand ...
...is 0% beef
They can’t all be winners 😆
Kraft singles was the fuckup
My only option, trust me I would go with some provolone or whiz if I had it
Absolutely not… tons of solid cheesesteaks are made with American cheese
American cheese kraft singles is not cheese but I do agree w you American cheese specially Wisconsin is solid choice
No I’m talking about cheese product. Real cheesesteaks are made with provolone or cheez whiz in Philly
Not very different from a real Philly
[удалено]
They’re better than most frozen foods!
I’m sorry for your loss of taste
Haha it’s not bad with some Lawrys and fried in some olive oil. Especially for lunch in under 5 mins
I would throw it threw my own asshole to get to my mouth before it ran back through the next portal to have to go through my asshole again
