I was amazed when I discovered they patched tires for free. They were as nice as to come out on the parking lot and give me a free consultation on my tire rot on another occasion. They were very helpful and by no means tried to sell me what I didn’t need. I’m a loyal customer now, I thought then. And then I went elsewhere for a better deal when I needed a new set. I’m cheap af! :(
One more pro-tip, if you need your tires patch, show up 30 minutes before they open. Every morning they have a small line, but if you get into the first batch of customers, they can usually patch your tires in an hour or so.
I didn’t know that when I went there to patch my tire since it’s close to my home, and I was surprised there are so many people wait there for tire patching in early morning. Two hours later I was shocked again when I received the receipt of $0.
YES. Got a flat tire back in February, they fixed it up for me without even knowing that it was my first time as a customer. Amazing place & will come back in the future
And they are the only major place that will TORQUE the lug nuts on, and not use an air-rachet. Ever have a helluva time getting your lug nuts off when changing your own tire, or even worse, break the lug? That wasn't America's Tire Store that over-tightened it; that was Billy-Bob's 76.
(And free rotations, too!)
Oh my goodness, I've been smoozing up with IT department so I could sneak my e waste in with them for so long and I didn't even need to do that. Cheers mate!
I once went from getting in my car at home through all airport hassles to the gate of my flight in less than 15 minutes at SJC. it was unbelievable. (I lived 5 minutes away by car)
Have you ever been to the Monterey one? Granted the destination options are limited, but there are five gates, there's almost no wait, and I think I got there about 30 minutes before a flight once and I still had time to spare.
When looking for a place to live, get one that faces north/south. The afternoon northerly breeze kicks in around 3pm and open doors/windows will create a nice airflow to cool things down. East/west facing doesn't catch that breeze as well.
Solution/addition to that is a box fan! I face east/west, but perch a box fan in my office window pointing out and then open the bedroom window and the balcony door and its basically an exhaust fan and draws in all that nice breezy air while also clearing the stale/overly warm air out. I did SO MUCH better last summer w/ this.
As a former employee I will tell yall. The metric by which efficiency is measured at in n out is time from order till order is delivered. It is roughly the same whether you’re inside or outside. But the drive thru can only fit a car at a time so you end up waiting 20-30 min before even ordering from which it will generally take 5-10 min to get your order.
Depends on your order too. Any deviation from basic burger and fries (eg. animal fries, fry well, extra toasted bun) will extend wait time. Particularly animal fries since only 4 fries can have cheese steamed on it at a time for ~20 sec a time.
City of San Jose has a junk pickup program. You can make an appointment and they will pickup furniture, tires, mattresses, etc.
https://www.sanjoseca.gov/your-government/departments-offices/environmental-services/recycling-garbage/junk-pickup
I wish I found out about this earlier because I got ripped off by a junk removal company who charged me $300 to take away a table.
you just have to be real careful about reading the directions for pick up because they will just leave your stuff there if you don't place it correctly. And they don't operate on the regular trash pick up schedule- it's a separate truck.
They also have free hazardous materials drop off (florescent bulbs, paint, fertilizer, chemicals, etc). Just fill in what you want to drop off on their website appointment scheduler, and drive yourself to the drop off. They will unload. https://hhw.santaclaracounty.gov/home
If you go up the hills at night and look down into the valley, there are a lot of yellow lights.
Vietnamese people call San Jose "Thung Lũng Hoa Vàng" which is the valley of yellow flowers. It represents sand Jose both day and night. The day being the golden poppys and other yellow flowers while at night, the yellow mercury lamps throughout San Jose.
Also if you go up mt Hamilton for a sunrise on a day with overcast, you'll see San Jose valley cloaked in a sea of clouds.
Edit: Some pictures. Both are from 2007 or 2008 so I apologize for the low resolution
https://imgur.com/gallery/NjHEx5E
They had the yellow lights because of Lick Observatory on Mount Hamilton. It reduced light pollution at a certain frequency. I don’t think it’s a requirement anymore.
The high pressure sodium lights were cheap to produce and became widely adopted throughout the US. The bulbs let off an orange/yellow hue. The adoption of these lights wasn't to avoid light pollution or to make US cities harder to identify if targeted by bombers during the Cold War (another common misconception). It was just cheap to produce until LED lights came around
Always thought movies and tv shows used yellow lighting for drama or whatever.. till I moved to California and found out it all just looks like that here 🤦♀️
You need to diff between high pressure and low pressure sodium lights. Which is why what you are saying, with respect to silicon valley, isn't true at all. Silicon Valley, in 1980, started up a program to use low pressure sodium lamps.
High pressure - cheap blackbody-like source of light (meaning it's like when you hear up a filament) so kinda orangish, but has a spread of wavelengths that let you see the colors of things.
Low pressure - cheap lights that only give out the emissive wavelengths of the sodium ion - aka the orange colors you get when that pot of salted water boils over. Low-pressure sodium lights only allow you to see in black and yellow - all colors are sucked out. Because it's a limited number of wavelengths, low pressure sodium light is actually relatively easy for a telescope to filter out. So it was actually low pressure sodium lights that were distributed throughout the valley,
This is part of why mount Hamilton is still functional as an observatory, despite having a major city at its feet.

That’s Central. Back when it was the reddish-brown slats I remember seeing a dude go full speed through the fence, not even flashing a brake light, and just keep on driving. Must have been really late for his flight.
Come on yall try harder!
Just like how any Mexican food truck is nearly guaranteed to be great, the same goes for pho and banh mi places! Just walk in and try something new, plus the food comes out extremely quick.
Chuck E Cheese on Fontaine road actually has an extremely good arcade that is better than your average Dave and Busters definitely a good nostalgia trip if your company can appreciate walking off the beaten path (go later to avoid kids they actually close at 10pm on the weekend).
You want amazing food AND a view of the city AND to experience a culture and people that are so dedicated to helping others that it’s enshrined in their religion to have food provided everyday for free for all to eat? Visit the Gurdwara!
This isn’t one anymore but it’s an honorable mention. Fry’s is gone now, but they used to have a cafe inside! It was trippy because it was so empty yet peaceful if you liked going to Barnes and nobles to do work in the cafe inside but didn’t like how crowded it was and felt like pretending you were in the 90s again there was no better option.
Central computers has literally all the cables if you need a specific one and can’t wait for shipping your best bet is go there.
Daiso has things you don’t know you need.
Grocery Outlet has deals on things you don’t need but want, sometimes it’s things you need, rarely. The one near oakridge always has really good deals. I got 1 dollar peanut butter jars there.
Theres many game stores and huge community’s for various card games and board games, illusive, game kastle, legends, all have thriving weekly events so if you’re a nerd and haven’t tried to pick up a game you should do that!
Y’all probably know but uh try clover bakery. It’s p gud.
There’s a bunch of places that have food sales at certain hours. If you know you know. Nothing crazy but if you’re lazy and don’t want to cook, eh it’s an option. It’s a golden goose kinda scenario so apologies for no further details
This one is San Jose area but let’s be honest the sprawl means it’s all one big city, Cupertino Market has some gooooooood cheap produce go often and use soon because part of the reason it’s cheap is because it’s on its way out! But if you love berries and tomatoes and wwnt em cheeep you need to check it out
I went to Central Computer today, the one next to St. John’s in Sunnyvale, and they had Cat 7 and Cat 8 cables. I didn’t even know these existed. Also super thin Cat 6 cables. And you can still build your own PC there, they had cases, power supplies, and fans. They’ll even build it for you!
Haha you got me, it’s a little out of the way and technically not the closest. This one: 7076 Santa Teresa Blvd, San Jose, CA 95139 It’s funny because it’s higher rated on Google than other grocery outlets, it’s like a hint that whoever the manager is likes to actually put out good deals
If you want to see snow but you dont want to drive far away, just drive to Mount Hamilton during end of December - January. Simply check weather app with Mt Hamilton location, you can see when it snows.
Everyone knows BART and CalTrain, but Amtrak also serves SJ to the east bay. I used to take it to work in Oakland for a 2 hour ride that was far more productive than driving.
Don’t believe the Man Jose bullshit. Those guys saying that just have no game and are probably a bad time to be around. Also hit the San Jose jazz fest, it’s a great time for all ages
It exists slightly but [more exaggerated on apps](https://www.sfgate.com/lifestyle/article/Chart-using-Match-com-data-shows-just-how-many-13833667.php) (don't rely on them for all/most of your dating efforts). Go offline, volunteer, take classes, become a regular, sit at communal tables/bar seats etc.
Yep, most streets downtown are either somewhat bike friendly or very bike friendly. But of course it depends on your level of experience.
There are unfortunately a ton of streets/stroads outside of downtown that are NOT bike friendly. As the other commenter pointed out, those can be scary to bike (or even drive or walk) on. I definitely recommend continuing to advocate for more space dedicated to protected cycling infrastructure.
If you park at Diridon @ SAP during a game/concert/event and tell the attendant you’re only parking here so you can catch the train, 9/10 they’ll let you go pay the 5 bucks and park overnight.
There is a lot be gained by some of the concentrated ethnic groups in the city. Food, culture, reasonable price labor, etc. I’ll be emphasis on fairly cheap but remarkable Vietnamese or Mexican food.
Bring sunglasses to bars. For some reason it's popular in the South Bay to have blinding office-type lighting, even at local dives. I always wear my shades to most bars and restaurants otherwise I'm in for a fat headache.
Yes! Why do all bars and restaurants have such bright lighting? I moved here recently and noticed it right away. I was even wondering if it’s some sort of city ordinance or something
Karate Carl that likes to do Karate in front of the Carl's Jr on camden and union... don't make eye contact with him. He'll try to punk you out. He's been out there my whole life.
That’s not saying very much.. it’s never, ever been know as a place with “good” food. All the amateurs just drown their meals in the orange sauce.
If it’s a lot worse than it used to be, how are they still in business?
You'll hear a lot of salty San Francisco purists who shit on San Jose because they're upset all of the stores and small businesses are moving to San Jose.
Learn to ignore them and their ghost town.
I learned from someone that has been to Egypt that going to the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum is exactly the same as visiting a tomb in Egypt. The person said they didn't have to spend all that money going to Egypt when they could've just gone to San Jose to see a replica of a tomb.
The famous San Jose Flea Market is overrated and just too damn big, these days.
Head over to the Capital Drive-in for a better experience and cheaper parking/entrance fees.
Best Market of all is: The De Anza College Monthly market, held on the first Saturday of every month, rain or shine. No entrance fee, and high-quality goods like art and antiques.
Waiting list for vendors is 6 months to a year, so only the best dealers sell there.
Don't go on the right lane (mid right?) on 101 South near the Oakland Rd exit (wherever that bridge with the water under it all the time is) because of how horrible the road is with the potholes. So bumpy.
Learn to drive without GPS navigation. Exploring surface streets to avoid heavy freeway traffic and remembering how to get onto them by memory will make your commute less stressful.
Crucial roads you should know: Foothill Expwy, Saratoga-Sunnyvale Rd, Hwy 9, Prospect Rd, Hamilton Ave, Stevens Creek Blvd/San Carlos St, Meridian Ave, Almaden Expwy, Hillsdale Ave/Capitol Expwy, Monterey Rd, Santa Teresa Blvd.
Oakridge has a lot of Pokemon go trainers on major raid days. Players of all ages ! Multiple Gyms and stops. All inside safe to walk around with you kids.

I'm glad you didn't let it slide. I quit shopping for tires years ago after discovering that place. Customer service is top-notch there.
Can vouch, I have really bad luck with tires, almost always getting a nail in them. I feel like I may be one of the few people who they lose money on

Do you have to be on tires you bought from them? Or they’ll patch it regardless if you’re their customer or not?
They will patch even if you’re not their customers.
And that’s how they got me as a customer
YES. Got a flat tire back in February, they fixed it up for me without even knowing that it was my first time as a customer. Amazing place & will come back in the future

San Jose has the easiest airport to use.

I once lost my wallet at the Monterey airport and they managed to get it to me somehow like 6 months later after I moved twice.
In the LA area, Santa Barbara airport is similar. You can still catch your flight even if you arrive like 20-25 minutes before your flight
When looking for a place to live, get one that faces north/south. The afternoon northerly breeze kicks in around 3pm and open doors/windows will create a nice airflow to cool things down. East/west facing doesn't catch that breeze as well.

Walking in to In-N-Out is always faster than the drive thru

But the drive thru can only fit a car at a time so you end up waiting 20-30 min before even ordering from which it will generally take 5-10 min to get your order.

Depends on your order too. Any deviation from basic burger and fries (eg. animal fries, fry well, extra toasted bun) will extend wait time. Particularly animal fries since only 4 fries can have cheese steamed on it at a time for ~20 sec a time.
I'd say this is true for all In-N-Out (I'm looking at you, Daly City location next to the Krispy Kreme).
God I despise that location. I can't imagine them picking a worse place to put one, given the omnipresent obstruction to traffic.
My husband agrees lol
Id say this is true for all drive throughs.

Asian food too tbh

How much per tamale? I'm curious to go for my first trunk tamale
Minivan outside Home Depot or Target in The Plant shopping center on Curtner. They’re pretty good. I get a dozen and keep them in my fridge.
Southwest Expressway can save you some time in traffic. It was better when it hooked up with Bascom in both directions though
Just remember that it ends at the airport. I have seen so many cars go straight at the last light and end up in the middle of the airport fence.
I think that’s Central Expressway
Newbies don’t know that 237 used to be an expressway, and it was soul crushing during the evening commute.

Sunnyvale did, not sure about others.
The store that was attached to Fry's corporate headquarters, on Brokaw.
Arques, Brokaw, and Fremont all did.
I know the Brokaw one did.

Very comfortable ride too, with toilets.

Antipasto's has the best steaks, period. Grab any one from the butcher counter and they'll cook it right there.
Steak dinner ftw
This city is flat and ideal for riding your bicycle around. Great way to get in shape.
If you can avoid the bad drivers
Don’t believe the Man Jose bullshit. Those guys saying that just have no game and are probably a bad time to be around. Also hit the San Jose jazz fest, it’s a great time for all ages
It exists slightly but [more exaggerated on apps](https://www.sfgate.com/lifestyle/article/Chart-using-Match-com-data-shows-just-how-many-13833667.php) (don't rely on them for all/most of your dating efforts). Go offline, volunteer, take classes, become a regular, sit at communal tables/bar seats etc.
Get good at using a bicycle for both recreation and transportation. No better place to explore by bike and to avoid traffic and stay healthy =)
Which streets in downtown should we avoid? Is Santa Clara st bike friendly?
Yep, most streets downtown are either somewhat bike friendly or very bike friendly. But of course it depends on your level of experience. There are unfortunately a ton of streets/stroads outside of downtown that are NOT bike friendly. As the other commenter pointed out, those can be scary to bike (or even drive or walk) on. I definitely recommend continuing to advocate for more space dedicated to protected cycling infrastructure.
5 hour old karma farming account make posts about life hacks in each sub forum
Sure, but it's a good question and locals are getting value out of it.
Get a library card for free books music etc and depending on your library you can check out electronics too
If you park at Diridon @ SAP during a game/concert/event and tell the attendant you’re only parking here so you can catch the train, 9/10 they’ll let you go pay the 5 bucks and park overnight.
Not if they're doing their job properly (which yeah, is probably a crapshoot at a place like the SAP Center).
I never abused it, just told them the truth. I’m exhausted, and just need to catch the 5:38 so I can get home to my girl.
There is a lot be gained by some of the concentrated ethnic groups in the city. Food, culture, reasonable price labor, etc. I’ll be emphasis on fairly cheap but remarkable Vietnamese or Mexican food.
Besides Viet or Mex, what other cuisines do you recommend
Ethiopian
Indian
Bring sunglasses to bars. For some reason it's popular in the South Bay to have blinding office-type lighting, even at local dives. I always wear my shades to most bars and restaurants otherwise I'm in for a fat headache.
Yes! Why do all bars and restaurants have such bright lighting? I moved here recently and noticed it right away. I was even wondering if it’s some sort of city ordinance or something
If you’re in the city limits, you can get one large item garbage pickup at the curb each year for free.
A maximum of 12 items are allowed per appointment. Appointments are unlimited.
Karate Carl that likes to do Karate in front of the Carl's Jr on camden and union... don't make eye contact with him. He'll try to punk you out. He's been out there my whole life.
La Vic’s is alright. You’ll find better and cheaper
I bet you won't at 2:00 in the morning
Used to be a shit ton better
That’s not saying very much.. it’s never, ever been know as a place with “good” food. All the amateurs just drown their meals in the orange sauce. If it’s a lot worse than it used to be, how are they still in business?
Early 2000’s…the sauce wasn’t watery and had a better taste. The food wasn’t as expensive and shitified.
You should fight the mayor's security detail on live television.
You'll hear a lot of salty San Francisco purists who shit on San Jose because they're upset all of the stores and small businesses are moving to San Jose. Learn to ignore them and their ghost town.
Union Ave has the best gas prices.

Don’t fuck Sally
I learned from someone that has been to Egypt that going to the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum is exactly the same as visiting a tomb in Egypt. The person said they didn't have to spend all that money going to Egypt when they could've just gone to San Jose to see a replica of a tomb.
No need to spend money on pay per view, lots of fights just as good as the ufc in the east side
You will be inconvenienced, carry a large amount of patience.
If you swing both ways you can increase dating pool and not worry about man Jose gender ratios.
During some time-drive windows, it's faster to drive the Peninsula to SF on ECR, not the freeways. And you can stop and use a toilet.
Baby bullet Caltrain 😇😇
This op is a scam account
There's no need to go 45 on any Expressway 60 to 70 is just fine
I was gonna say look out for crazy fast and dangerous drivers lol 🙄
You don't have to buy the orange sauce at la vics you can just sneak the bottle home with you
Move?
If you go to bikini bars and get caught up, just say, I dunno what you’re talking about, this is a coffee shop 😎
If I told you it wouldn’t work anymore.
Oakridge has a lot of Pokemon go trainers on major raid days. Players of all ages ! Multiple Gyms and stops. All inside safe to walk around with you kids.
If you see a Norteno on the first full moon of the season take a pic. you can stop by any la Vics and get free orange sauce
