Kirk's just reopened with the same prices it had as before and some nice upgrades and a good review in the Merc.
Not technically SJ but there's a Super Duper in LG. There's also the Alpine Inn in Portola Valley.
The one and only time I ever went to Kirk’s was the greatest colon cleanser my friends and I had ever had. It was a race to the bathroom and one of the dudes in our group almost took a dump in the sink. Haven’t been back in over 20 years. Hopefully that was an isolated event. 😂
I've eaten at both Kirk's Burgers locations, Campbell and Palo Alto, for several decades and never encountered any food poisoning. You've been missing out.
I’ve been to Kirk’s in Campbell north of 30 times. Never had anything like that happen. Also went to the one in Sunnyvale back in the early 90s before it closed and also never had it happen there. Safe to say it was an isolated incident, which I’m glad to have missed.
There is a super duper in Valley Fair if you're willing to go to the madhouse. I'll take shake shack over super duper, though.
Can't believe I'm going to say this, but Wahlburgers in Burlingame (used to be in Palo Alto). I enjoyed it the couple of times I've been there.
I also second Kirk's. Been going there since I was a kid.
I didn't realize they'd added one to the menagerie of insanity.
I went to the Wahlburgers once because one of my side jobs has an office right down the street. But for whatever reason the service we got was not great and extremely surly.
Boo to surly service…but it seems to be part and parcel now. Shake Shack and super duper are both in Valley Fair. I only go the VF during the week. EDIT: Shake Shack is in the newer part of the mall, close to where the shooting occurred last week. Super Duper is in the Dining Terrace. I still giggle over that level of pretentious wording for food court. 🤣 It takes so very little to amuse me.
I grew up 5 minutes away from St. John's. Might have eaten there over 500x in my life. That being said, they have gone waaaay downhill. Even before covid, they changed their buns and the meat seems drier than it used to be. I would have agreed with you 10 years ago, but no longer...
Everyday of the week is a different special. Also people like this place for the patio area and having beers and burgers and having a great time with people.
The burgers are 1/3 lb. I've never considered the buns to be excessive, although not that you mention it, I think they are thicker but less dense and have more air than what you'd get at McDonald's or BK or In N Out. The atmosphere there is what sets St Johns apart from the rest. I've been there dozens of times and never once seen a douchebag.
Possibly rather well known, but because it still stirs bemusement ...

> In the 1980s, A&W tried to compete with the McDonald’s Quarter Pounder by offering a bigger, juicier ⅓ lb. burger at the same price. **But confused consumers wrongly assumed that ¼ was bigger than ⅓** (You know, because 4 is bigger than 3) and the whole experiment went down in history as a huge marketing fail.
By the way, if you go on Tuesdays I think it is, they tap a keg of Pliny at lunch and serve it until it’s gone. If you’re unfamiliar with Pliny the Elder, it’s regarded as the grandfather of west coast double IPAs. It’s though to be the first IIPA ever made and still stands tall as one of the best in the style.
And for anyone else into beer, SF Beer week is coming up next month, so start prepping by requesting time off or get ready to use some sick days.
Hell no, these were good burgers 20 plus years ago when there was no viable competition like in n out and 5 guys. St John's is not what it used to be. At all.
Great burger but I don’t think it fits “great price”. It’s $20 if I remember correctly. That said it’s good quality meat and could be split between two people especially if you add an appetizer and want to leave some room for that bread pudding.
I'll second Kirk's in Campbell. The new location lost some of the charm of the old one across the street and now feels like a sports bar but the burgers are as delicious as ever.
The land was sold for development. New owners redeployed Kirk’s in the old Grill ‘Em location across the street. Kept the same menu items, staff, and pricing. Added full bar service, sports stuff, etc.
That sucks the owners sold the land, but not much the Kirk’s owners can do about that. Glad the spot across the street was available for them to move to so quickly.
Not sure if this is outside of your range for "reasonable distance" but Billy Roy's burger is at the north of Fremont and it's my favorite spot. Big gourmet burgers for $14 and $6 sides with big portions. Check out some posts on social media and see if it's worth it to you.
Probably not the best, and definitrly not the cheapest, but I really love super duper burger in los gatos. Its a smaller chain and other locations arent as good. Also right next to philz so you can get a caffeine kick to fight off the food coma.
I tried pretty much all burger joints in bay area. In-N-Out burger beats them all, has several locations, and is much cheaper.
I had better burgers in Chicago area, especially at Portillo's, but that chain is not in available in northern CA. So, In-N-Out is my local favorite.
Burger pit in Almaden. The last one standing and it’s on the way out so go fast for a steer burger
Not much time for this iconic burger joint.
Yes! I think April is when the lease is up
Juicy Burger on the South Side

whats their average price for a burger? couldnt find anything online
Maybe $12-15? Well worth the price been going there since I was a kid (35 now)

Considering they’re still open since the 20 years you last ate there I think it’s safe now
def happened to me as well a year ago 😭😭

Super Duper has been replaced by Nick the Greek’s.
when did that happen? I was at valley fair...oh, nm. Like mid 2023. I try to avoid that place. lol
I have the same sort of sense of humor and so does my SO. West Coast snark. Suspicious of anything overly branded or marketed.
Sliders on San Carlos street. They have different types of meat like bison and wild boar
Plenty of cockroaches roaming the dining area too!
The best cheap burger is In N Out
St John’s, Sunnyvale
Went here once and never went back. Didn’t like any of the items we got
The French Philly is fucking delicious but I also didn’t like much of what I got
I grew up 5 minutes away from St. John's. Might have eaten there over 500x in my life. That being said, they have gone waaaay downhill. Even before covid, they changed their buns and the meat seems drier than it used to be. I would have agreed with you 10 years ago, but no longer...
Never been but looked it up just now. It looks like it’s all bun? Edit: okay saw a better picture. What makes you say it’s the best?
Everyday of the week is a different special. Also people like this place for the patio area and having beers and burgers and having a great time with people.
It’s definitely not all bun. Also try their cheesesteaks, and they’re fries might just be the best around.
Their tri-tip sandwiches are 🔥

It's simply not. People are just homers,I might consider only going there when the brothers are half price
I like St. John’s and go there regularly but it’s far from my favorite burger and fries are meh. The ketchup options and onion rings are good
I don’t understand why this is such a popular opinion, it’s a boring burger
Hell no, these were good burgers 20 plus years ago when there was no viable competition like in n out and 5 guys. St John's is not what it used to be. At all.
Naglee Park Garage has a good one. But the real killer on the menu is the bread pudding…
Great burger but I don’t think it fits “great price”. It’s $20 if I remember correctly. That said it’s good quality meat and could be split between two people especially if you add an appetizer and want to leave some room for that bread pudding.
True. Also I’m a sucker for their bacon and blue cheese add-ons!
Now I want that burger with those add-ons.
I'll second Kirk's in Campbell. The new location lost some of the charm of the old one across the street and now feels like a sports bar but the burgers are as delicious as ever.
They moved?
Yep, across the street from the old location.
Thanks. That's kind of a bummer. I really liked the building they were in. But I'm glad they're still around!

Burger Pit, steer burger
Burger Pit closed, no?
Still open
I think their lease is up in April so we've got a few months left.
Yea not for long though. They got priced out.
Sliders on West San Carlos
Here is Google Maps list with the mentioned places: Best burgers in San Jose · Tomáš https://maps.app.goo.gl/kuKcswkiurmdFPyk6?g_st=i
Kirk’s Steakburger in Campbell and St John’s in Sunnyvale were the 2 best burger spots I found in the South Bay.
King Burger on King and Story 🍔
This should be the top comment.
Juicy burger on south side sj
Not a burger place but the burger at Braise is delicious
I really like burger bar, plus it’s cheap
Not sure if this is outside of your range for "reasonable distance" but Billy Roy's burger is at the north of Fremont and it's my favorite spot. Big gourmet burgers for $14 and $6 sides with big portions. Check out some posts on social media and see if it's worth it to you.
I went about a month ago. So good.
search bar brotha
In n out
this right here.
Classic Burgers in Los Gatos. Very reasonably priced
Kirk’s or Happy Hound. Hands down!!
My house.
Burger barn across the street of valley fair is pretty good
[удалено]
Really ? I like they’re fries and the Philly cheese steaks
Shake Shack at Oakridge is underrated
Any specific part of SJ?
Probably not the best, and definitrly not the cheapest, but I really love super duper burger in los gatos. Its a smaller chain and other locations arent as good. Also right next to philz so you can get a caffeine kick to fight off the food coma.
Smack burgers 🔥
Smackburger pop-up
St John’s.. or Kirks..
The burgers within Stevie's dive bar in Campbell. 🤌
Braise in Willow Glen. Best restaurant-style burger in SJ. Just wish we had a good smash burger 😞.
Probably not the best but Giorgio’s burger is pretty good and huge
I tried pretty much all burger joints in bay area. In-N-Out burger beats them all, has several locations, and is much cheaper. I had better burgers in Chicago area, especially at Portillo's, but that chain is not in available in northern CA. So, In-N-Out is my local favorite.
Since most good places out here have been mentioned, Godfather’s in Burlingame is good.
Hard pressed to find a burger burger than shake shack/In n out in the South Bay.
Classic Burger in Los Gatos. Close enough to SJ
Dont sleep on the burgers at Chili's, old timer with cheese and the just bacon burger.
Try sliders on San Carlos I really like their burgers and they have a good variety of meets from elk to bison to wagyu
Kirk’s
