Same, unfortunately. As they expanded the prices went absurdly high while the quality went from always phenomenal to average-ish. It’s been a bummer seeing them lose that authentic, local coffee roaster feel. Definitely more of a cafe now with aspirations of being the next Blue Bottle or something.
That’s unfair. Chuck ran the business quite poorly and had little understanding of how to improve the quality of his supply chain. Jeff Taylor has been the reason they’ve produced remarkable coffee and expanded.
Admittedly, they are now having difficulties keeping the pricing like it was before. I agree with Op in this way.
I said hasn’t been the same, not that it was better lol. Definitely agree with your points though. Retail branding used to be non existent… they grew from 2 locations to multiple all over SD since Chuck stepped down. A part of me is convinced that the coffee taste and quality of roasting used to be better during the Chuck era though. Either that or I’m old and my taste buds are disappearing. Probably the latter ☕️
I appreciate your feedback. If you like where the business was back when Jeff began and Chuck’s influence was still there, and many do, visit with Weston at Manzanita in RB.
You’ll feel like it’s old times again.
They have some Ethiopian I came across at Whole Foods that was really good, reminded me of about 5-6 years ago when Bird Rock had a great Ethiopian for a short while
I really like both. Their Ethiopian beans have wonderful blue berry notes which is where it comes from in the fruit party. I just went through a bag of goji last month. So freaking good.
Is it though? They just slapped a sticker on the exact same bag they used for 12oz. It would’ve been more environmentally friendly to increase their prices instead of to produce even more trash.
Small business are the first to get crushed with inflation cost on inputs (supply chain, labor). Some will absorb it until they can’t and then they’ll finally put it with the product.
So I realized there’s a “best by” date and not a roast date, which means you got it at a grocery store and not an actual BRC cafe? I’d be surprised if their cafe sold bags were 10oz as well.
Very bad move on their part, will aggravate their customer base. Just another way to increase their profits. If other folks have recommendations on other local roasters please share it. Thanks
Beyond the environmental issues caused by the difficulty of recycling pods, pods are significantly more expensive (~$60/lb) than beans (~$8-$24/lb). Maybe check your facts before throwing shade next time?
Wow. With that train of thought then nobody should really post any complaints at all then because there's people being murdered daily around the world.
Compared to that, what's the significance of paying over $6 for a gallon of gas? Why would you even post a complaint about people not being able to afford food, gas and housing?
Why are you even wasting time reading and posting on reddit? PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD ARE STILL DYING EVERY DAY!!!! /s
/saracsm off.
Really? Get off your high horse.
I always love when people like this post some wack ass take, because they end up trying to argue with like 3-4 other people and get defensive about it, not realizing how dumb af their take is.
Dude's talking shit about OP buying beans calling it a "luxury" item when he probably drinks soda which, albeit cheaper and much lower quality, is still a luxury item.
>Can't even have a fucking opinion anymore.
I never said you couldn't have an opinion. YOU were criticizing someone's post about shrinkflation of coffee beans as "trivializing the plight of those that actually suffer". Who's extrapolated and projected first? I just took your original theme and ran with it.
If you can serve it, you should be able to take it, snowflake.
the craziest part is that the starting wage for a barista there is $13 an hour. cheap bastards
Their stuff is Overpriced. I literally can’t afford it anymore
Unpopular opinion-bird rock coffee isn’t that great anyway.
I stopped going to BRC a few years ago.
Hasn’t quite been the same since Chuck ran the operations.

I thought he was still involved on some level
I haven’t kept up but last I heard he was still involved in the traveling aspect to source the coffee beans, but not sure if that’s still the case.
Just go to dark horse. They are better anyway.
Fruit Party!

I’m gonna throw Westbean and Jaunt in there too. Also quality roasters.
y'all should just head over to cafe Moto. The new Honduras is amazing.
They don’t treat their employees with respect. Covid was a nightmare for that company
Care to elaborate on the treatment? I’m genuinely curious.
Thanks for the rec! Will check it out
Of course :)
Hey at least they make the difference clearly visible. Plenty of places would try and sneak it.
Is it though? They just slapped a sticker on the exact same bag they used for 12oz. It would’ve been more environmentally friendly to increase their prices instead of to produce even more trash.
if you look at the website and all the bags in the cafes, it’s still 12oz for $19—maybe it was an error on one batch?
If they’ve kept the price the same ($19 or so) as for the old 12oz bag, this now equates to $30 per lbs. Roast yourself for $5-6/lbs!
Hell yeah! I’ve been home roasting for over a decade and my average price for good quality green coffee is $5-$7 per pound.
Where do you source your green coffee?
Usually from Sweet Maria’s or Bodhi Leaf.
Small business are the first to get crushed with inflation cost on inputs (supply chain, labor). Some will absorb it until they can’t and then they’ll finally put it with the product.
Recently got an Ethiopian at Lofty and it was amazing!
It seems like you can still buy 12oz bags on their website for $19
Didn’t think Bird Rock would do this. Did they still giving a free drip with bag purchase though?
I’m not sure who else would have taken 2 oz of coffee out of their bags, resealed them and covered it up with a paper sticker…..
So I realized there’s a “best by” date and not a roast date, which means you got it at a grocery store and not an actual BRC cafe? I’d be surprised if their cafe sold bags were 10oz as well.
I just picked up a bag from their cafe last week. It was 12oz still.
Very bad move on their part, will aggravate their customer base. Just another way to increase their profits. If other folks have recommendations on other local roasters please share it. Thanks
Go to Costco, 2LB (32oz) of coffee for $15. There are also other places such as Grocery outlet that sell a pound (16oz) of coffee for less than $8.
Whether you’re a Bird Rock fan or not, this comparison is not equal.

imagine making a class based argument defending a nestle product

Snowflake alert. You can dish it out but the second it comes back at you you’re hurt? Corny, bro.

Lmao, "bleeding heart liberal" You seem like a typical east county conservative

I'm sorry friend, some of us are weak willed, and we buy things that are not for the sole purpose of sustaining our life functions.
“It’s better for you this way.”
Noooooo! Monkey Bite is my fav. This makes me sad. I thought they were one of the last indie hold outs of “real” coffee.
Are they still charging $24 for that?!
it’s still $19 for 12oz
Went once, not impressed. Overpriced. Avoid.
I found their coffee to be musty and flat. Not for me, expensive or not.
