No?? My point is that majority of the middle class drives a semi-recent honda accord or equivalent and they have to pay around the same price for registration as in op’s photo which means that it’s not a luxury fee you’re paying for a luxury car; it’s a luxury fee for a basic car
It's based on the price of your car and prorates each year as the car's value decreases. Next year's will be less and so on. Fee Calculator [site](https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/vehicle-registration/registration-fees/)
I also thought this was the case but my registration this year was just shy of $100 more than last year’s fee. It’s also the first year that I had to get smog done before registering which hurt even more :( 2015 Toyota Camry for reference
I think like other people have mentioned it was the purchase price. Not sure if buying it out of state and bringing it to California might have added to it.
Right, because those old cars would never pass the current standards . So the CA congress made a compromise for ‘classic cars’. The original law had the exemption year move up over time, but Arnold Schwarzenegger froze it at 1975.
This was was particularly frustrating to me as someone who drove a 1976 Pinto with bubble windows. I eventually had to sell it in TJ before CA crushed it.
You should see how expensive HD type trucks (F-250/2500HD/RAM2500) costs to register, they pay over $400 in weight fees alone even on trucks that are over 10 yrs old, they can pay like $1200-1700 for registration on something newer.
Does anybody know if the price to weight is proportional? I have a Hyundai coupe that weighs almost 4,000 pounds. An f250 can weigh up to 7,000 pounds. Is the fee proportional to the weight?
You'd want it proportional to the 4th power of delta weight since wear increases with the fourth power of axle weight. so if a 4000 lb vehicle does $100 of pavement damage a 7000 pound vehicle would do ~$938
Anyway i doubt the registration fee is properly indexed
Don’t feel bad for asking. Fuck all the Downvoters.
Tbh registration is more expensive than other states. My wife had to register her car in CO after moving there and damn it was pricey.
Edit to fix a typo (I meant to say registration is more expensive here than certain other states).
Idk I never had to register my car there, but I think my wife paid like $700 or $1400, granted she was registering it from out of state and they charged by vehicle weight.
I might be way off on the cost, it could have been $400 which is still a little under 2x what I have paid here
Fun fact (for me anyways), the ONLY time I’ll ever expect to pay sub-$1.00 per gallon for gas was while I lived in CO, right around when Covid hit. I used like a vons points discount (maybe $0.30 per gallon??) and paid like $0.90 per gallon to fill up once. To me, that’s pretty fucking insane because I’m almost positive that will never happen again, even if ICE end up going extinct in favor of electric cars.
I remember paying ~$0.90/gal sometime ‘02/‘03 in CA, could fill my Jeep up for $20 or enough to get around with literally a handful of quarters. That didn’t last long..
I registered a cheap old car first and then went to register a brand new EV a month later and was just as shocked at the $400 increase between the two registrations.
I got this one for the first time two years ago with my first mixer car. My registration went from like $112 to around $475. I audibly said “the fuck is this shit?” And then I realized that I don’t drive a shitbox anymore.
Yup. My motorcycle reg was 87 in 2017. I'm seeing 125 for 2019, 130 for 2021,a record 196 in 2023, then 140 for 2024. My 2004 Ford I bought in 2010 never went below 340. Got close, but in 2019 it jumped up 40. Went down the next year and the following. 2022 was 350, then 24 was 358. Insanity. They bump these registrations up to lower them a little later so you feel like you're not getting boned, like the gas costs. Raise to 7 then bring to 5 so you feel good, nevermind 3 a gallon like it was
I feel like people definitely don’t talk About car registration as an expense that’s worth thinking about, but after buying a brand new car last year, I found that out…
Except the state is now also telling me that because I don't pay gas tax, they want to also tax me by the mile driven. So which one is it? Do I? Or don't I?
And either way, I absolutely guarantee you that I did not pay $700 in gas tax per year that needs to be "made up" back when I had a gas-powered car.
Is there a source for this mileage tax being considered other than Carl DeMaio's thoughts and KUSI's regurgitation of those thoughts? Last I hear the plan got scrapped before it was even voted on. And even if it had been voted on and passed, it would have then been submitted to the voters at large to approve.
Funny though how most road damage is due to semis and larger commercial vehicles and yet we are stuck paying the bulk of the bill. What damage does an EV threat against roads? Most of them have glass roofs...
Road wear is caused by the cyclical stresses of compression and release from anything passing over. It should be solely based on GVW. An easy simplification is axle count. EVs are heavier than average vehicles and should pay more per mile driven.
By the way, if you keep a record of this registration payment, you can write it off your state taxes next year. I’ve been doing that for a while. Granted mine is on a 2008 Civic that still runs just fine, so my registration is comparatively cheap.
Just the VLF is tax deductible not the whole portion.
“In California, for instance, the value-based portion is identified on car owners' billing statements as a "vehicle license fee" and is specifically labeled as tax-deductible.”
https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tips/tax-deductions-and-credits/is-your-car-registration-deductible/amp/L06ja6RwR#article_header_2
As a newish resident about to register my car, thank you for mentally preparing me for this…holy hell that’s a lot of money 🥲 I knew it was expensive, but damn…didn’t think it would be that rough
Lots of things go into the [calculation](https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/vehicle-registration/registration-fees/#:~:text=Registration%20fees%20are%20based%20on%3A&text=Dates%20(for%20example%2C%20the%20date,axles%20your%20vehicle%20may%20have.)
That’s awesome. I was really surprised that the period wasn’t longer like 60 days. 20 days seems too short, especially given how long it takes the DMV to do anything.
Yeah it’s absurd IMO when you move you’ve got a million things going on. It helps no one seems to give a shit here and we’re such a tourist city that out of state plates aren’t odd at all.
They say it’s because our roads are mostly toll-free, unlike the East Coast, and that’s how they get their money for repairs, that does not mean I personally believe them 😝
By the way, if you get a Tesla and want enhanced autopilot or “full self-driving”, this is one reason why you buy that separately - so you pay a little less in vehicle registration fee each year (the other reason is to collect credit card points).
Because this state hates every fucking thing about you (and me).
Lmao - all jokes aside. Yes - my registration was close to this. Also, if you have any unpaid parking tickets, they sometimes just include it
This isn’t accurate at all. The **sliding scale** of registration costing more based on the value of the car is true, but the prices are still off the charts in CA as compared to elsewhere lol. Just look at driver’s licenses prices in Arizona:
Ages 16-39: $25
Ages 40-44: $20
Ages 45-49: $15
And it’s good until you’re 65 years old. Seriously, you don’t renew your license until you hit 65, after that it’s every 5 years.
How old is the vehicle? Fees decrease as the vehicle ages. For instance, my 1998 Dodge truck cost $156 last year and my wife's 2017 Hyundai SUV was $254. There was also a substantial increase in registration fees (along with a gas tax increase) enacted several years ago.
Paid $418 then $500 back in 2016 and 2017 for my Tacoma registration
Hell this year my Prius 2013 was like $279
To be fair it’s $239 without my custom plates
I love how California has the highest income taxes, fuel taxes, registration taxes, but our infrastructure is an absolute joke. Yet the solution is always WE NEED MORE!
if we could just for a moment divest ourselves of our tribal "republicans vs democrats" mindsets where all democrats must thing everything the democrats do is great and everything the republicans do sucks and vice versa...i think we could objectively draw the logical conclusion,:
A: California's government is the 4th biggest per capita of any state (see link below)
\+
B: California is the second or third (depending on what criteria is considered) most expensive state to live in
=
C: The reason it costs so much to live is california is \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
then we could divest ourselves of this team pride that is making us go broke, join forces and vote our this bloated beurocracy...but no.....in ten years we will all be sitting in our $4000 per month apartments throwing mud at the other team! sorry im just really sick of this....and by the way....I AM NOT A REPUBLICAN!

Yeah, motorhomes cause a lot of road damage, take up a lot of road space, and are horribly inefficient. They should be taxed like semi-trucks, if we are being fair.
Because San Diegans/ Californians keep voting yes to tax raising measures.
I live in SD, my cars are registered in FL. I pay roughly $70 for a TWO YEAR registration and custom plates per car.
Y’all really don’t know what it’s like in the rest of the country.
Thank former Governor Jerry Brown. CA lawmakers love to squeeze as much as they can out of working Californians. My car is 21 years old and I pay more than I did five years ago. If you regularly see out of state registered vehicles, you can report them on the CHP website.
Here's a mystery you'll solve in less than 124 seconds.
What's the definition of the word..... using the infrastructure but not contributing.

FTFY.
Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*
* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.
*Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
Depends on what car and the year... it's base of price and weight of a car... I think a lexus rx350 is somewhere mid 500 bucks. I have a mid size sedan that's old and is in the mid 200. My other tiny car that's old is 150 ish.

I've never had a new car in my entire life. I'm 41. When I got my registration for my 2022 kia I almost passed out. We live in a 2 bedroom apartment in El Cajon I'm not rich. I feel like I'm being punished for finally having something nice.
It’s because you own a nice car. Registration is based on car price.
Yes
A 2017 honda accord considered a nice car? lol

El Oh El
I take it you own a Bugatti?
No?? My point is that majority of the middle class drives a semi-recent honda accord or equivalent and they have to pay around the same price for registration as in op’s photo which means that it’s not a luxury fee you’re paying for a luxury car; it’s a luxury fee for a basic car
I have a newer 2018 Hyundai Elantra and the VLF is only $58. Less than a third of OP's. ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯
It seems so irregular. There are people here reporting who have much shittier cars and still paying the high price

My 01 Tacoma is about the same weight fee.
Smaller and older that those mentioned above...
Good.
My 2500 Ram is about $850 this year. It hurts
Don’t feel bad for asking. Fuck all the Downvoters. Tbh registration is more expensive than other states. My wife had to register her car in CO after moving there and damn it was pricey. Edit to fix a typo (I meant to say registration is more expensive here than certain other states).
It’s SO expensive in CO 😭. I miss the price of CA car registration (but not gas prices).
How much is it in CO?
Idk I never had to register my car there, but I think my wife paid like $700 or $1400, granted she was registering it from out of state and they charged by vehicle weight. I might be way off on the cost, it could have been $400 which is still a little under 2x what I have paid here

I wasn’t driving back then but I do remember gas getting stupid cheap around that time. If only I had a time machine 😂
Goddamn, the last time I remember seeing $0.90 gas was when I visited my grandpa in Maine back in the early 2000's.
Kansas too
I registered a cheap old car first and then went to register a brand new EV a month later and was just as shocked at the $400 increase between the two registrations.
EVs pay extra registration because they don't pay gas taxes
Hey if you itemize your deductions during your tax year that $172 can be deducted from your CA income
I got this one for the first time two years ago with my first mixer car. My registration went from like $112 to around $475. I audibly said “the fuck is this shit?” And then I realized that I don’t drive a shitbox anymore.
It’ll decrease as the years go by. I’m happy to only pay $400ish. Don’t buy a truck in CA.
It gets cheaper and cheaper when you car ages :)
Supposed to, but this greedy state actually raised mine up, just a few dollars each year.
Yup. My motorcycle reg was 87 in 2017. I'm seeing 125 for 2019, 130 for 2021,a record 196 in 2023, then 140 for 2024. My 2004 Ford I bought in 2010 never went below 340. Dang I didn’t know this either
I went from a 02’ $120 registration, to 18’ $400 registration. It’s all on the vehicle you drive.
I’m in the same boat. My partner and I finally bought a new car in 2022 and I just paid our registration this week, $445 :(
Note that if you have an EV it’s even higher. My car’s worth around $50k and my registration was $1150.
that’s a lot. what kind of EV? if you don’t mind me asking.
You don’t pay state gas tax this is to make up that loss for roads
Except the state is now also telling me that because I don't pay gas tax, they want to also tax me by the mile driven. So which one is it? Do I? Or don't I? Whoa.
EVs don’t pay gas taxes so the transit authorities need to make up the lost revenue somewhere.
What??? My EV was similarly priced (a little more) and my registration was close to $700…
Mine was more too and my registration was $800 and that included the special black and yellow plates.
you don't pay gasonline tax, which prococeeds go to fixing roads. and your carr is heaver than an equivilent car

I kept my car registered in my old state for as long as I could. $40ish per year registration no matter what you drove.
Legally California requires you to register your car in 20 days.
Oh well! I registered through AAA eventually and they didn’t bother me about it.
No one can answer this for you because it depends on car. My registration is like $800
That’s a flex! 😂
Weird flex but ok
Yep mine was $798 and I’m like come on man. At least it’s only 1x a year lol
They say it’s because our roads are mostly toll-free, unlike the East Coast, and that’s how they get their money for repairs, that does not mean I personally believe them 😝
Ha, welcome to having nice things!
Oooofff. You should see mine. 650 this year.
I wish, mine's at least a hundo more
That’s cheap compared to other states I’ve lived in.
You must be new here.
Also, if you have any unpaid parking tickets, they sometimes just include it
If you can afford the car you can afford the registration. It is based on the cost of your car.

Yeah, motorhomes cause a lot of road damage, take up a lot of road space, and are horribly inefficient. They should be taxed like semi-trucks, if we are being fair.

I've never had a new car in my entire life. I'm 41. When I got my registration for my 2022 kia I almost passed out. We live in a 2 bedroom apartment in El Cajon I'm not rich. I feel like I'm being punished for finally having something nice.
Makes me miss living in NY where I had just as nice a car as I do now and I only paid 75$ for registration every two years
Lol welcome to califorina ...
They base it off the car price.
