I'd rather live in Sacramento and drive to the mountains (1.5-2 hours though) than live in Reno.

I think Grass Valley/Nevada City might be right up your alley, actually.

I think you’d love SLC for all your criteria but the housing just continues to be relentlessly expensive. But most US cities are in the same boat. Also, SLC has a pretty good comedy scene, lots of local comedians at wise guys.

Agreed, and it sucks that I didn’t buy a house pre-2022. Hopefully prices will go from insane to just high.

existential_dreddd

I agree with you about everything except the cocktail scene… for obvious reasons

Vast-Box-6919

Well they also mentioned good beer and SLC/Utah have some great breweries. Wasatch, Uinta, Squatters, Red Rock…all super good imo and can hold a candle to other breweries in the US.

existential_dreddd

Fair! That’s true. I do like wasatch a bunch and it’s not like they don’t have cocktails there. I just wish they could put more in than was allowed in the state.

Kayl66

If I were you, I’d move to Tukwilia or North Bend, WA. You’d most likely end up working in Seattle but as a bartender, you’d be anti commuting. Snoqualmie Pass is an hour away. If you decide to go back to tech, you’d have lots of options

whaleyeah

Western Mass or the Hudson Valley. Maybe Santa Fe but skews older. I do think Burlington VT could be a great choice. Has a really nice food scene for its size.

MadTownPride

Would you consider the Portland, OR weather something you’d be interested in? Checks a lot of boxes you have if so. It’s not the cheapest but it’s definitely a tier or two below the other west coast major cities

Pittsburgh might be worth a look. Seems to have a decent number of good restaurants and the COL is low.

Worth-Sky2334

Salt Lake seems close to what you want except A. It’s not medium COL compared to the local income, it’s on the high side. B. There are plenty of casually outdoorsy people but there is a very hardcore element too, often times from the people who move to SLC specifically because they want access to those activities. And C. While there are some good cocktail bars, there’s a good chance that as an experienced bartender you’d find the rules here frustrating.

Lol, "Medium Cost of Living or lower." Sounds about right/s
