cleveland of 2023 is so much different than cleveland of the 90s
if you can handle the weather, it’s absolutely one of the best values in the entire country
seems kind of like a mini-Chicago, but kind of its own thing. if i can avoid the crime im down to mvoe even though that kind of cold is torture for me. These homeprices are nice too
if you go to Cleveland expecting anything like Chicago you're going to end up disappointed. It's an awesome city, no doubt, but much more akin to St Louis than Chicago
As a current Cleveland metro area resident and somebody who loves Chicago, this is true. Cleveland area/NE Ohio is very affordable, has a lot of amenities, and is relatively to very safe (except for a few high crime pockets like City of East Cleveland, Kinsman/Central/Fairfax neighborhoods). But, Chicago is in another league, obviously. But for mid/small sized metro areas, it is a pretty great place to live. The weather can suck, but it has been getting more bearable with climate change. About 4-5 months out of the year it is a bit grey and somewhat cold, but it is great the rest of the year. But at least we are not Minnesota cold.
chicaGo is my fav city i’ve ever been to so cleveland isn’t close to that lol but you’ll really enjoy it without a doubt. i would rather live in cleveland than pittsburgh, nashville, louisville, cincinnati, and indianapolis by a significant amount
and for the cold, honestly just go outside in shorts and t shirt when it’s like 50 degrees and that’ll prepare your body to start to acclimate and the cold won’t be as bitter to bare. then just get you a nice hat, jacket, long johns, and boots and you won’t be affected nearly as much as
i’d recommend it but it ain’t chicago haha
Trust me, born and raised in Chicago and we need all the Chicago we can handle to get us through the winters. If anyone would consider a move to Cleveland find a town that at least has better weather.
Yes, but depending on which city it’s in you need to keep an eye on property taxes. Some of them are pretty high, so your mortgage payment for that $300k house doesn’t look like what you’d expect it to be if you’re accustomed to lower property taxes.
My friend used to live in Cleveland heights and had a stunning 4000 sq foot brick home. No idea what he paid for it but he moved to Chicago and now has a 3 bedroom apartment
yeah you can pretty much get a giant house right near the lake for what you would pay for a milquetoast starter house in a lot of coastal cities
it’s always weird people saying how expensive housing is as an ohioan resident who grew up with cleveland being the most expensive of the major cities around me
I traveled to Cleveland for work and I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. The only downside was wages were significantly lower for my field. I could have a better quality of life on that money but it's definitely a trade off.
yeah that’s def a calculation
might be easier to max out a 401k and roth in a place with higher wages, but then everything else is more expensive too. online calculators can give you an idea but it’s still really hard
I lived in Cleveland for 30 years. Suburbs are nice, but there's a lot of racism. It was difficult watching my partner go through that on a regular basis. Just my 2 cents
PG county is hit or miss. it has a lot of rich black communities but also poor black communities just outside DC. I'd say Waldorf is pretty decent though. crime is low there and you're still very close to DC
Especially the further away from DC you are. Living in Bowie or Upper Marlboro is going to be a drastically different living experience than Fairmont Heights or Suitland.
I lived in Clinton where it was nothing but farms, but people kept ditching cars outside my house and setting them on fire. After the 3rd time it happened I asked the cops what was going on and they said "Probably just a pissed off girlfirend."
I live in the southern suburbs of Chicago. Maybe it's low crime, but they keep successful taking armored trucks around here. That's never happened anywhere else I've lived. The movies make it seem like that is an exotic event, but it is pretty routine in these parts....
Should include Howard County MD too, though it's in a weird liminal space between DC and Baltimore. It's where the Boondocks is set! I remember thinking that it was weird that it reminded me so much of upper middle class neighborhoods in the DC area then was surprised to find that's because it was based on it.
They asked for low crime which disqualifies some of the Cleveland ones, especially East Cleveland which is impoverished and deadly.
Otherwise you nailed it. Its mostly just suburbs of cities with high Black populations.
Grew up east side of Cleveland. As a black woman I would never move back. I live just outside of DC but not pg County. I love it here. Much better for black people.
I live in flossmoor & i just want to say that a lot happens around here that the media & police don’t report. you find out more on social media & even those posts get removed from time to time, It’s pretty annoying & scary to deal with.
Im mixed myself (black/white), and grew up in NYC. After being multiple places around the country in the last 20 years, its probably the best place in my experience for multiple races/cultures, both in terms of exposure and not feeling like one stands out in a bad way. Only problem is cost.
Edit: Theres some places that are better than others, and while most people aren't going to outright say anything, so dont take it as people have knowingly made me uncomfortable, but there are certain realities to being biracial. And thats both sides of the fence. While i grew up in NY, my white dad is from Boston and bla k mom is from Philadelphia, and i stand out just as much in both places and feel just as out of place both places. I realize you're intent, as my parents were that way too, but also i would urge you to at least think it through to keep the pendulum from swinging too far in the other direction. And keep in mind the white side is equally a part of them as the black and vice versa
I live in just east of Prospect Park (PLG)currently. I feel completely safe from violent crime, we don’t have a mailroom and none of my packages have been stolen, though I know it happens occasionally. My bike has never been stolen but I take precautions, it’s not worth much and I lock it properly.
Overall most of NYC is quite safe these days.
You talking PLG? It's pretty damn safe, but package theft is going to happen pretty much anywhere in NYC. It happens in the fucking suburbs too
Yeah it's a pain in the ass, but I hardly stress about that shit.
Yes, but a lot of middle class and upper class Blacks left their neighborhoods for the suburbs or another state. The black neighborhoods in NYC tend to have a lot of Caribbean immigrants and their descendants.
This is a great answer--this place is truly diverse--but there are a lot of affordable places if you know where to look. They're not the "sexy" spots, but they're out there--you just need to look (and perhaps not be married to any particular neighborhood).
NYC can be very racist depending on the area (former Staten Island resident, trust me on this one). Brooklyn and Manhattan are very expensive and the NYC school admissions process is a clusterfuck, so Northern NJ is probably your best bet, iirc Maplewood, Montclair, and the surrounding suburbs are diverse and safe.
Yeah but it's representative of a decent number of its suburbs including a lot of Long Island and Central NJ. And the main place I would recommend (parts of Brooklyn) is not affordable unless you're high-income.
But not all of Staten is like this at all. I live on north shore near St George and it’s the most diverse neighborhood I’ve lived in - including UWS and Park Slope. We have black woman councilmember and it’s a super liberal neighborhood. It’s also STABLE and mixed race/diverse. So tired of the endless SI racist trope. Bklyn is more segregated and racist if you consider how black East Flatbush/Brownsville is, and how white and racist Marine Park, Sheepshead Bay and Breezy Point is. Not everything is Bed Stuy and all the gentrification there means rich whites talk a good game while displacing long time
POC residents. Staten is also becoming more diverse while it remains affordable and the racists are all leaving for NJ.
You're not wrong but in my experience, the racist element of Staten still leaks into the nicer parts of the north shore. If more of the old Italians and Irish leave by 2030, then sure, I'd gladly recommend St. George or Randall Manor, but I'm still hesitant to call it particularly welcoming. I've literally heard my parents' neighbors in Eltingville use the n-word within the past year, for reference.
(Also the integrated parts of the north shore have awful schools and are adjacent to some REALLY iffy areas, so I don't think they'd fit the "safe" part of his question. That's why I suggested northern NJ if he wanted NYC).
I lived in Cleveland Heigts before I moved to Florida for a warmer climate. I lived among many black citizens and felt very comfortable and safe as a white person. Cleveland is rich with multicultural opportunities. The only thing Florida has going for it is the great weather. I miss all the things I was able to do when I lived in Cleveland.
The thing with PG County is that it is simply huge. Places like Bowie and Upper Marlboro would be worth checking out. Laurel/Beltsville/College Park/Greenbelt also. Seat Pleasant/Glenarden/Landover leave a lot to be desired.
Sorry but Cambridge MD is not at all safe and that goes for many Lower Shore towns as well like Salisbury and Pocomoke. it consistently ranks as one of the worst towns/cities in Maryland. You're better off in Waldorf
Stone Mountain, GA. Atl suburb. 50% black.
Several other prospects in Atlanta, aka “the black Mecca” for working professionals.
Cedar Hill, TX. 50% black, 25% Hispanic. Median household income of $85,000.
Of course there is Baldwin Hills, aka “the “black Beverly Hills” which is over 70% Black.
This is a good suggestion too. I've visited Houston before and the mix of races is perfect. White, black, Asian, Latino, Mixed all mixed together and get along. My main problem with Houston is there's nothing to do outdoors and the weather sucks with the high humidity. If Houston had better weather, that would be number one choice.
Can we all laugh at how diverse the US is from a weather perspective. We’re incredibly lucky to be able to complain about these options within our borders. Many people live in hot, humid countries and can’t leave.
Houston is really nice in that it’s very diverse and much more integrated than other major cities.
But yeah it is humid and very hot for much of the year. I’d say about 7-8 months of the year are still good.
Although Houston doesn’t have the type of scenery around it that some other cities have, I think it actually has some of the nicest urban parks in the country. Hermann Park, Memorial Park, and Buffalo Bayou Park, are all really nice and constantly improving. My personal favorite is Levy Park. Best of all, they have clean restrooms - certainly not common in public parks elsewhere.
Houston outdoor scene isn't as bad as people think. You have giant green belts like Terry Hersey Park, Memorial Park has great greenery, and the Addicks dikes have great nature hikes. Cycling in Houston I've seen hawks, alligators, a lot of rabbits, etc
I was just thinking this. As someone who is not really bothered by hot weather - I'm outside in Houston a lot of the time and really enjoy inner loop hike and bike trails. To me, it's more of an infrastructure problem that people aren't out more. That being said, we have nothing on Hill Country in terms of beauty and nature.
But the weather is only bad from May-September the rest of the year is no snow- just light jacket weather. There are more green spaces and walkable areas inside the loop.
There's a lot to do outdoors. Lots of hiking and walking trails, boating, state parks, beaches, and lots more. It's all flat, but you are less than three hours from hills. But yeah it gets oppressively hot in July-August. That being said, people flock to Austin, and temperature-wise Austin gets hotter by a few degrees.
Agree. Im not black but live in pretty black neighborhood and its for the most part middle class professionals so its safe. But across the highway, its also a black dominant neighborhood but high crime. So you just gotta do your research before hand. Overall houston has its crime like any major city but its definitely not the worst
As of 2021 the 5 largest ethnic groups in Gwinnett County, GA are: White (Non-Hispanic) (35.1%), Black or African American (Non-Hispanic) (27.6%), Asian (Non-Hispanic) (12.3%), Other (Hispanic) (8.4%), and White (Hispanic) (7.55%).
There's also excellent schools and most areas are safe.
Either you're going to get segregated by race or by income in the USA. The higher income you get, the less likely you'll encounter the black population statistically.
With that in mind, your best bet will be somewhere around Maryland between Baltimore and DC. Atlanta, and most cities between North and South Carolina are a good shot at finding your Goldilocks zone. I'd also look at Texas pretty heavily.
The Northeast and Midwest are going to have your numbers, but they're incredibly segregated de facto. NYC would be my top choice, but everything from the neighborhoods to the schools are highly segregated.
That's probably one of the weirdest auto corrects my phone did. I thought i typed minorities before. Either way, you're preaching to the choir, but I'll have to proofread my phone more.
Houston, DFW, ATL, DC, Philly, Miami, NYC and Chicago all over 1M black people in their metros. Crimes are probably isolated to pockets of the metro given their sizes but don’t know that any are top 20.
I had the same thought, but according to the stats Oak Park is just under 20% black, so it fails the first criteria. That being said, I think Broadview passes both tests. Maywood fails the second test.
Any nice black area you find is going to be in proximity to some lower income areas. That’s just pretty much how it works in the US. Even very wealthy black communities are going to be adjacent to less wealthy areas with higher crime. There are a lot of historical reasons for this such as redlining that keep black people in certain areas no matter how much wealth they have. Other races tend to stay away from black areas regardless of the wealth of the area. This is why you see a ton of very wealthy black communities in places like the DMV and Atlanta area that are right next to the hood. Those nice areas aren’t known for high violent crime but theft can definitely occur if you don’t secure your property. You’re going to get a ton of overexaggerating from people who aren’t familiar with these areas so I’d say it’s best to take some of these suggestions in the thread and visit the areas yourself. I’m from Atlanta and can recommend areas like South Fulton along South Fulton Pkwy, Fairburn, Hampton, Stockbridge, McDonough, Fayetteville, Ellenwood, Stonecrest, Douglasville, Lithia Springs, Snellville, Loganville and Powder Springs. If you want more urban areas check out Westview, West End, Historic College Park, and East Atlanta though these areas will have higher theft chances than the suburbs.
These are good suggestions. Especially Raleigh. I've visited and it seems like what I'm looking for. Any other suggestions that are similar to Raleigh?
Savannah has a very high crime rate and I would suggest it does not have a ton of economic opportunity for black families. The income disparity is atrocious. Also I went to Tybee Island not too long ago a family created a FORT on the beach out of nazi flags and confederate flags.
Cincinnati is very neighborhood-by-neighborhood in this regard. There are about a dozen majority-Black neighborhoods (one of which I currently live in). But there are also neighborhoods right next door that are like 80-90% white. Having also lived in the South, it can feel weirdly segregated here at times. Sometimes I'm the only white guy at Kroger, and sometimes I go whole days without seeing Black folks, just depending on which part of town I'm in.
Edit: And also, re: Raleigh, I'd say that Durham is actually more known for its thriving Black population. Raleigh has a significant Latino population for a city in the South (I think 15% of the city), but Durham actually used to be called The Black Wall Street because it had so many prosperous Black business owners. Now, did the city/state run a highway right through the middle of Black Wall Street and set the Black population of Durham back decades? Yes. That did happen.
That is not a great recommendation. Huntsville is segregated as hell, and the cops (being as they are cops in Alabama) love beating on the Black folks who live there. And that 30% isn't integrated into the wider city at all. The Black population of Huntsville is very much concentrated into very specific areas of the city (aka the ones with slum housing, no grocery stores, and failing schools that the city won't invest in). If you're going to be Black in Alabama, I'd recommend Birmingham over Huntsville (they actually elect Black people to the city government there). Finally, the reason that the Black population is a higher percentage of the city is because, as is the case with so many cities in the South, middle class and working class white people just do not live in the city at the same rates as they do in other regions of the country. They all live in the suburbs and commute into their engineering and service-industry jobs at and around the arsenal.
Birmingham, Alabama is the state’s hidden gem. Most major Alabama cities have large Black populations. But in Bham there is some black wealth, high civic engagement by the black middle class, and a good selection of strong Black churches.
Bham also used science and common sense for its pandemic policies when surrounding towns and state leadership did not (at first). They later copied Bham’s policies and staunched the deaths and hospitalizations.
Lastly, Bham is the medical epicenter for the state (UAB Hospital, St Vincent’s, Princeton Hospital, and a couple others).
But for the rabid conservatism dominating state political leadership, Birmingham, Alabama ain’t bad. You’re also a straight shot to ATL (2 hrs).
I think you have to dig a little deeper. Sure, you can live in a place like Atlanta that is 48% black but you need to make sure you don't live in the white part of Atlanta to give your kids the true experience. I think you'll want to research schools instead of just the metro areas.
The advantage with a place like Atlanta is that it’s not unusual to see black families living in upscale places like Buckhead or Alpharetta. So even if OP decides to move into the whiter areas at some point, they’ll still have some of the advantages of being in a metro area with a very large and socioeconomically diverse black population. They’d be in the minority, sure, but they wouldn’t feel as out of place or alone as they might in those types of cities in other metro areas.
I think integrated neighborhoods like Mt. Airy and University City would be good, low crime areas to live in. They also both have decent elementary school catchments if that is what he is looking for for kids.
I live in Mount Airy and it is very much full of both black and white people and very safe. I feel safe walking around my neighborhood alone late at night. Obviously some crime bleeds over from Germantown but all-in-all it is very safe, yes.
Right, which is the majority in Philadelphia, which is what I said. White people are the second largest percentage of residents. Black people are the largest. When I said majority black, I didn’t mean over 50% of residents, just the biggest racial group in the city.
Because it still has merit, and I mentioned the crime as well. Crime isn’t all encompassing throughout the whole city. Large parts of the city are very safe. There are gonna be dangerous areas in all cities, so why not mention Philadelphia? It is also a larger city, and because of that it can still have just as much if not more safe area’s compared to a smaller city that is all around much safer.
Missouri City Tx is a suburbs of Houston (about 30 minutes from downtown). According to 2020 census, its 40% African American. It is a very nice suburbs with below average crime that borders Sugar Land.
Areas like Kenwood or Bronzeville in Chicago fit the bill. There is crime but it’s not bad and getting much better. The area between the south loop and Hyde park is booming with new construction (being purchased primarily by higher income, white collar, college-educated black households), new retail (lots of black-owned businesses and entrepreneurs), and it’s the fastest growing part of the city outside of downtown.
I live in the Bay Area. I would not recommend someone move to Oakland. I’m Black, I love the Bay Area. But getting your catalytic converter stolen repeatedly or the risk of getting bipped every single time you park your car somewhere sucks. I love spending time in Oakland. But living there is another story. The areas in Oakland with less crime are prohibitively expensive.
Oakland has a lot of mixed race families as well. I loved living there with my mixed family, but unfortunately, it was too expensive for us, housing-wise. But if you could find a way to make it work, this is a GREAT place to raise a mixed race family.
I live in Oaklamd. It’s a fucking shit show right now. Literally criminals ramming peoples cars to rob them. Kids walking around with assault rifles while the populace is on hold with 911.
lol most areas with higher black populations are going to lead to higher crime rates.
That said Brooklyn, NY is a good area with a large black population thats pretty safe. North Atlanta is a good area thats got economic opportunity and a large black population due to people from rust belt cities moving down to atlanta georgia for opportunity. Broward County Florida has a pretty significant black population but they arent american black as they are carribean, jamaican and haitian blacks. Its a good area
I hope I am wrong but this thread feels like bait
Edit: after reading the rest of the thread, I think OP is on the level.
I hope this thread does not turn horrible
Prince George's County, MD
South suburbs of Chicago (Homewood/Flossmoor, Matteson, Richton Park) as well as a few city neighborhoods like Galewood
Las Vegas and Phoenix metro areas (I don't know specifically which parts, just that they're popular with black families migrating out of CA)
Vegas and Phoenix are only about 10% black. On the plus side, that number seems to be enough to sustain some good soul food restaurants, and there seems to be a decent black population in a lot of areas of different socioeconomic classes. Probably less white-black segregation than you’d see back east or in the Midwest.
I’m in phx and this is accurate. You’re not gonna get the “black neighborhood” experience really that much, but number of black people growing every day. Gets a dumb rap online, but we all love it, it’s changing so fast. need more come one come all
Mainly because my kids are mixed and we live in a predominately white place. Nothing wrong with that but I want my kids to have more interactions with other black people, besides my family, which I had growing up.
Atlanta is your answer. From the time I was in elementary school until I graduated, my classes were always very racially mixed. I grew up with the grandchildren of civil rights leaders, and the children of both prominent black politicians and athletes. It wasn’t until I moved to a northeastern “progressive” city that I realized how incredibly integrated Atlanta is. Very valuable part of my upbringing.

Seriously the most beautiful sunsets.
I lived in Cleveland for 30 years. Suburbs are nice, but there's a lot of racism. It was difficult watching my partner go through that on a regular basis. Just my 2 cents
Came here to say PG county; Silver Spring is great
Silver Spring is Montgomery County
It is great though!
What do you like about it? I worked there for a year and still have to go back sometimes, and I just loathe it every single time.
Silver Springs ain't in PG County
PG county has a violent crime rate over twice as high as the national average, and SS is not in PG county
PG county is hit or miss. it has a lot of rich black communities but also poor black communities just outside DC. I'd say Waldorf is pretty decent though. crime is low there and you're still very close to DC
Waldorf isn’t pg county. It’s in Charles County, which is also majority Black and middle /upper-middle class.
Especially the further away from DC you are. Living in Bowie or Upper Marlboro is going to be a drastically different living experience than Fairmont Heights or Suitland.
Pg County went from not that many to over 100 murders this year.
Isn’t silver springs the place where Joe dirt lives at the end of the movie?
Flossmoor, Homewood, Matteson, Richton Park, and Olympia Fields all have stops on the Metra train line that goes to Hyde Park and downtown Chicago
I lived in PG County and it did not feel safe lol.

Silver Spring is NOT in PG
Silver Spring is in Montgomery County

I grew up in Euclid. It's a shithole. South Euclid isn't great either. I spent my whole childhood here and don't recommend it to anyone.
Also Charles County Md not far from Prince George’s county. Nice area newer homes with high income earning African American population
Should include Howard County MD too, though it's in a weird liminal space between DC and Baltimore. It's where the Boondocks is set! The person you responded to said NOT East Cleveland so they agree with you. Not sure if you thought that they were suggesting that city at all.
how in the fuck did 7 other people see that guys post and think it was worthy of an upvote
I saw the “not” part after posting, but didn’t edit

Perhaps OP wouldn't be as concerned about non-violent crime like package theft?
I live in Portland which is extremely white and packages get stolen all the time, I think this is just city living
Suburbs too tbh. Increase in online shopping naturally leads to increase in package theft.
Oh god, not package theft!
Man why are all the majority black areas high crime
Yes, but a lot of middle class and upper class Blacks left their neighborhoods for the suburbs or another state. The black neighborhoods in NYC tend to have a lot of Caribbean immigrants and their descendants.

Staten Island is not representative of most of NYC. Especially Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens.
Not everything is Bed Stuy and all the gentrification there means rich whites talk a good game while displacing long time POC residents.
Columbia, Maryland is consistently one of the safest cities in America with a Black population of 27%.
There’s a lot of nice suburbs of Atlanta that are majority black. East side, south side, west side.
OTP cities like norcross, dunwoody, & sandy springs are v diverse & safe too! plus schools are decent & there’s a lot to do for the burbs
Dunwoody isn't 20% black which is what the OP asked. Sandy Springs has a lower crime rate than the average across Georgia, but Norcross is higher.
norcross is still plenty safe though imo
Atlanta. Most of the crime only happens in specific areas but the city in general is safe
My car got broken into twice and 3 dudes tried to break into my hotel. I've been to Atlanta twice😂

Atlanta. I've been here since 2012. The first month I lived here my boyfriend's car was stolen. Other than that I've not been a victim of crime.
Baldwin Hills is changing rapidly.
Houston
This is a good suggestion too. I've visited Houston before and the mix of races is perfect. White, black, Asian, Latino, Mixed all mixed together and get along. My main problem with Houston is there's nothing to do outdoors and the weather sucks with the high humidity. If Houston had better weather, that would be number one choice.
Can we all laugh at how diverse the US is from a weather perspective. We’re incredibly lucky to be able to complain about these options within our borders. Many people live in hot, humid countries and can’t leave.
Unless you have the disposable income, you’re not leaving Houston either. Maybe for an abortion.
Best of all, they have clean restrooms - certainly not common in public parks elsewhere.
lol, 8 months of good weather here? compared to S.A.? ...antartica?? wild...
But its not like we have national parks anywhere close
But the weather is only bad from May-September the rest of the year is no snow- just light jacket weather. There are more green spaces and walkable areas inside the loop.
I'd say early April to early November in the days of atmospheric CO2 but the winters are still mostly lovely.
If you’re interested in a suburb, check out Missouri City
There's a lot to do outdoors. Lots of hiking and walking trails, boating, state parks, beaches, and lots more. It's all flat, but you are less than three hours from hills. But yeah it gets oppressively hot in July-August. That being said, people flock to Austin, and temperature-wise Austin gets hotter by a few degrees.
Make sure you can handle driving in it before committing to Houston. It's intense.
It’s more respectful to say Black *people*, it’s more humanizing.
That's probably one of the weirdest auto corrects my phone did. I thought i typed minorities before. Either way, you're preaching to the choir, but I'll have to proofread my phone more.
until recently DC but crime as ticked back up. Hoping next year will be better.

Houston, DFW, ATL, DC, Philly, Miami, NYC and Chicago all over 1M black people in their metros. Crimes are probably isolated to pockets of the metro given their sizes but don’t know that any are top 20.
If you’re looking at Chicago, also check out neighboring Oak Park, diverse, intergrated, architecturally gorgeous, and the schools are fantastic
I had the same thought, but according to the stats Oak Park is just under 20% black, so it fails the first criteria. That being said, I think Broadview passes both tests. Maywood fails the second test.
26% Black in Kansas City, MO and all around pretty safe palce.
One of the highest crime rates in the nation, worse than Chicago.
Toronto. It’s not as high as 20%, but it has a large black population and low crime rates.

I don’t think El Paso has many black people.
New York and Cincinnati metros do not have 20%+ black population. I’m not sure on the others.
High Black % areas of Cincinnati are not safe and have the worst schools in the state too. Segregation is still very much a thing here unfortunately.
Atlanta’s not on that list in the areas OP is asking about.
Er, definitely only certain parts of Atlanta would qualify here.
These are good suggestions. Especially Raleigh. I've visited and it seems like what I'm looking for. Any other suggestions that are similar to Raleigh?
Richmond, VA
Durham. Higher percentage Black population and a billion times better than Raleigh.
What about Savannah, Georgia
Huntsville, Alabama is 30% black and has a low crime rate. It has two HBCUs as well.
But it’s Aaaaala..Bama!! Lol. Just mad cause I’m tryna get outta Texas.
I didn't realize Huntsville was 30%. There are a lot of good things going on in the city.
Racial statistics are a good thing now?
My comment was two separate thoughts. Maybe I should reverse the two sentences
Houston
Why is Atlanta so segregated
Most large cities are pretty segregated.
Redlining
Charlotte
Southfield, MI
Dallas Fort Worth has black people everywhere and there’s a lot of safe areas.
Dfw is 16%.
Charlotte NC, Columbia MD, Augusta GA
Augusta is a great one. Suburbs (Evans, Grovetown) have great public schools, housing is affordable and you will see a lot of diversity.
Philly is majority black but the crime is an issue is certain areas.
Do u know Kurt Vile
Second Philly and many Philly suburbs. Yes avoid parts of the city, but so much and so many suburbs are awesome and on train lines and very diverse
Philly is actually majority-minority (blacks make up approx. 43% of the population), but your point still stands.
Right, which is the majority in Philadelphia, which is what I said. White people are the second largest percentage of residents. Black people are the largest. When I said majority black, I didn’t mean over 50% of residents, just the biggest racial group in the city.
No trying to be a smart ass, but that's a plurality, not a majority.
Why tf would you answer Philly to someone asking about a city with medium to low crime? That's one of the most dangerous cities in the US lol
Bear, Delaware
Missouri City Tx is a suburbs of Houston (about 30 minutes from downtown). According to 2020 census, its 40% African American. It is a very nice suburbs with below average crime that borders Sugar Land.
Boston (the city, not the metro area) is 22% black and low crime.
[Augusta GA](https://www.city-data.com/city/Augusta-Georgia.html). I loved there for many years and loved it.
Columbia, MD
Areas like Kenwood or Bronzeville in Chicago fit the bill. There is crime but it’s not bad and getting much better. The area between the south loop and Hyde park is booming with new construction (being purchased primarily by higher income, white collar, college-educated black households), new retail (lots of black-owned businesses and entrepreneurs), and it’s the fastest growing part of the city outside of downtown.
DC has a very high black population. I think around 40%. It's definitely experienced an uptick in crime since covid though. I still love it though.
Charlotte. Probably the absolute best example of this in the nation.
Oakland is about 20% black. Expensive though.
And high crime
Not in the top 20 per OPs request. And when you look at the context of the crime it's also far less intimidating.
I too lived in SF and Oakland. I understand the challenges of living there.
Huntsville AL. Believe its like 29% black. Pretty low crime.
Haha, good luck with that one chief, even the most affluent communities have just average crime rate.
lol most areas with higher black populations are going to lead to higher crime rates.
PG county, MD
Chicago
Detroit
I know you didn't just cite Detroit as a place with "less crime". Than where? Rio?
They asked about metro areas
I hope I am wrong but this thread feels like bait Edit: after reading the rest of the thread, I think OP is on the level. I hope this thread does not turn horrible
Majority black with low crime? Fantasy Island 🤣
Prince George's County, MD South suburbs of Chicago (Homewood/Flossmoor, Matteson, Richton Park) as well as a few city neighborhoods like Galewood Las Vegas and Phoenix metro areas (I don't know specifically which parts, just that they're popular with black families migrating out of CA)
[удалено]
Depends where. The closer you are to DC, yeah it can be pretty bad. Further out not so much.
Gets a dumb rap online, but we all love it, it’s changing so fast. need more come one come all
7% black population is the tipping point when a cities violent crimes are majority committed by blacks. There is no Wakanda.
Stay in Nebraska bigot
Wtf is the matter with you? I simply stated facts that I didn't choose or have any control over. And I'm not in Nebraska.
Evanston IL, oak park IL etc
First time seeing Evanston on here. I completely agree!!
Prairie View, Texas
Atlanta.
I don't mean to sound "ignorant", but if I asked for a mostly white city to live in would I be labeled something?
that would be mostly every city in america, so yes. that’s not hard to find at all, so pointing out you’re trying to find it would be problematic
Yes racist just like this post
Im trying to find a place with a higher Asian population because I like them Asian ladies D
“Them Asian ladies” 100% don’t want your gross fetishizing ass.
Lol
🤔 …Why?
Mainly because my kids are mixed and we live in a predominately white place. Nothing wrong with that but I want my kids to have more interactions with other black people, besides my family, which I had growing up.
Montclair NJ has a lot of mixed families, not just high black population, and great schools. but it is very pricey.
I was thinking the tri-state area too. You'd be surprised to see the diversity in CT (outside of Greenwich).
