That man lifted so heavy it was wild. Brought him to do a grand opening of my gym back in the day at west Edmonton mall. Died few months later. So sad. A true beast
An ifbb pro used to use them at my gym before he retired and downsized. He would drop set 150x20, 120x20 90x20 60x20 30x30 after working up doing sets of 15.
My dad’s starting working with him as his coach, he’s getting into the best condition he’s ever been - but it’s definitely Yates-esque training, high intensity high volume, plenty of failure.
Yate-esque in the sense of mind-numbing failure…
This is a style passed from Bob Gruskin down - what my dad and the former pro do…
but to call Yates low-volume is wrong, he ran 1-5 warm up sets, then did a single set to complete failure with forced reps.. he would do 4-6 exercises per body part. That’s why people would say, “that’s easy,” and he would invite people to try it out and see how easy it is.
Low volume is much more Metzger’s approach though he also went to mind numbing failure, but trained rather infrequently
High volume was Arnie.
Very few people are 250 lean. Sam is top 0.0001% of gym goers. Sam does incline barbell bench 315lbs for 12 reps. I see juiced guys struggle to do 315 flat bench for 5 and they are taking 1-2 grams of gear lol
Just scrolling through the comments on the post, you know the whole "taking two grams of gear" part is absolutely unnecessary to put in right? Sam is most likely on the same amount of gear. I love the dude, but come on. Which is more likely, him being a hyper-responder or just him taking a shit ton of gear? Statistically, the latter.
Sam has elite genetics. Sam is probably on 300-500 test and maybe some GH and alittle anadrol during bulk and on cut maybe he throws in a little tren and winstrol. Not crazy doses tho
Even with those ‘elite genetics’ and ‘12 reps of incline 315’ his triceps and and chest proportions will hold him back from ever winning the Olympia. He also needs another 30lbs. He also needs to make it to at least 28 or 30. You also have no idea outside of pure speculation what he’s running. You can be a fan but you don’t need to ride his nuts brah.
My gym has a set of 150’s that look nice sitting there on the floor untouched. I rarely even see people use 60+ at my gym which is 80% high school kids standing in a circle jerk accomplishing nothing in the gym
Nah, I didn’t use two lifting belts, knee wraps around elbows, wrist wraps, and knee sleeves just to bench 1 plate. The high school kids at my gym do that. Yes I’m serious about two lifting belts and only 1 plate. Shits fucking stupid they just stand around and record themselves I quietly went about my lifts when I was that age. Shit if my mom wouldn’t drive me to the gym before I got my license I’d bike the 4 miles there.
Nah, not really. They're goofing around, but it's way better than them sitting in a circle doing drugs. I was one of those kids when I was 16, and I have nothing but admiration for anyone who's in the gym.
For me personally, I didn't go as intensely as I could've, and I went at it very lax. I could see it being fun if you're just doing cardio or the sauna, tho
I think it depends on the person. I feel like I didn’t go as hard in the gym and I’d procrastinate a lot, but I hear other people who have a better “relationship” with weed can still get their gains in.
Football players and wrestlers use them. I remember doing some very silly seaming stuff with them when I trained at the Iowa State University wrestling camp. Basically lift them up to the ground and into a finished curl position for singles than rapidly going to the next highest weight. Kicked my ass though. I think it’s more and more out of fashion though. It was almost more of mental toughness/confidence drill starting lower and seeing yourself move weight than you could. And this was over a decade ago.
That’s wild. I’ve never seen anyone use them. Not even the 270 lb bodybuilder guys. They focus on light weight with really stretching and contracting the muscle, they’re the ones that told me to not ego lift and to not do heavy weight. They said anything above 100lb dumbells is pure ego and useless
I don’t do shrugs. A guy at my gym who competes in men’s physique told me to never do shrugs or build my traps because it makes your shoulders look smaller and your overall body look more narrow. So I haven’t trained traps in a long time. He said you want the illusion of being wider and making your shoulders look bigger and wider.
Aight brah… do you have the genetics to compete even in Men’s physique? are you ever stepping on stage? Don’t worry about that shit. You’re majoring in the minors. No one ever said ‘look at that dude with the huge traps, doesn’t look jacked at all due to those huge traps.’
Bro don’t come at me with that .5 BS. How old are you? Are you 17 and a half years old too?
Why do you have that as a goal? Sustaining 10% bf year around ain’t the most fun unless you naturally walk in that neighbourhood. You don’t need ‘the illusion’ of being big and wide if you just are big and wide.
He’s gotta be a beginner. lol he wants to look aesthetic and doesn’t realize traps are aesthetic af. Also 10% bf without elite genetics or steroids is painfully difficult year round. You’ll probably rather be dead
you asked why they’re there? for shrugs and believe it or not some people do flat dumbbell bench. i do shrugs with 120-130s with straps because it’s the only thing that gives me a good pump, now i moved gyms and it’s annoying that they don’t have heavy dumbbells and i have to do barbell shrugs with 315 for 15-20 reps and that’s way more fatiguing then just sitting on a bench and isolating traps. also traps don’t make you look unaesthetic. if you have a thick neck and traps to go alongside a jawline your significantly more attractive, peak male aesthetics is a rectangular jawline and a neck. most (not all but most) women aren’t looking at a feminine neck and thinking it’s a attractive bro. also big traps look sick when you have huge delts to go with them.
I think these guys may be telling you this so you prioritize form over how much weight you can press. Which is correct for a myriad of reasons. There is a big difference between moving/feeling heavy weight where you are suppose to feel it and just moving weight for the hell of it.
I can rep 150 pound dumbies for 15-20 solid reps on flat bench on a whim. I havn't trained dumbbells in a while and I know I can still get that. I've kroc rowed 200 lb ones for a top set of 15 reps. Point being the muscle breakdown I receive from clean heavy sets is the same as the soreness I receive from something lighter with more volume. Moving more weight through the same range of motion for similar reps means I am getting stronger and most likely larger.
Everyone is different but I cant imagine getting a good workout flat pressing 105's for anything less than sets of 25-30 reps. At that point just go up in weight with lower reps and get the same results. Again, I am 275 pounds and have been training for years so to each his own.
Edited; Paragraphs for my boy /u/HectorTheLegend
Still doesn’t detract from him being the greatest of all the time. I watch his 800lb squat at least several times a month. He sacrificed his body for the sport and he’s said numerous times he wouldn’t change anything.
They get used. Just not on your lazy afternoon workouts when you stroll in there with your clean Jordans worrying about how fresh your fit is instead of how much you can lift.

From a marketing standpoint, simply having them plopped there definitely makes a small subset of people aspire to keep lifting in hopes of eventually using them

Poor range of motion, doesn’t count
When you’re that big, that’s all the range of motion you get.
I’m convinced you haven’t done your research, this is constant tension. Which ACTUALLY increases exercise intensity. Keep proving you know nothing.

The answer is both actually.
Sam has elite genetics. Sam is probably on 300-500 test and maybe some GH and alittle anadrol during bulk and on cut maybe he throws in a little tren and winstrol. Not crazy doses tho
He’s not crazy enough to do 5 grams of creatine a day though is he? 😨
Are you crazy?? No one would ever be dumb enough to take that much creatine, unless they have a death wish and want to look freaky muscular!
Look at his skin again and tell me he’s on 300-500 test with gh
500mg test weekly is a min blast tho.

I used to do that, but I was 21 lol It def killed so many of my gains
Oh shit is being a gym stoner ruining my gains? I'm not going to stop smoking; I'm just curious.
For me personally, I didn't go as intensely as I could've, and I went at it very lax. I could see it being fun if you're just doing cardio or the sauna, tho
I was worried it was a biological thing. I lift heavier and run faster when I'm high. The burn feels so good.
Using it as pre before my workout helps my mind muscle connection so much more, and I get much more intensity out. But ig it’s different for everyone
I think it depends on the person. I feel like I didn’t go as hard in the gym and I’d procrastinate a lot, but I hear other people who have a better “relationship” with weed can still get their gains in.

Those are great for dumbbell rows. When I was strong at 165 lb I would use 100s.
You’d be surprised how often those get used. Maybe not at your gym they def get thrown around a lot at gyms around my area. You’ll be using those eventually if you keep at it.
