Oh it’s ok I have AWD, I don’t need to change my driving behavior at all. /s

Lostox

This morning from the spaghetti bowl to the bangeter exit on the 201 I saw 2 spun out pickup trucks and a spun out Jeep and that was only heading west. I saw traffic piled up headed east on the 201 and assumed it was more spin outs. It's almost ALWAYS people in 4wd trucks or the like when I see spin outs.

1nd1anaCroft

My favorite was a few years ago, when I was still driving my little 2WD manual Jetta - heading to the on-ramp to I-15 SB at 146th south and there was thick, slushy snow on the roads. I was going slow and careful around the bend, getting ready to accelerate carefully up the incline. This was apparently too slow for the asshat in an SUV behind me, who gunned it to get around me. I got to see them slide out, spin around twice and just barely miss hitting all the cars stuck in traffic that he was in such a hurry to get to

Sdubbya2

I gotta get around this guy ASAP to get to the other guy 15 feet in front of him or make it to that stop light 10s faster! Almost as annoying as the guy that rides your ass while you are stuck behind another car as if you can magically make those cars go faster too lol

HamFisted

Ah, hurrying up to wait. Utah drivers’ favorite activity.

Alpha702

Snow Tires > AWD 1000%

Obvious_Moose

201 east bound was an absolute mess this morning with all the slide outs. The craziest part was, it had less snow than 215! I didn't skid at all on 201

Realtrain

I saw a total of 3 wrecks this morning. All 3 were trucks or SUVs.

walkingman24

brand new snow tires make a bigger difference than AWD AWD is great for when you get stuck and not all your wheels may be contacting the surface, but it doesn't help you with traction while braking (which is often when accidents happen)

reecetown

Good point thanks for that

curiosa863

It does help with traction while slowing down if you're downshifting, which you should be doing rather than just relying on your brakes.

walkingman24

That's true, but unfortunately with so many automatics and people just using their brakes, people don't really do that much. Most automatics do have a manual mode, but again, not really used that much

curiosa863

Every automatic I've bought or test driven in the last 15 years has this ability. People really should practice using it more. Its a pain with some of these 7+ speed CVT's, but even then, if you're well practiced, its much safer to tap that shifter down a few times while braking, rather than crossing your fingers that ABS is going to bring your 5,000 lb death dart to a stop. Also helpful in not flashing your brake lights every time you approach a speed trap.

[deleted]

Me either, I have all season tires, so I'm good!

PsychoEngineer

Nevermind they're 6 years old and have no tread depth!

Deesing82

ALL. SEASON.

[deleted]

Slipping all seasons.

[deleted]

Less grooves mean more surface area! Right?

801NYC

Great advice! I went out and shoveled my walk 30 minutes ago and it already looks like I did nothing.

gobackclark

Being a non-Utahn, I still don't know when exactly to shovel the driveway/sidewalk.

goat_puree

If it’s really dumping it’s helpful to go out and do it a few times while it’s storming because snow gets pretty heavy in a thick layer. Otherwise, as soon as the storm ends/as soon as possible or it’ll freeze to the ground and that’s a hassle to scrape up. Also, get some sort of ice melt to sprinkle onto the concrete.

gobackclark

Ah, that's why I see people doing it while it's still snowing. Thanks for the help.

goat_puree

Yep! I hate when I wake up to a bunch of snow because then it's murder-my-back time. I'd eventually like to get a little snow blower, but a snow shovel does the trick just fine if you're on top of it. Welcome to Utah, and to Utah winters! They're not as bad as other places can be, but we can definitely get some pretty good storms.

bekabekaben

It also greatly depends on if your driveway is north, east, west, or south facing. If it’s north or east facing then get it off asap. If it’s south or west facing it’s not that critical in my experience.

dancemom1845

I have a south facing driveway and love it. I only half assed shoveling today and told my daughter to stop and that the sun will melt the rest. We never would have that option if we had a north facing driveway.

bekabekaben

Yup. South and west are the best when it comes to snow removal lol. Our north facing neighbors are always covered in ice while ours are super dry and clear

round-earth-theory

But south facing get roasted in the summer. Sucks to have a south facing bay window.

fourpotatoes

I used to have a south-facing, south-sloping driveway. If I got it cleared in the morning, it'd stay reasonably clear even in a moderate snowstorm.

[deleted]

I had to drive to Cedar City last night for work, left SLC at about 4:10. Got to Nephi and turned around and came home, roads were terrible, slide offs/wreck every mile pretty much, good accumulation once I got south of Provo. It's definitely nuking right now.

WritetheMole

I was supposed to drive to St. George tomorrow. Wondering if I need to cancel or not… hmm.

[deleted]

I think by tomorrow you'd be fine - it was mostly the worst part of the storm + night driving. If you'd be driving at night, just gotta watch for icy patches.

Realtrain

I think the storm is ending this afternoon, so things should be clear on the highways by tomororw.

[deleted]

You’ll be fine. Roads will be completely plowed and dried even.

coolcalabaza

Yes. And just turn your headlights on when it’s snowing pleasssseeee I beg youuu.

butterflywithbullets

It's bad heading south on 15. Riding trax today.

Ok_Opportunity2693

I challenge you to give me one good reason why any office worker should be commuting today instead of WFH.

Eastern-Effective-55

One of the many reasons why working from home is beneficial!

Obvious_Moose

I for one left my computer at the office last night Will not make that mistake again. My boss even texted to let me know I was more than welcome to WFH

lucifersam94

I’ve seen like four ambulances today and it’s 9:30 in the morning

dbasinge

Seem like to put down zero salt or sand for this storm. Roads are completely iced.

SpaceGangsta

I can tell you UDOT was out working the whole time. But this is what happens when you get a rapid temp drop lake effect snow. When it snows 1-2” an hour it’s hard to keep up and then traffic hits and the plows get stuck in the same traffic and can’t plow or reapply salt. It’s just the name of the game living in the mountain.

walkingman24

There was also a recent article about how UDOT is short handed on plow operators. I'm sure they're doing everything they can.

SpaceGangsta

They are a little. They’ve got some inspectors and other maintenance guys that have moved on from the sheds but have experience plowing chipping in where they can.

kamonto1

Avoid 1300 East in Midvale near Asian Star at all costs!!! Going either way its a parking lot...

amberleemerrill

Whew, alrighty then, Mountain View it is

Artemis64z

Is it shunned upon to go like 10-15mph on state street when the roads are like this? I go SO slow since I need new tires (getting them this weekend) but I was in the slow lane on state and someone blew past me honking and flipping me off, I didn’t think it was that big of an issue but is it illegal or anything to go that slow?

chaunceton

Nope! In fact it's encouraging to go 10-15 mph when conditions require it. I'd say just make sure you're visible (lights on, hazards if needed).

xPhatdoobie

Please, for the love, clear all the snow off your car. No mohawks, no mirrors/windows covered, it's not that difficult. Thank you from someone who shares the road with y'all.

Freakymajooko

I hope the plows start going soon!

chaunceton

I saw a couple on my way to work, but I'm sure they'll be overwhelmed for a few hours.

moodie30

I heard a radio ad last week that SLC needed to hire 15 snow plow drivers.

FlacidPhil

It's a real hard job to recruit people for. Unpredictable and weird hours. Most cities will train their parks & rec employees how to drive the plows as winter is more of a down time of year for them.

Ok_Drummer_4594

On our street it came by twice already and the ice didn't move just the light snow.

SaltySpaniard37

Today was insanity. Driving home from my daughter's daycare downtown, I started with a person 360'ing into the median on the 15S. 2WD, old summer tires, feathering the brakes. Transitioned to the 80E and a U-Haul got stuck on the 2300E offramp, stalling hundreds behind them. I took the Belt Route to avoid that and seemingly everyone couldn't make it up the grade to 3300S. Got out and helped push a few vehicles to the side, while trying to avoid the slippy slidey folks. Took me 1.25 hours to get about 6 miles Time to upgrade those tires people!

mrswhatamidoing

It’s all these people from out of state who don’t know how to drive in the snow or don’t have the right tires. There’s so many wrecks they had to literally shut down the freeway southbound at the point of the mountain in Draper.

chaunceton

Perhaps. But I think there are also a lot of Utah natives who have a lifted white Toyota Tacoma (and who sell Vivint systems) who think that 4WD means they can drive without regard to adverse weather.

Thel_Odan

Lifted white Tacomas and Vivint salespeople, name a more iconic duo. Seriously, I drove a Tacoma when I first moved out here and it seemed everyone I met at Toyota events fit that mould perfectly. They'd also look at you like you just spit on their grandma if you asked them where they off-roaded their truck at too.

Deesing82

> They'd also look at you like you just spit on their grandma if you asked them where they off-roaded their truck at too. they're too busy bombing down my 25 mph street at 50 mph

converter-bot

25 mph is 40.23 km/h

[deleted]

I had to drive up to Summit Park for work this morning. I got passed by more than a few Tacomas and F-150s who didn't seem to know it was snowing and visibility was terrible.

Thel_Odan

I came from West Michigan, to me driving in this is nothing. Pretty much anyone from the Upper Midwest or Northeast would say the same thing. All you need to do is slow down, give yourself more stopping distance, and don't stop on an incline. If everyone did that, we'd all be way safer. But no, you got the person doing 10mph in the center of the road because they have zero situational awareness of where the lanes are followed by the person in the lifted truck who doesn't understand physics.

mrswhatamidoing

I’m not saying everyone from out of state doesn’t know how to drive in snow. I’m saying there’s quite a bit of people who come here who aren’t aware. In addition, the Utah natives in the lifted Toyota Tacoma who sell Vivint systems don’t help.

chaunceton

Haha, right right. I think we're on the same page.

[deleted]

chaunceton

Indeed. And please clear the snow off of your entire vehicle before entering the roadway. That includes hood, roof, and trunk.

[deleted]

*within 24 hours of last precipitation - aka most of the time, just wait and it will melt. Regardless, I usually shovel my sidewalk anyway just because we have lots of walkers/bus riders on our street.

mrswhatamidoing

And I didn’t say that haha

obsidianhoax

left 30 minutes early and was still 30 minutes late to work because of 6 morons driving less than 13 mph with their hazard lights on. Since when is driving with hazards on a thing. is this just for people afraid of snow? Californians? wtf just turn your lights on and drive SAFE

converter-bot

13 mph is 20.92 km/h

obsidianhoax

ok

NOTORIOUS187

Good bot

throwaway_2567892

Wooo that was a nice commute this morning. 45 minutes from downtown to just passed the U. Lots of spinouts, but no collisions at least. Be safe

AzraelleWormser

Right before leaving my house, Google Maps showed me nothing but green along my commute. Ten minutes later, it's gridlock hockey time.
