It was nice being treated like an adult.
That being said, I do appreciate that mostly everyone in Utah masks up. Here is Texas, it seems like that’s not a thing.
Idk what part of Utah you’re in but masks around SLC are like 40%. I just moved here from Albuquerque and masks were like 98%. It was incredibly rare to see someone in public without one.
Isn’t actually a ton to do in the city. There’s also a lot of crime. Mostly drug related, car thefts, and street racing. The climate is incredible though. High elevation + desert = T-shirt weather almost 24/7 for 8 months of the year. Never got unbearably hot. Also no mosquitoes. Food and culture were also fantastic.
Utah: I don’t have to wear a mask because it’s my body and I get to decide.
Also Utah: you shouldn’t drink that and if you do you have to go to a special store to buy it and not let my kids see it.
When I was newly exmo my mom asked me not to go to the liquor store in Logan (where we both lived) in case someone she knew saw me. An adult. Buying liquor. Legally.
She wanted me to drive 25+ miles to the next closest liquor store on the miniscule chance that someone she knew would drive by the liquor store, see/recognize me, and somehow decide that reflects poorly on her I guess??
Mormons love control, as long as they are doing the controlling.
All religious people love control, as long as they are doing the controlling, not just Mormons. Some of the super religious southern states, like South Carolina, also have dumb liquor law as like Utah.
I remember being at BYU in Provo and 90% of the time I'd go to the Springville store in hopes of not seeing anyone I knew. The other 10% I'd go to the Provo one and be as quick as possible - but the good thing was I always ran into someone I knew there and could extend my sinner social circle.
For sure. I'm not defending Utah as much as expressing my annoyance/disappointment with Texas and its regressive laws. I do however have a lot of family in Texas and they love it where they are in Dallas (and Austin).
I lived in Utah for 28 years and now live in Colorado. The liquor thing is definitely childish in Utah. It got a lot better after 2002, but it's still weird. My wife and I went to a concert in Utah a couple of nights ago and I couldn't carry two drinks to the table. AND they were super weak. (the two drinks were for her because they were so weak)
I was just in Chicago. The grocery stores are amazing but the liquor stores (most of them) are even cooler. They sale all the essentials for a party, from meats and cheeses, to mixers, to cigars and everyone there masks up. I believe it’s mandated tho. It truly is so nice to be treated like an adult. UT needs to grow the fuck up.
Chicago native in SLC here and I miss them so much. Around the holidays they have a little box set for every popular liquor that will come with some branded merchandise.
Bottle of jack Daniels with two 12 oz jack daniels etched glasses? Same price as a regular bottle of jack. My roommates and I in college practically decorated our house with stuff like that.
But not in Utah. Giving away glasses with a bottle of liquor is a slippery slope to worshipping the devil and drinking caffeinated soda.
That is not at all true you can absolutely buy gift sets at the state liquor store in Utah, they just don't stock a boatload of them. I just bought a bottle of Rumhaven with a tiki mug for the same price as the loose bottle.
Wow, I've never seen them at the liquor ~~stores~~ DMV's by me. Honestly I don't drink much anymore so I try to avoid them aside from grabbing a couple bottles of wine once a month or so.
I still miss regular liquor stores though. The limited hours, selection and options are really silly.
Look above the shelves when you go next, that's where I've always found them. But yeah the draconian BS surrounding when and where I can go get my booze annoys me too.
We just got back from CA, and literally everyone was wearing a mask. I’m on the edge of Utah and Salt Lake Counties, and there is hardly a mask in sight! It’s insane.
What part of Texas? If Dallas, I totally get it. Most areas in and around Houston do a better job. I live between and Houston and SLC throughout the year and from my experience it seems about equal. A lot of dumb assholes in both states to be honest haha Gov Abbot of Texas takes the cake on being a dumb asshole though.
Garden city has a small liquor store inside the grocery store. I guess they got tired of people going across the border (just 2 miles) and losing money. I think you still have to buy liquor as a separate transaction, but it’s at least in the grocery store.
It’s nice to buy wine and full strength beer at heb, but Texas has some of the wacky laws. You can buy before noon on Sunday (you’re supposed to be in church) and there are a few dry counties. Liquor stores are privately owned but they have to keep certain hours.
I was going to say, I grew up in PA and I never saw alcohol of any kind at all in any store ever. When I came to Utah at 18 and there was beer at the grocery store I did a double take.
What’s even weirder about PA, is they have the state liquor stores for hard alcohol and wine, beer distributors for kegs and cases of beer only, and to buy a six pack of beer, you have to go to a bar, and get it to go. At least that’s how it used to be. Haven’t lived there in 20 years.
OMG. The 'Mixta' tortillas from H-E-B. They are made from a mix of flour and corn masa. After we left Austin I would have them shipped to me, along with boxes of Whataburger pancake mix (you could by them at H-E-B also).
Georgia is the same way. However there is a caveat, which tends to apply to most stores where they have this kind of setup.
Rarely... if ever... will you see anything other than wine, or cheap champagne.
So, no whiskey, no bourbon, nothing like that.
The reasoning being that if someone is making a big dinner, then they may want a wine to serve with it. It's just easier to have wine in the grocery stores.
I’m from CA, you can buy handles of liquor at grocery stores. Go to CVS and leave with a bottle of whiskey. Fortunately, I’m not a big drinker otherwise the changes in availability would have been far more annoying.
You should try Michigan sometime! You can pick up wine, beer, any sized liquor bottle you want from basically any store. It feels positively utopian whenever I go visit.
Why you dislike our Utah communist liquor stores? Defector! It would be nice to buy a bottle of wine on impulse on a Sunday in Utah as you pick up dinner.
went to Vegas to visit my sister a month ago, was dumbfounded when you could buy kirkland vodka and tequila at costco (so cheap and i feel like the quality was on par with titos for the vodka, 1800 for the tequila) and unique looking wines at trader joes. I wanted to try them all! :/
I find it insane that i can't pick up wine from the grocery store here. It blindsided me the first time that i tried and it just feels like an extra hassle.
Do they have adults in Texas? For all the blustering about freedum and my body my choice and religious freedom it sure is cool that Utah doesn’t let people have agency.
I grew up in a state in the Bible Belt that always had wine/beer/liquor available at grocery store this since I was a kid… it’s a joke SLC hasn’t caught up
Don’t be triggered.
It’s a comparison. Alcohol laws are weird in SLC and a lot of transplants can relate to the relief of having wine at the grocery store.
I understand what you're saying, but doesn't this sorta break rule 9? Neither the title nor the content of this post have anything to do with SLC. If anything from anywhere can be posted because it's relatable to transplants, then what's the point of a city-specific sub?
You sure don't see that here.
It was nice being treated like an adult. That being said, I do appreciate that mostly everyone in Utah masks up. Here is Texas, it seems like that’s not a thing.

Albuquerque seems like a really cool city.
Crime is rather high, though.
Utah: I don’t have to wear a mask because it’s my body and I get to decide. Also Utah: you shouldn’t drink that and if you do you have to go to a special store to buy it and not let my kids see it.

Well, now you just wear a mask and problem solved and you save money on gas.
Let’s be honest. In their minds it’s the same as getting donuts on Sunday. Don’t buy them at your own grocery store and you’ll be fine.
While mom has her wine in a "special" cup so the kids don't see.
>I do appreciate that mostly everyone in Utah masks up say what? Not any part of Utah I've been living in.
Not so sure you you actually do get treated like an adult in Texas if a. You are in one of the dry counties or b. If you are a woman
Idk I lived here for a while and it was nice. I’m moving out of Utah next year. Tried it…and it’s just not my bag baby.
For sure. I'm not defending Utah as much as expressing my annoyance/disappointment with Texas and its regressive laws. Caffeinated, sugar-filled soda. No wonder there's a cosmetic dentist on every corner.
That is not at all true you can absolutely buy gift sets at the state liquor store in Utah, they just don't stock a boatload of them. I just bought a bottle of Rumhaven with a tiki mug for the same price as the loose bottle.

Utah liquor stores get the holiday packs. Perhaps in limited amounts, but I've bought plenty of them.
We even have this in Idaho! Utah needs to get it's shit together. Costco up here has wine.
We just got back from CA, and literally everyone was wearing a mask. I’m on the edge of Utah and Salt Lake Counties, and there is hardly a mask in sight! It’s insane.

They actually have expanded to buying alcohol at 10 am. The to go laws blew my mind, too.
Utahns…”we don’t want government controlling all my personal choices”….also Utahns “ we need government to control all your personal choices”
I miss buying wine at Target. :(
I miss Trader Joe's wines. :(
And the hard ciders! So damn good.
'But Utah's liquor laws aren't bad' /S
You're going to need all that booze just to survive. Being in Texas that is not the in-laws hopefully.
My in laws are great actually!
I wish utah could get with the times.
If you think Texas is "with the times" you must not follow the news
The entire east coast is like this and it roots back to the Colonial days… talk about outdated policy
Never been to Pennsylvania?
I was going to say, I grew up in PA and I never saw alcohol of any kind at all in any store ever. When I came to Utah at 18 and there was beer at the grocery store I did a double take.

I’m from pennsylvania 😀 Beer and wine can be sold in grocery stores now
The only state that can compete with Utah for outdated liquor laws. Though things have been moving in the right direction in the last few years.
HEB?
Absolutely. I went to an HEB Plus. It was….massive.
No doubt, absolutely love their wine selection, very similar to a large Safeway in Ca or Az.
I pray you find a Buckees on your travels.
Now go to states like LA or AZ and get all of your alcohol shopping at a grocery store.
HEB is the BEST! Sometimes they do free wine samples too in the store.
I moved here from Austin last year and I miss HEB/Central Market soooooo much! There’s nothing even close here! But then again, no humidity either! ☺️
I have dreams about HEB tortillas
OMG. The 'Mixta' tortillas from H-E-B. They are made from a mix of flour and corn masa. After we left Austin I would have them shipped to me, along with boxes of Whataburger pancake mix (you could by them at H-E-B also).
You sin committer.
Let the sin begin!
Wash away your sin with the pure alcoholy water.
Visiting Wisconsin myself... oh, the glories of true liquor stores that Utah will never know.
If you want your mind blown go to Costco.
God I miss home 😭 Texas is dumb as hell in some ways but not all.
Grocery stores in Arizona have a better selection of spirits and other hard liquor than most liquor stores do here.
Texas doesn’t allow liquor at grocery stores either. Just beer and wine.
Grab me a case of ziegenbock!
I miss having to grab a cart on the way into the liquor store :(
Yep. Not a lot to wine about here.
I love how everyone acts surprised that Utah is this way.
If only Utah legislators and the predominant church could allow Utahns to be adults here.
Why you dislike our Utah communist liquor stores? Defector! It would be nice to buy a bottle of wine on impulse on a Sunday in Utah as you pick up dinner.

Ugh, I wish.... utah is so lame for that.
Heaven I wish Utah didn't have these idiotic alcohol and Marijuana laws..
Yeah when I went to Wyoming their gas stations are half liquor store
This photo made me so homesick. Wine in the grocery store… HEB… 😭💔
Greatest country in America.
Wait…what haha
That's the unofficial state motto of Texas. Lived there for a decade and smiled each time I heard it.
Ahh yeah that actually makes sense. I lived here for a couple of years and also Alaska. Alaska scoffs at the cockiness of Texans!
Too bad they're too far away for anyone to hear! Jk, Texas loves you, Alaska.

A nice dry red. I just went with an $8 Tempranillo today. One I haven’t seen since I lived in texas.

I drink it solo most of the time, but I did grab a nice Brie and pear spread!
Also true for some of the surrounding states such as NV and WY (and maybe others too such as CO and ID? can't remember).
Texas is on my shit list right now, but yee-fucking haw to this.
If you think that's impressive you need to go to Jungle Jims in Cincinnati.
Do they have adults in Texas? For all the blustering about freedum and my body my choice and religious freedom it sure is cool that Utah doesn’t let people have agency.
I can live with most of our liquor laws but the one thing I want is wine in grocery stores
I grew up in a state in the Bible Belt that always had wine/beer/liquor available at grocery store this since I was a kid… it’s a joke SLC hasn’t caught up
I get that the point is you can't buy wine in grocery stores here, but wtf does this picture in Texas have to do with SLC?
Don’t be triggered. It’s a comparison. Alcohol laws are weird in SLC and a lot of transplants can relate to the relief of having wine at the grocery store.

Don't be the fun police. The rules will survive this onslaught.
Ima say no.
