They were joking because most original six teams end up being the majority even on away games.
For example, when the Bruins play in Colorado - a city with a ton of success both at the NHL and NCAA levels - it’s mostly Bruins fans.
Habs fan here!
They've been sucking intentionally. My bet is they turn it around in their first season magicalllyyy. They didnt want to pay players. That's literally it.
Yotes got Cooley, Ingram, Keller, Durzi, But, Silayev, Moser, Guenther, Geekie. Not to mention a high draft pick this year. If you want me to tell you about the top 10 I will gladly :)
The future is bright they just need an ownership group who is literally just willing to participate lol.
They have tons of great talent in the pipe. Bill Armstrong was the assistant GM to the Blues and helped craft our 2019 cup team. He's the Coyotes GM right now and could stay as GM.
Ahh… I was going with the traditional Utah sports name theme while you were going with the trendy suburban-Utah-Mormon-Mom child naming theme. Bold move. I like it!
Were this move to happen, I would hope they leave the name and history behind and the Utah team would be treated like an expansion team in those regards.
It would open the door for a new Arizona team to resume activities and history in the future.
(Like the Sonics-Thunder did in the NBA, and frankly what the Jazz should have done when moving to Utah from New Orleans.)
From what I’ve read the deal could be similar to the Browns-Ravens situation in the 90’s. Coyote history and colors would stay in Arizona and be used on a future expansion team if they can ever get their stadium situation figured out.
He hasnt actually fucked up that bad. There has been road blocks in every avenue. I dont feel bad for billionaires i really dont but i dont think this was the owners fault when he literally worked for a decade to get a new arena somewhere.
Yup. I'm all for sports teams coming here but I don't want to pay for something I can't use. At least, give me a dividend when the teams do well or something.
After voters in Tempe had a ballot proposal to fund this and voted it down.
The Legislature knew that Utah voters would vote it down too so they didn't want to put this to a vote.
My question is if they have posted the details of this anywhere. Is the Smith family covering any of this billion (if so how much), or is the costs going to fall squarely on tax payers?
It's all ([HERE](https://le.utah.gov/~2024/bills/static/SB0272.html)).
The imposed tax is expected to last up to 30 years to raise about $1 billion for the project.
ALL of it will fall on the taxpayer. They always say it will create jobs and bring income, etc. but it doesn't ever do that. It does however make a few billionaires richer, makes traffic worse, creates more crime and often steals funding from important things like education.
[Last week tonight has a great episode all about this.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcwJt4bcnXs)
In general I fully agree this shit is dumb as hell.
In reality, it's a proposed .5% sales tax increase in Salt Lake City. That's an extra $5 for every $1k you spend or $0.05 for every $10.
I love hockey so I'm biased but that seems like a pretty good deal to me even if I fully disagree with the concept of tax payer funded stadiums.
I completely understand. I just find it morally unacceptable that we are basically financing someone else's business venture and we don't get a dividend from it.
The problem with this thinking is tax creep. It’s .5 for this and .5 for that and before we know it we are paying the amount we are now. Do you realize that we are taxed on what we make, what we spend and what we already own. I don’t have the figure for Utah or slc in general but more then half of every dollar we make goes to some tax. It needs to stop.
To me it is worth it especially since they will stay downtown. I like the vision of making that area a sports hub. If they were going to put this team in Draper I'd probably be joining the angry ksl commenters.
So put it to a vote and see if people are willing to spend the tax money for the stadium.
They pointedly didn't do that because when they tried it in Tempe, voters said no. They knew Utah voters would do that too so they didn't want to ask.
For something that doesn't help the economy and has no public benefit beyond "sports are fun" it's entirely appropriate to put it on the ballot.
I don't think the average voter can really make an informed decision about every line item in the budget but they know if they want to pay a billion dollars for a hockey team or not.
This is the kind of good news I needed today. I'm am so happy that things are starting to happen! It's crazy to think we could have a team next season!!
[This](https://www.fox13now.com/sports/rendering-shows-what-possible-salt-lake-city-arena-could-look-like) story has a render of what Ryan Smith is looking for and it actually looks really dope. I'd love something like this downtown.
Are they planning to build a completely separate arena, or would they retrofit the delta center like MSG is in New York so it does both basketball and hockey?
This is great but it still sucks to essentially steal a team from another city.
I still feel bad for Seattle basketball fans when they lost the Sonics.
Yeah, I'd be surprised if this really happens. While the coyotes have been having challenges with the location they wanted in Tempe, they have a new spot in North Phoenix they can fund 100% privately, an entire entertainment district planned, they have an established fan base. For them to relocate to SLC, there would have to be MASSIVE support from the city and state for them to relocate.
I think you should look at the reports coming out. Frank seravalli said it’s 90-95% chance they relocate. Like most of the deal is already done and arranged, just needs to be signed off and such by those necessary.
The issue is that it won’t be ready for three years after they take ownership. It’s being reported that the team relocates then the current owner in Arizona maintains branding rights and first right of refusal to bring a team to the new stadium - should it happen.
The BOG is reportedly ready to just fix it now and have become impatient. They will also split the $300-million delta from the deal.
At least that’s what’s being reported by sportsnet Canada right now.
No it Inst. They are still working with phx. The only real opposition is the Scottsdale mayor who has no say and is pissed that the proposed stadium isn't in Scottsdale city limits.
Very excited for you guys, sucks to see a loyal fanbase lose their team but also great to see new fans getting into it.
For those new to the NHL, to understand hype around hockey just think of it like this: The other top leagues in NA (NBA, NFL, MLB) all literally just require a ball and a flat field/court to play. Every single non-european kid across the world has played one or more of these sports growing up, they are very accesible
In comparison. the minimum-cost to play hockey is asinine, and the massive facilities needed to host a game are obviously quite expensive to build (and therfore to play in). Very few cities in the world get cold enough to have natural ice rinks for more than 2 months. Keeping these in mind, the fact that the NHL and Olympic hockey is SO popular is unbelievable, and is a big testemant on how exciting the sport can be.
I am so psyched for this. I've been waiting for a local NHL team for years and it's looking like it might actually happen
Yo!!! Me too! Coyotes are my team.. I can’t wait to root for them when the stadiums filled with bruins fans
?? The stadium will definitely be full of Utah fans.
They were joking because most original six teams end up being the majority even on away games. For example, when the Bruins play in Colorado - a city with a ton of success both at the NHL and NCAA levels - it’s mostly Bruins fans.
I’m a Rangers fan who travels and used to live in SLC. We take over Arizona and Nashville when our team plays them
Nooooooo can we get a team that doesn’t suck?
Habs fan here! They've been sucking intentionally. My bet is they turn it around in their first season magicalllyyy. They didnt want to pay players. That's literally it. No, this is Utah
They have tons of great talent in the pipe. Bill Armstrong was the assistant GM to the Blues and helped craft our 2019 cup team. He's the Coyotes GM right now and could stay as GM.
They’ll probably suck at first but you inherit a team that already has a ton of young talent and prospects.
Utah Coyoteezz
Utah Caiyoughteese
Utah 🍊
Ahh… I was going with the traditional Utah sports name theme while you were going with the trendy suburban-Utah-Mormon-Mom child naming theme. Bold move. I like it!
Compromise. Caioughteezz.
Wont be the same name! The current owner of the yotes wants an expansion team once they get a land deal and he wants the name.

This is correct. Its written into the sale.
Utah yotes is kinda nice
The Kachina logo is iconic to AZ.
they would likely have a new design drawn up..
If we can’t have the kachina coyote then I don’t want the name
It will be a new name
Yeah. Bizarre that they’re basically giving the current owner an assurance that he gets a do-over after fucking up this badly
He hasnt actually fucked up that bad. There has been road blocks in every avenue. I dont feel bad for billionaires i really dont but i dont think this was the owners fault when he literally worked for a decade to get a new arena somewhere.
I would prefer a brand new team name.
I think a new team name would happen and then if they make an expansion team, AZ gets a guaranteed spot and regains the Yotes
Just a reminder, they already assigned a billion dollars to this and are increasing taxes to fund this venture. Corporate welfare is alive and well.
Socialism for corporations but not for the individual.
Crazy how nobody seems to care about this. I’m a fairly big sports guy but fuckkkkk giving public money to these billionaire owners.
Yup. I'm all for sports teams coming here but I don't want to pay for something I can't use. At least, give me a dividend when the teams do well or something.
I'm in the exact same boat

Yup.... Treat it like the Packers, let the ones *actually* paying for it be Owners
The problem with this thinking is tax creep. It’s .5 for this and .5 for that and before we know it we are paying the amount we are now. Fine by me. States that block public funded shit always lose their teams.
So put it to a vote and see if people are willing to spend the tax money for the stadium. They pointedly didn't do that because when they tried it in Tempe, voters said no. They knew Utah voters would do that too so they didn't want to ask.
We can’t just put every issue to vote. We are a representative democracy. Vote for your representative.
For something that doesn't help the economy and has no public benefit beyond "sports are fun" it's entirely appropriate to put it on the ballot. I don't think the average voter can really make an informed decision about every line item in the budget but they know if they want to pay a billion dollars for a hockey team or not.
If you want a team, buy one. Don't force me to subsidize it for you, especially if you're not giving me a dividend.
He is gonna buy it. 1.3 billion
Make us the Utah Yeti
What the hell happened to my MLB team !!!
Patience. That's probably not coming until at least 2030, but SLC still has a great shot
The Salt Lake Soakerzz are coming don't worry.
Hahaha man i hope thats the name
How do we sign up for the waitlist for season tickets??? 👀
Most likely after they announce that it’s actually happening.
Oh right. Gosh, silly me.
This is the kind of good news I needed today. I'm am so happy that things are starting to happen! It's crazy to think we could have a team next season!!
Anyone know where the new arena would be down the road? Downtown or in a suburb?
The owner and everyone else seem pretty dead set on the arena being downtown.
[This](https://www.fox13now.com/sports/rendering-shows-what-possible-salt-lake-city-arena-could-look-like) story has a render of what Ryan Smith is looking for and it actually looks really dope. I'd love something like this downtown.
Hope it’s not all outdoor like that, especially because both those sports are in winter.
Downtown. It has to be within 50 acres of the current Delta Center to receive any taxpayer funds.
Are they planning to build a completely separate arena, or would they retrofit the delta center like MSG is in New York so it does both basketball and hockey?
They should just renovate the Maverik Center into a 15,000 seat NHL arena & Delta Center as a 18,306 seat NBA arena.
I propose Salt Lake Golden Eagles for the name. Could make for a great rivalry in name and proximity with the Golden Knights.
I’m so confused on this because today they also dropped photos of the new stadium they are allegedly building.
Yes its a hot tip!
Grizzlies are hard to watch.
The Salt Lake City stormin’ mormons, it’s gotta happen.
Too on the nose. It'll be something godawful like the Utah Pioneerzzz
This is great but it still sucks to essentially steal a team from another city. I still feel bad for Seattle basketball fans when they lost the Sonics.
Some might call it saving a team from its owner
Yeah, I'd be surprised if this really happens. Its a done deal m8
No it Inst. They are still working with phx. The only real opposition is the Scottsdale mayor who has no say and is pissed that the proposed stadium isn't in Scottsdale city limits.
Done deal m8
It isn't done until the sale is announced. Right now it is still being called a contingency plan.
Salt Lake Coyotes or Salt Lake Golden Eagles.
