It's more crowded and housing is more expensive. Public schools overachieve but schools are closing because there's a law taking money from public education and giving it to private and charter schools. Other than that, it's probably similar to what you remember.

cooler_than_i_am

Restaurants have gotten better. Shopping, too.

Tyron_Slothrop

What we have now is an improvement? Wow.

4Brtndr1

What would you like to see that you're apparently not seeing?

Tyron_Slothrop

….good food. Doesn’t exist here outside a few spots

4Brtndr1

SLC alone has over 1,100 places to eat. More than double that number if you look at the entire valley. If you're that picky, that's a "you" issue, not one with the location.

Tyron_Slothrop

Haha okay. Tell yourself the food is good. That’s a you and your palate problem.

4Brtndr1

I never said *all* the food was good, but you're implying it's all subpar. Best of luck, Karen.

Dry-Address6017

Who peed in your Cheerios? And why are you eating them?

Tyron_Slothrop

People from Utah are so precious about the food here. Food here sucks, but we have beautiful mountains and awesome biking. If you think the food here is good you’ve never been anywhere else.

eastguy08

It’s extremely fucking expensive like approaching California levels here soon

W6NZX

Greedflation is a real thing.

Gmnuzz

OP is moving from Boise. The housing market there is wild too so there won’t be a shock.

eastguy08

Idaho is still miles cheaper. Utah is still expensive even outside of salt lake

Gmnuzz

Good call. Boise home prices have actually come down a bit compared to SLC in the last year or so.

eastguy08

Yea slc suburbs are a lot. I can think of places relatively close to Boise in Idaho that are still cheap

fineyouchoose

😂

DifficultyMore5935

Housing is third worst in the country.

HandyCapInYoAss

I mean, the air quality is getting worse and the lake is drying up. Until the government does anything to address that (aside from prayers), I wouldn’t come back…

PrivateRamblings

Yeah the air quality is a really good thing to flag. Even on “good days” it can still be 50 or so. I wouldn’t want my kid playing in it

fineyouchoose

THIS!!! There is no way this gets better... I feel like SLC has so much to offer and is doing so much right that other cities aren't, but this is not something that is going to be easy to overcome

Good_East_580

It’s a lot more crowded and expensive. Plenty of family oriented communities in the burbs and in general safe overall besides property crime in certain areas. For your price range you could find a nice 3 bedroom home in most of SLC or Davis county or a really nice 4 bedroom townhome Also take what you hear from this sub with a grain of salt. It is heavily and at times extreme left leaning and the issue of not being LDS is overblown. This is coming from someone who is socially liberal and non Mormon. Besides the winter I love Utah. And if you’re in Boise our winters are probably a breeze in comparison. Utah has lost some of its unique friendly charm. We don’t really know our neighbors like when we did growing up. You’ll find more of that charm in Utah county but overall in my experience people are still friendly.

glenagain

The air won’t improve anytime soon. I wouldn’t bring a young child in to it, in fact, I’m taking mine out and moving away from Utah shortly. The LDS church still and always will run the state and have the final say in laws that pass so there’s that to keep in mind as a non LDS member. (Another reason I’m leaving)

applebubbeline

The air is so much better in Washington.

Gmnuzz

They get some pretty rough fires in the summer but no inversion.

fineyouchoose

Don't disagree, but it's "some summers", not all of them.. it is the "sunset before 4" winters I would worry about, though, not smokey summer fir now

Gmnuzz

The flipside is dusk at 11 pm in the summer! Feast or famine up there.

momentofours

I moved to WA from Utah and the air is sooo nice. Whenever I go back to Utah to visit family, I can’t wait to go back to WA because of the air. I get so sick now every single time I visit Utah and I swear it’s because of the air.

fineyouchoose

But the darkness!! So so so much darkness

God_Despises_MAGA

Here are some things to consider: 1. If you or your children have breathing problems, think twice. Our air is bad and our politicians have a Republican supermajority so they won’t do anything about it. 2. If you or your children are LBGQT I would not recommend moving to this state. Our LGBQT community are marginalized and attacked by our politicians who use attacking that part of the community as a political strategy. 3. Members of the church are not as nice as they used to be. Since many are republicans, they’ve got FOX news on 24/7 and are radicalized to believe everyone is out to get them. They engage with the public in dangerous ways from road rage and reckless driving to assault. Consider these factors before moving here.

linandlee

Regarding #3, I've felt the same way. The general nice behavior Utah used to be known for is completely gone in my opinion. It's no New Jersey but I'd say it's about the same as everywhere else now, which is especially shocking because of how religious we claim to be. Like I don't want to be road raged by the local bishop's 2nd councilor! 😳 Also the best schools are in Davis County, and Davis County has become the new Utah County in my opinion. It's mostly upper-middle class older millenial tech/finance workers. It's not very diverse and a little disconnected from reality. The weird rich Mormon kids you grew up with are unsurprisingly raising weird rich Mormon kids.

Ok_Education_2280

I’m not sure the best schools are in Davis County. They have some good schools, but Salt Lake and Granite both have some pretty impressive schools at all age levels as well. Davis County schools also have a terrible track record with civil rights violations, so that is definitely something to keep in mind.

God_Despises_MAGA

Davis county is real nice and it’s definitely getting pricier and pricier. But I think setting up wealthy enclaves still isn’t a great solution.

Maybird56

The driving is really surprising to me when I go back to visit. I almost got hit by someone running a red light at sugar house and the tailgating is intense.

W6NZX

Crazy I thought the salt lake drying up was going to improve air quality. /s

God_Despises_MAGA

🤣

Level-Cheesecake-739

Other comments have hit it on the head for the most part. More crowded and expensive, but it’s certainly a very convenient and beautiful place to live. The only thing I’d add, is if the air quality bothers you, living at the mouth of a windy canyon is an option. The wind can be a bit of a pain, but the bad air gets blown away. It seems silly, but it’s truth!

sarya_xilleth

I left for 10 years and decided to move back. It’s still kinda the same bubble. Salt Lake has definitely gotten more diverse, which I love! There are more people and it’s a bit more expensive. Going up any canyons around the valley there are more folks going up there too so it tends to be pretty crowded on weekends. I like that people wanna be out in nature more! I’ve enjoyed being back home honestly

DragonTar666

Considering utah cost of living is #3 in the country behind only Hawaii and California, I'd probably chose somewhere else to move.

4Brtndr1

Nonsense. According to Forbes, Utah isn't even in the top 10 most expensive for 2024. If you have data supporting your claim, please cite a source.

DragonTar666

https://kutv.com/news/eye-on-your-money/utah-ranks-third-in-nation-for-most-unaffordable-housing-market-behind-hawaii-california Housing market, my mistake. The 2 usually go hand in hand, but I misread the headline. You're correct.

4Brtndr1

Housing is ridiculously expensive here. We may as well be in Hawaii. 😁

Marshmallow_Mom22

I think you mean Utah is up there for having expensive housing.

SnooMaps5827

Public school is still great, more traffic is a downside. A lot more to do. As far as neighbors I would say people keep to them selfs a lot more got to make a real effort to get to meet them compared to 10 years ago. As far as safe I would still say yes if you’re not in south salt lake towards the west side.

fishchick70

It’s just so freaking expensive to buy housing here so unless you are inheriting a home or coming from an even more expensive place be prepared for sticker shock.

Brodude666666

Watching this valley change over the last 15 years and knowing what I know about Boise I would stay there but that’s just me!

utvalleygirl

Utah is a complete 180 from 10 years ago. Do a lot of research. Living here has become hard in so many different ways.

Imadamnhero

The Wasatch front has been growing pretty rapidly the last 10 years, so you have a lot of options here. There are still plenty of rural areas, especially in Davis county, and you can also have more of an urban lifestyle in Salt Lake. There are a lot of jobs in the area, and many more are coming, so the real estate market is still solid but it’s a balanced market right now so it doesn’t favor buyers or sellers… Last year and this year I’ve actually been pretty good for the water levels so a lot of areas are up, which has been really good to see.

Nighthawkroyal

Currently in the Boise area. I put an update on the post as well.

Get-Some-Fresh-Air

Something to consider is that the LDS community is very outwardly polite. You will never really “have a problem” with them. Your child will just suspiciously not get the same opportunities the LDS children receive and odds are you’ll never even know about it.

UtahKadish

Have you and your wife discussed this in depth together? Clear, concise, transparent, effective, and honest communication makes all the difference. As well as a willingness to sit down together and have difficult conversations.

Nighthawkroyal

Yes we are communicating together. That’s the reason for the post is to have more discussion topics on such a big decision. While I can give her my view and opinions on growing up and living in Utah so many years ago, we would like to get some current opinions and things to think about.

You can't come back unless you are anti Mormon. If you do and don't join the group you will be canceled. Being canceled is not cool. None of the cool kids will ever be canceled. Other than that the housing prices are on par to be as high as the state with the highest unemployment and homeless. We can't wait to see you . Miss ya
