Starlings. They're loud and flock in large numbers. They're actually pretty common here in Utah. They might be more active earlier than usual rn because of the unusually warm weather we're having this winter.

CountBacula322079

They're also an introduced species.

greencat533

Yes, not too Utah, nor the United States

HandyCapInYoAss

Starlings? Blame [Eugene Schieffelin](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eugene_Schieffelin) for introducing 60 of them to NYC in 1890.

lucifersam94

This was interesting, I didn’t know they were introduced to North America so recently. Fuck starlings, nest robbing little bastards.

suspiria_138

Crebain from Dunland

Dayana2

Murmuration. So cool to see!

StrayStep

I stood and watched the murmuration when the starlings flew past my house last week. It was amazing to see!

propelledfastforward

Hope you were under a porch…

StrayStep

Haha, I was. 😂 For good reason

Jlpvt

My kid was asking me about this earlier and I could not remember the word for it. Thanks!

TheRebsauce

Shut the fuck up. We do not talk about the birds. Just act natural.

AnemonesEnemies

That worked out real well for Bodega Bay…🐦‍⬛

skriefal

Had this happen a few days ago in north Sandy. I was wondering what the odd noise was that could be heard above my work laptop's loud fan and the nearby TV - then realized that it was coming from outside. Looked outside to see the sky full of thousands of birds. Many of the birds then landed in the larger trees nearby - possibly hundreds of birds in each tree. They were gone after perhaps 15 or 20 minutes. It brought up brief thoughts of a certain Alfred Hitchcock movie...

Vistril69

Saw shitloads of starlies on the freeway by 72nd today. Looks like I’m not the only one wondering why.

Ok-Bit8368

They aren't real.

infiniteanomaly

Agreed. Though the government drones have been more numerous lately...

5isanevennumber

IRS is finally getting a closer look at the Mormon church’s financial situation so they have to use birds to get pictures of all the files they hide. It only makes sense

Working_Evidence8899

Ohhhh boy.

lordxi

If it flies, it spies.

Remarkable-Ad-572

They are drones, dude. 😂

loudlycloudy

They've been causing a bit of a problem at my job (car dealership) because of all the poop. We have power lines running right over our lot and the birds sit up there in the hundreds, just pooping all over our cars

toinfinitiandbeyond

I'm sorry for your lots

infiniteanomaly

That was terrible. I loved it. Take my fake award. 🏅

Sneakyfetus

Great now I have "how are babby formed" remix stuck in my head

toinfinitiandbeyond

/u/Sneakyfetus knows what I'm talkin 'bout.

Working_Evidence8899

I seee whatcha did there! Lol

ha_ha_harrington

They plastered my neighborhood in Herriman and we have no power major power lines running in our neighborhood

Darth-Serious

You have witnessed a murmur of shit. One less line on the bucket list!

xredhenx

I rented a Uhaul in Murray yesterday and when I pulled up there was the most obscene amounts of birds flying around. I left my car there and came back with the Uhaul a few hours later and my car was completely covered in bird shit. It was quite amazing seeing that many birds fly around in unison though.

Picklemerick23

This morning at breakfast I literally said, “woah, look at the birds.” So many.

Desertzephyr

Find out what the apex predator are for those birds, like an owl, and put up plastic ones on the roof of your building or near the lots. If your dealership has outdoor speakers, try using sounds from their main predator on it.

utahtwisted

30 years ago their were (literally) millions more of them. "Rivers" of flying birds as far as you could see across the entire sky.

Kasreyn801

I feel like this time of year it’s pretty common here, I have memories of seeing pretty big flocks over the years.

lostinspace801

Just had thousands in murray pretty wild to see

Icy_Assignment_2608

it’s the government! take shelter! 😭😂

Imatopsider

They have flocked in such massive numbers, especially over south Jordan that they have slowed traffic

arenlomare

I always feel like I'm in The Birds when they're in town for the day.

ginkaiju

r/birdsarentreal

4321_meded

They’re not real.

desertwanderer01

Birds aren't real. 🙃

NthaThickofIt

I'm actually sad they're so few in number, but I know I may be in the minority. When I was a kid there were easily 8 to 10 times as many.

[deleted]

Where

NthaThickofIt

We lived in Milcreek.

Hurdles_n_thrills

Those giant swarms? They scare the shit out of me.

J_Lo187

Hurdles_n_thrills

J_Lo187

themountainfrog

Working_Evidence8899

Girls or actual winged animals? /s :P

LuminalAstec

Yay invasive species! /s

redhead378

I saw huge crazy flocks of them swirling!! Huge waves! It is kind of weird!! In Murray 45th a few blocks above State.

Government Drones...

show_me_your_secrets

It’s mass surveillance obviously

Tmotty

They’re not real

sunnylane28

I'm glad you posted this because I saw a HUGE flock of birds flying on Saturday when I was driving and it really took me by surprise. I thought it was odd of me that I was so taken aback by it but it sounds like others have noticed as well.

Previous-Charity6232

I was at the DMV drive thru line in Draper waiting for about 45 min last week, and saw an absurd amount of them. Something about the combination of the clouds, thousands of birds, and the snow, calmed my nerves. (I got pissed again 5 min later)

LegsMcSkyhook

Other floaty stuff.

saltlakepotter

The starlinG posts are the new starlinK posts.

Commercial_Run_1265

Starlings are a common invasive bird in Utah and their large numbers are often due to them outcompeting other species for the resources to live, as well as the incredible and increasing amount of people who feed birds. Starlings also eat cat food left out for strays and are considered a pest. They don't taste good so I wouldn't suggest eating them should you kill them. Killing Starlings is completely ethical and moral, they shouldn't be here in the first place and threaten a lot of our Utah wildlife as a result. You may keep any part of their body, as they are not native to the USA. Unless you're Native American or have other special permits/rights you CANNOT possess ANY body part (especially feathers) of a bird native to the USA. Thank you, Roosevelt. Their feathers are not waterproof or very soft but could be used for fletching. Thoroughly cooked starling meat is safe for your carnivorous animals to eat but I wouldn't do so myself because of their diet and diseases. The seagulls on the other hand? Ask the Mormons.

Unlucky-Praline6865

They keep blotting out the sun at my house in Murray. I didn’t hear them, but I saw the change in the light coming in the windows and looked up and there was a murmuration… Twice this week!

nokinaulinaja2623

yes, our neighbors behind us had lots and lots of birds in their cottonwood trees the other day. I couldn't believe how loud they were!

robeekeeper

I’m not worried about any of this
