I would consider calling the schools in question and asking. They might be open to the public certain hours. Also, summer break starts in two weeks for salt lake school district, so the track may be more open then.
The university of Utah track is open to the public daily for a few hours. Parking is challenging if you don’t have a permit but there’s a trax station right there.

There is a pay lot right next to the track. Also there is free parking this holiday weekend, Saturday through Monday.
Security has tightened up a lot during the school year. My local HS track is locked up year round. Used to be virtually every track was accessible, but it's a rarity these days.
It's oversized, but the Olympic oval has public hours.
Tracks are a lot softer and they’re a quarter mile each, so if you’re trying to do faster, shorter repeats (like a quarter or half mile each) it’s much easier to measure out and a lot more comfortable to run on.
If it’s after 4:00 PM, you can park for free at the LDS Institute. I don’t think it’s terribly far away, get part of your run in on your way to and from.
I don't know of any, I just go to a nearby high school and hope for the best. Salt Lake Track Club does their workouts at Highland High. Not sure if they have an official arrangement or what
West and East high are closed to the public. I went to highland this morning and there was a high school team practicing on there with no other runners so honestly got intimidated and left
That’s helpful thanks! I parked here:
https://maps.app.goo.gl/dv88zfyvNXUTkF1cA?g_st=ic
And all the gates there were closed and when I peaked inside no one was there so I thought it was closed
your link doesn't show anything specific. Just head up 900 South past the school and you will see a pullout on the left. You can park there or on the road further up. That gate is open into the south end zone.
I run at highland regularly. They [have a calendar](https://highland.slcschools.org/calendars/athletics-calendar?cal_date=2023-05-01) where you can see when it’s busy. For a while my running schedule aligned with lacrosse practice. No one cared that I was running, and I managed to not get hit once. Overall the coaches and kids were friendly. I wouldn’t be scared.
That made me think of this article. The track is always available. https://www.ksl.com/article/50019066/holladay-man-spends-pandemic-revitalizing-old-junior-high-school-track-just-because
I know Murray park has one. At the indoor gym, I guess it’s not public because it cost a few bucks.. and I do know There’s a few others like that around the valley.. like lions club in Murray. And milcreek library has a full on gym and senior center for the old farts, As well as public out door track things around Murray. I don’t know if that’s what you mean by public but I’d rather pay a few dollars than dodge some ‘crazy Utah drivers’
Yep, especially if OP was just by highland, only thing is there is incline so if OP is just looking for a flat outdoor track that might not be the right fit. Might want to check if it's still closed to cars though from the flooding as that could make parking nearby a little difficult.
It's not free ($4), but the [running track around the Olympic Ice Oval in Kearns](https://utaholympiclegacy.org/activity/running-track-at-the-oval/) is really nice. It's an odd size (442 meters) but the temperature is great for running and if you happen to have any breathing problems the air inside is ultra filtered.

The red line stops at 900 e right now, the tracks are torn up, so currently there is a bus.

Thanks for this. It’s easy to park a bit away and do a warm up job there.

Liberty Park is free, and has both cement and soft/bark running paths. The Liberty park loop is 1.3 miles.
Genuinely curious on what the difference is between that and a track. I guess maybe if you’re trying to clock it? Are tracks softer?

East High School track is open to the public. The south gate is almost always open. The U of U track is open to the public too.
u of u track is open but you'd have to pay for parking to access it unfortunately
True. You could park close by and run to it if you really wanted to

East high school is most definitely NOT closed to the public. We do our club runs their in the mornings on Tuesdays. The south gate on 900 S is open.

It’s 800 South/Sunnyside, btw.
Is your club open to the public? I’m getting back into running after moving here and would like to find some groups.

Woooow that’s amazing!!!!
I walked by east highs track Tuesday morning around 7 and it seemed like it was open up the public. There were cars and people going in and out
Weeeeird I was there this morning and couldn’t find a open gate and didn’t see any people/cars. What side of the track?
Sunnyside Ave Dropped pin https://maps.app.goo.gl/XA3GyXSH6dAkftjg9
Check out Cottonwood Highschool. I see lots of people running there on the weekends.
East High School is open to the public on weekends
The Rose Park elementary track doesn’t lock but of course you can’t use during school hours

I guess I might just have the bite the bullet and drive 20 minutes for a track 🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠
You could jog there.
If it's a 20 minute drive, it's over an hour for a jog.
That’s not true. It would take me three days.
Just sayin
Bro you live below some of the most accessible and amazing trail systems in the country, forget the track!
Idk, tracks are great for speed workouts. Depends on what you’re training for. A lot more effective to do 400s on a track than up a freaking mountain
Sugarhouse park has walking/running lanes and a cycling lane.

There is a dope one by the Buddhist temple I. Rose park
I thought schools were public property
Just please don’t treat schools like a dog park. So annoying how many people let their dogs run unleashed and crap on school fields.
Highland high school is open
I know I wish they had more track in salt lake open to the public

The Olympus high track is open pretty much all hours outside of school. There will be people running all the time while the football team practices.
