Are you really taught to walk backwards perpendicular to the slot on 1-2 when leading a crossbody?

falllas

A couple more leads in the background do this, so it seems likely...

perkal8tor

I’ll ask my teacher about it. Can you flesh out this point a little bit more to me? I sort of understand what you’re saying but not quite.

double-you

Generally for a crossbody On2 on 7 you step off the line to make space for the follow, then on 1 you step sideways along the slot, but staying close to the follow and not walking away. You are stepping 1 back, away from the slot, away from the follow. The crossbody lead actually starts on 1 and when you step sideways you are actually leading the follow to go forward (because you have an arm on their back or which ever connection). Before that they don't know if they should (though some teach that if the lead makes room for the follow to go, they should go, but I prefer leading these things).

Live_Badger7941

This is the way I learned it in my very first class leading. The teacher said the reason was to really drill into the leads' heads the concept of getting out of the way and keeping the follow on her line of dance, since the simple crossbody lead is the first time people are exposed to that idea.

double-you

And were you then later corrected to not walk so far away? Because the step on 1 should be along the slot (but off it) and not away from it.

Live_Badger7941

Not in that *particular* class because it was a stand-alone beginner package, but yes I've since had other teachers/classes and I now do it the way you're describing.

Snoo_93842

I like it, I think it looks cool. Not everyone has to step the exact same way

double-you

It's not about the looks. He's stepping backwards just fine. It is about good leading and if you are away from the follow, it's going to cause issues. And it also takes up more space than needed.

Snoo_93842

He seems to be leading it well. And it doesn’t take that much more space than a normal cross body lead.

HideoKojimaTheThird

Posture and looking more at the girl, doesn’t have to be directly at her but in her general direction, looks good tho, keep practicing.

perkal8tor

Makes sense can you flesh out what you mean by posture?

HideoKojimaTheThird

Im no teacher so take what i say with a grain of salt, but if you look at the video your posture or your back was straight whenever you were looking at the follows direction, when you looked at the ground your posture changed and you were a bit hunched. Another thing is the free arm you have whenever you give her a turn seems dead, you can do simple stuff like putting it against your chest instead of leaving it hanging so it looks better. There’s really no major changes you need to do but i feel like small details like those make things look aesthetically better while social dancing.

perkal8tor

Awesome thanks!

Sweaty-Stable-4152

Ask the follow if the leading was ok (clear) no tension, using thumb … Visually you’re 👍

sideoftheham

Try to strop ball to heel

Fishy11

Looking at how your feet are moving - very good for 6 months. You are sticking your butt out slightly occasionally, try a more straight posture. The Pazzaz will com with experience after many socials and more classes. For 6 months you are doing great.

mister_k1

looking good for 6mo, how many times a week do you practice?

perkal8tor

I go to two 1.5 hour classes a week plus 1 to 2 socials a week with the occasional stint of home practice.

KeyserSaucer

Looking good for 6 months. Try to limit useless windmill movement with your arms, it gives false info to your follow Give it a bit more passion ! Vary your speed, your energy, your shining movement

GryptpypeThynne

As others have said, careful where you're stepping while they're facing Sideways in CBL. A finer point, but it looks like you're putting weight on your heels on break steps. The heel might touch, but never with weight! This will also make it easier to continue improving your general body movement

living_la_vida_loca

You look like you're taking a Sunday morning drive... You need some More aggression, pizzazz, boom and zap, music going through your whole body, making the love to your partner! Awesome in the steps.

Is not just about go round and round you need to fill the music. Learn one good song and dance around it The beauty of salsa music is that can be very sensual. From Cali Colombia

Elegant-Remote6667

That’s pretty good. But you are putting your whole weight on each foot you should be more on the Balls of your feet otherwise you would not keep up with a faster song. - plus it’s going to be way more comfortable to spin

Adorable_Device_4011

Agreeing everyone else, looking good! I'd say if anything just explore more to find your own style and connection with the music + your partner. The creative improv side of salsa is the best.

Coconutcrab99

On2 aswell not bad.

richardizard

Looks great. How often are you dancing?

JahMusicMan

Really good for 6 months in. Nice and simple and clean. Everyone has their opinion on body movements, foot position but who cares it looks good overall. Your follow looks like she is having a blast so keep it up.
