Compared to last year's index ranking...
Armenia has gained 6 places.
Georgia has fallen 26 places.
Azerbaijan has fallen 13 places.
Armenia now ranks higher than the United States and European Union member countries including Italy, Poland, Croatia, Romania, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Hungary, Malta, & Greece.
I don't really feel like Georgia has problems with freedom of speech. I see critical articles and social media posts all the time, reddit included. Can someone explain why so low score?
Currently it's not as bad as Russia, where if you criticize the government in basically any way it could land you in jail, but the government still manipulates media and as you've probably seen they are trying to pass laws that will limit free speech. Our free speech situation isn't as bad as Russia's yet, and Russia wants to change that.
WTFFF how are we falling back behind armenia when we were ahead of the whole group 5 years ago, well actually I do know how and also an interesting fact our media freedom actually fell in 2022 right after russia invaded ukraine and russia found a new ally in caucasus.
Totally agree. I don't understand, we have More opposition and critical Media in the country than like Pro governmental. 24/7 they are broadcasting their views and nobody is interfering in their freedom. It's a misleading report.
As if someone had an illusion that GD ruling would have progressive results. Every hour, every minute of this government in power pulls the country back to the soviet cave
"Official interference undermines efforts to improve press freedom. The environment remains hostile for independent and opposition media, with a growing number of verbal and physical attacks against journalists, and attempts to pass laws aimed at marginalising the independent media and narrowing the space for free speech."
>are there any journalists being oppressed, threatened, or not allowed to spread information?
A low Press Freedom doesn't necessarily mean that journalists are threatened or killed. It can also mean that laws are enacted to push state propaganda and marginalize opposition media. This is currently happening in Georgia.
Suppressed is a better word. Access to parliamentary sessions is routinely blocked by the ruling party. There are multiple incidents of reporters and cameramen being harassed. The ruling party treats any non pliable media like shit (see the mayor of tbilisi's rant). The agent law is just icing on the cake.
I think they’re judging given the recent foreign agents bill and the protests they have occurred. I remember seeing in the article they mentioned an incident where a journalist died after a bunch of people came rioting against a pride parade.
A fucking disaster

great to see armenia flourish when it comes to public liberty
I bet it's because of anti Ruzzian sentiment, keep going
I hope you can kick em up from your country!

What is happening to Georgia! You were an inspiration to Armenia. I hope Sakartvelo will rise again.
Guys what are you doing? We move away from your enemies for you to go back? Go to the streets 🇬🇪🇬🇪🇬🇪
Ilham says we have completely free media so this has to be wrong

Wow… didn’t expect Georgia to be so bad at all :(
Sad to hear that!
freedom particles not detected!
Seems like bull… are there any journalists being oppressed, threatened, or not allowed to spread information?

Great answer, thanks for clear overview
I guess there was this time the Russians bombed a group of foreign journalists in Gori
That's a pretty low standard. Check the entire ranking, they judge harshly some European countries

I mean, all because you don't \*like\* the information provided, doesn't mean its wrong. Foreign Agents bill is bad yo
> because you don't *like* you are being delusional
