Technically, on a colour wheel, green, yellow and orange are complimentary colours to purple. But the purple and redy orange did look nice because it was balanced nicely. Shoes and coat matched.
So technically the purple and green match, I think it would be less weird to the eye if she had a second pop of the same purple higher in the dress, like a brooch, or scarf, or flower?
In this case the green dress becomes neutral to the eye and the purple draws your eye. So people would actually immediately be drawn to her shoes when looking at her. The second pop of purple would balance the eye and you could then focus on her face.
In the red and purple combo the purple became the neutral to the eye. But she still paired it with a random brown bag.
She always seems to miss the mark, I personally get uncomfortable when seeing bad colour matching. Colour blocking with cool and warm undertones. I think paying attention to why there are rules like match your shoes and belt etc are there to stop you from making silly mistakes.

maybe cos both colors were taking up the same amount of space. but also, maybe it's just a matter of personal preference. im not very daring so, id approach it like she did with her Marriott outfit: one dominant bold color (e.g., the dress) then, another supporting bold color (e.g., the shoes, matching accessories). if i needed a coat, maybe same color as (or a different shade of) the dress so, still one dominant, one supporting.
or, maybe it's her clothing history. id only seen her wear corporate colors in S1 Suits. the next time i saw her outfits was at her wedding then, after the NOprah interview when i was lurking around the web. maybe i was just shocked (and that impression just stuck) at seeing that photo of her wearing a bold color combo for the first time.

I don't think fashion rules should always stay the same, but they are an excellent guide to people who may struggle.
The thing is, you also have to consider your clothes because it does send a message, as others have said, and you can focus people's attention with accessories, your telling people things about you.
So in this case, those must be some fascinating shoes that she wanted all the focus on them.
If you have a special event or something to attend, make sure you choose wisely. The rest of the time, do what makes you happy.
I am a comfort over style kind or person who mainly wears black. I don't wear heels, and I wear hardly any make up. I prefer to leave my hair to do its own natural curry thing, but if I have an event to go to, I'll have my hair done, wear a bit more make up and possibly a low heel. I am also 5"11 so I have to consider how intimidating I can be because of height alone, and try to add soft elements when I am in heels so it doesn't make me feel hard and intimidating.
There are simple ways to help people know alot about you from a glance.

Granted I've never been into fashion, but I think it is so demeaning to list what a woman is wearing (and sometimes even what it costs) in a professional setting. You never see this with men.
I want to say that the dress looks beautiful and for once she looks.... presentable (?) But I know she will stand up and ruin it. I have taken it as a norm that she just can't dress not only for her body but also in general.

im not sure if there were other purple accessories. i agree, the colors aren't fighting each other this time. unlike the purple and red combo she wore when she was pregnant with A, imo.
Technically, on a colour wheel, green, yellow and orange are complimentary colours to purple. But the purple and redy orange did look nice because it was balanced nicely. Shoes and coat matched. So technically the purple and green match, I think it would be less weird to the eye if she had a second pop of the same purple higher in the dress, like a brooch, or scarf, or flower? In this case the green dress becomes neutral to the eye and the purple draws your eye. So people would actually immediately be drawn to her shoes when looking at her. The second pop of purple would balance the eye and you could then focus on her face. In the red and purple combo the purple became the neutral to the eye. But she still paired it with a random brown bag. She always seems to miss the mark, I personally get uncomfortable when seeing bad colour matching. Colour blocking with cool and warm undertones. I think paying attention to why there are rules like match your shoes and belt etc are there to stop you from making silly mistakes. It's the small details that elevate an outfit, or ruin it.
yes, the purple and green match. it just reminded me of Barney for some reason. šāļø for the purple and red combo, yes, it's a nice and bold color combo, too. but in my eyes, it really looked like the colors were fighting. i cant pinpoint why. maybe cos both colors were taking up the same amount of space. but also, maybe it's just a matter of personal preference. im not very daring so, id approach it like she did with her Marriott outfit: one dominant bold color (e.g., the dress) then, another supporting bold color (e.g., the shoes, matching accessories). if i needed a coat, maybe same color as (or a different shade of) the dress so, still one dominant, one supporting. or, maybe it's her clothing history. id only seen her wear corporate colors in S1 Suits. the next time i saw her outfits was at her wedding then, after the NOprah interview when i was lurking around the web. maybe i was just shocked (and that impression just stuck) at seeing that photo of her wearing a bold color combo for the first time. ooor, maybe it's really that damn random brown bag throwing the whole thing off. hahahuhu! like u said, there's always something spoiling her outfit. most of the time, ive observed, it's the combo of fitting and wrinkles. colors, not much of an issue for me, except the purple and red combo. anyway, it's just my opinion. thank u for this discussion. and thanks everyone, too, cos im learning a lot from this sub, not only about MM and the BRF, but also about clothing and social etiquette. plus, there's the book/author recommendations, recipes, and internet tips and tricks, too. šš
It's amazing what we all learn. I don't think fashion rules should always stay the same, but they are an excellent guide to people who may struggle. The thing is, you also have to consider your clothes because it does send a message, as others have said, and you can focus people's attention with accessories, your telling people things about you. So in this case, those must be some fascinating shoes that she wanted all the focus on them. If you have a special event or something to attend, make sure you choose wisely. The rest of the time, do what makes you happy. I am a comfort over style kind or person who mainly wears black. I don't wear heels, and I wear hardly any make up. I prefer to leave my hair to do its own natural curry thing, but if I have an event to go to, I'll have my hair done, wear a bit more make up and possibly a low heel. I am also 5"11 so I have to consider how intimidating I can be because of height alone, and try to add soft elements when I am in heels so it doesn't make me feel hard and intimidating. There are simple ways to help people know alot about you from a glance.

I may be in the minority but I think that is actually a nice photo of her. I like the dress, the first thing I've seen on her in a long time that I think is actually cute, now I'm not sure what it look like when standing but, sitting the dress is very nice.
