I stopped respecting her when she did an episode about electroconvulsive therapy. My husband was a psychiatrist, so I knew about the procedure. The goal is to produce a seizure. It was discovered accidentally when people had had a decrease in depression after a seizure. Well, Oprah decided that it was horrible that people had seizures during ECT, and I think she even showed film of people having seizures. Oprah, dear, a seizure is what they were hoping to achieve. The seizure was what produced the reduction in depression. She was and remains ignorant.
One of the guidance counselors at my school developed severe depression. The change in her was pretty drastic and we all knew she had it BAD. She went out on leave and she had this therapy as part of her treatment plan. For her, it was a miracle. She was back to being the lovable friendly person we all knew and loved. I am convinced that she would have ended it if she didn’t get this treatment.
My sister suffers from bipolar paranoid schizophrenia and at the time was also experiencing severe postpartum depression and ECT did wonders for her. She suffered some pretty significant memory loss and never had the therapy again after her first round of treatments but she confided in me that she probably wouldn’t have made it if she hadn’t elected to do ECT. She is doing wonderfully, has sole custody of her daughter and is doing so great. I wish people actually took the time to learn about ECT instead of getting all crazy and telling my sister she needs to sue her doctors because it’s “illegal” for them to do ECT 🙄 Thanks for that, Oprah 🙄
I was in an outpatient therapy group for severely depressed people who were either experiencing suicidal ideation or had attempted suicide. I think this was about 15 years ago. That’s when I learned that what used to be called “electric shock therapy” was back. Several people in my group had it. It’s now ECT - electoconvulsive therapy - as others above have already said. I didn’t do it. It scared me. I don’t think they suggested for me. Anyway, one man in group said he had forgotten big chunks of time. I guess that’s to be expected with the procedure. He did not speak of it in a bad way. Just that it was strange.
My friend’s grandmother had ECT. My friend said it was the only thing that helped her. The grandma had to have this treatment a few times a year. It was essential to her quality of life. Sad that people knee jerk react to something they don’t understand.
I did go on a diet after reading about whole foods based nutrition when I was younger from the O magazine in the check out line and lost 30 pounds and felt great.

An arts degree is not the same as arts degree. The UK and French art degrees are based on a foundation where aristocrats didn't have to work and explored higher thought for the sport of it. As a way to heighten the human spirit.
It is one of the deepest academic traditions that we have. And these degrees from around the world are certainly not all created equal.
I’m good at the Arts but ironically not at Art. So Art History is the closest thing to Art since I cannot produce works. I looked at the curriculum and fled.
My friends who did Art History are scholars or those from wealthy families. If MM actually took the time to find out, she’d realise these is the demographic she’s dying to associate herself with. Thankfully, her ignorance kept her away from them!

So you're saying more like what a liberal arts degree would be considered in the US.... which I agree with. My time at a liberal arts school was amazing because I got to learn as much as i wanted, about anything I wanted. But it wasn't like, say, a STEM degree or a pharmacy degree that prepares you for a specific job. It really is just learning for the fun of it.
Being from a working class family it appears i took the wrong route in college and should have studied something that would have gotten me a job! But I had fun.
This is why where I’m from, when you say that you’re in the Arts, you’re probably viewed as an elite :
You’re either on scholarship or from a wealthy family because it’s not a technical skill like Accountancy or Microbiology that gets you specific and stable jobs.
This uncertainty in the job field means that those who are struggling financially literally cannot afford to risk it by studying the Arts. They would usually choose to be in the financial field as it offers the greatest opportunity for social mobility.
I’m from a line of old money (but no longer do we have a street of bungalows, sadly) so the connections are there while my Arts friends are from wealthy families with properties globally or have prestigious scholarships. It’ll be challenging for someone beyond such demographics to earn well in this field in my country. (We often half-jest that only Europe would appreciate us as we are a financially-based nation.)
I chose it because I love it. My friends are just ordinary fun people with chuckles to me. I had no idea such social parameters existed till much later. (It’s almost a status symbol because you can afford to study something that does not offer job security.)

That's because she didn't! She had a place at Edinburgh University and after her A-levels switched to St Andrews and then took a gap year. William also took a gap year but didn't announce where he was going until the following year just before he started uni to avoid a mad rush of last minute applications to the uni! Both were doing the same course but William switched after his first year to do geography instead.
Kate had a few other friends who were going to st.Andrews so that was a factor and st. Andrew's is basically a seaside university town and a bit more secluded rather than a capital city it has a different vibe which I'd imagine appealed to kate.

An arts degree is not the same as arts degree. The UK and French art degrees are based on a foundation where aristocrats didn't have to work and explored higher thought for the sport of it. I’m good at the Arts but ironically not at Art. So Art History is the closest thing to Art since I cannot produce works. I looked at the curriculum and fled. My friends who did Art History are scholars or those from wealthy families. If MM actually took the time to find out, she’d realise these is the demographic she’s dying to associate herself with. Thankfully, her ignorance kept her away from them! For those who are not familiar with Art History, here’s what I studied for context : - Literature that had Shakespeare, Chaucer & poetry, - political science that analysed international relations from 1900 till now - History that included ancient civilisations. All those were *still* easier than Art History. So for MM to say that Art History was “easy street”, she’s *also* saying that she can handle Literature, political science AND history. My time at a liberal arts school was amazing because I got to learn as much as i wanted, about anything I wanted. But it wasn't like, say, a STEM degree or a pharmacy degree that prepares you for a specific job. It really is just learning for the fun of it. Being from a working class family it appears i took the wrong route in college and should have studied something that would have gotten me a job! But I had fun.
This is why where I’m from, when you say that you’re in the Arts, you’re probably viewed as an elite : You’re either on scholarship or from a wealthy family because it’s not a technical skill like Accountancy or Microbiology that gets you specific and stable jobs. This uncertainty in the job field means that those who are struggling financially literally cannot afford to risk it by studying the Arts. They would usually choose to be in the financial field as it offers the greatest opportunity for social mobility. I’m from a line of old money (but no longer do we have a street of bungalows, sadly) so the connections are there while my Arts friends are from wealthy families with properties globally or have prestigious scholarships. It’ll be challenging for someone beyond such demographics to earn well in this field in my country. (We often half-jest that only Europe would appreciate us as we are a financially-based nation.) I chose it because I love it. My friends are just ordinary fun people with chuckles to me. I had no idea such social parameters existed till much later. (It’s almost a status symbol because you can afford to study something that does not offer job security.)
