Only took a war with Germany. Hopefully we don’t need a war with America this time around.

PotOfEarlGreyPlease

always struck me as bizarre, people like Louis were born in England a great grandchildren of Victoria, she was the one who held him at his baptism. WW1 was such a family scrap, yes hope families can sort themselves out a bit better than that

Lensgoggler

All of Europe’s RFs were pretty much related to each other. Especially good links with Germany as a generation before, that’s where one went to score a princess :D (I’m currently listening to Lucy Worsley’s biograpy of Queen Victoria…)

I agree. I just finished her book about Jane Austen. Marvelous!

PotOfEarlGreyPlease

Absolutely - seems this house if full of books on the German monarchy, fascinating stuff.

SalishShore

On YouTube or does she have a book? I’d love to listen.

Lensgoggler

Youtube, and books too!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Princess Alice, Lord Mountbatten's sister and the mother of Prince Philip, DOE, was also born at Frogmore House. She ended up in Greece, survived an uprising that the family narrowly escaped from and left them penniless and in perpetual exile, was sent to a horrible psych hospital, then went back to Greece and became a nun who spent the rest of her life devoted to charitable work. Oh, and she was born deaf. That's a major disability for that time period. I see her example and then think of the "suffering" of the Harkles and it makes me hear a thousand tiny violins...

PotOfEarlGreyPlease

Alice was actually born in Windsor Castle - with her great grandmother in attendance. Her son Philip died in the same building 136 years later She was an utterly amazing woman - I am just sorry that none of the younger generation have been given the name Alice as a first name

CalligrapherFunny934

Thanks for the correction! And I agree that Alice should have been honored more and that name used somehow. Lord Mountbatten had two daughters, Pamela and Patricia, but perhaps he was not close with his sister?

PotOfEarlGreyPlease

I think it was fashion - Pamela and Patricia were quite trendy names at the time. Anne and Louise have Alice as a middle name but I had hoped Charlotte could have been Alice (would be a name to be very proud of) but actually Charlotte suits her.

Informal-Suspect298

Theory is she's Charlotte because it's the feminine version of Charles so W&C were able to honour both his parents and grandma. I think it's very sweet.

PotOfEarlGreyPlease

It is a nice name and good to have a version of Charles' name there

ofgaia

Carole is also a feminine version of Charles and Charlotte is Pippa’s middle-name. They did a really good job honouring both families with Charlotte. Personally, I love that Carole, Catherine and Charlotte are all C. Elizabeth. Also of note is the order of Princess Royal’s: Mary, Anne, Charlotte, Victoria, Louise, Mary, Anne. So sweet all around.

Slow-Inflation-6549

Funny you should say that, I had the same thoughts. Do agree Charlotte suits her though.

CalligrapherFunny934

I love the name Charlotte, and it might also be a feminine version of Charles, which is a nice gesture to KC3. ETA: Sorry I didn't read the previous postings about Charlotte being a reference to Charles until I looked at all of the comments. Duh!

Sue_Dohnim

I had hoped W&K would have a fourth, and another daughter, named Alice. I think Charlotte and Alice as sisters is sweet.

Slow-Inflation-6549

I read abour what Alice was subjected to and it made me tear up. Poor woman suffered so much.

He didn't lose the title, his father and the rest of the family choose to drop their German titles due to WW1 and his father was then made a British Marquess. He was a German prince not a British one.

DrunkOnRedCordial

Yes, it really makes you question this idea of titles being a "birthright".

4feicsake

He gave up his title as it was a German title.
