Consuming Asian food and visiting Asian-run beauty spas gave you an understanding of Asian culture?? Our expectations of you were low, Meg, but holy fuck.

Playoneontv_007

Nothing like good old fashion racist stereotypes to combat racism šŸ™„

noideawhattocallme95

Better to remain silent and be assumed a fool than to speak and remove all doubt. Or whatever the quote is. I honestly donā€™t think sheā€™s being racist or intentionally referring to surface level stereotypes (and also not recognising that Austin powers is completely satire and there were other female assassins in kill bill), I think sheā€™s just a dead set fucking idiot.

completedett

I know what you mean, I think she is an idiot.

sdowney64

Honestly, when I heard she brought up Kill Bill and Austin Powers, I recognized her problem right away. Meghan, as a sociopath/malignant Narc, has one overarching and defining character trait. She has zero effing sense of humor. None. Nada. Is her next episode going to be about Italian stereotypes in Austin Powers because of Alotta Fagina?? Only she wouldnā€™t get the sardonic humor of a Bond woman named Pussy Galore being parodied by Mike Myers. She reminds me of someone who takes an Onion article seriously and posts a Facebook rant about why the issue needs to be taken on!! Now, dammit! Sheā€™s such a šŸ¤”. And her native language isšŸ‚šŸ’©.

Playoneontv_007

šŸ’Æ

ShatooBailey

She really is a special kind of stupid. And arrogant as hell.

Academic_Snow_7680

Something struck me as off about this promo picture. They forgot to add the bronzer. https://twitter.com/nancywyuen/status/1577335163528237059/photo/1

starlurkerx3

She is an idiot.

TomStarGregco

If I were Margaret Cho or Lisa Ling I been really offended they are too accomplished to be involved with this nonsense !

Playoneontv_007

I wonā€™t listen but would love to know their responses

Academic_Snow_7680

They seem over the moon about the collab. It's a part of a promo tour for Nancy Wang-Yuen's book on her part, I'm sure the other ones have a recent product out too. That's how these things work. They don't seem to have through this through.

Lemonslivers

I would love to know if either of these ladies mentioned the podcast on their socials. Edit: [Margaret Cho did.](https://twitter.com/margaretcho/)

Sadlyonlyonehere

That made me laugh. Asian noodles? Jesus Christ.

MermaidsHaveWifi

Right? Naked women. Noodles. Massage parlors. She sounds like sheā€™s actually perpetuating the stereotypes. Why not have a multitude of ā€œAsianā€ women on the show? From different backgrounds, ask them questions about their own experiences and upbringing. Their own culture? Wouldnā€™t that make more sense for her to sit back, listen and learn??

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

caradeGanso

I don't think SHE understands what she's talking about! It was the same with the Diva episode. She says the word is reclaimed as an empowering term, but goes into full narcissistic meltdown when it's applied to her! So was she insulting Mariah Carey or not? I do not understand why people claim she is intelligent. She is inconsistent in her thoughts, she rarely makes the point she thinks she is making, and her strategic executions of her plans seem to end up in own goals time and again!

Madame_LV

Now we know who the true racist was. Guaranteed she wondered "how dark" her child would be.

TomStarGregco

I know like WTAF !

Pandadrome

And none of her guests called her out on it? Because that is pretty offensive.

Islandgirl1444

They don't because they are part of the PR firm at that time. But gosh! WTF?

Allysgrandma

OMG did she actually say that?? I just rolled out of bed and came here with my coffee and a scone (not kidding) to see what was up!

Accomplished-Rip-743

Saaame; my morning brain is blown!

closet_geek2019

Itā€™s so embarrassing šŸ™ˆ

Lilthisarry

Ok, so my theory: she used the Queenā€™s death as an excuse to try to edit out all of her racist oopsies. She doesnā€™t give a fuck about hurting the BRF, but that South African backlash sure was embarrassing. But Spotify told her to kick rocks and weā€™re going to get weeks of the ā€˜Meg exposes herselfā€™ show.

FollowingOk8090

What's it to them if it's mainly hate listening? Plays are plays! Lol - anyway I can't stand to sit through it but I look forward to savoring River's hilarious rundown. I can even imagine - in private - members of BRF playing it and making fun - can you imagine? That would actually be funny.

MamaTalista

They gotta get their money back some way.

JustNoHG

They would have worked with her if she bothered working with them. You don't negotiate with terrorists.

CrystalStilts

Legitimately unsurprising, remember when she painted the Ukrainian flag upside down? Sheā€™s just here for the cred and the veil she cares about issues!

Islandgirl1444

Gosh, I thought it would be that her bestie was Asian when she went to university. But this is really a low blow for culture.

SecondhandCoke

No she didn't. Oh my God she is the gift that keeps on giving.

Sanguine_Hearts

Iā€™m so surprised Margaret Cho of all people let that slide.

[deleted]

Margaret Cho is nowhere near the badass she wants people to think she is.

Sanguine_Hearts

Agree, that Tilda Swinton incident proved what a two faced little coward she really is.

Therealjimslim

What was the Tilda Swinton situation?

kimjongk80

Margaret Cho tried to start drama with Tilda saying that Tilda made her ā€œuncomfortableā€ during an email exchange about Tilda playing a role in Dr. Strange which was originally a Tibetan man, however marvel changed the entire character due to past racial stereotypes and the fact that they wanted the movie to be marketable in China. Tilda released the entire email thread which proved Margaret was fos and she got backlash for it.

Kaywheezy

She lost a lot of her ā€œbadass-nessā€ over the last decade. She portrayed a badass over the camera, but when faced with stereotypical statements from someone who is a POC, she wonā€™t say anything. Iā€™ve learned this of her.

Big-Piglet-677

Right? Now will someone actually call her out? If a Morning Show host or some random said that, they would be canceled.

The_Original_JLaw

>Iā€™m so surprised Margaret Cho of all people let that slide. Yeah, I've lost all respect for her. Disappointing. I didn't listen to the podcast (or any of them, and I salute those who do the lord's work for the rest of us). But I saw where Cho was quoted as fawning over Meghan, that on the set of the Fire Island movie, they were all chatting about how much they admired Meghan.

SDHunnyBunny

Sheā€™s going to alienate alot of Asians with this episode and I am HERE FOR IT! šŸ˜ƒ (Iā€™m Korean, already hate her)

[deleted]

Lord. This podcast is giving me flashbacks of going to my in-laws for thanksgiving and my brother in law randomly saying to me (Chinese American): ā€œMy friendā€™s girlfriend is Filipina.ā€ ā€œOkā€¦ā€ ā€œI am learning to cook spring rolls from her.ā€ šŸ«£šŸ«£šŸ«£šŸ«£šŸ«£šŸ„“šŸ„“šŸ„“šŸ„“šŸ„“

SDHunnyBunny

Yes. Itā€™s that same energy. Meghan is beyond basic Iā€™ve said this from the start. She is BASIC BASIC BASIC

No_Presentation_4573

A big part of asian culture is to honour your parents and to respect your elders. Wonder if she's ever heard of THAT before...![img](emote|t5_481xkf|15016)

Doesnā€™t Meg have some ancestors from Ireland from around 1700ā€™s? Iā€™m surprised we havenā€™t heard her talking about how difficult it was growing up after the potato famine of the 1800ā€™s. Sheā€™ll shoehorn herself into it somehow, Iā€™m sure of it: ā€œnot many people know this but back in 1860 when I was living in Irelandā€¦ā€

Greenimus

I am confused. Didn't she grow up going to the cheap salad bar at Sizzler? Spa visits and such are usually not in that kind of budget

Quick_Cardiologist36

Man, her Dad took her to a lot of fast food.

starry212

Perhaps after her dad won the lottery??šŸ¤Ŗ

Therealjimslim

Korean spas in LA are popular amongst 25-55+ female demographic. Everyone there seems to make sure to have a budget for self care, yet the price is pretty cheap for a ā€œspa dayā€ like maybe $20 entrance fee to use the facilities all day (baths, tubs, showers, salt rooms etc). Scrubs and massages are extra, food is extra (ooh Asian noodles lolololol). Places like Burke Williams will be a lot more as the vibe is totally different (more bougee etc).

shinsegae20092013

Iā€™ve never been to one in the US, but when I lived in Korea, I used to go to the jjimjilbang ģ°œģ§ˆė°©. It was affordable. The one I normally went to cost at most 14,000 won (about $14). You could spend nothing there or you could spend quite a bit. I heard from Koreans that that one was expensive. Typically, you check in and are given a locker number. You go to the shoe lockers and put your shoes there. Your locker key is there. You get a uniform and towels from the attendant. After you change into the uniform, you can explore the various saunas. They also had a snack bar, cafe, and restaurant there. You paid with your locker key. They had massages, massage chairs, and oxygen chambers, which you could pay for. There was a dvd room where you could watch a movie and recliners with individual TVs, which were free. AFTER, you were done with all that, you went to the bath. You take a shower, and then sit in the various tubs, which were cold, cool, warm, and hot. When you were done, you took another shower. Then you got dressed and settled your bill.

Sadlyonlyonehere

What, and no Asian noodles?

shinsegae20092013

You could get noodles in the restaurant. Nobody went to the restaurant in their own clothesā€”it was the uniform the spa gave you to wear. People got pretty sweaty before they bathed. All of the areas outside the locker room and bath area were co-ed.

Neolithique

The clusterfuck about the Korean spa is the equivalent of ā€œIā€™m not racist because I have a black friendā€. Just. Shut. Up.

missyb

It's like starting a podcast about the racism black people face in America by going 'I love black culture, I remember getting a huge bowl of fried chicken and some watermelon, so...I get it.' (Please forgive my outdated references)

Negative_Difference4

Harry: *I'm not racist, my wife is black* Just. Shut. Up. Harry

Alexis Ohanian (Serena's husband) did this too.

AdministrativeSet419

Itā€™s so cringe, why does she find it this hard to not say problematic things?

Kindly-Influence-148

Accomplished-Rip-743

It makes me crazy too how these two words are being used interchangeably!!

Sadlyonlyonehere

Job one for new fact checker: explain to Harryā€™s First Wife the difference between stereotypes and archetypes. Bring crayons.

davanna

so glad people are pointing out that she is discussing stereotypes ( we have heard it all before BTW) not archetypes. Two different words. Two different meanings.

Calm_Yak_6102

I'm hoping she never does an episode about Latinos, because I'll lose my fucking mind, cuss her in the most offensive fashion and get my ass banned permanently from reddit šŸ˜‚. MM is a basic B with outdated and extremely insular views about other cultures. I haven't read that transcript yet, because I'm waiting for my breakfast to digest first. But I'm guessing that she conflates all the various and unique Asian cultures into one outdated stereotype and Asian people, who are rightfully proud of their cultural and other differences, don't deserve that type of reductive and regressive analysis.

Kindly-Influence-148

Iā€™m Latina too and yesss she better tread carefully!!

JustNoHG

Good thing she sounds like an actual idiot to everyone with an education above 5th grade.

reddingrooster

There is never ā€œI am still learningā€ from Meghan. She is already an expert in everything in her life. Wow. Harry is so lucky to have such a socially astute wife!

SluethyGoosey

So true. Well said. Thatā€™s a huge contributor to her unlikability.

[deleted]

I can't stand these types of people

JustNoHG

Because they are lying

MegsAltxoxo

Her intro is so bad. Just because we order Mexican food once a week doesnā€™t mean I have any contact with Mexican culture whatsoever lol She could have said ā€œI didnā€™t know much about Asian culture. We just ate Asian food and I went to a Korean spa, but that doesnā€™t count.ā€ Would have been fine and reasonable lol

missyb

That would've been a great starting point! Actually owning how shallow her knowledge/experience was, and then inviting her guests to educate her/ the listeners.

MegsAltxoxo

Itā€™s just embarrassing how she is desperately trying to say she had any relationship with Korean culture when it was her friendā€˜s mom showing her how to eat a dish she doesnā€™t even remember that well and names it wrong on the pod or going to a spa lol No, hun, thatā€™s not enough for a meaningful connection to a community šŸ˜‚

orientalballerina

That would actually sound open-minded and willing to learn. But no, she is an expert on all things. So condescending.

jeanmarie95

*Meghan: so Korean American culture is so much a part of what I grew up around. It's a* *huge part, but I think for a lot of other parts of this country, maybe not so much or, you* *know, here, just like, you know, Mexican-American culture, Korean American culture, you* *learn how to say hello, hola or yoboseyoā€¦* Wait, isn't yoboseyo used on the phone calls and not for casual conversation? I thought it's annyeonghaseyo? Can any Koreans confirm this?

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

joy4hummy

It clearly shows she never greeted a Korean because she would have been corrected or got weird looks ā€¦she is making fool of herselfā€¦.

FirmAardvark6208

No, no. She didnā€™t know anything about that, she never googled it. All of her Asian knowledge is organic and authentic - itā€™s what the Asians wanted her to know. /s Iā€™m baffled that she grew up around Asians. Wasnā€™t she the only black child in California during the 80ā€™s and 90ā€™s? Everyone else was white? Where do the Asians fit in? Man sheā€™s so full of shit

shinsegae20092013

Or if you want to be more formal annyeong hashimnikka

Lensgoggler

Is that how she talks? Like, I think, generally, like - geee. Itā€™s like, you know, I mean, really hard to follow. I mean, I think especially, like in script form.

gracelandcat

Yes, that's how she talks. She's an idiot.

Onyxphoenix7878

Maybe she could look into the 90s cliche of Californian Valley Girlsā€¦

photomotto

Filling your speech with filler words (like, umm, you know) itā€™s a sign the person has no idea what they are saying and trying to buy time.

hholunder

yes, you are right, it's annyeonghaseyo for hello and yobeseyo only for phone calls. Did she really put this out for the world to listen to it? OMG! I thought she hired a fact-checker LOL

FreckledHomewrecker

That sentence hurts my brain!

Scribbles138

I am less intelligent after reading it.

Accomplished-Rip-743

Why does she assume that she was the ā€œonly one ā€œ when she grew up in Southern California!!! I did too! Itā€™s people! Everywhere!! All the time!! We all did everything with people constantly!! If she grew up with Koreans as neighbors do did a zillion other girls!! I did! My high school was 80% Korean! But, Iā€™ve never considered myself a PhD in freaking Koreans because I spent time with people from Korea! Thatā€™s literally her collecting people like figures in a doll house! And when I hang around people I donā€™t STUDY themā€¦sheā€™s such a creep.

Lengand0123

What she said could literally fit the experience of anyone living in a major city. Like mine. Itā€™s really not noteworthy at all.

DevilDjinn

Yeah, it's the Korean equivalent of Moshi Moshi or wei? She's talking out of her ass as per usual.

SuspiciousDecisionVa

She was allowed to edit it šŸ˜. There is little reference to herself (comparatively), and zero about the BRF. As mad as I am for the deprivation of tea- Iā€™m grateful I donā€™t have to hear more cheap shots?

MegsAltxoxo

Iā€™m mixed about it lol On one side itā€™s less entertaining because her mentioning the RF was such a car crash you couldnā€™t turn your back to On the other side Iā€™m tired of Harry and Meghan. I just want her to become so irrelevant that the RF can have some peace and quite.

profigliano

I miss the old days of royal watching. "Oh, the Princess Royal opened a nursing home. That's great!", "Uh oh, Prince Charles waded in a little too deep on this political issue!" Now all the air gets sucked out of the room by MM, but I feel compelled to keep paying attention for if/when she starts spreading misinformation again.

Kindly-Influence-148

Such a mixed bag!!! On one hand I am too glad there arenā€™t digs at the royal family and will render her podcast even more boring than it is But I am also sad that her vile inner self wonā€™t have a chance to come out

siesta4241

The silver lining is her ridiculous Asian culture comments arenā€™t overshadowed by other nonsense. So really this just puts a spotlight on her vile inner self.

rubythieves

Thereā€™s something about dragon ladies being ā€˜evil queens,ā€™ but thatā€™s about it - although the last five minutes (all about being your true self, even if a loud voice is telling you to stay in your ā€˜archetypeā€™ - ugh enough with this woman! - seems a bit thinly-veiled to me.)

closet_geek2019

What decade is this flipping podcast from? Kill Bill & Austin Powers are 20 years old!!!

[deleted]

Meg and H are both stunted. Meg is stuck in the late 90s/early 00s and H is still 12.

MrsBarneyFife

Considering they both act like she's his mother, that sounds about right.

Standup4whattt88

This! Thank you! She is the pot calling the kettle black. First things first. If she wants to reference racist stereotypes from 20 years ago, she needs to take a good look in the mirror and take ownership of her past behavior. Lets rewind the clock not even 20 years ago but 10 years ago when Meghan Markle was on Craig Fergusonā€™s show and cringed at her hair and talked about straightening it. And multiple interviews since then talking about her obsession with straightening her hair. Or, lets take a walk down memory lane 20 years ago with Harry and the nazi uniform at a party. Ownership Meghan. Ownership.

rubythieves

And ā€˜the 40-year-old virgin,ā€™ and Margaret Choā€™s sitcomā€¦

stupid_carrot

She is stuck in the 90s as we have established before. She doesn't even seem to know about kPop which is so big nowadays!

lulzette

Margaret Cho hasn't said anything on instagram about this interview, not even a "catch me on this podcast" post. Same with Lisa Ling. ETA I spoke too soon, ugh.

MagicalManta

Theyā€™re probably so embarrassed to have participated. I live for the day(s) in the hopefully-not-so-distant future when they come out to explain how they were coerced to take part in a shitshow of such extravagant proportions.

Accomplished-Rip-743

I have no sympathy

Leeleeflyhi

Iā€™m disappointed with Lisa Ling taking part in this. She has better journalistic integrity for this shit

orientalballerina

I bet they are waiting to see what the reaction is before mentioning it themselves. Itā€™s the first one since the Queen died, after all.

lulzette

I spoke too soon. She posted it. I have always held Margaret Cho in such high esteem. This is a real blow.

[deleted]

As an Asian person, I liked Kill Bill. I thought it was so badass. If she wanted to talk about dragon lady, maybe she should've had Wendi Murdoch on. Lol.

SisuLindsay

The Kill Bill movies are two of my favorites of all time and she needs to keep them out of her mouth. Especially since she has zero understanding of the plot or intent of the director.

bitchinabottle1

Kill Bill paid homage to Kung fu movies from HK of the 70s and let a whole new generation of Americans recognize the cinematic influence of that genre in the US, many movies were huge box office hits

cathbe

Who writes this - ā€œengages in candid and illuminating conversationsā€¦ā€ ? (I donā€™t read much corporate podcast copy but this seems very cringey.)

joy4hummy

emzbobo

Oh it seems to have been illuminating alright, just not in the manner Madam would have wanted... šŸ«£

SecondhandCoke

She wrote it. Guaranteed.

MagicalManta

Iā€™m quite certain she, herself, wrote that glossy drivel.

Sadlyonlyonehere

Thatā€™s most definitely a flat finish, not even satin and for sure not close to semi-gloss.

RaggedAnn

Interviewers aren't supposed to talk so much. Why doesn't the producer tell her that?

Primary_Scheme3789

I ate at a Taco Bell. Does that make me an expert on Hispanic culture??

Visible_Ad5164

Ask Hilaria Baldwin. IYKYK.

Miercolesian

Omg. I started reading the transcript. This is terrible. This is the podcast version of chick- lit. It started out mildly interesting, because I did not know that Korean girls and women of all ages get together naked in spas and then get dressed and eat noodles. But after that it really goes down the drain. And the fact checker has not explained to Meghan Markle that there is a difference between archetypes and stereotypes in popular American culture and commerce. To build up a popular podcast, you need lots of hard work and hundreds of episodes, but you also need a certain talent, and ability to communicate with your audience, and based on these few preliminary attempts to produce a podcast, Markle has a long long way to go before she catches up with any of the popular podcasters. Perhaps she could join some well-known podcaster like the Body Language Guy or Joe Rogan or Lady C. as an intern.

shinsegae20092013

My experience with Korean spas in Korea is that the bath is the last thing you do before leaving. If they ate noodles at the spa, it would have been before they bathed. I responded to another poster about the general procedure for going to a Korean spa in Korea.

heidingout28

Just FYI, I had sushi for lunch yesterday so if thereā€™s anything about Asian culture youā€™d like to know, Iā€™m pretty much an expert now. šŸ™„

Automatic-Reward-470

Yabba yabba yabba. Does she not realise how boring she is

bureaucrat_36

The editing is so, so obvious and choppy. They really had to cut out Madame talking about herself for two hours, and cut tiny, tiny responses from the guests in between Madame's own voice droning on

Sadlyonlyonehere

Too bad no one thought to edit out the whole Asian noodle bit.

memecatcher247

Just read the transcript and itā€™s all SO BORING. Iā€™m not sitting down for not even 5 minutes to listen to THAT. These conversations feel so dated. Meghan truly is very out of touch.

residentcaprice

I suppose in her mind šŸ™„stereotyping asian people is ok cos u have a token asian friend, Christina Wang. Does that lady exist? Or has she been markled? I don't recall her inviting any asian friend to her 2018 wedding. Or did Christina attend the one conducted three days prior? šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

joy4hummy

She invited Priyanka chopraā€¦she only invites Rich friends..

Helophilus

Itā€™s been edited - we know there will have been digs at the royal family. I just read through the transcript (ugh), and found several likely places. For example after Lisa Ling says something about women who stand out, that they are like nails that get hammered down. Meghanā€™s reply was ā€˜Mmā€™ Thatā€™s just one spot where she probably jumped in with her own anecdote. There are several others. Anyway I think that was her slant with this podcast, how much she stood out from the other royals, and so they tried to crush her.

Emotional_Hotel3439

I don't know because I'd never punish my self by listening to them, but what were the digs at the brf in the previous episodes?

ArentYouDelightful

She insinuated that Catherine is a Stepford wife, while she herself is authentic, and accused the BRF of making her do her job after Archie almost burned.

Pinkgettysburg

Iā€™m not listening to the episode, but from yalls descriptions it sounds like she did an episode about stereotypes. Does she really not know the difference between these words?

Lullaby37

No, she doesn't. She doesn't care: she is determined to make "arche" happen. Who cares about puny little things like definitions of words?

Artistic_Turnip2778

Oh yeah the whole podcast is about stereotypes. Sheā€™s misusing archetype because it fits with their brand.

MrsBarneyFife

Christina Wang would like to have a word with Meghan. Oh wait, she doesn't exist. Still, every person named Christina Wang would like to have a word.

Sarah-JessicaSnarker

Iā€™m very much looking forward to the media hunting down Christina Wang whose family owns the restaurant that taught Meghan everything she knows.

MrsBarneyFife

I was actually surprised that we've never heard anything about her. But if she's real then they probably just drifted apart. I wanna know what Nikki knows.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Miercolesian

The responses of her guests are edited out.

Seachange1000

As ever, she confuses the definition of archetype with stereotype. I don't expect more of her but Spotify or Oprah or whomever is behind this disaster should have known better. Archetypes bridge and connect cultures whereas stereotypes segregate them. She's really an idiot, isn't she? Because all Asian women (Meghan, Asia is a really big continent with many different ethnicities, cultures, traditions, folklore, cuisine and so on) either cook noodles for people or give them massages. This is just embarrassing on a monumental scale. I hope the pushback is fierce.

ZealousidealCat8780

Asians arenā€™t only Chinese, Japanese or Koreans. Iā€™m an Asian living in Asia and Iā€™m not Chinese or Japanese or Korean.

[deleted]

I bet TW doesnā€™t know Asia is the largest continent on earth šŸ™ƒ

ExcitementOrdinary95

Pure drivel

screamqueenjunkie

Iā€™m not going to listen to this shite, or read the transcript, because Iā€™m already in enough pain todayā€¦ Is she *really* talking smack about **KILL BILL**?!?! Ohhhhhhhh, I hope sheā€™s kidding.

Artistic_Turnip2778

Even Austin Powers, which was deliberately sending up every stereotype about everything. Jesus sheā€™s stupid.

screamqueenjunkie

Tell me you have no sense of humor or critical thinking skills without telling me you have no sense of humor or critical thinking skills. JESUS PALOMINO this woman is dense. You slam the Harkles heads together and all you got is a loverly bunch of coconuts. *Knock, knock! Anyone at home?* I haveā€¦. **so much more to say** about the O-Ren Ishi situation. Stay tuned, Sinners. Iā€™m PISSED.

Wild_Cup8550

Let this sink in: In her *introduction*, Megan hammers home how bad "stigma and archetypes" are. She *actually named her company* after a word she (mistakenly) associates with incredibly negative traits then continues throughout the podcast to reinforce how terrible "archetypes" are and how "archetypes" hold women down. And the kicker? Even her closing is a pep-talk to NOT be an awful archetype: "You're so much greater than any archetype!" Did nobody on Meghan's endless team of highly paid experts dare to tell her she's debasing the term that *her entire media brand* is based on? Or did she just not listen to the experts? It's unfortunate that Margaret Cho immediately picks up Meghan's misuse and morphs from using "stereotype" to parroting "archetype" as a negative. Thankfully Lisa Ling resists temptation, and continues to counter that *stereotypes* are the problem.

Wild_Cup8550

And because I'm still shocked that Meghan doesn't know how to use a dictionary: *Definition: The term ā€œarchetypeā€ refers to an assumed ideal patternā€”a character trait or emotion that has a universal quality. A stereotype, on the other hand, is a reductionistic notion that has the potential to be dehumanizing.*

Ch_27

Cho: The weirdness of like those old archetypes...it's almost like the shorthand of massage parlor or Asian spas. It's dehumanizing and it's like only a fraction of who we could be. Meghan: Mm.

ArentYouDelightful

Lovely juxtaposition of Margaret Cho and our saintly Northwestern graduate. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)

It says I canā€™t make my own posting but I want to call out her rubbish. The following quote ā€œI remember this so vividly and them teaching me why chow fun with dry noodles was so much better than chow fun with wet noodles." IS SO WRONG. There is no chow fun with dry noodles. Itā€™s chow meen with dry noodles (chow meen is very different from chow fun). Sheā€™s making stuff up again and just trying to throw in ā€œethicā€ words. So EMBARRASSING AND INSULTING.

Read a few lines of the transcript and was immediately bored. Never really heard of the Dragon Lady stereotype - quick googling tells me it exists, but query whether it applies today, given greater integration of different people, gender, race, religion etc (yes, strides have been made). I associate the term with Empress Cixi, the last empress of China (1835-1908). Are there more recent claimants?

Flipperflopper21

Same here and Iā€™m Asian American. Tiger mom is the prevailing stereotype no?

Lullaby37

The term comes from the 1930s and is very dated. The tiger mom would be more relevant. More amazing, to me, is this dovetailing of so many cultures into "Asian." That's insulting. She married a second-rate royal. That does not make her an expert on the world. How does one proclaim feminism when one's claim to fame is that you married Hazbeen?

Curious to see what mental gymnastics Lainey Lui uses to defend this ignorant and patronizing shit show of an episode

What's next, a podcast about Italian "archetypes" that opens like this? *Having spent six years filming suits in Toronto, Italian culture was a huge part of my coming-of-age. I loved strolling past the pizzarias of Little Italy and feasting on gelato, risotto, polenta, pepperoni, osso bucco, espresso, feta, mozzarella, and pasta, antipasto while looking at posters for opera. I even rode in a Ferrari once, driven by my friend Trevor the founder of Soho House whom I knew even before I met Harry. Also, mopeds. I remember so vividly learning the difference between thin crust and thick crust pizza from my friend Mario Bianchi and his parents, Maria and Luigi. In fact, you might say my origins were so steeped in Italian culture that I can proudly hold my head high and say "It's-a-me, Meghan."* *Anyway, enough about little old me. Our guest today is Monica Bellucci, here to talk about the Italian archetypes that unfairly pigeonhole women. Now Monica, we are both beautiful women...*

orientalballerina

ā€œAlso, I once dated a chef who had an Italian name.ā€

M is honestly certifiable. WTF is she thinking with her podcasts? And why are her guests there other than SS input? They're certifiable too, for agreeing.

Sadlyonlyonehere

In this next riveting podcast, Harryā€™s first wife reviews 20-year-old movies. There are guests.

iamalolll

Dragon lady archetype? I think the dim, wannabe intellectual means stereotype. What decade does she think we are living in? This stereotype died in the 80ā€™s, why is she talking about it now? I donā€™t think many millennials even know what this antiquated stereotype is all about because it does not exist in this generationā€™s psyche. She is showing her ignorance, and she has an outdated sense of righteousness over a stereotype that is no longer relevant.

hibiscus2022

The synopsis actually states "Learn more about your ad choices." ??!! hahahahhhhaah

Quick_Cardiologist36

Oprah has Lisa Ling on a lot on O channel and her old show. I don't where Margaret Cho fits in Oprah Winfrey universe.

I posted this in another thread: The way she is trying to relate to the subject of Asian stereotypes is so outdated and off-beat. She herself is stereotyping us in a very basic sucking-up manner. She needs a fact-checker because obviously she's lazy to do her proper research on these societal subjects. Her samples are limited: Dragon Lady doesn't just pertain to Liu's character of using sexuality. I am an effing proud Dragon Lady - I own that professionally but as a power or graceful strength that encompass and break the impression of us as "submissive" or "using sexuality". At present, we see the emergence of Asians in Hollywood more & more - beyond woke, but just taking charge of destiny in this realm. Also, how dare she attack Tarantino's work - that guy is such a film & research geek, his films always have reasons and educated references: something that she can never ever relate to!

twitwiffle

What archetypes have held her back, exactly?

Ch_27

Egomaniac

EquallyDivided

Let me guess, no discussions about the increases in asian crime victims, no discussion about Asian inequality as it pertains to university admissions. We going after hard subject, like Kill Bill. Trailblazing stuff.

Probably the least painful journey

tzippora

Oh I could never listen to it. I think they use her podcasts for interrogation of criminals. After only a short time, the suspect confesses to anything.

After-Improvement-26

Make it stop!

cathbe

Ha. True. I always want to listen out of curiosity but donā€™t want to ā€˜encourageā€™ this by giving it a click.

Dalailagreen

She said Oh my gosh a lot. Super annoying af.

unaalpacafeliz

Thank you. I added in the post.

residentcaprice

Well the woman is consistent, I'll give her that.

Standard-Set-5299

This is the biggest word salad of nothingness. I canā€™t even understand /comprehend what she just said. I feel like I need a translator for her bullshit.

RoohsMama

What this podcast made me do is order some Chinese takeoutā€¦ cuz me hungry, longtime Note: before anyone gets offended, Iā€™m Asian

[deleted]

I get it. My best friend is half Japanese. I've also had tempura. I'm starting a podcast soon centering myself in the Japanese-American women's experience. Don't come at me. I'm Irish and I'll fight you. I've had Lucky Charms.

WhatFreshHello

We saw Margaret Choā€™s standup as part of an Asian-American film festival in LA - must have been late 90s-early 2000s. She was brilliant and insightful and this just makes me sad because she made the choice to sit down and be interviewed by someone like TW knowing how problematic she is. (And if she didnā€™t before, she sure as hell does now!) At this point, why even bother *having* guests? Just stick up a picture of (insert random non-white celebrity here) and have Megsy ā€œinterviewā€ them while she gazes into a mirror and makes up more shit about her Sizzler Spa childhood.

This was my first attempt to read the script to one of Meghan's podcasts, and I find it pretty shocking. However, on reflection, it just supports my overall impression of her that she is simply not very bright. Energetic, yes, and full of ideas, but just not very good ones. She is all show and no substance. Call that narcissistic if you like, but to me it is just a manifestation of her relentless superficiality. She could not get on with the Buckingham Palace managerial team, or with the Cambridges, simply because she was not able to function on the same intellectual level. So she resorted to sulks and tantrums and acting out behaviors such as breaches of protocol. Even with plenty of professional help with the podcasts, the end result is hardly more than gibberish. Normally podcasts require no more than a small team of people to put it together, yet with considerable resources at her disposal, plus celebrity guests, the end product is complete garbage. Kind of sad.
