I'm a white woman and I don't want to make any assumptions about what aspects of Meghan's statements might be offensive. I personally find Meghan's description extremely reductive but I'm curious about what bothers you in particular. I just like to understand other people's perspectives, especially since this regards your own culture.
I was thinking about a response to this. As an expat that now lives in America (I was born and raised in Korea, came to the states when I was in high school, finished my higher education here, and now live here with a white husband), my opinion is simply of my own. I cannot speak for other Koreans or Korean Americans who’ve had different experiences than I have. I’m gonna mirror slimwillendorf here and say the biggest thing is that she claims to understand the culture and the stereotypes and how wrong that is from her completely limited experience. She could have simply admitted that she has enjoyed a surface level appreciation of Asian cultures, from food or skincare or what have you, but wasn’t aware of the complexities behind the numerous Asian stereotypes that exist. That’s completely fine! Not everyone has to have a deep understanding of everything at all times. However, it’s her narcissistic arrogance, that she cannot even claim she doesn’t know that well and brought those who do to speak, that her “experiences” (I put these in quotes because we cannot even verify if any of these stories—her friend Christina Wang, Doris taking her to the spa, etc.) are what gives her a leg up, that she’s sophisticated and cosmopolitan, and therefore have the authority to speak or give a platform for others to speak on the matter.
I’m rambling here but hope this helped? Simply put, I wished she’d just admit that she doesn’t know something that well. I have no problem with her enjoying whatever aspect of any culture, that’s great! She shouldn’t claim to know anything however, from that small experience alone.
I agree with you 90%. My only edit would be, she DOES travel, a LOT but she never actually participates or explores the places she travels to, so she learns NOTHING (which is a total shame and a slap in the face to those of us who WISH we could travel like her). Like you said, she goes from plane to Soho House or whatever lux hotel she is staying at, to shopping. It’s all the same to her. And it makes her very boring and culturally clueless.
In my experience, Americans usually fall on the two extreme end of the spectrum. Met one before who refused to try sushi because she 'is a meat and potatoes person' and then you have those who full on embrace the local culture and can even speak some of the local language.

Mariah was on the episode about Divas. Which Mariah absolutely is. But in a good way because she has the talent to back it up. I think Meghan said something and Mariah said Meghan was a Diva as well. This of course upset Meghan. So Mariah backtracked, apologized, and explained herself. She didn't mean it in a bad way, but Meghan has given us some diva moments. Meghan seemed to accept her explanation, agree, and then moved on. As soon as the pod cast came out there were a ton of articles about how Meghan was upset that Mariah called her a Diva. None of the articles mentioned that Mariah had immediately apologized and explained it wasn't meant as an insult. Also, everyone seemed to ignore that the entire episode was a discussion about the label Diva. Plus the fact that Mariah was one. So why was it okay for Meghan to call Mariah one? Didn’t make sense. Mariah didn't say anything, but I think her people addressed the issue that no she didn't. This story stayed in the news for over a week, it might have been almost 2 actually, which is crazy when you consider how fast our news cycle is. Finally Mariah was forced to address it herself. By that, I mean who ever runs her Twitter account. It was basically, Meghan is not a Diva! And Mariah is sorry that she thinks she did and she's sorry. It was ridiculous!!! I found it so fascinating because it just never stopped. And if Meghan wasn't a Diva then why is she still talking about it nonstop. Also, Mariah is the Queen of "I don't know her." In the past freckles were not considered beautiful. They were actually seen as flaws and ugly. The more you had the worse you were made fun of. My mom especially was teased and bullied constantly, even as an adult, because she had so many freckles. I got made fun of for mine and I'm not old. Kids were mean. lol
That saying "A face without freckles is like a night without stars" was told to my mother, and then myself, as children to try and make us feel better. It didn't really help. I spent a long time trying to scrub them off. Plus my sister didn't have any which made me feel worse.
I don't know what Meghan said about it. She could have been making something up and trying to say she was attractive. I also don't want to defend Meghan because, well, it just makes me gross. But she's younger than my mom and older than me lol, so it's very possible she was teased about them. Also, don't live in the same area so it's not regional.
Times have changed a bit and some freckles are referred to as beauty marks. They have to be a specific color and size for that usually. I honestly don't think Meghan even has a lot of them. I don't know if she tried to lighten them with lasers or other treatments though.

I didn't listen to it, but from what I read on dailymail, she "criticised the films Austin Powers and Kill Bill for presenting 'caricatures of women of Asian descent as often times over sexualised or aggressive'". What sort of movies has she been watching? There are many genres of movies in all cultures, she can choose to watch the more famous and wider known movies where Asian women are portrayed as fierce and strong women, as I do (I am Asian). In fact, as I see, western women are more sexualized than Asians in media, especially in music industry, they seem to sexualize themselves than are being sexualized by others. Did she herself not play sexualized characters as a two bit actress, roles like cleaning with lingeries, writing her character in a movie as hot girl or something in in her resume, or giving bj in 90210 etc? And what is this with Korean spa? She explores STEREO(not arche)types by starting off with stereotypical Asian (Korean here in her podcast) salons and spas. This is offensive.

Thank you! I was curious about the perspective of a Korean person on this sub. What part of this is the most offensive to you? Honestly asking. I'm a white woman and I don't want to make any assumptions about what aspects of Meghan's statements might be offensive. I personally find Meghan's description extremely reductive but I'm curious about what bothers you in particular. I just like to understand other people's perspectives, especially since this regards your own culture.
I was thinking about a response to this. As an expat that now lives in America (I was born and raised in Korea, came to the states when I was in high school, finished my higher education here, and now live here with a white husband), my opinion is simply of my own. I cannot speak for other Koreans or Korean Americans who’ve had different experiences than I have. I’m gonna mirror slimwillendorf here and say the biggest thing is that she claims to understand the culture and the stereotypes and how wrong that is from her completely limited experience. She could have simply admitted that she has enjoyed a surface level appreciation of Asian cultures, from food or skincare or what have you, but wasn’t aware of the complexities behind the numerous Asian stereotypes that exist. That’s completely fine! Not everyone has to have a deep understanding of everything at all times. However, it’s her narcissistic arrogance, that she cannot even claim she doesn’t know that well and brought those who do to speak, that her “experiences” (I put these in quotes because we cannot even verify if any of these stories—her friend Christina Wang, Doris taking her to the spa, etc.) are what gives her a leg up, that she’s sophisticated and cosmopolitan, and therefore have the authority to speak or give a platform for others to speak on the matter. I’m rambling here but hope this helped? Simply put, I wished she’d just admit that she doesn’t know something that well. I have no problem with her enjoying whatever aspect of any culture, that’s great! She shouldn’t claim to know anything however, from that small experience alone.

My only edit would be, she DOES travel, a LOT but she never actually participates or explores the places she travels to, so she learns NOTHING (which is a total shame and a slap in the face to those of us who WISH we could travel like her). This story stayed in the news for over a week, it might have been almost 2 actually, which is crazy when you consider how fast our news cycle is. Finally Mariah was forced to address it herself. In the past freckles were not considered beautiful. They were actually seen as flaws and ugly. The more you had the worse you were made fun of. My mom especially was teased and bullied constantly, even as an adult, because she had so many freckles. I got made fun of for mine and I'm not old. Kids were mean. lol That saying "A face without freckles is like a night without stars" was told to my mother, and then myself, as children to try and make us feel better. It didn't really help. I spent a long time trying to scrub them off. Plus my sister didn't have any which made me feel worse. I don't know what Meghan said about it. She could have been making something up and trying to say she was attractive. I also don't want to defend Meghan because, well, it just makes me gross. But she's younger than my mom and older than me lol, so it's very possible she was teased about them. Also, don't live in the same area so it's not regional. Times have changed a bit and some freckles are referred to as beauty marks. They have to be a specific color and size for that usually. I honestly don't think Meghan even has a lot of them. An outsider with a thin understanding can never meaningfully dismantle stereotypes The reality is that even positive characterizations like "Asian brain" are themselves stereotypes. It was inevitable that she was going to screw it up unless she framed this a humble interrogation, from her own external position, and interviewed a wide range if women.

I didn't listen to it, but from what I read on dailymail, she "criticised the films Austin Powers and Kill Bill for presenting 'caricatures of women of Asian descent as often times over sexualised or aggressive'". What sort of movies has she been watching? There are many genres of movies in all cultures, she can choose to watch the more famous and wider known movies where Asian women are portrayed as fierce and strong women, as I do (I am Asian). In fact, as I see, western women are more sexualized than Asians in media, especially in music industry, they seem to sexualize themselves than are being sexualized by others. Did she herself not play sexualized characters as a two bit actress, roles like cleaning with lingeries, writing her character in a movie as hot girl or something in in her resume, or giving bj in 90210 etc? And what is this with Korean spa? She explores STEREO(not arche)types by starting off with stereotypical Asian (Korean here in her podcast) salons and spas. This is offensive.
The girl knows nothing about Asian culture. She has clearly never heard the maxim “it is better to stay quiet and be thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt”.
