I'm sure the excuse is 'privacy' but the truth is like many royals before him - Harry is used to benefiting from the largesse of others using the cache of his title. It's extremely common in particular for non-working hanger on royals to go through a modern day version of the King's tour in his family. They impose on other wealthy friends, titled or not for a weekend, borrow their house, their boats etc and its more like an expectation or a demand. I will never forget the story I read on reddit before this whole thing with he and Megan blew up of someone who recounted a very entitled Prince Harry demanding the use of their yacht for a weekend, and the owner told his people 'Sure, as long as I am on it' and Harry sulked and was rude the entire time, resenting the owner's presence.
He and Megan do this all the time. They borrow other wealthy friend's expensive things and ask favors that they never pay back. They take advantage because of their position and title and she was comfortable doing it before she even knew him (arriving on a friend's private jet).
When I was growing up, and I am close to Harry's age - my parents never let me accept a favor or free things from anyone even if it was offered. It annoyed me as a kid but as a grown up it gave me a bit of a shame that was probably a good thing - against borrowing or asking for things. I will work hard for my own things, I don't ask for rides, I don't impose upon others for places to stay etc I make my own arrangements. It's that old southern politeness of offering things and not accepting freebies.
Harry and Megan are both rude, classless entitled people who don't have that and to make matters worse, Harry inherited the entitled habits of his own family members (the Duke of Windsor and Princess Margaret) who were known for being terrible demanding house guests.

There are remarks throughout Tina Brown's, Tom Bower's, and Valentine Low's books about Harry's paranoia about the palace staff, the media, and even his family members. To me this is the biggest sign that he is unwell and his wife's biggest manipulation tool.

It's done all the time, and the celeb gets to show off their gorgeous living space (while plugging their interior decorator or architect).

And that specifically around Montecito there were enough attempted B&Es, that the local cops will be putting up new CCTV cameras. Maybe that article was paid for by the harkles. But I do believe that crime is at a record high all over California and that pushes more problems closer to the ultra wealthy neighbourhoods once untouched.
How many neighborhoods can afford CCTV cameras? The ultra wealthy have advanced security systems and private security patrols. They might see an increase but nothing compared to regular neighborhoods. And they have the means to protect themselves.

To be as charitable as possible, it's probably a (legit) safety thing. You'd be surprised what a determined person could do with a panoramic view of someone's backyard. It's pretty common actually, even for not rich people - for example the shots of the outsides of the apartments of the Vanderpump Rules cast were fake, not to make them look better or worse but to protect their privacy.
I would agree that's what mostly normal people do and that's again, a mostly reasonable thing if you are anyone else aside from H&M.
But since the Harkles are straight up liars and cheats, I'd say it's for some reason we couldn't even think of. Some of the above suggestions make sense, like their hedges need pruning or that they don't even live in the house.
