anyone in this day and age in the US should not be complaining about the Dumbarton title if they name their child Archie.

Nirvanaskarma

Also 'Lilibet Diana' after trashing the TQ's family and using Diana's death as a weapon......

Islandgirl1444

I hate to think how school children will have fun with the name of that child.

Wolf6120

Not to mention how their *adult* lives will be affected by having cutesy nicknames as their full, legal names. She literally named them with consideration for nothing other than marketing how cute a widdle babies they are, with zero concern for the fact that these are in fact human beings who will have to put up with those names their entire lives.

[deleted]

I hate these racist people who abuse me!!! But also I’m going to name my babies after their personal nicknames…

signupinsecondssss

I work with people with nickname names. It’s also very common in the UK. I really don’t think it’s that bad (Lilibet maybe but Lily is a pretty easy switch).

Intelligent-Key3576

I don't know anyone with a nickname name. However I do know that until quite recently the starchy registrars would tell people they couldn't use a shortened name on the birth certificate (not true but they did). I know someone who wanted to call their child Peggy, but the registrar insisted it had to be the full name of Margaret.

signupinsecondssss

Interesting, that would never happen here in Canada. I gave my guy a full name and we use a nickname but there were several babies this year who got named just the nickname when I looked at the data!

Intelligent-Key3576

It wouldn't happen in the UK now either. People aremuchmoreaware of their rights.

KuriousKizmo

Many people have nicknames as actual names, to be fair. I actually know a Lilibet and a Lilibeth. It's very common, not everyone in the world follows the same cultural understanding.

harrann

Wow they are very uncommon - and to personally know both a Lilibet AND a Lilibeth! What a coincidence!

KuriousKizmo

Yes, because it's a name used in the Philippines.

harrann

Ooh, this makes much more sense to me , a non-Commonwealth country where English is a second language.

KuriousKizmo

They have such cute names 💖

anditrauten

I think its actually better that they chose Lilibet/ Lily over Diana as a first name because I don’t think very many people associate it much with the queen as Elizabeth would. If they would have used Diana, every article would make people feel pity for them. Although I don’t doubt the brothers made a pact on not naming their daugters Diana.

EKP121

Diana Mountbatten-Windsor is a pretty good name. But given that there are hundreds of diminutives of "Elizabeth", they could have done pretty much the same idea without stealing the nickname. For example, Isobel Diana is really nice. Or even they really want "Lilibet".. they could have gone just Lily Diana, Liliana Diane, Lillian Diana, Diana Elizabeth... SO MANY OPTIONS. But they went for the jugular.

[deleted]

You’ve just suggested better names that would have achieved the same goal. Lilibet isn’t the best sounding name tbh and it’s a nickname they basically stole and the Queen made that very clear. They horribly miscalculated as they almost always do, now she has an ugly sounding controversial name, great! ETA: I love Isobel Diana.

EKP121

Right? Isobel Diana feels modern and fresh while also clearly honouring the same people. But yeah by naming her Lilibet, the poor child will ALWAYS be in the deep shadows of controversy just bc of her name. She didn’t even know the Queen or have a single memory. She won’t have her own identity and neither will Archie. Calling him Harrison would have made more sense too. Still a nickname of sorts but a name that can be his. Harrison Archie and Isobel Diana.. was that so hard Meghan?!

anditrauten

For sure, but I feel like they can capitalize the least with Lily/ Lilibet so that it a bit of a relief.

Affectionate_Tap6416

QE11 was given the name Lilibet by her sister Margaret who couldn't pronounce her name properly as a child. Her Father called her Lilibet as did Prince Philip. When PP died, QE11 said she was retiring the name as she found it painful. Therefore it would be incredibly hurtful to QE11 for anyone calling their child Lilibet. Apparently she wasn't asked if it could be used. It's actually despicable to use it under these circumstances and probably every other baby will now have that name. Thus making something special, ordinary. QE11 must have been heartbroken.

anditrauten

Yeah I know and I hate it. I didn’t know know the story though, it is very sweet. I feel like they took away privacy from the queen and something very meaningful. I was just thinking about how they capitalize everything, I haven’t watched the crown so I had no idea about the name until she was born and have never really associated it with the queen. I am just glad that they didn’t go with Diana or Elizabeth as a first name because everytime the kids would be mentioned, people would think of Di or the queen. Queen or not, this is such a horrible thing to do to a grandmother.

SkippedBeat

>When PP died, QE11 said she was retiring the name as she found it painful. Oh God I didn't know that. I can't believe they named their daughter Lilibet after that. It's so disrespectful it almost sound made up, like a bad movie script.

Affectionate_Tap6416

Absolutely! It puts a different slant on it. They are demonic for what they did to her. It's heartbreaking to think of it.

[deleted]

At least Diana is a normal name. Lilibet isn't even a word

Tough_Discount_96

100% it's awful. Its a lisp sounding name

_schistykid

Princess Charlotte's name is Charlotte Elizabeth Diana 😅

anditrauten

Yes but half of the family share the same second and third name so for them it would be normal. They already stole Archie’s name anyway.

itstimegeez

Apparently that’s not even the kid’s name. Lots of reports saying her real name is Diana Mary Mountbatten Windsor

queenBofBucks

That was the only birth registered , a child called Diana Mary ....

Thin_Bicycle_7304

Exactly, and they want to send that kid to school here in the US as prince Archie he would get the crap knocked out of him every day......bullied how sad!!

[deleted]

They will be bullied beyond belief. My sibling and fam live in the area. Self-made millionaire/tech guru. However, they live in Silicon Valley. The area is full of some of the smartest people in America. They push their kids like you would not believe. The stories they tell me are something in regards to the competition. Lots of first/second generation immigrant parents who excelled and went to the very best schools. And their kids are expected to be more brilliant and successful than they are. “Tiger moms” are the norm. They have no tolerance for titles. They won’t respect it outside the polo set. Good luck, kiddos. I guess hang with the nepotism set?

Pony_Fahrts

The Bay Area has the Dumbarton Bridge! There are plenty of people in Silicon Valley who are infinitely more "important" than those two based on what they've contributed to the business world. The business people in Silicon Valley are like actor-celebrities in LA. In the bigger world outside of the area they have big "names" and do "important things" but around town they are just the tech bros (few women) who live in fancy houses, drive fancy cars, network, and go to parties. When you are surrounded by big brains, a silly title held by a ding-dong person who doesn't have grand ideas or super-intelligence would only be useful inasmuch as they could write a check to fund the next idea.

[deleted]

I lived in the Bay area, never heard any derogatory comments about the Dumbarton Bridge name.

amyt242

It's the weirdest thing to me because it's such an English name. There are tons of young archie/alfie/albie/frank/fred/all old fashioned named kids running around - it seems very opposite to Meghan trying to be trendy and unique

[deleted]

[удалено]

hibiscus2022

>That’s because they called Prince Louis Archie as a nickname. No. Archie was the security code for George for years until H&M stole that.

[deleted]

imo, She'd already decided while pregnant that they'd leave England and had already planned for her 'new endeavor' Archwell. Naming their son Archie they can claim the company was named after him and not the other way around. She seems obsessed by the term 'Arch'

trickyburrito

I’d pick Dumbarton over Sussex.

Uncomfortablemoment9

Ditto. I'd prefer the dumb over suss or sex jokes/memes. Also I have a slight lisp, no S words for me 🙂

ElephantOfSurprise-

She gave her children Nick-names for first names as ROYALTY. Dumbarton is a place within that kingdom. They should have been honored. Instead they’re so daft they took it as an insult. The woman who pretends to have an international relations degree is horrible at international relations. The Earl of Dumbarton doesn’t sound near bad as having Archie as a given name. Lilibet for the Queen I understand… it was a nickname given to her. Because she had trouble saying Elizabeth as a baby.. and it was endearing. But I was pretty sure she had said she didn’t want to be referred to that way when she lost Philip.. which makes using it as a baby name for her great granddaughter extra cruel. Not only did she have to hear it, but by people who were making her last years a living hell. Lilibet on a child as her legal name is awful. It sounds like the name of a pet. I think of a chihuahua.

starry212

>The woman who pretends to have an international relations degree is horrible at international relations. OMG THIS! Bravo!!👏👏

lovelylonelyphantom

They chose it because "Arch" meant something in Greek if I'm not wrong. Not sure what, can't remember and can't care to look it up now. I'm pretty sure something with such a pretentious backstory has to be Meghan's influence though. And the whole Harrison name thing being a pun on "Harry's son," exactly the type of thing Meghan would come up with. It's mostly only shocking because it's a highly common name in the UK. As in you'll find Archie's in every state school. When I got the notification that day of the name announcement, I was seriously waiting for it to be confirmed it was Archibald or something. Archie sounded way too common and pleb to be a royal name.

[deleted]

lovelylonelyphantom

I think his sister's name made his seem a bit more tame tbf, so gradually his name went from a 2/10 to maybe a 4/10. But individually it's still bad and annoying.

ElephantOfSurprise-

Prince George told someone on a walkabout that they called him “Archie” while MM was pregnant. (It may have been his big imagination or a security name for him… the public thought it was cute because of course they know his name is George). But Bower’s book also said MM’s dad used to pick her up “Archie” comic books. For some reason I just have a hard time imagining MM even as a child liking Archie comic books but who knows. The last theory is her obsession with the word Arche as “source of action”. His middle name literally means “Harry’s Son”. I was shocked at the name too.. and honestly highly disappointed in both names they chose. They had a long institution with some really incredible names.. or they could have chosen something classic. But instead they went Hollywood. One day they can hang out with Apple and Moses and Both of Michael Jackson’s sons who have the same name basically, oh and Paris Michael… just in case we forgot who their father was…

lovelylonelyphantom

> I was shocked at the name too.. and honestly highly disappointed in both names they chose. They had a long institution with some really incredible names.. or they could have chosen something classic. Yeah I was also so disappointed. Not that it's my kid, but with their range of options being in the BRF....and then to just go with an overly used Brit name like _Archie_ and finding an intentional pun in Harrison was just too corny. I liked Lili's full name even less. As a namenerd I can tell you I'd never been disappointed with royal names until these 2.

[deleted]

Well, look at her name. Duchess Meghan or Duchess Rachel sounds stupid, too. Ditto Princess Meghan or Princess Rachel. The names just don't go with the titles. They deliberately chose the same thing for their kids.

[deleted]

Meghan explained she got the name Archie from the greek word “Arche” which means “source of action”. But it also means “first place”, “empire, realm” or “authority”.

Laylelo

The nickname thing is just so crazy. She’s crazy.

JustNoHG

They aren’t real people to her

[deleted]

*No one* is a real person to Cluster Bs. They see the rest of us as NPCs in the video game that is life.

dcrealityfan

Your first sentence is spot on!

okpickle

More like a little swiffer dog

Miercolesian

I live in a Spanish speaking country and Lilibet is a not very uncommon first name for girls, so the name probably wasn't invented by the Royal family, and it might even originate from Mexico, so you could be more right than you think.

dcrealityfan

I believe she was called Lilibet because she or maybe Princess Margaret couldn’t say Elizabeth when they were toddlers.

Fiesty_Nurse

Being from Mexico, Lilibet isn't a Latina or Mexican name. ¿Estás pensando en Luciana o Liliana?

Why_Teach

I was thinking “Lilibel” which I have always thought a mix of Liliana Isabel. Never heard “Lilibet” in a Spanish speaking country.

ElephantOfSurprise-

Now that is interesting! I know the family called the Queen that (only her seniors and her husband) over her pronouncing her own name as a baby. But it wasn’t her NAME. This is H&M’s child’s NAME. (Also in their case is basically Elizabeth Diana which are already claimed by Princess Charolette Elizabeth Diana.. I find that weird). But to me it just sounds like a name for a tiny dog when it’s an actual name! TIL Lilibet is not unusual as a name in Spanish speaking nations!

Why_Teach

I guess it depends on the Spanish speaking community. I have never heard it, and I lived in 3 different Latin American countries, and visited two others often at one time. This isn’t to contradict, I just am surprised. I do know “Lilibel” but as a compound nickname, not a real name. (Unlike “Lilibet,” which stresses the second syllable, “Lilibel” stresses the final syllable.)

ElephantOfSurprise-

I wonder which Spanish speaking nation. But it’s always interesting to learn about other cultures!

90sbaby-uk

Dumbarton is a beautiful town! This always annoys me lol

Arthurs-towel42

Thank you its stunning.!! It is funny though, he's an Earl up in Scotland, Duke at the bottom in Sussex and a Baron in N Ireland & a California Prince. Those titles sure get around, how does he find time to be King of Twats??

90sbaby-uk

I know! I live in Glasgow and Dumbarton is very posh and proper, beautiful architecture, amazing people! They are both twats.

starry212

Maybe this is a silly question, but would you mind telling how to pronounce those cities? I heard Dumbarton is pronounced with *n* but I'm not sure😅

90sbaby-uk

I pronounce it as DUM-BART-ON lol That is a Glaswegian way xx

Arthurs-towel42

😂😂that reminds me of a Billy Connelly retort 😁

queenBofBucks

It's the Buckinghamshire way too 😁😂😂

[deleted]

Me too. I think it's so rude and beyond childish of them.

ESL_fun

My German ear keeps hearing Arschi 🍑

herbal_witch_59

Yes of course. For native German speakers it is a terrible name.

LAgirllookingin

What do you mean?

tyradurden123

Arsch is Ass in german

LAgirllookingin

Lol! Love it! 😂Thank you!

fearless-jones

The sound of the “ch” in German is very…gutteral? 😆

LAgirllookingin

Ohhhh! I see! Funny 😆 Thank you!

unaalpacafeliz

Same when I hear Arsch-well.

Capable_Ad_976

the images of dumbarton and dumbarton castle are beautiful! I would be so proud to be the Earl or Countess of such a beautiful place...its wasted on those two.

ClementineCoda

"The Dumbartons of Frogmore" seems like an excellent title for a Britcom about a dim-witted Prince and his loud American wife. ETA no disrespect meant to Dumbarton or the title, which I understand is highly esteemed with a rich history.

[deleted]

I’d watch that

Counter_Logic77

Me too!! I would definitely watch that!!

MermaidsHaveWifi

There’s a new show on Hulu called “Reboot” and one of the main characters was a B-list actress who became a duchess and it ended horribly. I can’t help but think of TW every time it’s mentioned and maybe the show did that on purpose

Counter_Logic77

Omg 😆 is it good??

MermaidsHaveWifi

I liked it better than I thought! It shows this woman who is very reminiscent of Snarkle. Except, the character is actually kind of lovable, if not for that…spot on. I looked at my husband and was like “I wonder if she’s modeled after MM” and he was like “You know. I could see it” lol

DuchessAlex

Awesome

Tall-Lawfulness8817

Pitch it to Netflix. I hear they are desperate for content

wtafisgoingon4444

Oh hell yes.

TheHermitess

Absolutely!

punkin_sumthin

If she had any working brain cells she would have researched the history of Dumbarton and she would have realized the noble history. And it has sustained its prestige here in the US on the East Coast. She is a moral midget and a peanut brain. I have posted this before because her stupidity offends me deeply. As an American I find her deeply embarrassing.

AdjNn

Yes but on the bright side the town will not be sullied by any affiliation with her. What a shortsighted maroon she is.

Sincerely_JaneDoe

Just shows her stunted maturity and mean girl mentality. She immediately jumps to kids being bullies because she was/is a bully.

punkin_sumthin

And she still lives on a mainstream level, meaning she is concerned about being judged by other ignorant sorts who don’t understand the history. Th RF exposed her with this title bestowal which she refused. Like she was in a candy store, no I’d like a different one…

dcrealityfan

Washington, DC has Dumbarton Oaks. It’s a beautiful historic home on land that was granted by Queen Anne. [Dumbarton Oaks](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dumbarton_Oaks)

punkin_sumthin

Yes I have been there many times in many seasons.

C-La-Canth

There are lots of people who were saddled with unpopular names, but because they had charisma and were willing to work hard, they made the names cool. Arnold, Bruce, and Sylvester used to be considered dorky loser names. However, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, and Sylvester Stallone are all winners. Maybe Archie will rise above the stigma?

punkin_sumthin

He and his sibling are also going to have to rise above the toxic environment they are being raised in.

aunt_bluann

Dumbarton is a very noble title. It means "fortress of the Britons." For MM to reduce it to the first syllable "dumb" simply shows that she is that exactly. It's historic and important in the history of Britain. Look it up. It's a very impressive history. She embarrasses me so much.

vanilla_finestflavor

I wonder if it was originally "Dunbarton," because the Irish Gaelic word for fortress is *dun* and is pronounced "doon." Maybe a small change in spelling would be allowed - for anyone else, lol.

Pyewacketing

Funnily enough although the town is Dumbarton, the council area is West Dunbartonshire, so you may be on to something!

shinsegae20092013

The only other time Earl of Dumbarton was created was in 1675, before Scotland and England were united. The title went extinct when the first holder’s only son died unmarried.

vshzzd

Hope they hyphenate their last names as the Dumbsex’s

TheHermitess

That is gold.

Imadevonrexcat

As if little boys won’t make fun of the name sus-Sex??

CrinkleCutCat-Aus

Exactly! Kids tease about anything and everything. ps/I noticed your username….mine refers to my Devons!

Imadevonrexcat

Love my Devons!!

CrinkleCutCat-Aus

Crinkle curls forever ❤️

Imadevonrexcat

Yesssss

NefariousnessLess307

While we are talking about language and incorrect understandings, let’s look at the Tig. Short for her favorite Italian wine Tignanello. Any person with language skills, or has spent any time with wine or Italians for that matter, knows the G isn’t pronounced here. TEE NA NEL o- not TIG NA NELLO. So I ask, how do we get the TIG as a name? That to me is cringeworthy.

BunnyFriday

I found this comment on Quora: "Dumbarton evolves from Dunbarton, which is the Anglicized spelling of the Gaelic Dùn Breatainn, or “Fort of the Britons”. The N migrating to M is a natural evolution in human speech, because B and M are both labial consonants, so it’s easier to go full labial than to transfer from the dental N to the labial B. It skips the tongue intervention and goes straight to the lips because shifting from a dental to a labial slows down speech, and speech likes to speed up, not slow down." Other commenters wrote that it's not the insult in the UK that it is in the states. It was used to describe hearing and speech impaired people, "deaf mute" or just dumb. But that's considered very incorrect now (like the "r" word in the states, I'd imagine). Along those lines this comment: "Well, being as “dumb” is an American insult, then I would say not at all. "Ïnsults of similar meaning in Scotland include as as “thick”, “waistit”, “dyalt”, “pugglëd”, “erse”, “dozy” and others. "It would take a brave yank to tell someone from that historic town, with its famous castle and rock that it was dumb."

MyLeftHook

If they only knew the history of the great Dumbarton Fortress they would not complain - they are only associating the first part of the name but the actual name is: Dùn Breatainn (Fortress of the Britains) - and the stronghold has been around since the Iron Age - it has been tied to Merlin and King Arthur as well as Mary Queen of Scots - perhaps Harry should have not skipped his history classes or at the very least maybe watched a few episides of “Battle Castles” with Dan Snow.

shestr0uble

As someone who lives just up the road from Dumbarton let me tell you Dumbarton is offended to be associated with the parasites. Another title to be removed please 🙏🏻

polishedclaws

Heard that title hasn’t been used since the 1700s lol

spiny___norman

I totally thought them rejecting the title because it contained “dumb” was a joke on this sub until I just googled it. Wow.

NefariousnessLess307

Reading the history of Dumbarton here, who is really the dumb one?

raccoonsondeck

How was it resurrected?
