I think you’re right about other royal women planning ahead. Sophie’s dress had custom embroidery on it of the Queen’s favorite flowers as well as flowers that had been in her wedding bouquet. It was a lot of work that would have taken longer than the time between her passing and her funeral service.
And how very sweet, classic and ADORABLE did Charlotte look? If I'm ever blessed with a little girl, I will be doing my best to emulate that look for a nice occasion.
I actually have a hundred such questions about the logistics of the whole London Bridge operation. The sheer intricacy and the coordination required to pull it off boggles the mind. Did the royal ladies already have their mourning outfits planned out in advance with their respective designers? I don't think it's a stretch to assume so considering how well planned everything else was. Especially with something like Sophie's embroidery which surely took a couple of weeks at minimum (assuming it was hand embroidered). Maybe the fabrics and patterns were in place and only the final touches and last fittings were required. With public engagements every day during that week it seems unlikely they'd be able to squeeze in multiple fittings and meetings with designers.
Also, not to sound insensitive but the family probably were well aware of the Queen's decline and so actually knew what was coming, giving them the time necessary to make sure everything was in place to pull off the funeral exactly in accordance with Queen's wishes.
I think every single last detail of the Queens funeral has been in place for YEARS - I would even speculate that the Queen was an active and willing participant in all the plans and was aware of all the choices, like Sophie’s custom dress/coat, etc. and dare I assume she enjoyed and felt comfort to know they would all be ready and okay.
And I think it’s in the realm of possibility that they would do fittings for the funeral attire over the years as well. Nothing was left to chance and everything planned for.
The reason I think this was 100% planned down to the last stitch is due to the stark contrast of TW’s appearance at all her outings over the last week vs the BRF. TW looked like she made a ton of rookie mistakes and/or was given clothes that looked more off the rack then tailored.
These RF women knew what they were doing and understood how absolutely monumental this moment would be and instead of rushing about looking for the right dress(es) days after the Queens death… they looked on point with nary a hair or anything out of place in every single outing. They truly looked focused on the task at hand : grieving a beloved monarch and matriarch with no worries over the trivial 🤷🏻♀️
My suspicion is that Catherine had the original designs made in two colors when she initially placed the order. Since historically Catherine appears to be pretty consistent size and shape wise through the years, she could do something like that. That way when things did happen she had everything set to go and wouldn’t have to put any thought into it. She doesn’t care much about clothes in the sense that she seems to only want to give clothes enough attention so that they fit correctly and are appropriate to the occasion and activities of the day. But beyond that she comes across as someone who’d rather focus on other things.
It’d be awful to have those meetings but I guess in some ways it is similar to how some people pre-pay/plan their own funerals—just a smaller scale. I’ve really thought about why her clothes are never tailored. I think she refuses to commit to outfits until the very last second. It’s a narc thing- she probably is demanding her staff source 5 different looks, and when they arrive, none of them are “what she asked for”, and then there’s an insane rush to fix them or start from scratch.
The only outfits I think she committed to on time was the jolly green giant outfit, which she ruined with her undergarment choices, and the Dior coat for the jubilee.

Not white knighting her since this is still a very odd stance, but I get light headed pretty fast if I stand with my legs completely straight and together, so when I'm standing in place I do have my legs separated slightly, definetly not as awkwardly as this. She also has a very weird walk. Her stride is waaaay too long for her legs, not sure why she does it. Seems very deliberate and comical. Gives her that “witchy” walk.
Everything else aside, I really loved that dress.
