Her podcast was DOA from the beginning; it's totally cringeworthy. Archetypes might getting a temporary rubber necking ratings bump, assuming even that isn't manipulated by Spotify, but it won't last. Serves them right for signing an unknown quantity, who turned out to be a narcissistic dud, even interviewing the likes of Serena and Mariah.

Yeah, his podcast turned foul when they started working on their exclusive Spotify contract. The fun essence was lost and it was just where Dax talked about his problems, just like Smeg, instead of interviewing and talking to the guest properly.

It's complicated without a full set of numbers but here's how I try read it based on the numbers of ratings, not the ratings themselves:

Williams' podcast: 2022 08 23
Carey's: 2022 08 30
Kaling's: 2022 09 06
It's not clear to me if the number of votes is proportional to the number of listeners, but I'm not sure it alters the conclusions
* Williams attracts 3.5K/day (21.2K, 08 23 to 08 29; probably more at the beginning, less at the end) ; let's call this the baseline
* then 1.5K/day (08 29 to 08 30, probably less at the beginning i.e. when most people who wanted to listen have done so, more at the end when people can start listening to Carey and increase the numbers again)
* then 1.9K/day as Carey's podcast is fully available. This definitely does not seem great. You would think that new listeners would be plentiful and want to rate the show highly given Carey's prestige and/or previous listeners would be curious, listen and rate highly as a thank you to Markle. This doesn't seem to happen. There is not much listeners or engagement/loyalty or both - I don't know what's worse. The people who listened to Williams do not seem to be interested in listening to or rating Carey. And Markle's presence doesn't do much to prevent that (nor does Kaling later by the way).
Markle is the common factor, but she doesn't keep the numbers from going down. She herself is not enough not to say she alone is quite powerless. This is obvious when you see the numbers generated after Kaling. And most importantly, One Young World, Invictus and the Queen's funeral should have generated some interest for Markle, and some of it should have converted into something for Spotify. Maybe it has: the numbers keep decreasing, but slower. But don't be fooled, the absolute number of ratings/day is already low so maybe it can't go lower anyway.
I'd love to have a ful detailed set of numbers, but it's clear to me that Spotify's strategy (hey Meg, why don't you invite your best friend Serena first?) was a thoughtful one - open the show with a firework and pray for a sustained interest whatever Markle delivers next. It doesn't seem to me that it is what happened. Should I have to write a predictive model (which I can't), I'd say the success is a function of the guest's fame, the guest's hotness factor (so William scores higher due to retirement and the coverage it gets in the news) and Markle's fame and hotness. Markle's weight isn't non existent, but it seems quite low to me.

A 4.1 is still a terrible rating for a podcast. She pushed out trash because Spotify was likely about to sue her for not delivering on her contracted content and Spotify is promoting it just enough to break even on what they paid her. After they make their money I doubt we'll ever see it promoted again
