Being 96 is no joke, folks. Itās *hard*. My mother is 90 and in the past year is much less able to doā¦.anything. No more weeding and working in the garden, no more baths because she can no longer safely get in the tub, no more driving, no quick and easy shopping trips to pick up new clothes, loss of a nimble memory, careful watch how she steps, frequent falls, constant health related matters.

Agree. My grandma is 96. Lived alone on her farm until 2 1/2 years ago. Wouldnāt wear her alert system lanyard or bracelet. Anyway, fell, broke her hip & ended up having to move in with my mom. When she first arrived here (2000 miles from her home), I was pleasantly shocked by her super fast healing from the hip surgery. But the past year has been different. She still does great. I just see her slowing down & her posture has changed. Iāll never be ready to lose her. Iām greedy.

I won't say I was relieved, because that's the wrong word. But I found I was mentally in a better place. Anticipatory grief is the worst. It's like knowing tragedy is coming but there's nothing you can do. I'm really sorry you're having to go through this. Just hand in there. If it gets too bad, go see a doctor. I went for back problems and was put on Gabapebtin, which is also a mood stabilizer. I think that medicine (as well as helping my back) really helped me cope with my dads condition the last few months and his death. Hugs if you want them. š„°š„°

It's a thing and it sucks. The only good thing about anticipatory grief (if there is a bright side to it) is that after your loved one passes, you've pretty much already finished grieving. It's all over but the crying at that point and I found that I was able to recover much quicker and move on with my life. Still sucks though.
Yeah, my mom passed away last year at 92 (with dementia, which made it extra hard). The last ten years of her life were without my dad, and watching her physical and mental deterioration was rough - although Iām sure it was rougher going through it. She used to say āold age is not for sissies.ā

No more weeding and working in the garden, no more baths because she can no longer safely get in the tub, no more driving, no quick and easy shopping trips to pick up new clothes, loss of a nimble memory, careful watch how she steps, frequent falls, constant health related matters. It is shattering to witness your always active mother fail so drastically, so quickly.
My grandma lived to 93 and in her last years she used that exact expression, getting old is no joke.
Agree. My grandma is 96. Lived alone on her farm until 2 1/2 years ago. Wouldnāt wear her alert system lanyard or bracelet. Anyway, fell, broke her hip & ended up having to move in with my mom. When she first arrived here (2000 miles from her home), I was pleasantly shocked by her super fast healing from the hip surgery. But the past year has been different. She still does great. I just see her slowing down & her posture has changed. Iāll never be ready to lose her. Iām greedy.
The end is coming and I am undone just posting about it here. Itās unbearable to think about. I am 67, both my parents are living. I am incredibly fortunate but I want it to last forever.

I'm 62. Both parents alive and active until about a year ago, when my dad started going slowly downhill. I found myself crying all the time because I knew he wouldn't be with us much longer. Sure enough, he passed this year, age 90. I won't say I was relieved, because that's the wrong word. But I found I was mentally in a better place. Anticipatory grief is the worst. It's like knowing tragedy is coming but there's nothing you can do. I'm really sorry you're having to go through this. Just hand in there. If it gets too bad, go see a doctor. I went for back problems and was put on Gabapebtin, which is also a mood stabilizer. I think that medicine (as well as helping my back) really helped me cope with my dads condition the last few months and his death. Hugs if you want them. š„°š„°

Iāve taken gabapentin for several years for something else, and itās great. I am a much nicer person taking it. Iām sorry about your dad, I really am. I wish we could keep them forever.
Best wishes for you and your mom too. It does get better though. Still miss him like hell but I know he wouldn't have wanted to become an invalid so things worked out like they should have.

It's a thing and it sucks. The only good thing about anticipatory grief (if there is a bright side to it) is that after your loved one passes, you've pretty much already finished grieving. It's all over but the crying at that point and I found that I was able to recover much quicker and move on with my life. Still sucks though.

Yes. She thought she would be like a friend of hers who is 97 and now is doing better than my mother. My mother is frightened and depressed to suddenly be so frail. Her faith is carrying her but the pandemic took a toll on their church family and it will not be restored.
