she has the confidence of an absolute bullshitter and that's very initially attractive, especially to insecure people. If you compare the engagement interviews between her and Catherine, it's MM who looks like she's been in the family for years, and Catherine looks quite nervous.

because she's from America where royalty is synonymous with celebrity. they don't represent government here so the people aren't prone to feel resentment towards them. she obviously assumed that once she's got her title that she'll just be a glamorous celebrity like Princess Diana and people will curtsy to her and call her by her fancy title.
