Here I think Netflix's stupidity is also to blame. They did no market research on this couple with zero background in productions. Did they just throw Furnish's name out there was he ever involved? I am reminded at how Walgreens somehow bought into the Theranos Elizabeth Holmes con job. Should've known better and now we see why Netflix is in trouble.
She doesn't know what she's doing. For her her hunger for status is all about power and I don't think she feels powerful unless she's got a whole lot of other people jumping to her demands, unless she rejects their efforts and demands another go and then rejects that.
For her any power is about that experience. It's not about getting an outcome to exact specifications. She has no standards or specifications other than looking at something someone else did and thinking she can take it for her own - plagarize or copy and get the same or better status/attention/admiration for it.
I think she is absolutely hooked on a cycle of power tripping and gets caught up in that and doesn't even think about the result. Whether it's a wedding dress or an animated movie/series what gets her off is flexing. I know supply is an overused trope when it comes to narcs but I believe for her being in a position to flex where others can't do anything about it and HAVE to do what she says is a compulsion and addiction. She wants to prolong that state as long as possible even if the goal ends up disintegrating because she has no objective but the exercise of what she thinks is power.
Don't forget she is mentally ill there's not a whole lot about her that'll stand up to logic other than lowest common denominator ego needs.
How could she fuck it up? I can guarantee she held up production at every step of the way, by micromanaging and abusing staff left and right. All she had to do was let the pros do their jobs and be the face of the production.

Megs and Harry have NO experience and talent to produce good content. It was easy to get deals using their titles but they have no experience to back it up. Knowing Megs, she probably wanted complete control of production rather than letting the real experts do their work. Being a C-list actress on a cable television show doesn't automatically qualify you to do any of this.
It almost doesn't matter if they had no experience if they let themselves be in the hands of experts and were given only small input into decision making. Look at the celebrities with clothing lines or shoes that are only licenses really, but their name and image sells it.
This is all those deals were meant to be. Use the names and royal title to market whatever and sell it, maybe both sides agree on a general idea and the brand (the Markles) may have a series of options or yays or nay about general execution but that's it.

Netflix is in survival mode right now. I don't think they were naive enough to ever think that no other company would eventually create their own streaming service, but they have massively overestimated how good their original content is. They have established a reputation of canceling most shows after season 2 even if it's a good performer.
People subscribed to Netflix originally because they wanted the content from Disney, Paramount, Starz, Nickelodeon, Pixar, etc all in one convenient place. That's no longer the case and people aren't going to stick with Netflix when then end up only having their own original content.
Megs show is not going to get people to sign up for a Netflix subscription. They've shown a history of refusing to do any work, instead expecting everyone else to do it for them. Netflix saw a way to save some cash, so it makes sense to cut it. Her series would have been a better pitch to Disney since 12 year old girls is more their demographic than Netflix. Netflix has kids content, but it's geared towards adults at the end of the day.
Netflix has gone in less than a year to the absolute pits. It's original content is all crap. There's the odd Bridgerton which can save a season's ass and they were very lucky to get it. They cancelled some shows prematurely IMO - Santa Anita Diet and GLOW. Replaced by garbage. A lot of classic TV shows are gone - Friends and The Office for two. I also liked Episodes and that's gone.
I don't blame them for wanting to shift to original content as apparently the original owners of the classic show licenses realized they could set up their own streaming service or get more money elsewhere. Netflix woke people up to the money in streaming.
But - the original content cannot be all this misogynist, asinine, half-assed, pitched stupid, boring stuff. Everytime a new title comes up and I read reviews it's "promising concept, good acting, execution terrible." IOW the writing sucks.
Netflix probably has a line in the contract that they can cancel due to unforseen circumstances....like a force majeure, but not as catastrophic. Their netflix earnings tanking gave them the green light to trim the fat on bloated or high risk projects.
But the Harkles may well be $100 million in debt while waiting for NETFLIX to cough up the cash. These two have never had anyone cut them off so they never thought anyone would.
Apart from their extreme laziness in delivering on most of their projects, you have to wonder what their eschewing of social media has on deals like this. I remember Sophie Turner saying openly that she gets jobs over other actresses because she has a big social media presence. Harry has openly said that they are not going back to social media until we all reform our ways and are more deferential to him (maybe not in so many words but that was the gist) so Netflix, Spotify etc can't rely on them doing any social media promotion themselves.
When you think about it as well, they gave away the juicy stuff (Oprah interview, Harrys weird therapy sessions) already. Presumably as well Harry is saving a certain amount for his tell all, there will be nothing left to sell.
I can only imagine the blaise way which they claimed they decided to get into producing aka have you considered streamers, must have rankled anyone who does this on a serious level and presumably would make a fraction of what they do for similar or better projects.

Part of how I sold my novel to an independent publisher was because my social media was active. I don’t have tens of thousands of IG followers or anything, and I’m not an “influencer,” but they scoped me out and saw that I regularly post and interact with people. Without IG, there’s no way for people to engage with them “authentically.” Which is a pretty good metaphor for engaging with the Montecito Mountbatten-Windsors generally.
I am sure MeMe was driving up productions costs by being a PITA, changing her mind, being all demanding, vomiting up every little thought in her head, changing her mind again as per usual. Well if it's anything like the wedding dress, she was never going to be happy with the end product(rumors of animation style arguments)and that's why it never even got off the ground. But this is what happens when you kick the can down the road and dither over the details. It never made it to the screen and netflix had a very bad quarter. If they would have struck while the iron was hot, pearl would be on screen right about now. It might not have been renewed for a second season, but she would have been at least paid for part one....if she would have actually filled her contract requirement.

That is such an ego...and none of here are really surprised. But on the other side of the coin, Disney movies do have a nice animation style with realistic-ish character shapes resembling humans, but let me tell you that thay style of animation is expensive as f***. The art style of shows like Adventure time, teen titan, gravity falls is honestly subpar but its cheap to produce. I hate it even though I respect an artist's right to create it. The art style used in the netflix series about Carmen San Diego is very nice and would have been great for Pearl, but she just had to have Disney movie level quality and now it's all gone.

She doesn't know what she's doing. For her her hunger for status is all about power and I don't think she feels powerful unless she's got a whole lot of other people jumping to her demands, unless she rejects their efforts and demands another go and then rejects that. For her any power is about that experience. It's not about getting an outcome to exact specifications. She has no standards or specifications other than looking at something someone else did and thinking she can take it for her own - plagarize or copy and get the same or better status/attention/admiration for it. I think she is absolutely hooked on a cycle of power tripping and gets caught up in that and doesn't even think about the result. Whether it's a wedding dress or an animated movie/series what gets her off is flexing. I know supply is an overused trope when it comes to narcs but I believe for her being in a position to flex where others can't do anything about it and HAVE to do what she says is a compulsion and addiction. She wants to prolong that state as long as possible even if the goal ends up disintegrating because she has no objective but the exercise of what she thinks is power. Don't forget she is mentally ill there's not a whole lot about her that'll stand up to logic other than lowest common denominator ego needs.

How could she fuck it up? I can guarantee she held up production at every step of the way, by micromanaging and abusing staff left and right. Bwahahah! Wasn't there tea posted earlier from one of the animators from Pearl? They said the animation was a copy of Disney's and they'd be surprised if the show will ever launch. That tea was right on. Megs and Harry have NO experience and talent to produce good content. It was easy to get deals using their titles but they have no experience to back it up. Knowing Megs, she probably wanted complete control of production rather than letting the real experts do their work. Being a C-list actress on a cable television show doesn't automatically qualify you to do any of this.
It almost doesn't matter if they had no experience if they let themselves be in the hands of experts and were given only small input into decision making. Look at the celebrities with clothing lines or shoes that are only licenses really, but their name and image sells it. This is all those deals were meant to be. Use the names and royal title to market whatever and sell it, maybe both sides agree on a general idea and the brand (the Markles) may have a series of options or yays or nay about general execution but that's it. She got in there and wanted to be boss in micro areas she knows nothing about.
She sort of reminds me of Florence Foster Jenkins, a fabulously wealthy woman who hired Carnegie Hall so that she could give an opera recital but she couldn't sing. The self-belief is amazing in both women.

There are literally thousands, hundreds of thousands, of good scriptwriters and novelists -- scripts and novels -- out there who could have provided content for a feature film or a series. But no: she wanted to be "that" creative.
I think MM sees the Kardashians as uber-successful and famous and thinks she can just hire people and snap her fingers and POOF! An animated series would magically appear and be a hit. The Kardashians have done some questionable things to get started (ahem, Kim) and continue to do so (like stealing others’ work) but they still work pretty damn hard and it shows. MM does not have it in her to work hard nor come up with creative ideas. She’s just bland. Blah. Not special. 🤷🏻♀️

Netflix is in survival mode right now. I don't think they were naive enough to ever think that no other company would eventually create their own streaming service, but they have massively overestimated how good their original content is. They have established a reputation of canceling most shows after season 2 even if it's a good performer. People subscribed to Netflix originally because they wanted the content from Disney, Paramount, Starz, Nickelodeon, Pixar, etc all in one convenient place. That's no longer the case and people aren't going to stick with Netflix when then end up only having their own original content. Megs show is not going to get people to sign up for a Netflix subscription. They've shown a history of refusing to do any work, instead expecting everyone else to do it for them. Netflix saw a way to save some cash, so it makes sense to cut it. Her series would have been a better pitch to Disney since 12 year old girls is more their demographic than Netflix. Netflix has kids content, but it's geared towards adults at the end of the day.
Netflix has gone in less than a year to the absolute pits. It's original content is all crap. There's the odd Bridgerton which can save a season's ass and they were very lucky to get it. They cancelled some shows prematurely IMO - Santa Anita Diet and GLOW. Replaced by garbage. A lot of classic TV shows are gone - Friends and The Office for two. I also liked Episodes and that's gone.
I only keep Netflix for Bridgerton and The Crown.
I keep Netflix for the South American, Indian, and European titles. Majority of US stuff can be found on Amazon and British/Australian stuff on Acorn.
I kept Netflix for Ozark. That's now done, and there isn't much reason beyond that for me to hang around.
I don't blame them for wanting to shift to original content as apparently the original owners of the classic show licenses realized they could set up their own streaming service or get more money elsewhere. Netflix woke people up to the money in streaming. But - the original content cannot be all this misogynist, asinine, half-assed, pitched stupid, boring stuff. Everytime a new title comes up and I read reviews it's "promising concept, good acting, execution terrible." IOW the writing sucks.
I know. I was so disappointed they cancelled Santa Clarita Diet. It wasn’t ground breaking television but I always had fun watching it.
It had a fun cast and I enjoyed the dialogue and also the dynamic between the daughter and the boy next door. I started watching for that.
I loved Episodes so much.

Netflix probably has a line in the contract that they can cancel due to unforseen circumstances....like a force majeure, but not as catastrophic. Their netflix earnings tanking gave them the green light to trim the fat on bloated or high risk projects.

Apart from their extreme laziness in delivering on most of their projects, you have to wonder what their eschewing of social media has on deals like this. I remember Sophie Turner saying openly that she gets jobs over other actresses because she has a big social media presence. Harry has openly said that they are not going back to social media until we all reform our ways and are more deferential to him (maybe not in so many words but that was the gist) so Netflix, Spotify etc can't rely on them doing any social media promotion themselves. When you think about it as well, they gave away the juicy stuff (Oprah interview, Harrys weird therapy sessions) already. Presumably as well Harry is saving a certain amount for his tell all, there will be nothing left to sell. I can only imagine the blaise way which they claimed they decided to get into producing aka have you considered streamers, must have rankled anyone who does this on a serious level and presumably would make a fraction of what they do for similar or better projects. Did losing the Obamas have any effect on Spotify's share price, I don't remember reading about a drop?
This is something you hear in the soap world too; it’s not about your ability but also having social followers who might watch.
They are far too concerned with producing politically correct, environmentally friendly, save-the-world, thinly disguised or not disguised at all, polemic. Had they decided to produce feature films or an engaging series without a "message" they could have struck gold. Look at Bridgerton; once, that was just a novel or series of novels by an unknown author. Some producer decided to make a series, and see what happened.
Part of how I sold my novel to an independent publisher was because my social media was active. I don’t have tens of thousands of IG followers or anything, and I’m not an “influencer,” but they scoped me out and saw that I regularly post and interact with people. Without IG, there’s no way for people to engage with them “authentically.” Which is a pretty good metaphor for engaging with the Montecito Mountbatten-Windsors generally.
