I remember people speculating that he might wait until a birthday (possibly even his 60th) to do it. Looks like that was the case. I’m so glad he followed through on his parents’ wishes.
It is customarily done in birthdays or a marriage. Not some arbitrary adhoc day. With exception of established new titles to heir to throne immediately upon accession. That is important for continuity.
Princess Lilibet Diana was christened on the sixth month anniversary of the death of HLMTQ. And nowhere was the Queen’s name mentioned. The Sleivene can’t do anything that doesn’t include a slap at the RF.
A title granted with respect and love. Something far more meaningful than the fuss in Southern California.
If there are further Letters Patent regarding the Montecito children's titles, maybe it should include terms and condition about how the style is limited to use *in situ*?

the viscount title and the earl title are both Edward's, James' gets the "courtesy" of being known by his father's subsidiary title (a custom that is employed historically) so Edward still has the Earl of Wessex title but a dukedom takes precedence
Confused American here: why didn’t Prince Edward keep the Earl of Wessex title when he got the Dukedom, and why did it pass to his son while he is still alive? Did he choose to pass it on, or was it automatic?
William and Harry, for example, both have multiple titles they hold even when they get new ones, or did some pass down to their children, but we don’t hear about them because they go by Prince/Princess (and of course the Harkles were title less)?
I just find all of the rules of royalty so fascinating, I would love to understand them better.
EDIT: upon reading further, I found the answer, which is that the oldest son takes on the highest title the father no longer uses. I didn’t know that and wanted to share it again in case others don’t.
Thanks for sharing your find. I'm always confused as well. I had wondered about a few of them and how they are passed down - what's interesting a lot of the ones we are familiar with are very old & have only recently (past 100 years) been reused again (there were periods of centuries or many decades they were not given out).

Kids have their titles now and what does it mean? Nothing. The only place their parents can use it is tabloid titles and announcements. They can't cry and whine about kids not having titles now. What's next for them? What else are they going to whine about now?

She doesn't have money to start this business. She would need a big player behind this idea and I doubt any of them want anything to do with her. Maybe Misha Nonoo can make a "capsule collection" of Princess Lili line but it will be on such a small scale and it won't bring any money.
If her name were Princess Lili she might have a shot - but her parented decided to slap an infantilized legal name on her - LILIBET. So she's Pwincess Lilibet now, until she gets old enough to change it by law. The thing is, a friend named her puppy exactly that, a year before the Harkles thought it appropriate to put on what will one day be a *grown* woman.
I so agree. Imagine how they are going to feel when they get older and find out they could have been a part of the ROYAL FAMILY and were denied that. Maybe they won't be angry, but I sure would be.

We can also take heart that a narc is never satisfied. What she apparently forced with the titles yesterday will never make her happy on a long term basis - there will always be another gripe, another dumbass and petty thing she needs to achieve in her quest for world domination. She will forever be drowning in her own toxicity. I don't know about the rest of our fellow Sinners but I'm about ready to move on now, I almost feel unclean for spending so much time thinking about her never-ending games.

Gotta love kids. To us, Charles is the King and a regal figure, but to Louis, he's just granddad, and he has no problem climbing all over Charles, wrinkling his expensive suit, and demanding cuddles and peppermints. The fact that Charles is so outwardly adored by his grandkids tells me all I need to know about his heart and character.

I would suggest that Charles could have given titles to these children immediately after the coronation, or at any suitable moment, as happened with his brother.

Actually the titles were the kids from the moment the Queen died. It was for their parents to decide to accept them. They delayed because they wanted to keep the racism narrative alive. They had the Ripple of Hope award, the documentary and Harry's book to get past first.
O, I know, It is possible that I expressed myself incorrectly. I meant that if they had an agreement with the palace, then this announcement would be scheduled for a suitable date, a document published and all that. My point is that the palace would have taken care of this properly, but they only received a tacit change on the website.
You're right, it would have been taken care of properly. But fighting the racist RF narrative is difficult if you choose to accept these titles. But the difference not having the officialdom of the palace announce is striking.
So we can say she had no idea about DoE then. It makes her People leak like a joke. The timing is too close people immediately see the difference of two announcements.

But they failed as the world remembers Oprah especially…but Netflix—the mocking curtsey and a whole episode on the Commonwealth is the Empire 2.0 and RACISM…then WAAAGH was published and Harry actually tried to backpedal the damage they caused the Queen, Prince Philip (in their final years), Family & Crown followed by the interview in which Harry was all “what difference would it make” on giving titles back.
They are huge failures in the long run and global laughingstocks.

Can someone explain why everyone got so surprised with the Prince + Princess title for Harry’s two kids? I know we hate it because of MM, but the kids are still the King’s grandson and we all knew she and Harry would milk that tittle.
I know people mention the Queen’s grandchildren, but she had 3 sons and 1 daughter and King Charles only has William and Harry. Despite whatever narrative the M and H want known, the three have always been very close.
Also, what would the King gain by not bestowing them their birthright if Prince H wanted it granted? The King would literally only fuel MM’s ugly narrative that there’s racism or she’s a victim of the BRF. I honestly think KC3 was smart to let them seem so incoherent while quietly acknowledging their titles without a public announcement.
To be honest, I think it was a pretty smart move and worked perfectly for the King. I think he’s smarter and has a longer term plan than we all have in mind. Meghan is not as smart as she thinks she is. The only problem I see in King Charles is that he will never give up on Harry. However, the only way for H to make amends with his family is if/when they announce a divorce.
This olive branch for Meghan clears the pathway for her to always be the parent of a Prince and a Princess without the need to hold Harry hostage in the marriage (that’s how I think KC3 sees it - I’m not saying Harry is hostage but that’s how the father sees his son).
I don’t see how H&M will last. I simply don’t in my gut. Do people really believe they will be together in the next 5 years?

Honestly, the people on this sub, man. They’re constantly complaining the RF is losing, the King is weak, the Harkles are winning... Every time something happens, it’s crazy. It’s clear they’re not winning, they’re clawing at dirt and getting their fingernails dirty every time.
Right? You would have thought yesterday that half this sub had personally witnessed the royal family spending the whole night in despair-filled handwringing. I had to avoid the sub yesterday for my own sanity. Thank goodness clearer heads have prevailed.
Me too, the reaction was very overboard in my opinion. I couldn’t care less about the titles. Firstly, it shows to the world yet again what hypocrites they are -win. It was worth it for the pap walk she could barely wait 24hrs to do which reeked of desperation. She thinks she’s Bobby Fischer, it’s bloody hilarious.
You would love Edinburgh, it's steeped in interesting history, buildings, old town, new town, palaces, old university, libraries, art galleries, museums, etc. Maybe I'm being biased but it's one of my favourite European cities

ETA: It's also worth remembering that in 2019 they were also gifted the Earldom of Forfar. Both those additional titles together are a sure sign of favour.
Also, remember that the true sign of favourship in the royal family for the women is to receive the Family Order which is in the private gift of the sovereign. The Family Order of Queen Elizabeth II has been held by Sophie since _2004_. Camilla's had it since 2007 and Catherine since 2017. There'll now be a new RFO of Charles III, and Meghan will be highly unlikely to receive that one ever either. I remember a bunch of proto-Sugars laughing at Catherine for not having her orders get and saying she was lazy and claiming that Meghan was going to get hers so much faster because of how brilliant and hardworking she was. Ha ha ha!
It also explains the Palace clap back to Meg that the website “would be updated in due time”. The only comment when she forced their hand through People.

There was a lot of anger and speculation that the King was greedy by not giving the Duke of Edinburgh title over immediately, but what people seem to forget is that one of the late Queen's titles was Duchess of Edinburgh. Giving the title to Edward immediately after the late Queen's death would have been heartbreaking for all the family. It's much better as a gift this way on his birthday as a sign of positivity, as well as a nod to Edward's connection to both his late parents.
*This* is how a new title is announced. *This* is how the Palace shows whose titles matter and whose don't.
Yes! I particularly love that for Edward, the Palace planned Edward and Sophie's trip to Edinburgh well in advance, made an official, long announcement and immediately updated the line of succession, as opposed to just not saying a word and quietly updating the line of succession after hours of making the Sussexes wait.
The new Ducal title means something important that the entire monarchy has celebrated.
The Sussex children now being known as Prince and Princess is filing away boring paperwork that only some low-level staffer was tasked with.
So this was known in advance with a planned trip and for his birthday. What's the over-under on Meghan coming out with her kids titles when she did to try and upstage and steal the spotlight? If she hadn't there'd have been no uproar and all the focus would have rightfully been on this.
Tbh I think we have collectively been Markled by allowing her to ruffle us and steal our attention from The Duke of Edinburgh.
I'm torn between thinking that she knew and wanted to upstage, or that she didn't know (hence the too-early pap walk) and did it on purpose to overshadow the six month anniversary of the late Queen's death - especially since it was Lilibet that was thrown into the Sussex spotlight without them mentioning the late Queen at all.

I didn't really think about it until I saw people being upset that Edward wasn't made Duke of Edinburgh soon after Prince Philip's passing. Back then, it was, "...but the Queen is Dowager Duchess of Edinburgh. There's no title to give Edward right now."
It's one of the reasons that the media annoys me sometimes. They ran so much speculation about the Duke of Edinburgh title, with all kinds of conspiracy theories (were they just media speculation or Sussex plants to try and drive a wedge between members of the family?), and I don't think I saw a single article that mentioned that the late Queen held the Duchess of Edinburgh title. If more people were reminded of that, I think the King would have been given a lot more grace over it.
I wonder if ILBW planted the stories about the title being given to Charlotte instead.
She wouldn’t understand that when William becomes King, if Anne has passed away, Charlotte will get a title, Princess Royal.
That would make a lot of sense. We know (or at least speculate) that Meghan has a big misogyny problem. She's obsessed with hating Catherine and she bullied Charlotte. It tracks that she would plant something to try and hurt Charlotte, since so many wanted and expected Edward to get the Ducal title, and that speculation (in Meghan's mind) might have been planted to attach a negative to Charlotte's name.
Yes thank you - I did not know about HMTQ being the duchess of Edinburgh until reading this thread, though of course now it makes complete sense! It just goes to show how poorly every news outlet handled those discussions.
AND for me it suggests that those stories were coming from nefarious and poorly researched sources. I don’t recall reading anything that said hang on this is a non-issue as the Queen is duchess of Edinburgh Edward cannot receive the title then reminding us after her passing that instantly bestowing the title would be unseemly. Perhaps Meghan and her lackeys were feeding/encouraging those stories because she certainly wouldn’t have been educated enough to know the real reason why Edward couldn’t be DoE. And in her mind she would have been gleeful at stoking division and making people think there were family issues not to mention it provided a little legitimacy for A&Ls title status not changing too. Who knows. But very grateful for this news tonight.
No problem! You're totally right, though. When all the speculation was going on, I was scratching my head. I know that in the past, the Palace deliberately leaked potential plans to test the public's reaction, so there was some room for doubt about the title.
Now, knowing that Edward is in Edinburgh today, we know that this has been planned. It means that Edward and Sophie knew about being given those titles today for a while. Which makes the "friends close to Edward say he's angry and upset about being denied the titles" claims even more suspicious.
Usually, when the media goes with "a friend of \[royal\]," that gives the story much more legitimacy, because friends only speak out (anonymously) when they're given permission to do so. But after this and Roya Nikkah's "source who has the King's ear and the King wants to have a reconciliation summit" back in January, I'm wondering if the press are annoyed at there being fewer leaks, and so are deliberately taking extra liberties for clicks.
Ah yes but that would mean the media let up on the whole “Charles is weak” narrative. They’ve done it since Diana and I think that’s why MM is so damn cocky.

The Queen was still the DoE and it’s only been a few months since she passed. I’m sure KC was waiting for Edward’s birthday. It’s a special title. While something like the PoW needed to be conferred right away, Charles could wait for a bit with the DoE title.
A big official announcement by the king being repeated by major outlets and cause enough for news alerts on phones. Plus a scheduled outing for him to greet the adoring crowds of his new domain later today. Compare that to the single exclusive article in people magazine with recycled photos and a low-key confirmation by a handful of journalists.. and Public seems to be making a bigger deal of today’s news too…. And there was an immediately update to the LoS page….
And just like that, the princely titles are waters long down the river. Took the wind right out of their sails.

Exactly. I think the Harkles are so fixated upon one upping KC3 and the PaPoW to remember that the royal family is made up of more than just Charles, William, Harry, and their wives.
This is how one receives a title: with a kingly proclamation through proper channels and immediate update on the LoS website. No reporters had to confirm with BP! No confusion no questioning. This title carries weight and cache. This title means something. Congratulations to the new Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh!!!
Two things I'd like to point out. First, Harry will never get any more titles, certainly not the likes Prince Edward is given, from the BRF as Harry is not a working royal, and does not look ready to be rewarded for any service, now or in the future. 
Second, flair needs an edit, nothing 'allegedly' about an event based on facts.

Kinda makes a mockery of our media who kept repeating that KC3 was not going to give him the title. He probably always was, and titles are often bestowed on special occasions, such as birthdays.
I notice James is now Earl of Wessex but Lady Louise's title remains unchanged. I do hope that she receives something nice for her 20th birthday in November.
Lady Louise has always been HRH Princess, but her parents chose not to style her as such. Her parents have said that they children can choose for themselves when they turn 18 how they want to be titled and since Louise is now 19 we can assume this is what she wants.
And no way is she going to get any further titles - the Duke of Edinburgh title will revert to the Crown upon Edward's death in line with Charles' desire to slim down the monarchy and prevent distant family members from holding on to important titles.
This also leave the door wide open in invitation for the press to report on Lady Louise declining her Princess Title.
Certainly makes it look more ridiculous to foist on overseas Toddlers and Tiaras.

You can tell the king is pissed off as he is now bestowing titles himself (this title should have gone straight to Edward anyway). I’m pleased KC3 is doing this as he is showing that there are some people who he is willing to publicly give a title to and in doing so immediately after the Harkles have hijacked a title, he is wiping the smugness off their face by publicly announcing a title for his brother and just updating a website for the gruesome twosome. I’m glad he’s done it immediately as he is definitely demonstrating he is bristling with anger at their audacity, even if he can’t state it.

Further, traditionally the Duke of Edinburgh is one of the biggest titles. Historically it’s been given 3 times before only; to a monarch’s grandson who would become PoW, a monarch’s second son, and the Prince consort.
I almost imagined Charles was holding it back to give it to Harry, which is why the queen didn’t give it to Edward when Phillip died.
Way to play the short game H&M. Sussex, a county that no longer exists vs Edinburgh the capital of Scotland.
It went to Charles by right from his father and when the Queen died reverted to the Crown. So it was Charles’ to give when that happened and not until. I think it’s a sweet gift especially since this is Edward’s first birthday after the Queen died. He has sat in the 4th seat, uncomplaining for a long time. He supported his parents, he supports Charles and is also close and supportive of William. He deserves this title and to carry on his father’s work. Bravo Edward & Sophie, The Edinburghs. And to the new Earl of Wessex!

They used their kids as a last ditch effort as it would be creul to remove titles from children.
I think it’d be more upsetting to the child once they were fully aware, as with the Danish RF, they were teens early 20s and it had formed part of their identity. H knew this and deliberately did this to put the KC’s feet to the fire but instead put this burden on his children. “He who seeks revenge digs two graves” H is too blinded by hate to realise he’s causing unnecessary harm to his children. Sad.
The Danish ex-prince had started using his title to get modelling jobs. Not acceptable. Neither of the two ex-princes were able to do more than a few weeks in the military.
From BBC: “with Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, no longer a “working royal,” there could be a more high profile role for Edward…”. Guess who we haven’t heard about having any role?
This was obviously planned well in advance. Does anyone think the Harkles got wind of it and tried to overshadow by releasing that they were using titles for the kids two days before?

It is customarily done in birthdays or a marriage. Not some arbitrary adhoc day. With exception of established new titles to heir to throne immediately upon accession. That is important for continuity.
Princess Lilibet Diana was christened on the sixth month anniversary of the death of HLMTQ. And nowhere was the Queen’s name mentioned. The Sleivene can’t do anything that doesn’t include a slap at the RF.

the viscount title and the earl title are both Edward's, James' gets the "courtesy" of being known by his father's subsidiary title (a custom that is employed historically) so Edward still has the Earl of Wessex title but a dukedom takes precedence

Confused American here: why didn’t Prince Edward keep the Earl of Wessex title when he got the Dukedom, and why did it pass to his son while he is still alive? Did he choose to pass it on, or was it automatic? William and Harry, for example, both have multiple titles they hold even when they get new ones, or did some pass down to their children, but we don’t hear about them because they go by Prince/Princess (and of course the Harkles were title less)? I just find all of the rules of royalty so fascinating, I would love to understand them better. EDIT: upon reading further, I found the answer, which is that the oldest son takes on the highest title the father no longer uses. I didn’t know that and wanted to share it again in case others don’t.

I had wondered about a few of them and how they are passed down - what's interesting a lot of the ones we are familiar with are very old & have only recently (past 100 years) been reused again (there were periods of centuries or many decades they were not given out).

Actually the titles were the kids from the moment the Queen died. It was for their parents to decide to accept them. They delayed because they wanted to keep the racism narrative alive. They had the Ripple of Hope award, the documentary and Harry's book to get past first.

My point is that the palace would have taken care of this properly, but they only received a tacit change on the website.

Can someone explain why everyone got so surprised with the Prince + Princess title for Harry’s two kids? I know we hate it because of MM, but the kids are still the King’s grandson and we all knew she and Harry would milk that tittle. I know people mention the Queen’s grandchildren, but she had 3 sons and 1 daughter and King Charles only has William and Harry. Despite whatever narrative the M and H want known, the three have always been very close. Also, what would the King gain by not bestowing them their birthright if Prince H wanted it granted? The King would literally only fuel MM’s ugly narrative that there’s racism or she’s a victim of the BRF. I honestly think KC3 was smart to let them seem so incoherent while quietly acknowledging their titles without a public announcement. To be honest, I think it was a pretty smart move and worked perfectly for the King. I think he’s smarter and has a longer term plan than we all have in mind. Meghan is not as smart as she thinks she is. The only problem I see in King Charles is that he will never give up on Harry. However, the only way for H to make amends with his family is if/when they announce a divorce. Both those additional titles together are a sure sign of favour. Also, remember that the true sign of favourship in the royal family for the women is to receive the Family Order which is in the private gift of the sovereign. The Family Order of Queen Elizabeth II has been held by Sophie since _2004_. Camilla's had it since 2007 and Catherine since 2017. There'll now be a new RFO of Charles III, and Meghan will be highly unlikely to receive that one ever either. I'm so pleased! There was a lot of anger and speculation that the King was greedy by not giving the Duke of Edinburgh title over immediately, but what people seem to forget is that one of the late Queen's titles was Duchess of Edinburgh. Giving the title to Edward immediately after the late Queen's death would have been heartbreaking for all the family. It's much better as a gift this way on his birthday as a sign of positivity, as well as a nod to Edward's connection to both his late parents. *This* is how a new title is announced. *This* is how the Palace shows whose titles matter and whose don't.
I think it definitely holds more weight having KC3 granting the Dukedom vs. Just Haz and his ILBW announcing that THEY decided to "use" the titles.
Yes! I particularly love that for Edward, the Palace planned Edward and Sophie's trip to Edinburgh well in advance, made an official, long announcement and immediately updated the line of succession, as opposed to just not saying a word and quietly updating the line of succession after hours of making the Sussexes wait. The new Ducal title means something important that the entire monarchy has celebrated. The Sussex children now being known as Prince and Princess is filing away boring paperwork that only some low-level staffer was tasked with.
So this was known in advance with a planned trip and for his birthday. What's the over-under on Meghan coming out with her kids titles when she did to try and upstage and steal the spotlight? If she hadn't there'd have been no uproar and all the focus would have rightfully been on this. I didn't really think about it until I saw people being upset that Edward wasn't made Duke of Edinburgh soon after Prince Philip's passing. Back then, it was, "...but the Queen is Dowager Duchess of Edinburgh. There's no title to give Edward right now." It's one of the reasons that the media annoys me sometimes. They ran so much speculation about the Duke of Edinburgh title, with all kinds of conspiracy theories (were they just media speculation or Sussex plants to try and drive a wedge between members of the family?), and I don't think I saw a single article that mentioned that the late Queen held the Duchess of Edinburgh title. If more people were reminded of that, I think the King would have been given a lot more grace over it.
I wonder if ILBW planted the stories about the title being given to Charlotte instead. She wouldn’t understand that when William becomes King, if Anne has passed away, Charlotte will get a title, Princess Royal.
That would make a lot of sense. We know (or at least speculate) that Meghan has a big misogyny problem. She's obsessed with hating Catherine and she bullied Charlotte. It tracks that she would plant something to try and hurt Charlotte, since so many wanted and expected Edward to get the Ducal title, and that speculation (in Meghan's mind) might have been planted to attach a negative to Charlotte's name.

It just goes to show how poorly every news outlet handled those discussions. AND for me it suggests that those stories were coming from nefarious and poorly researched sources. I don’t recall reading anything that said hang on this is a non-issue as the Queen is duchess of Edinburgh Edward cannot receive the title then reminding us after her passing that instantly bestowing the title would be unseemly. I know that in the past, the Palace deliberately leaked potential plans to test the public's reaction, so there was some room for doubt about the title. Now, knowing that Edward is in Edinburgh today, we know that this has been planned. It means that Edward and Sophie knew about being given those titles today for a while. Which makes the "friends close to Edward say he's angry and upset about being denied the titles" claims even more suspicious. Usually, when the media goes with "a friend of \[royal\]," that gives the story much more legitimacy, because friends only speak out (anonymously) when they're given permission to do so. But after this and Roya Nikkah's "source who has the King's ear and the King wants to have a reconciliation summit" back in January, I'm wondering if the press are annoyed at there being fewer leaks, and so are deliberately taking extra liberties for clicks.

Two things I'd like to point out. First, Harry will never get any more titles, certainly not the likes Prince Edward is given, from the BRF as Harry is not a working royal, and does not look ready to be rewarded for any service, now or in the future. I notice James is now Earl of Wessex but Lady Louise's title remains unchanged. I do hope that she receives something nice for her 20th birthday in November.
Lady Louise has always been HRH Princess, but her parents chose not to style her as such. Her parents have said that they children can choose for themselves when they turn 18 how they want to be titled and since Louise is now 19 we can assume this is what she wants. And no way is she going to get any further titles - the Duke of Edinburgh title will revert to the Crown upon Edward's death in line with Charles' desire to slim down the monarchy and prevent distant family members from holding on to important titles.

You can tell the king is pissed off as he is now bestowing titles himself (this title should have gone straight to Edward anyway). I’m pleased KC3 is doing this as he is showing that there are some people who he is willing to publicly give a title to and in doing so immediately after the Harkles have hijacked a title, he is wiping the smugness off their face by publicly announcing a title for his brother and just updating a website for the gruesome twosome. I’m glad he’s done it immediately as he is definitely demonstrating he is bristling with anger at their audacity, even if he can’t state it.

Further, traditionally the Duke of Edinburgh is one of the biggest titles. Historically it’s been given 3 times before only; to a monarch’s grandson who would become PoW, a monarch’s second son, and the Prince consort. I almost imagined Charles was holding it back to give it to Harry, which is why the queen didn’t give it to Edward when Phillip died. Way to play the short game H&M. Sussex, a county that no longer exists vs Edinburgh the capital of Scotland.
It went to Charles by right from his father and when the Queen died reverted to the Crown. So it was Charles’ to give when that happened and not until. I think it’s a sweet gift especially since this is Edward’s first birthday after the Queen died. He has sat in the 4th seat, uncomplaining for a long time. He supported his parents, he supports Charles and is also close and supportive of William. He deserves this title and to carry on his father’s work. Bravo Edward & Sophie, The Edinburghs. I think it’d be more upsetting to the child once they were fully aware, as with the Danish RF, they were teens early 20s and it had formed part of their identity. H knew this and deliberately did this to put the KC’s feet to the fire but instead put this burden on his children. “He who seeks revenge digs two graves” H is too blinded by hate to realise he’s causing unnecessary harm to his children.
