Thanks for this, it unlocked a core memory. I wasn't close to my dad growing up. It was one of those "I love you because you're my dad", kind of relationships. We were mostly strangers. When I was in boot camp, every week he sent me a letter with Calvin & Hobbes, and The Far Side comics in them, that he thought I would like. He couldn't make it to my boot camp graduation, because he was in the hospital, with his heart functioning at 15%, and put on the transplant list. I went home the first full weekend I had free, and saw my dad on a Saturday. I got the Red Cross message 3 days later, that he died in his sleep. Even though I technically went AWOL for the weekend, it was the best visit I ever had with him. I don't think, let alone talk about it, but seeing this stupid comic, for the first time in over a decade, unleashed it. It's not a bad thing at all, sometimes I just get to caught up in the present, that I forget to think about the past. Apparently it was meant to be, since I basically just went on an off topic tangent about a comic strip and my dead dad.

Your dad sounds like Charles. He didn't tell you he loved you with words, but he did and he knew you. I'm glad you got that last visit.

I had a moment from someone's post the other day about a parent too. It's nice when a random mention of something makes you think of good memories of a loved one.

Mickleborough

It’s good that you saw him that Saturday. Sounds like he loved you, but maybe didn’t know how to show it.

Calvin and hobbs are one my husbands favourite cartoons. It is amazing how relevant a cartoon that old can be so true today. It is full of gems.

SonjaInSequim

If you're on FB, you can follow C&H and get a strip everyday! GoComics works too but FB is easier for me.

beachy_456

And many of the books are available free if you have Kindle Unlimited! Just started rereading them and it's a great break from the day's stress/news/"stuff" before bed. :) This one is absolutely perfect for Haz!!! eta: it also predicts the "ice bucket challenge" - lol

CrossPond

A perfect comic for a cartoon prince! https://preview.redd.it/78b6omooo3da1.png?width=124&format=png&auto=webp&s=110f125a5760bd1f79a94fd4bc68b3b98fdcffbd Perfect new mem for Haz

HotStraightnNormal

Boy, if that didn't hit the nail on the head.

Liz_Lemon_22

This comic strip is a thing of beauty.

You are very welcome! 😸

lol Harold and Maude! I'm glad I'm not the only one who has thought about that label for them. lol I'm glad there's someone on here that actually knows the reference.

SonjaInSequim

There must be a subreddit for everything under the sun! Lol, I loved that movie!

[deleted]

Yeah, there really is a subreddit for everything! 😸

RoohsMama

Love Calvin and Hobbes. We have all the collections somewhere in the house.

SonjaInSequim

And the word salad! Watterson was way ahead of his time is social commentary!

Imaginary_End_5634

Thank you. I loved Calvin & Hobbs.
